that make me laugh out loud.. I do the exact same thing.. roof, bed, chest, workbench and good to go.. now I want to do this .. who needs sleep anyway right ? :)
I really appreciate you actually showing the measurements at the beginning. I see a lot of building videos and they just show the timelapse like "Heres how to do it." Thanks for the 2 seconds it took to do so. I really mean it.
This was relaxing as hell. I would pay to watch a full orchestra play at full blast while this man literally builds a building. 10/10 would watch on twitch
I can appreciate that the approach you used to build this structure indicates that you either have experience building wood/timber framed buildings or you did a hell of a lot of research. Either way, I applaud you for knowing real building tech and utilizing it in this game. You just made me realize that I already know how to build in this game. I just wasn't taking it seriously enough.
Beautiful, I love the fact you can level the ground before building, and even though you've used a lot of beams In the structure the inside space is still open and looks fantastic, you're passion for building shows in each of your builds and so glad you share that with us 🥰
Yep. I built this 3 years ago. I found the video again after i saw a screenshot of my build. I used a bunch of the darkwood pieces for the new one. Looks absolutely amazing. Thanks for the Tutorial You did a good job with it.
Love your builds - and it's great that you are learning about the "stress mechanics" as it's improving your build techniques. :) You probably realize it by now - but you weaken your structure by putting it up on blocks the 2x2's, build your frame on the ground then the frame becomes foundation (blue/grounded), allowing you to build higher before things turn yellow/red. OR raise the ground up to touch the foundation after you get your foundations placed. I make sure the main floor touches the ground too - making them foundation blocks. Ideally, your 4m core wood logs would touch the ground, making them a grounded piece allows you to build even higher. You did such an amazing job leveling the area, and the finished building looks fantastic!! Looking forward to your next project!
my thoughts as well. the game doesnt use real structural integrity methods, it's actually just more of a "distance from ground" kind of deal. sometimes adding support beams, etc can help, but only if they're providing a shorter path to the ground for whatever the next piece attached to them is.
Thanks for the tips man I need to try out planting the 4m poles into the ground as you said 👍 and no I did not realise the beams being on the floor was better I was raising the ground below to make sure the 1m poles were secure in the ground. I did notice that the beams and floors can be placed on the ground and still solid even if they are slightly above it but I did not realise they can support a taller structure? thanks man I will defiantly test this out and make sure to get it in a video
@@ThePilgrimzProject apparently for the structural strength it counts the pieces to when it touches the ground. so if you places your floors on the 1m beams you already have 1 piece less to build higher.
@@sanderverhoeven2134 It's not so much pieces as "units" of measurement. Wood has lower units to support, while iron reinforced and stone have higher stress limits and actually let you build higher. For example, a Wood Beam or Core Beam both can support like 6 units above the ground (6 Walls/Roof tiles). Iron Reinforced Poles go even higher, and according to one guy who's been testing, Stone is even better, where it actually counts as the ground as far as supporting goes.
"Exposed" wood never goes below 50% damage from the rain. Yes, it's still annoying to have to repair foundation structures after every storm but it's not critical if those beams can't be reached by enemies and can't be seen by the player once the structure is complete. As far as I can tell, the "health" of structure sections has no bearing on it's ability to bear weight.
@Walter I find it mostly an annoyance when trying to roof rounded sections of a structure. Getting the top opening to be completely covered either makes it look really bad from the outside or you end up with tiny "exposed" sections that let the rain in to damage the floors and beams in what should be a completely covered area. Hopefully we get new roof tiles to accommodate the ability to build rounded buildings.
Haven’t even watched the whole video yet and just because u gave the dimensions in each still frame you sir have earned my sub will be watch more of your valheim vids!
Your way of building has given me tips on how to build the Hearthfire houses from in Skyrim. With my first building, I didn't think to use the pickaxe and the hoe together to level the ground, but now (thanks to these tips) I can make the building layout at least. Got the perfect place in my single player seed in mind. Thank you so very much for showing how you build. 😀
@@ThePilgrimzProject Not a problem. By now I got the house *mostly* finished (it just lacks a few extra decorations), and by now I am way more advanced than I have ever been. Combination of Stone and Wood has been a huge relief, but at the same time a pain in the backside because of constantly going back and forth to get the stone needed for the house. XD So been a busy bee since the last reply. Again, thank you very much for the building/aesthetic tips.
Since I found this game a week ago, I sleep less that 5 hours a night...every night. Never in my 31 years of existence have I played something so addictive.
Raise the ground under your vertical core logs until they become blue when highlighted by the mallet. Blue means they are in contact with the ground and you can get another build level to your structure. The color codes indicate how many links to the ground--there is a limit. Color is not really a stress or weight indicator. Using 4 unit core logs anchored to the ground allows for larger builds.
Yes. The fondation in this video makes no sense, it's better if the 4m logs are directly in the ground and you build from there. You can use the 1m log just to anchor first floor into the 4m log, then you build out from it and you just got 3 extra meters of fondation support to work with.
Just spent the weekend recreating this masterpiece, If going with this exact build a Hearth is needed in order to be able to sleep upstairs. When you think you have enough Wood, you need a whole lot more. Awesome video
I have not spent a tremendous amount of time with a few friends. And with help with the resources I have built this mead hall. I have a slightly different interior then you and I turned the larger curved room into a Kitchen. But I love it and thank you so much. We are about to go take down Bonemass for the first time soon.

Just finished your build! INCREDIBLE guide. Subscribed. Advice for anyone else building this: RAISE THE GROUND!! The top floor needs to be green in order to support the roof
@@kaito8372 once you get to bronze you can replant all the grass. Apart from that, the comment above says most of what you need to know. Only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to make troll trenches look fancy.
the hoe levels the ground you are pointing at to the height where you are standing. To level it to the center of the cursor, use LShift + click. This is how you get a nice hill for a path etc when you want instead of jagged craziness
Pro tip: during daytime, find a troll in the woods, preferably far away from your camp (use portals), and kite it. The troll will smash trees and stones for you and you'll end up with the wood (and Stine) needed for this house in no time. Me and my so built this house last night and it looks amazing! Thanks for the vid!
It took me smth around 10-15h (lost timing) but i build it with few adjustments. I had a lot of fun doing this, during this project i think i learned all the necessary tricks in building. Thanks a lot for the vid, great stuff !
i'm not good at building in these types of games - I usually end up building ugly box houses. your guides for valheim are both great blueprints to straight copy and for helping folk understand the building systems to make their own. thanks duder! looking forward to your blacksmiths :D
Having just finished my build using his same footprint/design (with some of my own changes par preference of course), I'll tell ya, it was many woods, as it I had to cut down entire forests for this build lol
gathering isn't terrible, just get the elder powerup and run around with a cart, you can easily get a full cart of wood before the 5 minute powerup runs out
Thank you very much. I appreciate the walk through that you done to build this wonderful Viking home. I just built myself one from falling along with this video. It was lot of fun and again thank you very much for your great detail to this building video
I have to admit, the building system for Valheim has a heck of a lot of what I've been wanting in other games for a very long time. I really like that no nonsense approach. Being able to just rotate and snap like that is really nice. I might have to try Valheim .
Having a similar problem. I’m stuck building the top floor. The highest wood beams across and some 26degree crosses always crush on me. And do the 2m poles that you add on the bottom of those 4m poles really add stability? The color was the same so I left them out. Will try with maybe.
In short, unit touching ground is blue, next one green, then yellow orange red. Using high beams instead of multiple short ones is better. It's not based on physics as much as how many units it is from ground. Rock is counted as ground I think, maybe metal braced beams too.
Green means its connected to a piece that is touching the ground. If he instead simply put all those bottom beams directly on the ground instead of on top of the 1m poles, they would all be blue, and everything built on top of them would be green. Thats what makes the core wood beams so valuable, they can go twice as high as a regular beam and still be a "blue" foundation piece.
Your builds are just top-notch. The thought of gathering that much wood kills me. Also watching this made me wish that we had a quicker method of switching between building materials to help in these mammoth builds.
I've built the similar house but even bigger using only logs as support and reached 7m ceiling on the top floor with standard stairs - it took 5 hours and tons of wood! Thanks for vid, it helped to understand the basics. =)
Yeah but have you tried to build it without? I did today and I’m stuck at the very top. This planks keep crashing on me. I will report back if this was the Solution.
@@marchamill ok good to know. I sort of got it to work now as well without the 2m poles. Instead of an actual cross at the top we put two 26° planks so they look like a cross.
My friend built the longhouse from his previous video, and I'm in the process of building this monstrosity. Both buildings are in our little village area (close to each other and with other buildings). You certainly get a lower FPS near buildings, and the more you build the more the drop. That being said, my computer was built in 2013, is a fairly solid gaming build, and it handles it quite well. I don't think it has many effects on the server, but if your personal system isn't very good, you might run into trouble.
"And we have this amazing procedurally generated game set in the Viking era, where you can go up against mythological deities of yor ..." Geordie: I'mma gonna build me a pub And a very nice pub it was :)
Hey Pilgrimz I wanted to thank you so much for this build. I've been watching your videos for a year or two, and I love the designs you have. I built this one in my world and I did want to let you know that if you put a fire in the middle of the base, the smoke just pools on the ceiling in the center. there is no negative effect by going to the upper floor with the smoke. feel free to center it up if you'd like!
Have you ever thought of listing the ridiculous and ludicrous amounts of materials it takes to build these? I'm interested in knowing what it takes to accomplish a task of this magnitude. Also, I love these videos. Thank you for taking teh time to show people what can be accomplished in game, as well as sharing your skills with the rest of us!
Right time to repair my tools, go chop down a couple hundred trees and start building this incredible mead hall, my mates going to be so happy when I finish building this!! Thanks dude!
Thanks so much for this! I had a blast following along. Took me two days, but I managed to get my own mead hall up! Not sure if I missed it, but I couldn't find the part where you build the stairs to the 2nd floor. I eventually made my own solution, but I appreciate the time you spent making the vid. Great work! Looking forward to more vids.
Hey Pilgrim. I'd first like to say, I don't typically comment on any video but I really appreciate the time you put into these and the designs you offer. Next, I'd like to offer some suggestions that may help others with issues I had when trying this build myself. I felt that I followed everything to the letter, but I still had support issues when doing the final details at the very top. I resolved this by raising the ground around the primary load pillars until they showed as blue/foundation pieces. You can do this, and still be able to place flooring without any dirt clipping through if you are careful. Second, on your round structures, I found I was able to find the snap point quicker if I added both pieces of a specific angle (lower and upper) at the same time, before moving to the next piece. I just seemed to be smoother for me when I was working on that portion. Finally, thank you thank you for the time you are putting into these. I especially like the above views you add prior to moving into the next build phase. It really gives good detail when laying things out. I'm subscribed and looking forward to more content!
Addendum: Your moderation at the beginning is very personable and friendly - the musical background is also very demanding and epic - also for that & your effort, thank you very much - your videos are real brilliant. 🐻🐯
I built your small cabin and your longhouse, and both worked great (did a few changes myself, but in the end it really worked out) Thanks a lot for your hard work, I'm really looking forward to build this hall!

This is what a civil engineer does in his free time (if there is any) xD
The troll trench is just awesome! Just having the building on a high plateau is awesome!
For anyone who has built this, a hearthstone in the same spot his fires are will reach heat to the top floor.
Help, can’t find what is a Hearthstone
@ once you find iron you can craft a stonecutter which will unlock the hearth. it's basically a stone framed fire pit.
Oh my god you are a genius. This is beautiful. Just built a large ass viking mead hall but the roof was a pain. Definitely doing the structural foundation* first. Thank you!
This is what Medieval Engineers could have been if Keen Software House hadn't abandoned it....
Just finished your build! INCREDIBLE guide. Subscribed. Advice for anyone else building this: RAISE THE GROUND!! The top floor needs to be green in order to support the roof
tutorial for leveling the ground please, your ground looks perfect
Oh yeah me too. My Ground looks like at World War I Field.
@@kaito8372 i love this comment
The leveling is based on the height where your character is standing. Took me longer to figure that out than it should have.
I wish there were more log pole options, a log cabin would be pretty neat, angled log beams
You can build full log cabins/long house, just lay all the horizontals, a few iron beams for strength for really tall houses.
It took me smth around 10-15h (lost timing) but i build it with few adjustments. I had a lot of fun doing this, during this project i think i learned all the necessary tricks in building. Thanks a lot for the vid, great stuff !
i love how the music fits the snapping and builidng from 39:10 - 39:30 :D
i'm not good at building in these types of games - I usually end up building ugly box houses. your guides for valheim are both great blueprints to straight copy and for helping folk understand the building systems to make their own. thanks duder! looking forward to your blacksmiths :D
Imagine gathering the wood for this
lmao
Having just finished my build using his same footprint/design (with some of my own changes par preference of course), I'll tell ya, it was many woods, as it I had to cut down entire forests for this build lol
The wood gathering is manageable, dont even get started on the rocks for the ground raising tho lol
gathering isn't terrible, just get the elder powerup and run around with a cart, you can easily get a full cart of wood before the 5 minute powerup runs out
@@screenname9872 problem is with a build this big you would need many many carts full of wood
Thank you very much. I appreciate the walk through that you done to build this wonderful Viking home. I just built myself one from falling along with this video. It was lot of fun and again thank you very much for your great detail to this building video
Imagine if he had to go pickup a log and carry it back to the house every time.
I have to admit, the building system for Valheim has a heck of a lot of what I've been wanting in other games for a very long time. I really like that no nonsense approach. Being able to just rotate and snap like that is really nice. I might have to try Valheim .
damn I can only dream of being this creative. I might just copy this str8 up cus I cant design for shit lol
Lol same boat here
I have a tone of practice and I don't work, so I can spend all day watching documentaries on architecture and playing building games 😁
@@ThePilgrimzProject well thank to u i have a nice base now ty bro
Looking up building architecture helped as a start for me. And keeping in mind that being creative is as simple as drawing a squiggly line.
It took me 8 days to build this. Thanks for the great guide. I respect your effort.
Thanks man hope you enjoy living there now 👍
How did you get green on the top of your build? Apparently I do not understand the stress mechanics.
Having a similar problem. I’m stuck building the top floor. The highest wood beams across and some 26degree crosses always crush on me.
And do the 2m poles that you add on the bottom of those 4m poles really add stability? The color was the same so I left them out. Will try with maybe.
the 2m log poles on the ground add stability.
In short, unit touching ground is blue, next one green, then yellow orange red. Using high beams instead of multiple short ones is better. It's not based on physics as much as how many units it is from ground. Rock is counted as ground I think, maybe metal braced beams too.
What I did was raising the ground up to everything at the bottom was a foundation unit (blue)
" - SO, ow many wood did you use for this?"
" - YES !!! "
😁👍
@@ThePilgrimzProject For real tho, how much did you use? estimated
I've built the similar house but even bigger using only logs as support and reached 7m ceiling on the top floor with standard stairs - it took 5 hours and tons of wood! Thanks for vid, it helped to understand the basics. =)
Why put the small poles beneath the larger poles when there's already the 1m beams there?
I don’t think he fully understands the stress limit mechanics, seems to be adding a lot of extra support that is unnecessary
Yeah but have you tried to build it without? I did today and I’m stuck at the very top. This planks keep crashing on me.
I will report back if this was the Solution.
@@tobystimelapse6000 I don't think so. I've just finished this house without using is underneath pole technique and it works fine.
@@marchamill ok good to know. I sort of got it to work now as well without the 2m poles. Instead of an actual cross at the top we put two 26° planks so they look like a cross.
So i built the mead hall and i have to say it was so fun and relaxing and i did my own thing with it ! Its wonderful and i thank you for the guide
i wish i had ur brain
can u do a castle? :)
1st Video I've Seen! I'm sold! Fantastic work. Instant subscribe.
What was the point of putting 2 meter logs under the 4 meter logs when u already had the support from the foundation? 16:12
I have this question too. Although I am stuck at the top right now. And I’m starting to think the reason is because I skipped this part.
@@tobystimelapse6000 This was the reason. I had to pop out sections of the floor to go back and add them. Shouldn't have skipped them myself.
I've been stoked for this since you teased it in the round house vid. Looks amazing man.
How does a building like this affect server performance/frame rate?
My friend built the longhouse from his previous video, and I'm in the process of building this monstrosity. Both buildings are in our little village area (close to each other and with other buildings).
You certainly get a lower FPS near buildings, and the more you build the more the drop. That being said, my computer was built in 2013, is a fairly solid gaming build, and it handles it quite well. I don't think it has many effects on the server, but if your personal system isn't very good, you might run into trouble.
Love the building, I'm amazed you grinded out the materials to build it as opposed to showing us the build in "creative mode". Keep up the good work!
"And we have this amazing procedurally generated game set in the Viking era, where you can go up against mythological deities of yor ..."
Geordie: I'mma gonna build me a pub
And a very nice pub it was :)
i used this video as insperation for my own build, reaslly love it !
Great job on the build man !
Do you know roughly how much wood is needed?
at least 12
His longhouse build used ~1750 Wood. So...idk. tripple that?^^
wow dude. one of the best build guide tutorials ive watched. really great work
Hey Pilgrimz I wanted to thank you so much for this build. I've been watching your videos for a year or two, and I love the designs you have. I built this one in my world and I did want to let you know that if you put a fire in the middle of the base, the smoke just pools on the ceiling in the center. there is no negative effect by going to the upper floor with the smoke. feel free to center it up if you'd like!
your videos has inspired me to create a whole town so keep it up i am looking forward to seeing your progress!!!!!
Thanks for the vid,it's given me some ideas, along with a few tweaks about how to eventually build,my IRL mead hall styled home on my homestead.
This is the first proper build for a house I have seen and it reminds me of Keralis and I love it MY GUY!!! KEEP IT UP!! Earned a sub here
Have you ever thought of listing the ridiculous and ludicrous amounts of materials it takes to build these? I'm interested in knowing what it takes to accomplish a task of this magnitude. Also, I love these videos. Thank you for taking teh time to show people what can be accomplished in game, as well as sharing your skills with the rest of us!
A great build. I learned a lot about build mechanics in this game. Thank you.
This. This is how good Building videos look like. fantasic work
Dude I enjoy watching you build so much. Many thanks.
Right time to repair my tools, go chop down a couple hundred trees and start building this incredible mead hall, my mates going to be so happy when I finish building this!! Thanks dude!
Hope the build went well 😁👍
This is so amazing looking just started a little over a week ago got my wife interested and 2 of my boys too!
So many helpful tips in here. Definitely some solutions to problems I’ve already come across.
I built this to spec. Thanks for the tutorial. Love it. Looking forward to your docks video!
your videos are so inspiring, i havent even bothered upgrading to iron since i enjoy building so much
Music on these videos is amazing! 10/10
I built your small cabin and your longhouse, and both worked great (did a few changes myself, but in the end it really worked out)
Thanks a lot for your hard work, I'm really looking forward to build this hall!
This was an awesome build! I took inspiration from this this build to set up the core of my build and then expanded off it. I've gotten a lot of compliments off the final product, and each and every person I've sent back your way for the credit! bravo my good sir!
Thanks so much for this step by step video of this awesome building!
Great stuff man! i just picked up this game yesterday.... Building mechanics are nicer than ark, but boy is it tedious. but the ability to make your own flat land is just.... amazing. Beautiful work!
