I just got my 2012 2 weeks ago! I love it! It has been giving me 29.9 mpg in the city. Haven't had a chance for a road trip yet, but I'm sure it will deliver 40 mpg as promised. The usb is great. Bought a 4 gig flash drive, and loaded all my mp3s on to it. Hours of music, and all controlled from the wheel. I love this car!!!!!
I have this exact car and love it. I blast my music with it with power bass fairly high and man it sounds great. Gls is affordable and u get heated front and rear etc.
I just got to say that I've had an elantra for six years and had barely and mean barely had any problems. It's an awesome car. I love hyundais they are very efficient.
I've been in my friend's Elantra and wow is it roomy! It's quiet, comfortable, very well equipped, well illuminated inside, good handling, and smooth. I never thought I'd say this, but the Koreans are REALLY doing a great job. Usually the Korean stuff I see are crap (cheap drum sticks, guitars, drums, and mic stands), but this is actually really nice.
I'm 17 years old, and I bought this car, the exact model, from the wheels to the sunroof, only difference is mine has a manual transmission and is blue. However I have to say, I couldn't be happier. But there's a problem with their MPG. My Elantra gets roughly 40 MPG city, and 55-56 MPG highway. I'm not sure whether automatic cars are just that much worse than manual cars but I can guarantee my numbers are true. The ride is smooth, it hugs the road and it also packs a punch for a quick start.
@heroheroic If you get a GLS without anything on it, you won't get fog lights, but you can get a preferred package for the GLS that adds them in. They're also standard on the limited trim
Me and my dad rented one of these to go to Fla in...we left in the middle of the night specifically so we could test it out...i lie not when i say that we hit 148 mph in this thing and it was still climbing!!! I live in down town Atlanta so we have some lambos and ferraris running around...i promise u the entire time we had this car nothing came CLOSE to the speed of this car....
My husband works for Herz Rent A Car at LAX airport. Ever since this particular Elantra came out its being rented like hot cakes. They have a fleet of about two hundred Elantra's and as soon are people return them and they are washed they are back on the road being rented by someone else. I drove one and its an awesome car for less then $20K. MPG's are constantly in the 30's, roomy and quiet interior, look's decent and they all come with a 100K mile/10 year warranty. Go Hyundai!
@heroheroic Depends on which model you are talking about. I believe that for the 2012 Elantras, Hyundai started including a Preferred Package option for the GLS (the low-end trim). The Preferred Package has a few select features you will find on the Limited ( the high-end trim), like Hands-Free / Bluetooth, lit vanity mirrors and such. Fog lights is one of these add-ons. For 600$ or so, it's actually worth it than shelling out an additional 2000$ for a Limited.
"A Hyundai has never lived that long from what I know.." Don't know..,. don't care. I can't drive the same car more than about 10 years without getting bored of it , and I've had lots of brands.
Yes. the car is good looking but if you planing to buy it then test it during longer rides. I found the front seats uncomfortable for longer trips and the trunk opening is small when you trying to fit bigger items.
@Karime18 Yes, you're right. I've had an elantra 2003 for two years, and I bought it used with 82,105 miles on it. And I use it a lot; I've made long trips on it, last time i did one, it was 600 miles on one day, here in centro america and I have never have any problem. Not even a single one, and the engine is very strong, fast and all the way a soft ride. I even use korean tires: hankook, which are very good indeed. I love my hyundai and I'm not changing it for any other expensive brand.
The American car companies are not failing. Especially Chrysler and Ford. Chrysler is once again turning a profit, and has had growth for 26 straight months. Ford sales continue to rise. And while they still have a ton of debt to pay off, GM is doing somewhat better. Doug Betts is the head of Chrysler quality and he's been doing a fantastic job with consumer relations. Just test drove both an Elantra and a Focus and bought a Focus. The Elantra wasnt even close in terms of handling/ride quality.
I always had american cars i have a 2000 ford focus and it is great and runs great.I kept my focus and just bought a 2012 Hyundia elantra and this blows out any other car in its class. It has alot of leg room and is pretty fast, drove a 2012 focus and this car will never come close to a Hyundia elantra. This is by far the best car i have ever bought if i had more money i would buy my wife one in a heart beat.
I'm still amazed that some people still think Koreans still make cheap low end products. For example Samsung and LG is considered one of the top consumer electronic companies in the world. Korean ship building industry is considered the best in the world and world's tallest building in Dubai and many top 10 tallest buildings in the world are build by Korean engineering companies. Hyundai and Kia definitely have grown into a world class auto. It still have ways to go but I'm impressed.
These do look nice but I bet it does sit really low and the visibility could be an issue. I'm definitely going to test drive one of these..I like my '07 Focus but I'm ready for something new.
@Ozymandius666 Yes, I know that you use Litres, I'm saying the rating provided for 58mpg is using the imperial gallon as the 'g', which is smaller than the us gallon. when the math is done, the converted mileages are approximately the same. The engineering of the vehicles is identical.
Gas millage is in question on this car. My 2011 gets 20 mpg in-town and about 25 combined highway/in-town comb. check out the USA Today article about MPG
did sone rim work on one of these the other day, it was a limited fully loaded veryy veryy nice. i loved it and i usually hate imports, very quiet engine too.
@StuinthaHouse i like the chevy cruze too but its actually just a rebadge daewoo lacetti, makes you question the reliability on daewoo first as they didnt make it big in the US back in the 90's but are actually big in china today. the cruze has already had a few recalls, something about the steering wheel popping off at high speeds.
@Trook2008 tail fish phenomenon is not about the air back. about the steer problem. just normal drive can not recognize this phenomenon. but it has happen and it will coming to normal driver too.
I'd prefer to have the Chevy Cruze, it just fits my tastes better. I'm not saying the Elantra is a bad car. I think it's impressive how far Hyundai/Kia has come in just 5 years.
My 2005 XRS Corolla gets 37 MPG on the highway, and probably a bit better once I take a road-trip using non-ethanol fuel (which there is a gas station close to my home that offers not only ethanol-free, but also 92 octane). As for this car, I like it a lot better than the new Civics.
I don't think warranty covers animal damage. That should fall under your car insurance policy if you got full coverage it will cover hitting an animals/object
I went a Hyunda drive event today. It was a road course setup in a parking lot. No Genesis coupes, sedans or Sonata Turbos. Everything else thought. The Elatntra was my favourite. Now Hyundai how about a 1.6L Turbo--185hp witha DCT. Sold
Hey Tommy can I ask you a question? I've seen comments like yours a lot in different videos saying that Hyundai copies from other manufacturers. First I just want you to know that I'm majoring in Concept Design and I'm Korean but I don't like Korean cars. Let me tell you something, Car is a piece of a art master piece. Every art is copied by one another. Why would Hyundai even bother hiring designers if they're just going to copy? So tell me, what car does Elantra look alike?
I'm getting my first car pretty soon and my options are either this or the Accent, anyone have any opinions on which one is better, I don't know much about cars.
My Elantra gets 33/34 mpg on the highway not 40. We have over 50,000 miles on it and it hasn't gotten better mpg. Every owner I have encountered is saying the same thing about the mpg.
I guess it is a bit mediocre. Its not some $6000 stereo system, but its not some piece of junk found on the side of the road either. I'm not one to blast my stereo when I drive, so I like it for my everyday drive to school. However, I've found that the sound was significantly lowered when sitting in the back seat, but no complaints otherwise.
wasn't there a recall / gas card thing that Hyundai did for you in the USA??? i read about it a year ago and it's even posted on our Canadian Hyundai web site. something about flawed testing back in Korea.
@makeupkatie95 Thanks for the reply. Going to a car show tomorrow and the Elantra is a model that will be available to test drive - can't wait. Continue enjoying your amazing car and stay safe on those rodes.
That would be because it ONLY had 134,500 miles on it. Which is almost nothing for most cars. I have a 1991 Honda Accord with 354,000 miles going strong. A Hyundai has never lived that long from what I know
Can somebody help me? My husband hit a racoon while driving at night, on our new Elantra 2012 if we send the car to another shop instead of the dealer will they grant the warranty if I have another problem with the car?
@danjoe79 yes gas mileage is super inflated on this car. check out fuelly . com the average is about 30 if you are getting 40 on the highway the average should be higher
I wanted to buy the elantra, but what they don't tell you is that it sits so low, and has poor visability looking down in the front. My wife's line of vision was about 15 feet in front of her. Not safe at all.
I am talking about what my dealer and other Hyundai dealers in my city were claiming. I don't know about the UK mpg, only what we were told here in the US. Obviously I was gullible or too trusting of Hyundai.
The Focus is still ugly, and that's why I chose the elantra over the focus. The price certainly wasn't an issue. Was just going for something a little stylish with decent gas mileage.
Looks are subjective; the Focus is in another league compared to the Elantra in my opinion. Certainly interior styling wise, as well. The Elantra was smooth but not sporty to drive by any stretch of the imagination. The suspension was overly soft, the steering was far too light and provided no feedback, the engine was noisy when pushed...
that's most likely because you're using US mpg, not the "fake" UK mpg, which is what Canadian dealers / websites quote to make it appear that Canadians are buying better cars than in the US - dates back to when people were cross-border shopping when the USD-CAD exchange rate was so nice for us Canucks. basically, they mislead the gullible.
I think your wrong about the reliability, hyundai did not even placed in the top ten, while honda and toyota is, jd power put the civic and corolla the best value winners check their website
I get to go pick mine up from the dealer tomorrow! OMG IM SO EXCITEDDD

@chrisazarian amazing, the gas milage is awesome and it drives so well!
I have this exact car and love it. I blast my music with it with power bass fairly high and man it sounds great. Gls is affordable and u get heated front and rear etc.
I liked your style of reviewing more than the car. Very to the point, sensible approach. Many other auto journalists should learn from you.
I just got to say that I've had an elantra for six years and had barely and mean barely had any problems. It's an awesome car. I love hyundais they are very efficient.
Hyundai's making a nice new image for itself. Love these videos, great review and editing.

Yes, and I was contacted as were other customers, but Hyundai stated their highway mpg was off like 1 or 2 mpg. In reality they were off 6 or 7 mpg.

Apologies, backwardsed that. The imperial gallon is larger, granting the higher perceived mileage. 1 Imperial gallon = 1.20095042 US gallons .

it's the imperial gallons vs us gallons conversion. They get the same economy overall.
