Great video!!! Ive been shooping for a p90 guitar and had kinda was on the fence about these two...love your playing and that you give eachbguitar some clean play..too many review vids just do dirt or crunch and you cant really hear the pickup sound...you pretty much sold me on the yamaha..i lile the features and like the pickups better
I like the Epiphone P90 Pro pickups. Great for guitar builders like me, because lots of people just swap them out (and realise they didn't need to!) I think you are correct - they are all wound the same - mine have identical DC resistance measurements. Because they are the same, they are not hum cancelling in the middle position. I think this contributes to the middle sound. Bare Knucke wind their pickups like this as standard - if you want hum cancelling in the middle, its a special order. I do like the Yamaha pickups too - lovely guitar - I managed to get to see Cardinal Black (Chris Buck) a few weeks ago - used his Revstar for most of the gig.
Comparing two P90s is like comparing two very similar apples lol. They both sounded great and the P90 is one of my favourite pickup types. I have them in my Duesenberg and Gordon Smith guitars.
It's the capacitors in the Epiphone that affect the tone; they are low quality. In my Epi 59, if you touch the capacitor, the hum of the P90's increases. Same in the 55 but not as loud. You can buy a set of capacitors for between 10 and 30 dollars. Gibson could spend about 2 dollars more per guitar for a much better sound.
Great review of both guitars that sound awesome.I kinda favor the Epiphone and I'm looking to purchase one but I don't know if I want a new guitar or a new amp. Can't afford both. Thanks for the video.
This is one of the reasons I love the Quad Cortex - I don't burn money on new amps anymore (well, maybe a little for captures). That leaves more $ for guitars! 😁
I like this review! Really cool. They seem really cool for playing Classic Rock, which I play. AC/DC, 38 Special, Beatles, Green Day, that kind of stuff. Which do you think sound "better" for playing that kind of music. Most of the time I'm always on the bridge pickup. Have you ever tried the Sire Larry Carlton L7V? This has P90s on it. Thank you for posting this. I plan on getting one of these P90 guitars
I have not tried the Sire with p90s but would like to. Of these two, I think either would work great, but I think the Epiphone has a more classic sound.
Sure, I'll try to put it up later today. It's really just a simplified version of this preset: neuraldsp.com/cloud/p/a02a834e-e1ff-4575-b641-fcc0fcba9dde
@ oh man! Thank you!, i have to give it a try… sounds like a solid base sound. A really good one. I own a SE DGT, so I believe that preset will fit very good with the coil split.
The Rev’s neck is wayyy too narrow and thin. Tried the Rev and had high hopes but wasn’t for me. I do dig Epi LPs and am considering this one as I’d like to add a p90 to my collection.

I got a Sire L7V (Les Paul) with P90s. Fkn awesome; stellar price
Revstar needs to make a chunky “59” profile neck and I’d be sold
Agree

They do sound pretty similar, I admit. More so in the recording than in the room.
@ If you lived near Ottawa, I could lend you some guitars too.
@@tonepilot In outside Philly. I did go to secondary school in Ontario (Mississauga) but haven't lived on your side of the border since then.

@@davlavmusic7070 Ok, thank you. The Sire P90 pickups are Ceramic Pickups, not Alnico 5. I like the Alnicos better, just a preference.
I love my JB 55 Epi LP though, would never sell. Favorite guitar
I’d love to try one someday.
Could you share your preset, please?

Revstar for the win assuming this is the Standard model which is less expensive than the Epiphone.
Buy a used Gibson Les Paul Tribute with P-90’s.
Chambered so it’s light. Thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish.
Go for around $900.
Thank me later.
