I can't help but think that generative "AI"s will hit a practical limit in terms of both the datasets they need to improve (nominal improvements in output require inordinate increases in data) and the resources (both computing and electrical power) needed to generate that output. In simple terms, it will come down to cost vs benefit. The costs will only increase exponentially, whilst the benefits will be in smaller increments. (Computerphile did a video about this.)
@@fredsmith1970A rather small product promoting video production will set you back around $10k. Good Morning Mr. Barnatt!! I subscribed to your other you tube channel this morning and thoroughly enjoyed your 2024 update!I got up early as I have to go to work playing a Christmas show this afternoon! I'll catch up on your other channel when I get home this evening!! I look forward to spending 52 Sundays a year with you explaining computers!! Thanks for all you do and God Bless You!!
First, thank you for your videos! Also a very exciting topic for 2025 are silent PCs with passive cooling. This year I bought a refurbished silent mini pc which serves me as a home server and also this episode of explaining computers I am watching on a completely silent Chromebook connected to a 4K Monitor. The APUs are getting stronger and stronger while consuming less power. Chris, I hope you keep your eye on this topic too :)
Even if you talked absolute rubbish i would still watch, just for the joy of watching something thats not interrupted every few minutes with mindless adverts. The fact that you DONT talk rubbish, and are very informative, is the icing on the cake!😀
Congratulations on another successful year of your channel, Christopher! More than 1,000,000 subs! An amazing feat...and well-deserved because of your excellent content! Cheers!
The new channel is very interesting, and I did enjoy the steam model. But what is more important is the duck video on the new channel that needs further investigation 😉 Seriously though, it looks like exciting times for you on TH-cam.
I still plan on running W10 for another five or six years. I have W2K, W7, W8 all running along with W2K3, W2K8, W2K12, etc. I very much dislike W11. With all of my *BSD and Linux systems, I can certainly manage well without Microsoft. :) I keep trying to get people over to Linux desktop (Pop, Mint, etc.) but it's hard for a lot of users.
Mini PCs make a lot of sense now that we're moving beyond big honking hard drives and optical drives that once had to be housed inside a chassis. Everything is so miniaturized now, including even PSUs, that desktop computing is indeed possible without significant compromises in a tiny form factor. I've been moving that way myself, using a desktop PC case instead of a tower for my Linux gaming PC and an M4 Mac mini for work. I have an M1 mini plugged into my TV. The big machines just aren't really necessary any longer, and I like that. It's space-efficient and cost-efficient. I plan to have some fun with a Pi 5 as well by having it hooked up to a very small hub + display unit and a small speaker to sit by my PC and let me watch things while I game. I have a Pi 4 acting as a web server. I have yet another Mac mini hooked to a USB drive enclosure acting as my NAS. I love being able to do fun things with small computers.
Another great channel update Chris! Thanks for reminding me about the PI 5 case you reviewed this year. I will start saving my pennies to purchase one. Although I did test/install/purchase some of the things you reviewed, that one slipped through the cracks. Will you be doing anymore videos on installing Win11 on non-compliant PC's? Congrats on the new channel, and looking forward to an interesting 2025... especially the look into RISC computing, open source and avoiding traps like "AI" creeping into everything.
Perfect timing that this came out just as I finished watching the Steam Engine and Rotocasting video on your new channel. I'll have to slowly migrate to Photopea like you in the future as it's a bit of a pain to keep rebooting to Windows from Linux just for Photoshop. If I do end up using it enough I may end up paying for it. With Windows 10 ending support next year it feels like a good time to migrate more to Linux though I will keep a Windows 10 LTSC install just in case, but I can see some software slowly dropping Windows 10 support in a few years despite the embedded and enterprise versions still not having their support dropped since the mainstream uses the regular Home & Pro editions. I await for the "AI" trend to die down as its littered with marketing speak and slapping the name along with NPUs on hardware that doesn't benefit most users with the increase in price aside from the pockets of shareholders of big tech companies. Search engines trying to providing summaries and answers with "AI" is laughable since it tends to be wrong (looking at your Google and TH-cam).
Windows 10 is indeed the last Windows. The last Windows to have a tiny sliver of freedom of choice. TPM in Windows 11 and now AI bullshit in Windows 12, tomorrow it'll be brain chips in Windows 13. No thanks, I'd rather Linux (as I have been for the past decade). People have been warned. Whoever didn't listen so far probably won't anymore. For those I only wish a painless assimilation now (it's not like they'll even feel it anyway).
I skipped windows me, I skipped windows vista, I skipped windows 8, and I skipped Windows 11. God help us if Windows 12 isn't the Windows 7 or 10 or XP that we desperately need.
I skipped all versions of DOS and Windows and Apple's offerings; I mostly used UNIX and Linux systems, plus some RISC OS, and before that, the BBC micro.
the rummors i heard about win 12 are all oriented on the support for arm socs, the rest should be very similar to what we have now the npu stuff is what has me worried, i dont want any of that stuff near me, tbh my personal computers must do what i want, i dont want them to think at all

that was a false statement that microsoft never bothered on saying it was wrong, they said the latest os they made was win 10 being win 11 like 4 years old, keep this idea alive, brings nothing

Thanks for the yearly update Chris. I think this coming year will certainly be interesting as far as OS choice goes. As for AI, I can see its usefulness for many things but the way it's being forced upon us by Microsoft etc seems to be over the top. Expecting people to immediately upgrade to a system with an npu is outrageous so waiting to see what will happen with Windows 12 should be fun.

I skipped all versions of DOS and Windows and Apple's offerings; I mostly used UNIX and Linux systems, plus some RISC OS, and before that, the BBC micro.
the rummors i heard about win 12 are all oriented on the support for arm socs, the rest should be very similar to what we have now
the npu stuff is what has me worried, i dont want any of that stuff near me, tbh my personal computers must do what i want, i dont want them to think at all
Awesome! New channel! More CB😊
As a lifelong model maker, Chris, I'm excited about the new channel and already subscribed!
So happy I stumbled into your channel years ago. You're a very pleasant presenter.
i still need to pick up a Radxa X4, excellent review. Now heading over to the new channel. Especially looking forward to retro content.
I just subscribed to the new channel. Look forward to your videos on both channels.
Thanks. :)
Oh gawd! You have reminded me I have to move my dad's laptop off Win 10 onto Mint. He has managed to lose both sheets of paper with his passwords on. I shall bite the the bullet over Christmas..........
At least it means an end to Windows in the family. Thank the Lord.
I'm the only person in my family to use Linux!
@@Praxibetel-Ix That's not good. Not good at all. You are going to have to upgrade them................
@clangerbasher I don't think my parents will be very happy with me messing with their computers to that extent! 🤣
@@Praxibetel-Ix I only touch Windoze and Android when they break it. The latter is fun as I don't own smartphone.
@clangerbasher I've been a life-long Windows user and a years-long Android freak.
Can't say I'm all that excited about three linux distros which are merely derivatives of Debian, the real distro which really counts.
I never miss video of EC. Awaiting exciting episodes in 2025.
Oh good. Reasons to look forward to 2025.
Thank you.
Weldone Christopher.
Top respect for not bothering us with the scammy sponsors.
Is it my bad memory or just old age, but did I imagine that when Windows 11 came out, Microsoft said it would be the last operating system?
It was very widely misreported that they said that about Windows 10, although they never did.
that was a false statement that microsoft never bothered on saying it was wrong, they said the latest os they made was win 10
being win 11 like 4 years old, keep this idea alive, brings nothing
Great vid. I had to upgrade my hardware to go from windows 10 to 11, I'll be damned if I upgrade my hardware to go from windows 11 to 12!
Hey Professor, I Look Forward To Your Videos Every Sunday Morning. Thanks For Another Year Of Great Stuff! (Comment #186)
Thanks!
It's a tsunami of Barnett videos. Or should that be a Barnarmy?
PSA. It is with regret that my secret plans for world domination have been delayed until Christopher slows down a bit.
Sorry about slowing your plans . . .
@@ExplainingComputers It's ok, you weren't to know... Anyway, I'll get you at play time.
Congrats on your major achievement.

Mr Barnett - looking forward to retro computing 👍
Interesting times ahead i guess.
My suggestion for the Windows 11 unsupported hardware alternatives is: Mint your decision.
This is a GREAT idea! Just what TechnoTim did with his channel. I applaud you and already followed the new channel. I look forward to more great content!
Embracing the youtube thumbnail requirements I see!
Yes, for once I have.
