    FMOD was free for indies before too, the only real difference now is that you can make unlimited games at any time while before you could only make 1 commercial game in 1 (or 2?) years

    As one of the FMOD GDNative maintainer, I'd like to says that yes, we are still supporting Fmod plugin with utopia-rise team.
    We have plans to make this plugin better like making ready to use fmod nodes.
    For now we have a lot of work on kotlin support for godot, so we paused our objectives on FMOD.
    Anyway we will provide new releases along with engine updates, and enhance this plugin once we have less work with Kotlin integration.
    Even if we have paused development of new features while working on kotlin, we will make fixes if issues are found.
    Also feel free to contribute ! :)

    I have checked out fmod a few times and still don't see a compelling reason to use it. It appears to me that fmod is practical if the shop actually has a 'sound department' where there are people who are in charge of sound and nothing else - it makes it so their workspace is entirely in fmod and the sound assets are accessed purely through the game engine's fmod interface.
    Not much of a reason there to use it unless you're the 'dedicated sound guy'.

    • @gamefromscratch
      @gamefromscratch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This isn't really a DAW. It's more for composing and mixing game ready sounds. It's DAW like in it's composition and mixing functionality, but you would generally for example compose your soundtrack into a DAW, then import it into FMOD (plus your dialog, sound effects, etc) and FMOD would handle things like environmentally positioning the soundtrack, or mixing it with other sounds, or setting up dynamic game driven triggers, etc.

    is getting 100/200k$+ a year becoming common now for games or something? I keep seeing a lot of engines doing stuff like this, but I always hear about how most quality indie games struggle to even make near $50k

    • @faduci
      @faduci 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The USD 200K limit for FMOD/Unity etc. sounds a lot, and in fact very few indie developers will earn this much, but the USD 200K limit isn't for earnings, it is total revenue, which includes any money going through the company, including salaries, rent etc. So a small game studio with five employee will easily exceed the USD 200K limit, even if they never earn anything from their game. And the revenue is per company/organisation, not per game/project. So if e.g. a non-profit food bank that distributes donated food worth USD 250K each year with the help of volunteers only wants to create a small promotion game in Unity to raise more donations, they aren't allowed to use the Unity Free or Plus licence, instead they are required to get a Unity Pro license for USD 1800/year. The fact that the food is donated and not really related to the game doesn't matter, revenue is all value that passes through the company.

      From what I understand no, it integrates with your game engine so your game triggers an ingame event for example and your FMOD setup deals with playing the correct sounds for it and mixing them together appropriately. I don't know if that is helpful if you work on a "small" solo game, then again Celeste uses it too.

      Hey Chronoss, you didn't really get what FMOD is there for. Yes, Davinci Resolves Fairlight is indeed an audio engine - you can use it as a DAW even - but while you can edit media/tracks (and write music in Davinci), there really is no integration with Unreal Engine / Unity, etc.
      FMOD does exactly that. It basically understands how to communicate with a game engine in a way that lets you bind the media you work with to triggers within the game engine. That allows you to bind sounds to events and triggers within a game and be used in real-time / interactively.
      The example you have uploaded is a render with attached music. So you see, while Davinci is surely great and powerful, it is definitely limited in these regards, as it is (unlike FMOD) not designed for that kind of job.
