Ok I was born in Woonsocket in 1971, grew up there and Joe is spot on except it isn't a Fisherman's village. It's a crazy city with an ominous, surreal feel to it. Lots of drugs, some hookers, crime, drug dealers, drunks, sociopaths, some psychopaths, thieves, corruption at city hall & the police dept, people are diverse in this once French Canadian textile mill city of 46,000 plus - whites, blacks, Asians, spanish ( mostly from PR ). It's a poor city, lots of welfare & SSI, most girls get pregnant before 18 and have 2, 3, 4 kids by 2, 3 baby Daddy. If you drove down the street and randomly asked men you saw "Have you ever been to ACI ?" ( the State Prison in Cranston RI ) it's fair to say 50% would say yes. Lots of businesses close and move out mostly due to high taxes. There's I think 6 housing projects, not including 3 high rise buildings for mostly elderly & disabled. I love the place tho, crazy as it sounds. It will always be my hometown. People born there are coined "Woonsocket Rockets", me being one and I'm proud of it TBH. There are some good restaurants there. "New York Lunch" is an iconic place on Main St & NY style wieners they serve are fantastic. There's really good pizza shops too. It's definitey a unique city for sure.
Poor Woonsocket.. theres lots of good people in Woonsocket - but yep, the youth... full of ESLs and Ghetto culture glorifying youths. Wasn't always this way. Woonsocket is another victim of the impoverishment of the country. It makes me sad to see this city so messed up, when it used to be vibrant and a good place to raise a family, with small businesses everywhere, and big factories for blue-collar workers. When the last of the Canucks die off here, its going to be like Mad Max.
