I'm impressed. One thing about the name "AB Sally". You said it like "Ab-sally". You might want to know that "AB is the Swedish abbreviation for "AktieBolag" which is like "inc" on an American company name. So remember that it should be said like A.B (space) Sally. Thanks for your video. I was actually in (kinda) the same storm on a Stena Line ship from Gothenburg to Kiel the same night. My mother was working on the ship and sadly many of the crew on "my" ship knew people in the staff of Estonia. That's because some of Estonia's crew used to work at Stena Line IIRC. Many sad faces on this Stena ship that night. I will never forget that.
@@michaelheimbrand5424 thank you for this correction! I have seen it with a capital AB and Ab before so I was unsure! Thank you for this and sharing your story ❤️❤️❤️ I'm so glad you were safe that night! It was such a horrific situation aboard MS Estonia and I cannot imagine being in that storm.
@@shipwrecksunday Thank you. It was rough weather but it was certainly worse at Estonias location. We were probably around the southwest of Sweden when it happened. The ship was one of two sisters (can't remember which). They were called Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica. Also ROPAX but a bit larger than Estonia. Apparently one of those two sister ships can be looked up today under the name "M/S Stena Vision"
Fun fact: medieval peasants would try to illegally sell extra animals without declaring them to their lords. Piglets would be put into bags (pokes) and handed off in shady deals, but some scammers would put other animals in them like cats. Hence, you don't 'buy a pig in a poke' because you might just 'let the cat out of the bag.'
I'm so glad I came across your channel. I never thought i would enjoy the stories of how ships were built and what was their final destination. Thank you for giving an old man something that stimulates his intellect and something to look forward to.😊❤
Thank you so much for this video once again, Miss Elinor. This was so interesting! While we all know how the MS Estonia sank, we didn’t know much about her early life. Thanks to you, we do now. Thank you again for making this video
Thanks Elinor. I have never seen any videos of anyone who actually took the time to show the building of this RoRo ferry or bother to show the interiors of this ship. I still have a book called "Shipwrecks" which shows this ship, but it's only of the wreck and what happened as a direct result.
My friend lost both of his parents in that ship wreck. There have been conspiracy theories and unanswered questions about the cargo and diving's done to the wreck later to retrieve items. I think the sinking was a combination of everything that could go wrong. The final truth might be never revealed and will sink into the obscurity of history.
@@SuperMAZ007 I'm so sorry for his loss - that would be devastating beyond belief. I think there's a lot of unanswered questions, and finding answers (if possible) could bring a lot of closure. But, it will never bring the victims back and that's the heartbreaking part. Thank you so much for sharing that, and I wish the best for him.
@@shipwrecksunday A lot of people lost there relatives or entire families. The people who survived the sinking have still to this day nightmares and reflections of the event. If you search up the survivors stories the real struggle was not escaping the sinking ship but also surviving the cold and brutal waves that could kill you in a instance.
Do come review the SS Badger which crosses Lake Michigan. Coal fired. Get an affordable stateroom and have lunch or dinner on board. Great share. Thank you, as always.
Hey you struck close to home for me. I remember her. In Tallinn there is a very long shoreline and a good view of port and ships departing for Helsinki and Stockholm so my dad often took me there for shipspotting. I didn't get it at the time but in 1993 when she came Estonia was a really big deal for my dad and he even took a photo of me at the seaside with Estonia departing in the background dated july 1993. I was 6 years old back then. A year later she was gone. It was really scary.
Omg! I cannot imagine that. I'm so glad neither of you were on the ship when she sank. That must've been a really scary time for you all. Thank you so much for sharing you and your dad's story with me! That is incredible, and incredibly sad.
Great thought on a build video before a wreck video. Gives the viewer more detail background. They can appreciate your detailed videos at a higher level. No one is doing this. If you came up with this idea we will see how it turns out. I already know🎉🎉
There is also Skynea history who does design, construction, as well as service history in many of their wreck videos :D they specialize in warships specifically
@@shipwrecksunday yoir more then welcome, it's a shame that the design was flawed and that innocent lives were lost. The ship itself could have been designed a bit better specifically the bridge issue. Speaking of the bridge (I haven't watched the video as of yet so this is pure speculation) I wonder if there was plans to fix the issue or not.
There’s two cruise ships not expedition ships that have a Finnish Ice rating one is laid up and the is operating. The laid up one is the before mentioned former Viking Saga, Sally Albatross, Leeward, Super Star Taurus, Silja Opera, Louis Crystal and Celestial Crystal. The other is Birka Queen, Royal Majesty, Norwegian Majesty, Louis Majesty, Thomson Majesty and now Crown Iris for Israeli Mano Cruises. Yes there are two Israeli cruise lines. One you heard of Carnival and the other is a one ship cruise line.
MAN isn't spoken like the English man, it's short for Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg 😉 So you spell it every letter by it's own and in German, the A is spelled like the a in water. Just in case you stumble over another ship powered by a engine of them. 😊 Besides building trucks and huge engines for ships, they also build parts for the Ariane rocket program.
We didn't know you was going to giving a lesson in Swedish 😂😂, anymore lessons planned, or do we have a pop quiz coming up?😂😂lol I'm going to go out on a limb here & state a contributing factor could easily been what I've been preaching about for awhile! Too shallow of draft! Granted it had been retrofitted, but 18 foot draft on a ship with 9 decks? It would do just fine in good weather, but I've been around high profile things my entire professional career of over 35 years! When you get bad weather, strong winds, it's going to do things to something not loaded correctly & listing to one side! The saddest part is over 800 lives lost. The saddest is only one child & only 26 women survived!! Call me old fashioned, but men being physically bigger and stronger should make sure women & children are saved first! I have to see my lung doctor later this week for testing. I have to travel there and back home, so i might be late for Friday's video? Thanks for the Swedish lessons 😂😂lol
@@Chevyman02 it's very true! Draft definitely plays a huge contributing factor, and could definitely lead to capsizing. Lmao I couldn't resist! I wanted to honor the nation most affected by the loss of Estonia (Sweden), and so I added some Swedish! As for the victims, it is absolutely the saddest part of this story and they died in such horrific ways that I cannot imagine.
