They also are using e-axles with more power and larger modern battery packs. I think this truck is more a lesson in how good integration doesn’t fix poorly chosen components and poor design choices. Edison’s conversion program is steering clear of stock engines and slapping motors in front of transfer cases…specifically for the reasons Robert speaks of. They have two hybrid logging trucks, one done in this fashion because the didn’t have access to e-axles when thy were doing development work, and even it outperformed an equivalent ICE only vehicle. Fellow Vtrux owner here. Mine is black and an LT.
    I think there are fewer VTrux sold than you implied. I look forward to your teardown video as it may help me in the future to keep this truck on the road.
    Battery may be underperforming. Mine has a little over 40k miles, and I still get 40 miles on a mix of city/highway with the climate off. Climate control degrades range much more than you would expect and higher speeds kill range as you would expect driving a brick. I used it as a daily driver to work for years with a 40 mile drive and could make it home 95% of the time without the engine kicking on.
    Few notes:
    -The single motor on the transfer case gives you 4wd with minimal changes to the truck. Definitely the right call for Via Motors. The lash in the drivetrain makes me baby the accelerator from a stop.
    -It is slow and heavy (almost 7k lbs). I think the battery is too small to allow a larger draw. (c-rate) I find it sufficient for a truck though. Think you have to remember what batteries cost over 10 years ago and space requirements. They already shrank the gas tank to make this fit. (15 gallons)
    -The coupling is the noisy part on the drivetrain. When "idling" you can really get some rattle out of it.
    -You can start driving when the lights are still on the dash. Boot up is quick enough to turn on and just start driving.
    -The cooling system is insufficient. The truck will get too warm in a hot climate, especially if towing.
    -I just took a ~300 mile trip last week and got 20 mpg at 70-75 mph which has been pretty standard for me. This was as indicated electronically though, as I have not confirmed with gasoline fill before. My lifetime mileage is about 65mpg.
    -The truck has a "feature" to run on the gas engine for ~20 miles every 5 days. Calendar days, regardless if the truck has been run. Some excuse about the evap system requirement.
    -The generator revving up/down instead of a more constant speed for efficiency is a CARB requirement if you believe Via Motors.
    -I also look forward to the Ramcharger, but I would guess it will be about 5x the cost I paid for my VTrux with

      I've always thought that an electric gas hybrid like this was ideal, like a modern train engine. I think the efficiency is just bad since you're converting at low efficiency from gas to rotational force, then converting that at a loss to electricity which again loses some to heat to get the voltage right for charging.

    @TWX1138 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +107

    Another thing they did wrong in hindsight, sounds like they didn't do any rework of the 4.3 to optimize it along with the generator module for efficiency. Part of the disadvantage of most combustion engines is that have to have a wide power band so that they work well off the line, accelerating mildly while at speed, and while cruising at high speed. The transmission can only accomplish so much so they have to work well at 1000RPM, at 4000RPM, and everything in between.
    If they chose an electric motor that ran at say, 3000 RPM, and then reworked the gas engine to run most efficiently at 3000RPM, they would have probably had something useful in retaining it. But they presumably didn't do this, so the 4.3 is throttled up and down in a way that is both inefficient and sounds bizarre compared to the driver's input.

    • @marvin1432
      @marvin1432 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

      Jep, and the engine is probably oversized now to. With the electic drive you shouldn´t need high peek power for acceleration / inclines anymore, just enough to keep the battery toped off.

    • @gluttonousmaximus9048
      @gluttonousmaximus9048 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      A modern hybrid powertrain most certainly opts to limit the engines' peak output for maximal efficiency. If the engine's supposed to drive the wheels, it has high efficiency in most rev speeds, while if it's supposed to generate only, it has an insane peak efficiency in maybe 1 tiny rev speed range and just sticks there.

    • @TWX1138
      @TWX1138 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@marvin1432 not sure I'd go quite that far, a common application of diesel-electric involves directly powering the drive motor from power generated at the genhead. Diesel electric locomotives work this way. Up until recently they were DC powered too, rather than using an AC system with batteries to achieve more efficiency. All that said though, the advantages typically revolve around being able to output more total power and required than just for charging the battery so that if the vehicle needs the extra power for inclines or other stressful situations it has it. For that to work though the final drive motor needs to be more powerful than the gasoline motor and genhead. They didn't do that in this case the final drive motor was weaker than the original powertrain and thus it was incapable of providing battery plus combustion power at the same time. This is kind of like hybrid 101 and they failed that. The concept they had in mind wasn't horrible but their implementation basically was. They didn't balance storage, generation power, and drive power in a way that actually makes sense for a truck.
      In some ways I'm reminded of that Oldsmobile arrived 350 cubic inch diesel that GM played with back in the late '70s. It was unsuited to just about everything, it did not have the power of a typical diesel, wasn't rated for towing, could only provide fuel efficiency, and despite the wider bore spacing of the Oldsmobile engine over the typical Chevy 350, lacked extra head bolts to ensure that the compression stayed in the cylinders. They even put the thing in to pickup trucks making trucks that couldn't tow because the engine was not rated to tow. In the case of that 350 fuel economy was the only requirement and while it achieved that, it was such a bad motor that they're virtually all off the road now.
      If they had used a final drive motor in this hybrid truck that had the power output capability of the V8 vortec engine while using this 4.3 as the power gen head and had the battery capacity to drive performance with both combustion power generation and batteries then it may have been possible to run the engine efficiently along with giving power to make the whole package work better. But for some reason they didn't do that.
      I suppose it is a step in the right direction as far as actually proving they can make a vehicle move down the road and achieve something, but it's certainly not an achievement to be proud of.

They are mainly focused on building heavy-duty equipment right now but are also working on a conversion kit for regular pickups as well using a small diesel 4 cylinder as a generator. Also keep an eye on Deboss Garage here on TH-cam who are working with them to show how to do the conversions.

Even used, I can get over 50 miles of EV only driving, and it's really zippy and fun to drive for only 170HP - not to mention almost completely silent if the air conditioner isn't running. Great video! I have a similar relic, but then European style. I have a Mercedes Sprinter from previous generation, that was converted to electric. They made 300 to 500 of them before going bankrupt.
    It also has steel boxes with LFP in them around the driveshaft. But in my case, the (Siemens) motor is bolted to a regular transmission. Which is terrible because you cannot hear if the engine is still spinning when you release the clutch. But it is also great, because you can actually use the gears when the low amount of power (or torque) is not enough.
    It is a 9 seater and was also 2700kg on registration papers, and 700kg of that was the battery pack. I'm putting in 80kWh from a BMW SUV, twice the capacity and end up being lighter than original.
    It isn't fast either, but with the gears it should still do fine with some hills. And there is quite some room to boost performance with a different inverter. The Siemens motor is overqualified so for short durations you could draw much more power.
    They didn't bother trying to heat the interior for 9 people electrically, they just put in a diesel heater with a small tank. Which was probably better because the range with heating a van with all windows around on 40kWh would be terrible.
    And also in this case, the LFP batteries were required to work quite hard. But not as hard in this V/A truck.

    After working in fleet and vehicle sales for years I have learned EVs are currently only for people who do not care at all about practicality and cost of ownership. Unless there is a major and I mean major increase in battery technology to lower the cost substantially (we are talking a 60 to 70 percent decrease in pricing), increase the energy held substantially (we are talking triple to quadruple the energy stored in the pack), and an effective 90 percent drop in recharge times EVs will never be a viable vehicle for most people. Hybrids are blowing them out of the water due to the lower cost of maintenance and lack of dependence on a charger that takes hours to recharge. All of this applies to cars unfortunately when it comes to trucks it’s a complete non start. Every fleet procurement department I have ever spoke to only wants dirt cheap maintenance, long term reliability, and something that can be abused by employees that will do everything imaginable to a vehicle they do not own. 8 years ago I oversaw a short lease of Tesla Model S and Chevy Volts the lease came due after 36 months and they lived the Volts but hated the Teslas. It boiled down to needing to charge to often and reliability issues with the Teslas. The Volts took all the abuse and miles and kept on going without issue but the Tesla cars had lots of issues not due to build quality (yes there was a ton of build quality issues but fleets don’t care if a dash squeaks) but to its EV design. They died in heavy rain, car washes, and constantly would run low or out of battery before the day was over so eventually they just pushed the Tesla cars out of use because they are not practical cars. The company doubled the volt count and extended the lease for all volts and returned the Tesla vehicles which almost all were dead. They aren’t the only ones that had these complaints it was very common and the company I worked for stopped offering long term leasing for them due to the cost of supporting these vehicles. Electric cars are only for people who are willing to deal with their expensive maintenance and lack of freedom and electric trucks are only for people who do not use them as trucks and see them as electric cars with all the same problems.
    TLDR; Electric trucks are not work vehicles and will struggle to ever be usable as trucks while electric cars are only for people willing to deal with high maintenance costs and lack of freedom.

    I love the idea of Electric cars with a Generator, it's how PHEVs should be... but they put such a small battery in it! The idea of an engine driving a generator to drive motors to drive the wheels is so much better, it's literally how Diesel Train locomotives operate, hence how they're called Diesel-Electrics, but clearly this truck just isn't it

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, with all the complicated mechanisms that go into making a hybrid work, just making an EV with an onboard generator seems like it would make things so much simpler. I guess the engineers decided it wasn't an option, but I do wonder if that decision was made before anyone put lithium ion batteries into a car, so they discounted it for reasons (battery size/weight) that today aren't a problem.

      Plug-in hybrids will never make sense to me as long as they're doing tiny battery packs that only get at most 40 miles of range. If I have to keep going to the gas station and burning gas to get anywhere, what have I accomplished? If I need long range frequently, a regular hybrid or full ICE makes more sense. If I need more than 40 miles but less than 2-3 hundred miles of range for most of my driving, a full BEV makes more sense. The use case for a car that gets maybe 40 miles of electric range is so incredibly niche.

    • @coastaku1954
      @coastaku1954 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mjc0961 I really don't get Plug-In Hybrids, like why plug it in? The range is like 30-70km which is very very useless. Plug-in Hybrids should have a big battery, 400-600km range with a generator when you need it

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mjc0961 I'd love a plug in hybrid. I live on the edge of a city so 90% of my trips are under 10 km and 95% are under 50 km, so it would give me basically a BEV without the cost of a large battery or the range anxiety of a small battery. Many of my neighbours are the same. If the battery in my 15 year old Prius wasn't completely worn out I'd stick a 200 VDC power supply in it and convert it to a PHEV myself, then I'd only have to go buy fuel once every year or two.

    • @Jehty_
      @Jehty_ 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      But isn't that more inefficient?
      You have to convert gas > rotational > electric > (battery) > rotational.
      Instead of just directly using the first rotational energy to drive.
      I always thought that trains only do it because a gearbox would be too complicated/expensive and trains benefit from the extra torque of electric motors.

      @@bartismoellis1052 I'm out west, also quite north and never even heard OF cicadas until about 5 years ago. I cannot hear them in the video, not even when he stopped to draw attention to them. Almost everything that someone in a video apologizes for making noise (traffic, chickens, children, trains, etc) I never hear in the videos. I think microphones are built to filter out background sound and only pick up the primary source.

    Wild. My dad worked for this company for the majority of my childhood. It was always sort of a funny affair that had really good intentions but couldn't quite get things right in the end(as you discovered). I remember he would pick me up from school in the vans while road testing them and we'd go out to abandoned roads and just punch it.
    Weird though that you mentioned that it was slow. My core memory as a kid was that the vans at least were wicked fast in a straight line compared to most vehicles on the road in 2016ish. My guess is that the ones my dad was driving around were in diagnostic mode and the ones they sold to fleets were intentionally less quick to try and get better range at the detriment of some features.
    The idea was super good but a bit too much in its infancy when they developed the vtrux for it to work, and by the time they got other stuff off the ground the company was already going under.
    Nowadays, a lot like other people I feel like edison motors seems to be finishing what they started and avoiding some of the investment pitfalls that plagued via.
    Seeing you review this reminded me a lot of my early days living here in utah. Serious blast to the past.

CAT diesel generator under the hood, big battery pack, as much off the shelf parts as possible for easy repair. I really like what thier doing

But mine can go up hill with out issue. It’s a neat truck but it does leave some to be desired but I drive from Washington to California and I use it for overland camping it works perfect for my needs. I can boondock with out issue
    Id buy one again.

I went to confirm before mentioning it here and discovered that 1) the auction was closed because there appeared to be no way to title the truck and 2) you already knew about it and had been asking questions about the vehicle on the auction site.
