    After tried electric bus I have to say it's beyond perfect. Low noise, no weird smell, low vibrations. Very comfortable.

    BYD have come a long way since. I remember watching this years ago and now London is full of BYD ADL Bus.

    Interesting project - sounds like a loud trolleybus. Wish they'd abandon those wretched door buzzers. Love the retro moquette - a bit like the old trolleys

    Very interesting. But one non-electric question. I see that the driver's compartment is a mostly glass partition. Is this for safety reasons to protect the driver? They started doing this in NYC after a driver lost his life due to an altercation with a passenger a few years back.

      Yes most if not all buses in the UK have a plastic screen to protect the driver from any 'awkward' passengers

      +Peter Curphey All buses in London do...many buses are used on 24hr/night bus routes which is perhaps when might get a fair share of "awkward" passengers, especially at the weekends.

    The Volvo E buses used in Stockholm are almost silent compared to the noisy BYD product.

      +Will Davis When electric buses are noisy its often because of electrical harmonics from the control gear or they have noisy gears on the driven axles.
      If you are ever able to visit somewhere where old trolleybuses are used (eg: Sandtoft BLCM or EATM British transport heritage centres) you'll discover that these vehicles are almost whisper quiet!
      Sometimes though being almost silent is not such a good idea, as people who hear nothing approaching do not always look when crossing roads...

    These buses seems to be good and a BYD Electric bus was tested here in Brussels but was rejected due to low autonomy

    Very interesting video. Though I must note, here in Calif. (and I believe all across the U.S.), we haven't seen a bus with a rear window since the 1980s.

      We have several hundred new buses with rear windows in New York City. The BYD bus made an appearance in Manhattan for approximately two months. I saw it a grand total of once and managed to ride it a grand total of zero times. The MTA seemed to like it, so we shall see if they purchase any.

    Why not use buried induction loops for charging or direct power on popular lines to avoid battery size and weight issues?

      +lohphat TfL Despite significant amounts of air pollution coming London's 8000 diesel buses TfL say that they are proud of their environmental credentials and point blank to refuse to use direct power (ie: trolleybuses).
      Because it was prosecuted for failing to protect the British people from air pollution (Supreme Court, April 2015) the British government is planning to investigate under-road induction for cars and lorries (as they drive along the roads), and no doubt if this works it will be used for buses too.
      This will not please the so called 'environmental' lobby groups and pro-cycling groups who only want to see fewer cars on the roads, not a solution which makes people feel happy that they can drive their cars without polluting the atmosphere.

      +lohphat I believe the Dept. for Transport are testing a few systems at present, but given Britain being the way it is, there is no tradition of major public infrastructure investment compared to mainland Europe. Unless TfL can come up with the money some other way, I doubt the government will fund the major street works necessary for induction charging - which would also garner anger from s skeptical public who would rather suffer the effects of ridiculous levels of air pollution (there is a large degree of scepticism about it amongst much of the population - "hippies causing a fuss over nothing!"). If there is a widespread roll-out of BEV buses, they will likely adopt the Chinese rapid charging system as well, which is a very high speed (i.e. much faster than Chademo). It's easier to deploy (just install the points in depots and a few strategic locations), and can recharge a bus within a drivers break time / shift change.

      By British standards, yes, but not compared to the sort of investment seen elsewhere in Europe or Asia. HS1 is less than 70 route miles, which compared to HSR projects in mainland Europe is effectively a spur line, whilst crossrail is a relatively minor project in comparison to the works on the RER or the urban rail expansion seen in Spain (both in Metro and Cercanias services).
      Historically, the UK has adopted a position more akin to the US in taking a very back seat approach to state involvement in public infrastructure. Whether or not it's good or bad is a political point, but it doesn't really change the fact that significant and direct state involvement in charging infrastructure in the UK is unlikely.

    All they need now's the ability to run as a straight trolleybus ! Nice idea, and the double deck ones seem very quick off the mark, just as their ancestors were. They've got to be better than some of the smokey joes we have here on the coast !

      I wish! TfL want to try everything under the sub EXCEPT trolleybuses. In other words, under the guise of wanting to reduce air pollution they will try all manner of unproven ideas whilst shunning the solution which has been proven viable. To my eyes this makes them not worthy of being seen as a professional organisation.

    The battery compartments limit the view toward the front too much. Many people, like me, are affected by motion sickness and these obstructions to the forward sight-line make it worse.

      I am usually OK on single deck diesel buses but must be careful upstairs on double deckers - especially if reading.
      I was OK on the battery electric buses however.

    I hope Wellington NZ see's your comments about trolley buses and trams been more viable then battery powered buses
    In the 1920's Gisbourne NZ had battery trams which didn't last long and too slow

      When vested interests rule the roost all sanity is lost. I am aware of the situation in Wellington, and how the people in positions of power totally fail to understand that replacing pure electric buses which are powered from mostly clean renewable energy with hybrid buses that are powered by onboard fossil fuel traction packages can only result in an increase in urban air pollution. Linz, Austria has just received the first of a new fleet of trolleybuses which also have powerful batteries so that they can replace all their existing diesel and electric buses without installing new overhead wires along the routes which do not already have them. Prague in the Czech republic is actually bring back trolleybus operation along a section of road so that it can introduce new battery electric buses

      citytransportinfo It is quite sad in Wellington, GWRC should consider blended on/off wire operation, battery can recharge during on-wire operation. Now they got some double-deck battery electric buses, require recharging at Island Bay (route 1 southern terminus). If wires still exist, the charging infrastructure can be saved, and battery can be recharged in slower rate, improve the lifespan of battery cells. Some trolley wire switches can be removed (like Albisriederplatz in Zurich, off-wire for routes 33 and 72) to simplify wires and reduce maintenance.

      Now that TfL are buying 50+ buses with BYD electric drive systems (chassis, batteries, etc, but not bodies) so buses EB1 and EB2 have been withdrawn from these services. They are going back to BYD (whether their UK offices or China factory remains unknown) and will be refurbished / brought up to present-day specification and then used by BYD as demonstrators.

    My god. Singapore also has a demonstrator BYD K9 but it has SMRT Specifications, Now they're with Go-Ahead which they have already got a lot. Perhaps send some of their London Examples to Singapore to help their Singaporean sister.
    Hopefully Go-Ahead will commission another type to Singapore, Maybe a BYD K8SR

      I suspect that only buses which meet SMRT specifications will be allowed to operate in Singapore. Buses built for London would need changing (unless there for a short stay).

    Hong Kong have over 70 % of all buses are British made double deck diesel buses for over the last 60 years , It is about time Britain buy some Chinese Hi tech electric buses for a change from the new modern advance CHINA .

      I do not recall but since there is no engine as such so would not really expect to.
      (the vibration normally comes as a result of the diesel engine).

      Electric buses are generally more reliable than diesels. They need less maintenance and are much better for their local environment (no poisonous fumes spewed in to the streets / breathed in by people using those streets).
      London's first electric buses were more reliable than the liquid fuel buses but unfortunately the genius behind them was a fast-car loving crook who used the company bank account as a personal piggy-bank. These were the London Electrobuses which ran prior to WW1.
      In the early 1950s London had over 1800 pure electric buses but despite the clean air legislation which solved problems from coal - sourced air pollution, by 1962 the electric buses had all been replaced with diesel buses. Now in 2015 we have even worse urban air pollution and higher death rates, with diesel transports of all types being the culprits.

      +Taylor Cohea Very rarely compared to internal combustion engined vehicles. They are far, *far* fewer moving parts and very little to go wrong. This is why early road vehicles were electrically powered. It was (and is) much simpler to build and run electric motors compared to internal combustion units. The restrictions up until recently have been the energy density (weight vs power stored) and cost of the battery packs rather than mechanical issues.

      Considering that the battery price will drop as worldwide production scales up and electric vehicles become more common, 10 years to recycle a battery doesn't sound that bad, specially taking into consideration that maintainance costs for diesel gives a higher overall cost.

      Think about it this way...would you rather replace a bunch of batteries every 10 years (with reducing costs) while providing zero emissions and requiring VERY LITTLE maintenance compared to a petrol bus...OR...would you like to perform maintenance every other month with much more moving parts that break down (belts, filters, chains, more filters, converters, etc). I'd put my money on the former.

      SMRT was supposed to have a BYD K9 but rejected the bus but after that it was taken up by Go Ahead Singapore (which won a tender to operate in SG) for a 6 month trail. The bus has yet to enter service but I hope it will be a success

      Its just an adornment / something to look pretty, as passengers who board at the middle door either have a season ticket so are unlikely to have their card read (even though they are supposed to do this) or are fare dodgers who also won't be using the Oyster card readers.

      +D600Active London's transport decision-makers seem to want to use any half-baked solution other than that which works best - I've tried to get them to see the same logic as you but their replies (yes, multiple) make it quite clear that whilst they are proud of their efforts to reduce bus derived air pollution they do not want to use trolleybuses.
      In 2011 an air quality study by independent transport professionals for a London local government found that diesel buses really are a very significant cause of urban air pollution. Quite how anyone, anywhere, can be proud of this defies rational explanation.

      +mynewschannel because at the time the diesel buses were cheap to buy and no-one knew about diesel air pollution. Because of the infrastructure trams and trolleybuses are seen as being more expensive in the headline costs, although as the vehicles tend to last a lot longer, are cheaper to maintain and there are no diesel fuel costs so in the long term they work out cheaper.
      Another issue is that the cost of healthcare for people suffering from ill-health because of air pollution is paid for out of the funds allocated to the NHS and therefore the people funding public transports do not see any benefit in paying higher headline costs for electric transports. When government departments are receiving funds from the Treasury they fight tooth and nail for every penny... the idea of transport receiving a little extra so that in 2 years from now healthcare will need less is totally alien to the decision makers.
      In Rome, Italy they built a trolleybus line because they worked out it would be cheaper to pay extra for the electric buses and power supply system than to pay healthcare costs.

      I am a member of the Yahoo Groups trolleybus group and from there I have learnt that to reduce urban air pollution Beijing is investing in more trolleybuses. A new trolleybus line opened only a few days ago! (autumn 2017) They tried battery buses but decided to have buses that operate in part time trolleybus mode as that way they can top up their batteries during the day - I wish that London did the same.

      Y Qisq Actually in recent years, Beijing Public Transport(BPT) has electrified several routes, include new wire installations for three out of four BRT lines, and some conventional routes if they have sufficient wire coverage, with some off-wire operation (w/ battery). In addition some routes received battery electric buses.

    Personally I think the end is close for trams... Tarmac over the tracks, take down the ugly and expensive to maintain power infrastructure and run autonomous electric busses along the route and the option easily add new route enhancements by using existing bus lanes. The technology is nearly here and any investment in new tram stock would be a poor and inflexible solution.

      +G8YTZ Hi there, I am curious to know why you say this. Is this your opinion?
      Can you offer any evidence to validate what you say? I ask because the
      evidence is the opposite to what you say with ever more European,
      American and Asian cities investing in trams, streetcars and light rail
      instead of buses.
      What is also happening is that some cities are starting to trial battery electric buses, but only as replacements for diesel buses. One city which started this a decade ago is Rome, Italy, where they used trolleybuses that have powerful batteries so can also travel as battery electric buses. However 8 years later they were having such problems with the batteries and the very high cost of replacement batteries that they decided that for use on unwired roads their next batch of trolleybuses should also have diesel engines - and not batteries.
      What is happening with trams is that rather than use overhead wires some systems use capacitors which are recharged at tram stops. Whilst the power density of capacitors is much lower than batteries (ie: they don't hold as much energy) they are expected to last the life of the vehicles.

      +G8YTZ That is a very bad idea. The London tram system is almost entirely separated from the road network, which gives it vastly superior journey times in terms of both speed and punctuality compared to buses, and actually reduce congestion on streets. They also provide far greater capacity on any given route than buses could realistically provide, and provide higher energy efficiency than an electric bus due to far lower rolling resistance of steel rail compared to tarmac, and also due to to lack of onboard batteries and consequently greater passenger density.
      I strongly support electrification of the bus fleet, but not at the expense of destroying tram networks, which one of the most short-sighted and destructive decisions of British transport policy in the 20th century (along with railway closures).

      G8YTZ Why on earth would you do that. The tram system is fine. The flexitys and the variobahns are running fine. Tfl wouldn't like what you said as they spent millions on the tram system. Plus buses are more for regional shorter stops. Trams are better for longer distance. And as for a train enthusiast ( I love trains) I wouldn't just want all roads and no tram. We don't want the beeching era again. Even though I don't know much about it. Because I was born in the 21st century. We wouldn't want that.
      And having all buses is plain idiotic that'll just increse pollution same as cars. Rail transport and metro and trams are just better and more efficient. I like buses as well but we don't want tfls millions of money to go down the drain. They've already wasted all there money on blooming S stocks replacing awesome D,C and A stock.
      Tarmacing the tracks. What a stupid idea. Especially for commuters, expresses and rail enthusiasts.

    They were trying these out in NYC. They were mostly using them on the M42 line along 42nd. I haven't seen them anymore so they must have not met MTAs needs. Then again, on busy 42nd street and a bus that can carry only 64 passengers seems like a useless bus to me.

      alas, the reality of battery buses is not so green - batteries are very heavy and carrying sufficient for a full day of travel costs much in energy consumption and (because of legal weight limits for road vehicles) also reduces the available passenger capacity of the bus. Overhead wires are a much greener way to power buses - the energy can come from many sources, including renewables.
      Where batteries work best is allowing trolleybuses to also travel away from overhead wires for part of the time - for instance half the route is wired and for the rest of the time the bus travels as a battery bus. In addition the batteries are recharged whilst the bus is travelling as a trolleybus. This is called 'in-motion charging' (IMC) and an increasing number of towns and cities are doing this, as it makes it very easy to convert diesel bus routes to electric traction - at minimal cost (beyond the cost of new battery-trolleybuses).
