I saw the video length and thought "wait, he's gonna watch both videos isn't he" and I'm so glad I was right 😁 Fun fact out of the way, that digital arpeggio in the first chorus has the same sound as my house phone, so when listening to it for the first time i thought someone was calling and ran over there to get it, lol. About the song though; It took me until May to really "get it" and a few months after that to admit to myself that it was my winner for this year. It was still my 3rd with the studio cut alone; especially because of that wonderful bridge which was really the thing that initially made me love it, and I'm very glad you enjoy it as much as I do. I feel like the studio doesn't do his voice justice. The actual song and instrumentation is incredibly polished, but with a voice like his it is so much better to hear him belt out those notes without any sort of editing over them. It really adds to how genuine it feels. Maybe something weird to note about the authenticity, but Diodato isn't smiling, or doing hearts with his hands, or dancing around or whatever while he's singing, and in a contest like this where everything has to be not just presented but performed, it's frankly refreshing. Like you said, it's romantic without being cheesy. It's like he's there to get his message across through voice and voice only, and he very much manages. The lyrics are something I can very much relate to, and someone the whole world and Italy in particular could relate to during spring of 2020. It's really with the whole pandemic and lockdown that they took on an even deeper meaning than the one I'd carved out for myself beforehand. It's honestly weird because I don't "feel" like the instrumental is really special? I'm not musically trained and can't tell chords or specific ways of playing instruments, so from my surface level understanding it should just be a piano ballad with a few other orchestra instruments, and as someone who typically enjoys instrumentals that are a bit more out there it's surprising I'd love it so much. What I think happens is that his voice mixes with the instrumental, rather than having the two be distinct parts working together. And since his voice is so impeccable in this, it lifts everything up. It feels very much genuine and heartfelt (something unfortunately far too uncommon in ESC songs), and the way the song is built makes sure that feeling is suddenly thrust into you the second that first chorus hits, and stays in there until the song ends on those calming notes. It's very hard hitting and I couldn't stay either unaware or oblivious to it if I tried. Because of the message behind it Because of that performance on the night of that esc substitute show Because Diodato won't be participating next year, making this entry irreplacable Because I guess it was the highest voted 2020 song on the ESC250 poll lol And just because it's a damn good song by a damn good singer I think I'm always going to consider Fai Rumore as the winner of 2020 that never was.
The live performance in the empty arena and connected to the current situation simply took the song to a way higher level compared to the studio version.
Definitely one of the best songs of 2020! I freakin love this song! The voice, the lyrics, the power, the composition, etc! Everything in here is what makes Italy my favorite country in Eurovision!!
I absolutely love this song! The instruments, the emotion in his voice, it's beautiful! The live performance as well, amazing! A lot of people seem to not enjoy it that much, but for me it's probably one of the more beautiful ballads in recent ESC history. A winner in my books. :)
When I made the comment, there were a few who said they didn't like the song that much, I've also seen people rank it low in their Top Lists so yeah :)
Wow, making Italy the special one. Unbelievable. Especially coming from a Swedish guy. Just wow! Can't believe someone is as biased towards Italy as I am. Now I want to be your friend. Haha. Jokes aside, Italy deserve the special attention. The entry that they have put out from Sanremo to Eurovision has been phenomenal and different from year-to-year. They don't conform to the mould of what a Eurovision song should be, and that is why I appreciate Italy in the contest more than some particular countries. This year is no different IMO. Some would say that this is not even close to what Soldi has to offer but I beg to differ. I think this could have a chance of winning, even against Iceland just because this can be such a powerful and emotional song especially during this pandemic, which basically can garner a few more votes, in addition to the jury votes (Sanremo jury is usually a good indication of how the song performs amongst the Eurovision just as well). I don't think the staging would be drastically different from his Verona performance but he does not need any elaborate staging anyway. But, sadly, we're not going to know that. His vocal performance is definitely the one to focus here just because of the fact that he showed some vulnerability while at the same time he showed passion as well to really capture the message he's trying to convey. This song was my favourite last year. Anyway, great review as always!
I think my Italy bias has been made a little obvious throughout the years hahah, but they usually seem to just hit home with me! I think you summed up why Italy is so special really nicely, they stick to themselves! They focus on Sanremo and don't seek to appeal to the rest of the world, which makes them more authentic. I'm quite jealous for that since I feel my own country has kind of tried to sell in everyone on the idea of making the whole national selections within countries super commercialised in order to appeal to the general mass of people. Sadly, I doubt this would have won, however. Due to the fact I mentioned above, I've noticed the juries seem to have a hard time turning Italy into major contenders (2011 excluded). They seem to garner a lot of general appeal from the public vote, but the juries seem to have a fixed mindset on sticking to the commercialised music industry, which is a big loss for a country like Italy in terms of this contest! Thanks for sharing! :)
@@groot1421 That's a long reply. Appreciate it, mate! And yeah, the jury has been underappreciating Italian entries for years now (2018 was probably the worst one that comes to mind).
I’m so happy you finally listened to it, loved your reaction to both videos. It kinda became an anthem for the Italians when the Covid situation got quite bad there, there are videos of people singing it in their balconies and it was really beautiful to see that. That Verona live performance you watched always makes me cry, the empty arena and the lyrics of the song makes it so powerful and moving. Everything about this entry just leaves me speechless.
Fellow Adesso-fan! Seeing the 15 minute length-time of this reaction makes me excited. Such an incredible song. I'm happy to let you describe everything that's right about it. The live performance was even better than the studio version. It was easily my SanRemo winner and it was a top three song in my ranking this year. Out of the favourites, this would've been the best winner for me.
this is... hands down... the best reaction I've ever seen on youtube you clearly have a musical ear, which in the end is what matters most of all to truly understand music congratulations from a musician ;)
During Sanremo I had different favs, and I still think Rancore's song was the best, and my favorites in top 3 were PTN, but Diodato sells it so well and I can't not love it. Besides, with the new meaning the song got during the lockdown, I feel it was meant to win. It came to be so important and monumental that it feels like nothing short of predestination, in a way. I'm not a spiritual person at all, but I feel like it truly hits that spot. All in all my winner this year
I usually think that picking a favourite song in Sanremo is like picking your favourite child There's always something special in several songs and I think it's one of the most beautiful shows out there
So beautiful. So emotional. Truly the best song of the year. I was also going to recommend his live performance at the Arena di Verona. I'm sure we'll see Diodato at Sanremo again someday, and hopefully at Eurovision one of these years.
His vocal performance is one of the most special in eurovision of the past few years. The song isn't anything particularly amazing in my opinion but his vocals are just phenomenal. It also was the highest ranked 2020 song in esc 250 which suggests it would've won esc.
Unlike you, I really do feel like the song is special. It's a no-nonsense ballad, consistantly straight to the point and the most complete of arrangements, there really isn't anything I could see anyone change with it. I'm always sceptical to Italy being hyped up to win because it never happens. I believe it when I see it haha
Greetings from Las Vegas Nevada. I watched the first semi final of Eurovision 2022, was not impressed by any of the entries. As they were counting votes or on a break, they introduced Diodato with Fai romore. I was blown away with the song, the performer, the crowd joining in and the presentation as it was with the dancers. I speak no Italian whatsoever, but the emotion in the singing gave me chills. For me, a foreign language in a song is like another musical instrument, and Italian, being such a beautiful language only made it sound even better. I rarely comment on you tube videos, but I was searching for a review that kind of confirm it for me that I am not crazy or alone and found yours. I don't know your name and who you are, but you were able to break down the song in a way I would never be able to. You seem to get emotional like me as it was playing and I just want to thank you for your review of this beautiful song.
Min vän, you are seeing my second place in this year! It's emotional, in every aspect: the vocal delivery, the instrumentation, the production. This song makes me weep like a baby, and the live presentation just made this more special to me. Italy doesn't have a bad song, for me. They always deliver quality and their own twist on this contest! Kisses, dear Groot!
This is probably my favourite entry of this year, it’s just so beautiful and emotional and I adore his voice. I also agree with you that the Italian entries are pretty much always phenomenal, especially 2018. Now I have to go listen to his other song you mentioned:)
With such high praise, I take it that you really enjoyed the selection if you had 7 songs you enjoyed more! I'll be hoping Italy to keep going in the same direction!
@@groot1421 yeah above that are more enjoyable for me. Most of which I don't think you really fancy hehe, they're Ukraine, Lithuania, Croatia, Israel, Azerbaijan, Cyprus & Albania. But the diversity in taste makes us unique in the end. Anyway, keep up the amazing reviews! Can't wait for your 2021 reviews once this one's done 😊
I loved your reaction, it's quite beautiful and emotional isn't it? 🖤 You normally don't comment much about the lyrics, but for me the message of a song also plays a big role in how I connect with it. Italians have such a beautiful way of saying things! And the lyrics of this song are worth paying attention to, so beautiful and poetic... And this feels very honest indeed (not cheesy at all). But this song is not my favourite entry this year, and I can't wait to see you listening and reacting to that one.
So now you understand why I consider Italy's song as the best of 2020. It's hard for me to add to what's already been said because Snowcold described it so perfectly in his/her comment. Where I differ from him/her is that "Fai rumore" became my number 1 song after the first listen (but I heard the live version from San Remo before I heard the studio track). I get what he/she means when he/she says he/she doesn't feel like the instrumental is special in itself, because piano ballads with added strings, drums and bass is nothing new in terms of arrangement, but what makes the song special is how everything work together (melodies, chord progression, vocals, the production, etc.). I'm glad you noticed the small nuances in the instrumental like that digital sound effect in the first chorus that subtly travels through the back of your headphones. I'm a sucker for when a chord goes from major to minor by just flattening the third. It's such a simple movement because it's just a single note change, but that one note change makes such a huge emotional impact when employed in the exact right spot, and that's exactly what Diodato did by going from B major to B minor just 3 chords into the song. Another huge reason why "Fai rumore" has such an emotional impact (aside from chord choices and his beautiful vocals) is how dynamics are employed. Like you said, when the verse transitions into the chorus, it "explodes". And don't get me started on the instrumental bridge - pure eargasm! Lyrically, it's based on his ended relationship with his ex-girfriend Levante (whom btw also competed in San Remo with her own song). I think many people can relate to the topic of how uncomfortable the "silence" between you and your ex can sometimes when you meet each other post-breakup. But with the corona pandemic hitting Europe, and especially Italy pretty hard, the meaning of the song ("make noise") transcended into something greater when people had to go into isolation and social distance mode. You've already read the comments mentioning how Italians sang this song on their balconies during lockdown. Even though Italy is a fan favorite of 2020, I still feel the song itself is underrated just because of the fact that it's a ballad. I don't remember it getting much attention prior to San Remo. I have seen a few comments calling it "boring". Those people have heard the song, but they clearly have not listened to it (if you know what I mean). I'll end with this: While it sucks that we never got to see Diodato sing "Fai rumore" live on the Eurovision stage, the one good thing about ESC 2020 being cancelled is that the song remains untouched. It may have been for the best knowing that the song is 3 minutes and 36 seconds long, which meant a significant portion of the song had to be cut out, risking of losing much of its emotional impact (the wonderful instrumental bridge would most likely be the "sacrificial lamb" in this case). Instead we got the song performed in its entirity live in an empty Arena di Verona which is arguably the perfect way to experience the song in the context of what happened in 2020.
P.S. While "Fai rumore" is the best by far, San Remo 2020 had other great songs, like this one: "Ringo Starr" by Pinguini Tattici Nucleari (which came 3rd) th-cam.com/video/RE104GqPhfc/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much for sharing this... seems like we're on the same page on everything in this one hahah! It's quite touching to see how a song with such an intimate message can expand into something that unites an entire country like that. While I do agree with you to an extent on the whole "they have not listened to it" part, I can understand why it's not for everyone. People's subjective tastes will always be different and we will appreciate different things in the music we hear. It's one thing to open up to a song but not every song will connect with every listener, that's just how it works. I'm just happy to see there are so many who have found a love in this one! I do also agree with you on the final point... there's some beauty in that whole concept that the song will eternally be the way it's intended and the performance at Arena di Verona will be the memory that will continue to live throughout the years... it's quite touching really considering what the song is all about. Again thank you for sharing all of this! It was a beautiful read!
Love the instrumental commentary! I always wondered that digital sound was because it makes me think an alarm is going off. I think I listened to this song a 1-2 times last year and saw that live performance which I thought was very beautiful but I thought nothing of it beyond that. It didn't really hit me until this year I saw his guest performance in 2021's Sanremo. Not sure what changed but I'm appreciating it now.
I just love how you literally do these videos to comment on the song and all that yet during the first listen you spent so much time just silent... admiring it. Big mood, my dude haha. Anyway, he was not my winner for Sanremo but I love the song and it definitely manages to get me in my feels. The abruptness of the end feels so perfect and telling to me, as he's singing about the noise the memory of a lost loved one makes and I feel he then uses the abrupt silence to signify how outside of him it's silent. As in, we're listening to his internal turmoil the whole time but then the ending is as if we changed camera/scene, we get life as seen from the outside, it feels like he's trying to say "no one can hear the beautiful noise your memory creates in my brain but i still hear it after all this time". i don't know, that's just what i feel. i love the song too much tbh.
Oh, that's a beautiful take on the ending... thank you for sharing that, I just got chilld from reading it and connecting it to how it came together... Ahhh, thank you! I now have yet another reason to obsess over this song!
This one was a fan favorite, and people are saying it could have won, but they are forgetting that the song would have to have gone through a revamp in order to shorten it (the contest was cancelled before they got to do it) and - let's face it - Italy does not have a good track record with shortening songs (I think we all still have PTSD from Ociddentali's Karma). They probably would have had to sacrifice the instrumental part here, which is one, if not the best part of the song (it's really cathartic and acts like a buffer to all the intensity of Diodato's voice; without that, the song would be really busy, I feel). Also, the live performance at the Arena di Verona is magnificent, but the one performance that completely made me get into the song (I really didn't see the appeal of it before it) was the acoustic performance at the online Eurovision Spanish pre-party. I'm not sure what it was, but the song just hit me there. (Link: th-cam.com/video/nXU2UbItkeU/w-d-xo.html)
Yes, this could have happened....when in 2018 they shortened Non mi avete fatto niente, the song lost something. Intrusion into such a complete and finished piece of music can do harm.
Yeah I'm not really sure what part could've been cut out here, but I actually think they pulled off the revamp really well with "Non mi avete fatto niente". It didn't lose its magic, only made the experience shorter and maybe feel slightly incomplete for those familiar with the original version. With that said, I trust Italy in these things! I will take a look at that acoustic performance! :)
While it absolutely lost something, I do feel like they pulled that shortening off really well! It didn't really take out any of the hard-hitting parts from the song and they were quite creative in how to re-arrange the chorus extension after the second chorus. Still I agree with you, it's a harmful thing being forced to short original pieces of music down like that.
@@groot1421 Yes, you are right....shortening of experience....when every moment of the song is precious, even slight reductions are perceivedas a crime)) But I am sure for not-so-involved listeners these changes could even pass unnoticed.
First time seeing these versions of this song after watching the SF1 performance. These were just a epic, especially the instrumental part. It was definitely something else to see this on stage. Good shout by Rai and EBU to include it, though it should've been a final interval act, not a semi final... I know it would be a rewatch, but it would be good to your take on the live performance at ESC22.
it's the second time I listen and watch your reaction, Thank You, really Thank you, you were so accurate and it's not because is my country, but cuz I love this song, I'm in love with this song, Fai Rumore gives me goosebumps all over the time and makes me fall in love of Love.. your reactions gave me goosebumps together the song, Thank you again♥
At this point I really believe Italy would've won it all easily! I liked the song from the begining, but only after the cancellation of Eurovision and all the horrible things that happend to Italy in spring, I started listening to this song from another perspective (not thinking about the competition and all the other entries, but just enjoying the song) and it just breaks me every single time! It is so emotional, so beautiful! Plus, this performance in empty arena... Perfection!
Thank you so much for the very special review, you made my day! :D I remember listening to Fai Rumore the first time during Sanremo and by the time Diodato got to the chorus I was already in love with the song, thinking that I would't mind if that would have ended being the winner :)) As an Italian, I think I immediately loved it because of the lyrics' meaning. I would like to point that out because I feel like since Covid-19 hit, people only seem to take into account the meaning this song gained ""thanks to"" the pandemic, someway underestimating the more obvious message of the song, which I find beautiful and meaningful nonetheless. Simplistically put, one needs to fight against silence because it tends to exaggerate distance between people who have drifted apart (for whatever reason, but I think in this case the reference to a breakup is quite clear). So in this sense "to make noise", to make the other feel one's presence even if it might be painful (for both). This is my interpretation, at least :) By the way, I noticed one little mistake in the translated lyrics on screen in the official ESC videoclip. In the chorus it's "BECAUSE I cannot bear this unnatural silence"; not AND/THAT. It's almost insignificant, I know, but I really wanted to save that shade of meaning from getting lost in translation :) Apart from lyrics, I can't really explain why I absolutely adore this song. I'm not a music expert, I know nothing about the technique behind it (by the way, thank you very much for your always interesting and someway instructive analysis), but I can say the chorus constantly gets to hit something inside me in a way that I cannot keep myself from singing along (or more likely screaming 😆) everytime I hear it. Like you and many others said, it must be something magical that comes from the combination of Diodato's powerful vocals and the song instrumentation, which are SO perfect together it feels like listening to an instant classic. All in all, I believe any other singer couldn't perform this and manage to keep it as much striking as it is with Diodato's vocals. I only regret that this won't get to have the spotlight I think it would have deserved on the Eurovision stage... P.S. About the "instant classic feeling" I was speaking before: I enjoy every Fai Rumore version (studio/live from the arena/acoustic) but for some reason I tend to go back to listening to the first live orchestra version in Sanremo over and over again. And that's not perfect at all: there's a distinct wrong note played by the bass at end of the last chorus; also, the drum opening the first chorus was played more softly, producing a less clear and distinctive sound comparing to the following performances, where it was fixed and made it much more sharp and rolling... Nevertheless, I find this version someway superior to the others. It might well be because it was the very first version I've heard, or maybe it is because of the orchestral arrangement, I don't know... but maybe you'll do :) Unlike RAI, I firmly believe that beauty needs to be shared, so I leave the link to my Sanremo's favourites folder here: drive.google.com/folderview?id=148x8xMPARYRXZf0JBNsxIfx_KtiN9F0q There are only songs I personally loved the most from the past two years (including first night version of Fai Rumore), but I hope you'll enjoy them anyway :) P.P.S. If you haven't done yet, I would recommend you also listen to "Che vita meravigliosa" which I think is another GREAT song by Diodato (to name at least one, but really his entire last album is filled with gems in my opinion). Oh, and make sure to have a look at the lyrics translation: I find they always are one of the best part of each of his songs. That's REALLY all! Sorry for the never-ending comment and my extremely rusty English. :)
Wow... thank you for this beautiful comment!! I will start from the bottom and mention that I actually listened to his full album and it was soooo enjoyable! I saved so many of the songs hahah Thank you so much for sharing the Sanremo folder! Truly, I appreciate this so much because I adore Sanremo and I'm always sad when they take down the performances! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Really seems like we agree on the main parts of what makes the song so beautiful and it's really nice to hear it from your perspective! It's always interesting to hear how a song can come across from a listener from the specific country because they might have a completely different meaning to those who stand closer to it. I really feel like that's the case here so I am really grateful over you deciding to share all this with me. I'm happy I made your day because you made mine with your lovely comment! Grazie! :)
@@groot1421 Really glad to know you appreciated Diodato music and my precious little Sanremo folder hahah It was just a pleasure for me sharing it :) By the way, freaking RAI takes down Sanremo performances after one week (or so) since releasing... Just so you know ;)
@@lightblueC92 You have no idea how pleasantly surprised I was to find the performance of my personal 2019 favourite "L'amore è una dittatura" in your folder!!!! That's a double thank you!!!!
I absolutely love it. It just feels how you mentioned so true like every word just comes straight out of his heart and I cant deny that i'm a bit into romantic songs. I also am/was quite happy as I personally did not enjoy italians entry of 2019. The Song also feels somewhat typical italian for me atleast. Oh and thanks for all your reactions by the way, I greatly enjoy them :)
Glad you like it. This song, for me, perfectly reflects the angst that we all feel at times, and especially this last year. Likely not to have won ESC, but easily my No 1.💎
Italy serves quality year after year. Non mi avete fatto niente is favourite Eurovision Song of all time and I follow Sanremo every year. Diodato is my second place this year after Switzerland (I bet you are gonna love that song). These two songs I think would be the basic contenders for the win.
You're one of the most affordable and on point commentators. I just have to say one thing. Let's be honest: cutting it to three minutes could have been the usual disaster. Fortunately the lack of contest at least make the song not being ruined. In short: the 3-minutes format doesn't suit Italian songs (that tent to be a little bit too complex and downtempo to save so much room, imagine Fai Rumore without that airy bridge!!), it does affect all the songs in the contest. ESC format is more visual-oriented like everything on the contest, Italy's style can't really compete, and indeed, Italy just join the party and no really cares to send winning songs, but only bring the winning pearl of Sanremo. In the end, Fai Rumore's interval act in Turin 2022 gave us all the magnificence in its potential, which would have been impossible trough the competition. And that performance is absolutely e p i c. To win or not becomes definitely pointless (even without the blessed live orchestra).
Thank you kindly! Although I agree with you, I still really would've wanted to see "Fai rumore" at least get the exposure that the Eurovision final provides... regardless if a shorter version had been shown there. There's just something about the song that makes me want everyone to hear it hahah
While I usually try to not follow National selections, Sanremo (And A Dal :( please come back Hungary) is one of those festivals that I usually semi-follow every year, and I was a bit disappointed that this song won (I prefered Eden from Rancore). Even so, this happened last year as well lol I prefered Argentovivo to Soldi and Soldi ended up being my number #2, so Fai Rumore is up high on my top this year as well. I think it has to do more with Diodato than the song itself, the way he sings is very captivating. I don't know if it is up to your sleeve, but he (and Mahmood as well) sang on Notte della Taranta of 2020 (a song called Beddha ci dormi) with a live orchertra and it transports you to another place with his voice.
I haven't followed Sanremo in 2019 and 2020 but I always make sure to listen to all the songs after I've made my review and I can't wait to do so with the 2020 ones... it's just such a beautiful show! And yes A Dal was great too! And don't forget Vidbir hahah!
Im actually not really a fan of what Italy usually sends, but this one i really like. I feel like the chorus is hitting right to my heart. Definitely one of my faves of last year.
Meanwhile I'm really on the opposite there, I usually love their songs, not to mention so many of the songs participating in Sanremo that doesn't reach Eurovision, but I'm so happy to hear you enjoying this one! :)
I almost *always* love Italy, the only exceptions really being 2011, 2014 & 2017. This is my second favorite Italian entry since their return and that should give everyone at least the slightest idea of how much I love it. The only one I prefer is actually my all-time fav, Grande Amore, and this is pretty close tbh. I'm *really* sad he didn't perform this song in Rotterdam, I haven't doubts his performance would be AMAZING.
Yeah this was just great, I think along with Bulgaria and Switzerland are my favourites from the "serious" category (I split my faves into 2 categories, serious and fun, the second category has Russia and Lithuania on top :D ), unfortunately it was very overlooked from the fandom due to the whole NOT A BOP OMG BORING notion, it made me really sad, such a quality entry, so dramatic and his vocals are just amazing. Last years' San Remo had some really great entries, this, Andromeda, Ringo Star, damn Italians have so much quality consistently, my favourite ESC country also, it was criminal that they weren't participating for so many years.
I think you're onto something there... ballads usually have a harder time building hype (unless they're named Arcade) and I've seen some call this a ballad-heavy year which obviously makes it even harder. Remember, Amar Pelos Dois was considered a certain non-qualifier in the ballad-heavy 2017 before the rehearsals started!
When I first heard the song I just thought it was another bland ballad with a good singer. I didn’t hate it, I just got bored listening to it. When I later read the lyrics and understood the meaning of the song I was like: ”Okay, maybe the song isn’t too bad after all” and when they released the performance from Arena di Verona I started to really like the song. The performance in the empty arena made the song much more effective, in my opinion. I can’t say that I have been listening to the song too much (the only two songs from ESC 2020 I have been listening to lately is Tears getting sober and the first version of The best in me), but I do actually think that I will start listening to this song again since I really enjoyed listening to it in this video. It’s very well composed and Diodato sings the song in a very emotional way.
I'm happy to hear you're gonna listen to it more, I think it's one of those songs that you really have to connect with before you enjoy it completely! Not to mention, this style of music can be rather divisive... I just think it ticks every box with what it wants to do and with Diodato being as great as he is, I just think it's a matter of letting oneself get dragged into the song and performance
He's not exactly reinventing the wheel with this song and the chorus can get a little repetitive. With that being said, i absolutely love this one. I especially appreciate the lyrics. Even though the story isn't anything new and groundbreaking, the writer/s have put enough effort into the text to give it some character and to make it feel personal. ESC is not exactly known for songs with deep and meaningful lyrics so Fai Rumore definitely stands out for me. It has a lot more substance than the average Eurovision entry.
Reinventing the wheel? No Fulfilling all expectations of the wheel and blowing them out of the water? Yes I was too busy listening to the music (as always) that I couldn't focus enough on the lyrics which is a shame because they too tie in to the beauty of all of this!
As a fan of Antonio, I couldn’t agree more with all the positive that has been said on this reaction and comments. Just listen to another of his songs which appeared in Sanremo giovani in 1914. Different genre, much more rock this one, but the lyrics are equally so dense in meaning and the text is so well constructed… Another pearl! Enjoy: th-cam.com/video/3I8gAt01Ygg/w-d-xo.html
I should adore this, but I cannot connect with it. My issues are the screachy chorus and the bland tune. The emotion sounds forced to me. I guess I am more of a Marco Mengoni guy.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) Sanremo never stops, so he won't come back. Honestly, I've looked at this year contestants and I don't know... we'll see at the first night.. I need to get prepared: watching Sanremo is become a f* marathon 😅😂
Sanremo never fails to find so many good ones anyway... if I'm not mistaken it means much more for Italians to win Sanremo than to participate in Eurovision anyway :)
@@groot1421 oh yes absolutely. Sanremo is A THING in Italy: everybody watches it. The vast majority of the population doesn't even know that Eurovision exists. The artists themselves participate for the value and reputation of Sanremo, not to win the ticket for Esc (that is just consequential): of course now youger contestants pay attention also to the possibility of going to esc, but it is not the main goal. This is proven also by the fact that often songs are longer than 3 minutes, live orchestra friendly and strictly in Italian (and need to be modified later). Also, don't know if you know this, but Sanremo is more ancient: Esc was created based on Sanremo.
Definitely in my top ten. Check out the video th-cam.com/video/mFieIjTSH2U/w-d-xo.html Italians seemed to take it to their hearts to buoy them up in hard times.
@@ibexfunlab3767 Hehe, yeah. Unfortunately there's been a while since a woman won San Remo.. 🙄 I'm not into cancel culture at all but it kind of stands out that males tend to do better.
I know that I'll most likely be hunt down with pitchforks for saying this, but I wasn't really a fan of this. I actually think this is Italy's weakest song since 2011. With that said, Italy is one hell of a strong country so of course the standards are very high. At first, I hated this. I don't anymore. I could actually say I like it, but I want more from Italy. This just was too "normal". At least to someone with no specific knowledge in music, I just like listening. And I unfortunately, mostly heard a good - but very ordinary - ballad. But yeah, at least it grew. In march, I had this on place 39/41. Now I would place it 25/41 so I absolutly misjudged it from the start. But yes, I just want something more from Italy. But now, I can see highlights in this that I couldn't before :) So to sum it up: Though I wished for more from Italy, there are moments I can't deny :)
I first heard it as a live version during san remo and I felt like I wanted it to win....because in comparison with other songs it was most flawless. Hard to explain, on one hand it is just a ballad, as you say, but the way Diodato plays his voice like a musical instrument makes it much more than just a ballad.
That's REALLY low at first there! Personally, I can't really see any reason behind having it so low considering some of the songs I've heard so far haha However, I do understand that this song is not everyone's cup of tea, absolutely! It's a distinct style which some will love and somme will not. I'm happy to see you found some more enjoyment in it later on! I can also relate to that feeling of always having super high expectations on Italy hahah :)
@@groot1421 It’s quite easy for me. I personally almost prefer something I find really bad, in front of something that doesn’t give me ANYTHING. And at first, Italy was one of those songs that ended up not giving me anything at all. So it sat comfortably in the bottom. But now, I can get a little touched by it :) But just a little. I’m nowhere near being blown away :) But it’s still a massive improvement.
In my opinion, this was a massive downgrade from Soldi... I'm sorry, but this song is very boring and nothing new. I suppose it could be based upon Soldi being such a massive favourite of mine that this came out as being rather underwhelming, but I don't know... :/
I think Italy sent the best song two years in a row. "Soldi" was not my personal favorite, but still I thought is it should have won because it was the best song (composition, music, and lyrics) of ESC 2019. "Fai Rumore" is my personal favorite, and, imo, the best of 2020, very likely to have won. I think its a strength of Italy that they can send powerful contenders year after year that are high in quality and still so different from each other.
Oh, I'm completely opposite! Soldi was not really my thing and I just feel something special with these more classical ballads. I get your point with it not being very special or something new, but I just think it follows the formula of perfected, classical ballads and executes every part of it to perfection! Each to their own though! :)
I saw the video length and thought "wait, he's gonna watch both videos isn't he" and I'm so glad I was right 😁
Fun fact out of the way, that digital arpeggio in the first chorus has the same sound as my house phone, so when listening to it for the first time i thought someone was calling and ran over there to get it, lol.
About the song though;
It took me until May to really "get it" and a few months after that to admit to myself that it was my winner for this year.
Because of the message behind it
Because of that performance on the night of that esc substitute show
Because Diodato won't be participating next year, making this entry irreplacable
Because I guess it was the highest voted 2020 song on the ESC250 poll lol
And just because it's a damn good song by a damn good singer
I think I'm always going to consider Fai Rumore as the winner of 2020 that never was.
That was beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
The live performance in the empty arena and connected to the current situation simply took the song to a way higher level compared to the studio version.
I agree... it definitely gave it something special
I love this song - his performance in Verona is stunning.
In the first lockdown in Italy - there were films of people singing this song from their balconies. It is just so emotional.

I absolutely love this song! The instruments, the emotion in his voice, it's beautiful! The live performance as well, amazing!
A lot of people seem to not enjoy it that much, but for me it's probably one of the more beautiful ballads in recent ESC history. A winner in my books. :)
Looking at the comments I've seen so far, a lot of people seem to agree with us :)
When I made the comment, there were a few who said they didn't like the song that much, I've also seen people rank it low in their Top Lists so yeah :)
3:28 Your reaction to the instrumental was priceless, and accurate too!
Sometimes it just hits you!

For me it was between Switzerland and Italy last year. They are both such beautiful sensitive songs.

Such an incredible song. I'm happy to let you describe everything that's right about it. The live performance was even better than the studio version. So great you managed to download this! 🥳 Diodato’s voice is perfect in live performance, very hard not to be impressed the way he delivers his song.
RAI gave me a big scare haha! Agree with what you said 100%
During Sanremo I had different favs, and I still think Rancore's song was the best, and my favorites in top 3 were PTN, but Diodato sells it so well and I can't not love it.
Besides, with the new meaning the song got during the lockdown, I feel it was meant to win. It came to be so important and monumental that it feels like nothing short of predestination, in a way. I'm not a spiritual person at all, but I feel like it truly hits that spot. All in all my winner this year
I usually think that picking a favourite song in Sanremo is like picking your favourite child

This is the song that I'm sad for not being able to compete.
At least we got a beautiful live performance from the Arena.
Do you write that the text is not special? But do you have any idea what it says? And who is it for?

I loved both Israel and Croatia!
You're absolutely right... I tend to not pay much mind to lyrics, but they tie in so beautifully with this song!
The second best part of finally having heard this song is that I can now listen to all the other Sanremo songs too! :)
I love this performance! It's perfect

At this point I really believe Italy would've won it all easily! Thank you so much for the very special review, you made my day! :D
I remember listening to Fai Rumore the first time during Sanremo and by the time Diodato got to the chorus I was already in love with the song, thinking that I would't mind if that would have ended being the winner :))
As an Italian, I think I immediately loved it because of the lyrics' meaning.
This is my interpretation, at least :)
By the way, I noticed one little mistake in the translated lyrics on screen in the official ESC videoclip. In the chorus it's "BECAUSE I cannot bear this unnatural silence"; not AND/THAT. It's almost insignificant, I know, but I really wanted to save that shade of meaning from getting lost in translation :)
Apart from lyrics, I can't really explain why I absolutely adore this song.
It might well be because it was the very first version I've heard, or maybe it is because of the orchestral arrangement, I don't know... but maybe you'll do :)
Unlike RAI, I firmly believe that beauty needs to be shared, so I leave the link to my Sanremo's favourites folder here:

By the way, freaking RAI takes down Sanremo performances after one week (or so) since releasing... Just so you know ;)
Thank you so much for sharing the videos! So happy you did!!
@@ibexfunlab3767 like I said, it's a pleasure! :)
Thank you! :)
Glad you like it. This song, for me, perfectly reflects the angst that we all feel at times, and especially this last year. Likely not to have won ESC, but easily my No 1.💎
So far, my number 1 as well haha :)
14mins? omg! and two videos for the one and only Italy!!
I couldn't resist making this a long one hahaha
Italy serves quality year after year. Non mi avete fatto niente is favourite Eurovision Song of all time and I follow Sanremo every year. Diodato is my second place this year after Switzerland (I bet you are gonna love that song). These two songs I think would be the basic contenders for the win.
Couldn't agree more! Looking forward to the Swiss one, people seem to hype it up a lot hahah
this is stunning. very Radiohead in the best way
It does have those vibes right haha
Still hurts that this song didn't compete and didn't win Eurovision.
My favorite of all time.
Yesss, their Notte della Taranta performances were great! Makes me wish it was on spotify so I could listen to it on repeat.
This was/is my winner of the Eurovision 2020 entries.
So far, mine as well
Im actually not really a fan of what Italy usually sends, but this one i really like.
You won't expect any less from Italy 🇮🇹 :-) There is also another performance in Sanremo with the live orchestra! I love that too
Thx for your review
I almost *always* love Italy, the only exceptions really being 2011, 2014 & 2017. This is my second favorite Italian entry since their return and that should give everyone at least the slightest idea of how much I love it. The only one I prefer is actually my all-time fav, Grande Amore, and this is pretty close tbh.
I'm *really* sad he didn't perform this song in Rotterdam, I haven't doubts his performance would be AMAZING.
We can certainly see how great his live performance would've been judging from that performance in Verona haha
Best song💙🇮🇹🥰
Beautiful and sad. It reminds me of that very bad outbreak of the virus and the hard lockdown we were in
When I first heard the song I just thought it was another bland ballad with a good singer.
No
Fulfilling all expectations of the wheel and blowing them out of the water? Yes
I was too busy listening to the music (as always) that I couldn't focus enough on the lyrics which is a shame because they too tie in to the beauty of all of this!
We all know it should've been Rome 2021 if there was no virus
I was certain you'd say Tbilisi 2021
@@groot1421 sure but only if they had a good song
@@9EscFan5 I thought they couldn't make a bad one in your book
As a fan of Antonio, I couldn’t agree more with all the positive that has been said on this reaction and comments.
Just listen to another of his songs which appeared in Sanremo giovani in 1914.
Different genre, much more rock this one, but the lyrics are equally so dense in meaning and the text is so well constructed… Another pearl!
Enjoy: th-cam.com/video/3I8gAt01Ygg/w-d-xo.html
I think this would have won
He's not coming back.
Big shame... maybe some time in the future :)
@@groot1421 Yup, he's an amazing artist.
I should adore this, but I cannot connect with it. My issues are the screachy chorus and the bland tune. The emotion sounds forced to me. I guess I am more of a Marco Mengoni guy.
Italy would win 2020.
That would've been nice
@@karinseregni221 I did actually know that! I nerded myself into Sanremo a bit back in 2018 when I loved the show so much hahah :)
@@groot1421 this year there will be more contestants than usual! Hope that it will be as iconic as 2020 (we still talk about it) 😂😂
Definitely in my top ten. Check out the video th-cam.com/video/mFieIjTSH2U/w-d-xo.html Italians seemed to take it to their hearts to buoy them up in hard times.
Oh, this is so beautiful to see!
Thank you for sharing this!
I love his voice but the song is not as great as Levante's song or even as Elodie's (his competitors on San Remo)
Levante really had a wonderful song, very strong. Maybe she wins this year)
@@ibexfunlab3767 She'll be participating? That's great, thanks!
@@claraafonso250 oh, actually I don’t know, but I think with her potential she just should))
@@ibexfunlab3767 Hehe, yeah. Unfortunately there's been a while since a woman won San Remo.. 🙄 I'm not into cancel culture at all but it kind of stands out that males tend to do better.
@@claraafonso250 honestly, i prefer listening male musicians, but she impressed me. Pity, her live performance is no more available.
For me, if Elodie or Levante won, Italy would then be a contender.
That's REALLY low at first there! Personally, I can't really see any reason behind having it so low considering some of the songs I've heard so far haha
However, I do understand that this song is not everyone's cup of tea, absolutely! It's a distinct style which some will love and somme will not. I'm happy to see you found some more enjoyment in it later on! I can also relate to that feeling of always having super high expectations on Italy hahah :)
I can't deny that the performance really put something special in this
@@groot1421 It’s quite easy for me.
@@mio.vision, I don't want to spoil it to Groot, so I'll just say that in my opinion the "other" emotional balld would do better than this one. 😜😊
@@claraafonso250, If you're speaking of the song I think you are (not in English?) , that one is my very close second favorite song of the year.
@@mio.vision yep, not in English 😉
Oh, I'm completely opposite! Soldi was not really my thing and I just feel something special with these more classical ballads. I get your point with it not being very special or something new, but I just think it follows the formula of perfected, classical ballads and executes every part of it to perfection!
Each to their own though! :)
