Second reasons why I think 40k community is self aware enough, mostly every fandom has its political ones: Fandom loves your wholesome memes and most popular stories tend to be the ones that explore humanity and the good people in smeg system aspects and Horus Heresy where we see the last rays of hope for actually good imperium and humanity. And if you want to act the villain then it's better to vent bad thoughts in fiction instead of reality.

I looked at what the video was and as soon as i saw the thumbnail i was appaled but holy crap him saying those things about Titus is like he didnt even play the game. I bet he didnt did he?
Sometimes you play a game, look for flaws with it and because you are looking for flaws, you instinctively miss the things that would contradict your opinion. Maybe he played the game but thought the amount of bad things the imperium did in it was too low. Maybe he missed significant ones. Maybe he didn't realise, that space marines aren't all brainwashed murder drones... You can miss a lot, when you are busy shooting bugs.
I understand the dislike about the meme part but that's the only thing about that video that I actually think makes sense. Too often we see the 'It was just a joke' answer given to mask stuff that's genuinely hateful, to the point it becomes more and more hard to separate genuinely hateful from joking. It's a slippery slope that's all to easy to fall on.

It is a series of deliberate intellectual manipulations intended to warp other people's world-view. It's not that SM2 is going to make people fascists; it's that fascists will use it to illustrate the greatness of fascism and draw young people who don't know any better into their ideology; Adam's video is meant more as a warning or inoculation against that by a Hungarian forced to watch his own country succumb to those fanatical ideal. TL;DR: Adam something's video is more a commentary on propaganda and dog-whistles than a critique of the game or setting. That 40K is a fascinating fictional exploration of societal evil, but not everyone wants it to stay a fiction.

Its not a true schrodinger's cat situation as context does give clues. Someone posting that meme directed at a pro-chaos/xenos meme or topic then while annoying its unlikely to be that deep. If someone posted the meme directed at something which is pro-LGBT+ or anti-bigoted, then you can assume they have more malicious intents.

I honestly found that video to be weird, because usually, Adam something mainly focuses city planning and bashing libertarians. So to see him make a video about warhammer in general felt out of left field.
I think there's a point that can be made about aesthetics. I think that a reason that the satire and the showing of the imperium as an evil state is lost is in the current practical tacticool aesthetic of the model range, and to a lesser extent SOME of the modern warhammer art. A primaris intercessor does NOT look like a hateful, intolerant member of a decaying institution that cares more about glorifying the past and genetic 'purity' than it cares about the individuals that make up the imperium. The only 'grimdark' or 'evil' details on the intercessor is the skull on the imperialis and maybe a small skull on his modern, practical tacticool bolt rifle. The worst part is that every tacticus primaris space marine with the exception of like some veteran units or characters wear the exact same modern sci fi armour with not a single gothic detail
To add on to the point you made about space marines being complex, that's my main point about all space marines all having the same armour. The scale refresh that was primaris was such an amazing opportunity to tap into their individuality with mixing and matching of armour reflecting how in lore each suit of space marine armour is a relic that has been modified and added to by techpriests and other marines over it's long history. I mean, primaris literally introduced modular shin armour to the well-posed intercessors and they did nothing with it other than having the same guy over and over

Just a small note for 3:18 While not exactly them deliberately sparing him, it's stated in the 3rd edition necron codex that the entirety of the Hive Fleet Leviathan super-organism manouvered around the Outsider C'tan - (one of the only if not the only unsharded C'tan left in the galaxy) - even though this is definitely oldcrons lore now, I still think its a pretty cool tidbit.
I have been playing rogue trader, and it really shows you how complex the setting can be, you can choose what to be, either a zealot and a monster, an iron fist of oppressiveness and exemplar of the brutality of the imperium, or try to do your best to help everyone you can and show the spirit of humanity can persist and live on even in the dire circumstances that you can find yourselves in this dark horrid corner of the galaxy. Also, there is heretic, but i haven't played it yet.
For context, I've been playing and reading 40k since 1994. At this point, I've been following the setting for over 30 years. I'm also queer, have been active in my local gaming community and seen both how good and how not-so-good a gaming community can be to the people in it. And, although from a lore perspective, everything you've said here is correct, that's not the point that Adam was getting at. The point he was making is that presenting 40k 'straight-faced' has issues because a lot of the themes that 40k parodies are ones that the far right wants to promote. It's part of the reason why 40k has had for a long time, an issue with incels, racists and other deeply unpleasant folks trying to get a foothold in the community. He's not saying 40k players are bad, or that you're bad for liking Space Marine 2 (he even comments how he likes the game at one point in the vid), but rather is highlighting how presenting an idealised version of the Imperium (and I'm taking his and your words for it on Space Marine 2, I haven't played it yet) could accidentally put the wrong idea across, and that's liable to see the wrong people (people who do use memes as dogwhistles to find out who is 'just playing the game' and who is 'their kind of people' , if you catch my drift). It's shit. I'm pretty sure 99.9% of the people here just want to read some books, play some games and have some fun. I know I do. But the sad fact is, if we ignore that 00.01% of toxic shithead who have an ulterior purpose, then gaming spaces can become really not fun for anyone who doesn't fit into their mould of 'the right person to be here'. I've seen it happen with women, trans people and queer people in general (Not so much with racism thank goodness, but I would not be surprised if it happens). But given how the world is, particularly after recent events in the US, it's something we have to, as a community, watch out for. And it's not helped when a AAA game dodges the ugly without thinking critically about what avoiding those horrible bits might do down the road.

I mostly agree with you and have criticised Adams video too, but I have to make a small correction. He didn't claim that ALL people like the imperium because of the horrible way it acts, but that fascists do. And he wants GW to show even more overtly and on the nose, that that fact is meant as satire and that very progressive stuff (or at least values we see as normal today) is present in the imperium and accepted as normal, even among its horrible doctrine. I know where he is coming from, but he worded it very aggressive towards the fanbase and pretty arrogantly. Also I think his ideas are cooked up to haphazardly and without enough substance behind them. More like a quick brainstorm and less a fully fledged out critique and ideas for improvement. Your overall video was fine, I don't mind the quirky style or little voicecracks and stutters. Find your way to comfortably voice your opinion and stay respectful and you will be good.
The problem lies, like everything, with fringe groups. Look no further than the Horus galaxy subreddit, they really believe in the meme they post, like far right believers. What do you say apply to the vast majority of people in the hobby, what I think he (Adam) said in this video regards those fringe group. His vid covering 40k seems very much along the line of "Popular thing is trending, make video to engage with algorithm" since none of his other videos in the past year cover games or science fiction. He pretty much admits in the video he just wants to "own the chuds who never played Warhammer", while he himself doesn't know what slaanesh is on the guardsman comic he shows. He said "there's no women on Warhammer and how the chuds don't want it", while completely not mentioning sororitas. He is purely on bad faith. But his point was that the written works and the table top elements of 40k are inherently anti fascist because they do not glorify the evil of fascism. The video games cut out all the evil the Imperium does by making it seem heroic and attractive. He also discussed that modern fascists have begun to unironically use Imperium art and phrases in their gross diatribes online.

No he's mutch better off for it and he's now in a position were he can spread that same mentality on to others. In 40k following orders and not questioning your superiors gets you places. Oh yes, the classic argument of “I’m not one of the bad guys therefore, none of us can be bad guys!”. Just because Adam isn’t specifically talking about you your local play community or officially endorse products doesn’t mean that there isn’t an issue. Because it is an issue it’s an issue that pops up fairly regularly. Adam is much more talking about the people at the fringes and the dangers of falling for their garage, and genuinely glorifying the ideals, the setting instead of engaging with it as a silly bit of satire and silly little toys that we like to paint and play with. The closest parallel I can think of is the Goth scene and it’s continued public statement to be against all forms of hate while simultaneously embracing people in groups known to exhibit absolutely abhorrent morals, and protect them from criticism. Most of that protection comes from arguing no not us because I could never be. In terms of logical fallacy for your argument I would call it something between a bandwagon fallacy or an appeal to tradition.

But the Human Spirit is Inherently Not," and (paraphrasing) "Liking a faction doesn't make you a shit person, being a shit person makes you a shit person." 40k is like any other fandom where assholes be assholes, and these assholes will try to co-opt their own ideals etc; it isn't unique to 40k. Besides, 40k is meant to be an escape from the real world and being the bad guy (or a good man in a bad world) is fun! Fight fascism in real life, but in 40k play whoever the fuck you want. Second reasons why I think 40k community is self aware enough, mostly every fandom has its political ones: Fandom loves your wholesome memes and most popular stories tend to be the ones that explore humanity and the good people in smeg system aspects and Horus Heresy where we see the last rays of hope for actually good imperium and humanity. And if you want to act the villain then it's better to vent bad thoughts in fiction instead of reality.

Sometimes you play a game, look for flaws with it and because you are looking for flaws, you instinctively miss the things that would contradict your opinion.

Too often we see the 'It was just a joke' answer given to mask stuff that's genuinely hateful, to the point it becomes more and more hard to separate genuinely hateful from joking.

It is a series of deliberate intellectual manipulations intended to warp other people's world-view. It's not that SM2 is going to make people fascists; it's that fascists will use it to illustrate the greatness of fascism and draw young people who don't know any better into their ideology; Adam's video is meant more as a warning or inoculation against that by a Hungarian forced to watch his own country succumb to those fanatical ideal.
TL;DR: Adam something's video is more a commentary on propaganda and dog-whistles than a critique of the game or setting. That 40K is a fascinating fictional exploration of societal evil, but not everyone wants it to stay a fiction.
I do agree with this as well. It's just that with how Adam framed it, its black and white and if you post a "HERETIC" meme you are automatically a fascist. Its not a true schrodinger's cat situation as context does give clues. Someone posting that meme directed at a pro-chaos/xenos meme or topic then while annoying its unlikely to be that deep. If someone posted the meme directed at something which is pro-LGBT+ or anti-bigoted, then you can assume they have more malicious intents.

I think there's a point that can be made about aesthetics. I think that a reason that the satire and the showing of the imperium as an evil state is lost is in the current practical tacticool aesthetic of the model range, and to a lesser extent SOME of the modern warhammer art.
A primaris intercessor does NOT look like a hateful, intolerant member of a decaying institution that cares more about glorifying the past and genetic 'purity' than it cares about the individuals that make up the imperium. The only 'grimdark' or 'evil' details on the intercessor is the skull on the imperialis and maybe a small skull on his modern, practical tacticool bolt rifle. The worst part is that every tacticus primaris space marine with the exception of like some veteran units or characters wear the exact same modern sci fi armour with not a single gothic detail
This is why older space marine armours were better. Mark 3 looked clunky and battle damaged
To add on to the point you made about space marines being complex, that's my main point about all space marines all having the same armour. The scale refresh that was primaris was such an amazing opportunity to tap into their individuality with mixing and matching of armour reflecting how in lore each suit of space marine armour is a relic that has been modified and added to by techpriests and other marines over it's long history. I mean, primaris literally introduced modular shin armour to the well-posed intercessors and they did nothing with it other than having the same guy over and over

While not exactly them deliberately sparing him, it's stated in the 3rd edition necron codex that the entirety of the Hive Fleet Leviathan super-organism manouvered around the Outsider C'tan - (one of the only if not the only unsharded C'tan left in the galaxy) - even though this is definitely oldcrons lore now, I still think its a pretty cool tidbit.
I have been playing rogue trader, and it really shows you how complex the setting can be, you can choose what to be, either a zealot and a monster, an iron fist of oppressiveness and exemplar of the brutality of the imperium, or try to do your best to help everyone you can and show the spirit of humanity can persist and live on even in the dire circumstances that you can find yourselves in this dark horrid corner of the galaxy. Also, there is heretic, but i haven't played it yet.

For context, I've been playing and reading 40k since 1994. At this point, I've been following the setting for over 30 years. I'm also queer, have been active in my local gaming community and seen both how good and how not-so-good a gaming community can be to the people in it.
And, although from a lore perspective, everything you've said here is correct, that's not the point that Adam was getting at. The point he was making is that presenting 40k 'straight-faced' has issues because a lot of the themes that 40k parodies are ones that the far right wants to promote. It's part of the reason why 40k has had for a long time, an issue with incels, racists and other deeply unpleasant folks trying to get a foothold in the community.
He's not saying 40k players are bad, or that you're bad for liking Space Marine 2 (he even comments how he likes the game at one point in the vid), but rather is highlighting how presenting an idealised version of the Imperium (and I'm taking his and your words for it on Space Marine 2, I haven't played it yet) could accidentally put the wrong idea across, and that's liable to see the wrong people (people who do use memes as dogwhistles to find out who is 'just playing the game' and who is 'their kind of people' , if you catch my drift).
It's shit. I'm pretty sure 99.9% of the people here just want to read some books, play some games and have some fun. I know I do. But the sad fact is, if we ignore that 00.01% of toxic shithead who have an ulterior purpose, then gaming spaces can become really not fun for anyone who doesn't fit into their mould of 'the right person to be here'. I've seen it happen with women, trans people and queer people in general (Not so much with racism thank goodness, but I would not be surprised if it happens). But given how the world is, particularly after recent events in the US, it's something we have to, as a community, watch out for. And it's not helped when a AAA game dodges the ugly without thinking critically about what avoiding those horrible bits might do down the road.

I mostly agree with you and have criticised Adams video too, but I have to make a small correction.
He didn't claim that ALL people like the imperium because of the horrible way it acts, but that fascists do. And he wants GW to show even more overtly and on the nose, that that fact is meant as satire and that very progressive stuff (or at least values we see as normal today) is present in the imperium and accepted as normal, even among its horrible doctrine.
I know where he is coming from, but he worded it very aggressive towards the fanbase and pretty arrogantly. Also I think his ideas are cooked up to haphazardly and without enough substance behind them.
More like a quick brainstorm and less a fully fledged out critique and ideas for improvement.

Adam is not someone misguided. He pretty much admits in the video he just wants to "own the chuds who never played Warhammer", while he himself doesn't know what slaanesh is on the guardsman comic he shows. Hell, the point you made on the begining of the video about the imperium being evil is actually a good point that people can discuss about it without calling real life politics and going mental like he did.

The video games cut out all the evil the Imperium does by making it seem heroic and attractive. Except 40k was never made to be anti-fascist in mind. Because the imperium itself is not fascist, it's literally Roman medieval feudalism in space.
If anything, the tau is more similar to fascism than the imperium.
I feel like both you and adam are painting with too wide and simple of a brush here. Adam isnt saying memes are bad and posting 40k memes makes you a bad person, what he is saying is that the nature of 40k memes and how the setting has dialed back the overt satire and comedy of its roots has made it a lot easier for the bigots and neo nazis to use 40k as a dogwistle for thier hate, which is a really big issue for the 40k fandom, especially online. Also you left out the part of his video where he ties all this together to make said point, which kinda makes a strawman out of him, though I dont think you did that intentionally. That being said, you are correct in that the way Adam makes his argument MASSIVELY oversimplifies the nuance of 40k, and attempts to assert that the more heroic story of space marine 2 represents ALL of 40k, which is not in any way true, and trying to argue that neuance doesn't matter is bullshit.
Personalty, I do agree with adam 40k needs to re balance its theme a bit so its can be a bit more silly, bombastic and satirical, not just for the reason adam states but because I feel its a core part of 40k creatively thats really entertaining, and im sad its been dumbed down over the years. We also need to do A LOT better job moderating online 40k communities so the bigots cant get away with integrating into the popular discourse, I dont lump you into this category but black templars fans have a bad reputation for being assholes for a reason, and something needs to be done about shit like that in the fandom. But again, none of this negates that adam made his argument really poorly and that he clearly hasnt looked into 40k lore as deeply as he should have before making such an argument.

But i think Adam's video (as poorly worded as it is) has some merit, yes there are heroic characters that break the mold and try they'r best like thytus, and yes space marines are human, but that does not mean they are not brainwashed and bigoted, take Leandross in the first game for example he's the exact opposite of thytus,he was so infatuated with the idea of what an astartes is supposed to be that he ended up betraying his leader, and is he punished for this in the second game?? No he's mutch better off for it and he's now in a position were he can spread that same mentality on to others. In 40k following orders and not questioning your superiors gets you places.

Oh yes, the classic argument of “I’m not one of the bad guys therefore, none of us can be bad guys!”. Just because Adam isn’t specifically talking about you your local play community or officially endorse products doesn’t mean that there isn’t an issue. Because it is an issue it’s an issue that pops up fairly regularly. Adam is much more talking about the people at the fringes and the dangers of falling for their garage, and genuinely glorifying the ideals, the setting instead of engaging with it as a silly bit of satire and silly little toys that we like to paint and play with. The closest parallel I can think of is the Goth scene and it’s continued public statement to be against all forms of hate while simultaneously embracing people in groups known to exhibit absolutely abhorrent morals, and protect them from criticism. Most of that protection comes from arguing no not us because I could never be. In terms of logical fallacy for your argument I would call it something between a bandwagon fallacy or an appeal to tradition.
Thank you for making this. I think you make 2 good points that really resonate: "The Imperium is Evil. But the Human Spirit is Inherently Not," and (paraphrasing) "Liking a faction doesn't make you a shit person, being a shit person makes you a shit person." 40k is like any other fandom where assholes be assholes, and these assholes will try to co-opt their own ideals etc; it isn't unique to 40k. Besides, 40k is meant to be an escape from the real world and being the bad guy (or a good man in a bad world) is fun! Fight fascism in real life, but in 40k play whoever the fuck you want. Just don't be an ass.
