There is an explanation of why the flat nose penetrated that steel plate better than the pointed nose bullet. The flat nose produces what engineers refer to as a "punching shear" on impact with the plate, where as the pointed nose crushes on impact absorbing some of the force before it can be transferred to the steel plate. In the ballistic material, the flat nose will penetrate straight line, also because of punching shear. When driving pipe piles we use a flat bottom to take advantage of this effect, allowing the pile to drive deeper with less energy and the flat bottom piles do not curve as much. And yes, some dumb ass in a gun store stopped me when I was buying 30-30 ammo, asking why I was hunting with such weak ammo.....I just looked at him, shook my head, and kept walking.

Tony Rome, that’s what I was thinking, but I didn’t know how to word it, thank you for the explanation I really appreciate it, from what I’ve seen the good old 30-30 drops more deer dead in its tracks then bigger more powerful guns like 308, 270.

@@Leverguns50 not sure about that. Being 308 & 30-30 can use the same exact bullets. I get the flat nose theory & i can agree. Most deer i shoot do drop with the 308 too. Not a lot of difference in the 2, just one has the potential to be faster bc it holds more powder & a little more pressure. But IMO mostly shot placement could be the difference in any round dropping large game & running a short distance, if you making good shots they not going far if any at all! I've been doing some thinking & testing with soft point flat nose & poly pointed expanding 150gr for .308. But so far looking like the blunt soft points may have the advantage. The shockwave you get (that you see in gel) i think has a lot to do with ammo type & making that deer go lights out!
Good video bud I enjoyed it!👍

I agree with what you’re saying, my brother Hunts with a 308 but he said the pointed Bullet to use just don’t drop them like when he hunted with a 30-30, i’ve also hunted with people that hunted with the 7MM and other guns and their deer we had to track sometimes, however I’ve never used appointed Bullet other than the FTX on a deer yet, so I personally don’t have experience with the difference on deer. I think you’re on the right track, I take that back I have shot a some deer with you 300 Winchester short magnum and those were pointed bullets, I remember at least two of the deer dropped in their tracks one of them flopped around a little bit, The big 10 point got away I later found its bones, it was a longshot though, probably not long for a 300 mag but long for me

The problem is nobody hunts anymore. 300 yard shots are now the order of the day. Hunting has become target shooting with live animals. These "New" super bullets that are pointed really don't make a difference out in the woods. The spire point nonsense started with gun writers. There have always been rifles that could shoot pointed bullets. I have a 99 Savage and my buddy has a 340 Savage. The problem is nobody made a pointed bullet that would expand at 30-30 velocities. The ultimate folly was "Putting one pointed bullet in the chamber". If you have to reinvent a cartridge, buy a different gun.

Ever notice how the newer cartridges like 350 Legend and 300 Blackout are compared to the 30-30? The 30-30 is a standard for a reason.

    • @Leverguns50

Yes I sure have noticed that, used to everyone called it under powered, but now with all these weak AR cartridges they can’t say that anymore because they’re hunting with 300 blackout such, it’s funny how they change their tune. But the 30-30 is still the same old awesome cartridge

@@Leverguns50 it really is quite the round. I don't hunt with mine, but I got a 336 from my grandfather years ago and its lots of fun to shoot. It took a while to get it set the way I want with the factory sights. I got some funny looks at the range adjusting the sights with a hammer and punch. Now that they're on pretty well, I'm thinking of adding a 1-4x20 or 2-7x32 style scope.

2 year old video but this is fascinating that the 30-30 went through the armor plate. Here is what I find particularly interesting, in the middle ages there was a huge variety of arrow/bolt heads some used for flesh or cloth, some for piecing armor. The medieval armor piercing arrow heads tend to be very stout and stubby, I always found that odd, I figured very sharp pointed arrows would be more effective, then I watched testing done on period correct plate armor and chainmail. It turns out that very pointed arrow heads tend to break or bend the tips diverting its path, either deflecting the arrow or breaking the shaft. While the stout even flat headed tips bit into the metal more effectively transferring the energy of the projectile into the target causing penetration. I think we are seeing a really similar thing happen here. I would wager the higher velocity pointed bullets yaw on impact and disintegrate, but the flat nose 30-30 digs right into the plate much more efficiently transferring energy.

Remember the Lee Marvin/Charles Bronson movie "Death Hunt"? The "Mad Trapper" Bronson fictionally portrayed was a real guy who was tracked by the Mounties and posse and he was deadly with his Savage 1899 .30-30. Also, in the Mojave Desert hunt for "Willie Boy" in 1909 everyone in the posse carried a Winchester 1894 as did Willie boy. He was also a deadly marksman with his stolen .30-30. And Frank Hamer used a 94 .30-30 early on as a Ranger, also a .25 Remington Model 8 and a Savage 1899, probably I think in .30-30. Except for pointy bullets, who could tell if they were shot with a .30-30 or an AK47.

It’s about a 77 model, I got that barrel from gun parts associates and put it on there probably 20+ years ago, probably got about 50 deer with that gun
