  • Imagine if your cute, cuddly puppy suddenly turned aggressive on you. You might think your puppy is trying to dominate you or acting out to spite you, but that is not the case. We’re looking at what is going on with aggression in puppies and what to do about resource guarding. As scary and unimaginable as it may seem, a puppy showing aggression over resources is normal, and there are things that you can do right now to help.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • How resource guarding is a survival mechanism for puppies and dogs.
    • What to notice about the early signs of resource guarding.
    • How humans can make resource guarding worse.
    • When and why to see a Veterinary Behaviorist.
    • What to do when a dog guards against you or another person.
    • Why to consider your dog’s emotional response and feelings of fear.
    • How we can have feelings that lead us to want to guard our resources too!
    • Why to look at things from your puppy’s point of view.
    • How to create a great Conditioned Emotional Response (CER) for your pup or dog.
    • The reason punishment only suppresses behavior and does not change behavior.
    • Why not to take your pup’s bowl away or put your hands in the food.
    • How to keep everyone safe and create a relationship of trust with your dog.
    • The common ways your puppy will show you they are not comfortable.
    • All the steps to prevent and fix puppy aggression.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in these videos. My 10-week-old Weim is in the throes of puppy biting and not seeing a lot of success in what I have tried so far. She thinks she is playing and it isn't aggressive, but it definitely can hurt with those razor-sharp puppy teeth (and tear clothes). I need to teach her that she can have more fun doing something less painful to the family!

I think it starts with a puppy picking up everything it finds, and there's a worry it'll choke or swallow it. You panic and can end up removing things from its mouth all the time and this probably starts a resource guarding reaction, especially if you have to keep forcing open its jaws to retrieve the pebble or the elastic band or the plastic bag. It's not swapping that "find" for any treat and you have to act fast. In fact it can easily become a great game for a pup to get your attention. In the end you're chasing it around to check what it's chewing NOW and getting angry, Then Puppy gets angry too...growl growl

I LOVE this podcast! I used to rescue dogs with various depths of resource guarding, and back then it was a steep learning curve for me. 😳🤣 Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge so people understand it's root cause. I wanted to add that your Bring Me program is a perfect beginning for my now 1 yr old Cane Corso since my hope for her is to become my service dog. The other day I dropped a can of Rotel tomatoes and before I could get it, she picked it up off the floor, got SUPER wiggly and proud, then offered it to me before I could even request it /trade. 🥰
So I've practiced with her, and it occasionally becomes a game of "keep away" if my game is off, but she's learning SO much thanks to HSTD & Recallers, and your extensive free content.
    THANK YOU💜

Susan, this is great information and was very eye opening to changes my family and I need to make to help our puppy, Weston. I listened to this podcast, then watched it again on TH-cam with my husband, and will be watching it again with my children so we all learn how to help Weston. You are truly amazing! Your knowledge and understanding of dogs and how you relate them to human feelings and thoughts makes learning with my dog more enjoyable, for both of us. Thank you for taking the time to address my problem, and doing it so quickly and thoroughly. I am confident these tips will do the trick, just like all your games in Home School the Dog have. You should call it “Home school the dog and human”. LOL Weston and I will forever be great full to you. Thanks, Tammie

Thank you so much for providing this fantastic information! I work at an animal shelter and often refer adopters to your programs and podcasts for accurate, helpful and reliable information. I will definitely share this podcast specifically since resource guarding is a common behavior issue we see in shelter dogs. My only question is how to build a CER if you don’t have something the dog sees as higher value than the item they have possession of? Many dogs (like my own) have dietary restrictions that limit the options for high value treats we can offer them. So while I can work on building a CER with lower value items in controlled environments, we struggle with items picked up on a walk or in the yard (like a dead bird). Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

You made me see WE WERE THE CAUSE! He got to a point tonight where he was in attack mode....in my face! His favorite past time is to crawl under my lounge chair pull fluff out of it and it was a chase to catch him and take it......Just now I took your advice he just had a piece of fluff and I thought DONT REACT! I grabbed a bone .....they are tiny bones the size of the tip of my pinky finger.....I snapped it in half and offered him a bone as the fluff was hanging out of his mouth....he came toward me and we swapped! Hi Susan, thank you for all that you do! I wish I'd been introduced to you years ago! I made a dream come true last February and brought home a Yorkie (12 weeks at the time); he will be a year old mid-November. My home also has a GSD and cats. My puppy (who is smaller than the cats lol) has made friends with all of them and they all get along great - but recently, he started resource guarding ME! If we are sitting on the couch watching TV (or in bed) and a cat tries to come up, he will growl and charge at it. Same thing if my GSD comes near the couch/bed. Removing the trigger in this case is nearly impossible - unless I just don't allow him on the couch?

    Input: 10week Rottie pup
I received pup way too young at 6wks, but here we are. First day I picked him up he was very nippy. His nipping has turned into biting. At 6wks resource guarding is it’s food. This dogs nips have turned into biting. He cannot be petted because he bites my teen child and me. He can only be pet when very tired. I have strictly been training him, potty schedule, crate training, feeding from hand (recommended by trainer to curb food guarding), obedience training. I have consulted with 3 trainers and 2breeders (both exp 20yrs) and they shared same concern that this bx can be dangerous as children are in home.
Pup was runt of litter 11pups. Considering returning to breeder, as I am in need of a Rottie with less aggressive temperament (yes they exist!!! And yes I understand the characters of the breed). I feel a bit unsure moving forward. I appreciate you reading !!

Brilliant episode! Thank you for sharing this info with us! I have two questions: What bones do your dogs get that are safe for chewing? Also, what about taking things away from your dog that aren't safe for them? When we're on the farm the other dogs get bones (I don't allow this as I've seen too many emergencies and deaths related to bones at the vet clinic) but my dogs do sometimes find the leftover bones and then I take it from them. Is it correct to just give them high value treats when removing the object?

I do have a question- my 5 month old puppy (cattle dog) is suddenly scared of everything. Started with loud trucks (UPS/FedEx) and now cars. I try to walk her in places where there isn’t a lot of other dogs because she seems suddenly sure of those too.
How do I physically exercise her without forcing her to be around things that she’s scared of.
Unfortunately, we live on a busy road so the yard is scary for her now too. Any suggestions?

My springer is a resource guarder, he did it as a puppy against me from the start when I got him. Now he does it against his sister that I got a year after him as well as me. Frustrating, because it came out of no where and it's over totally random things! I believe in positive reinforcement not punishment and in terrified he's going to snap at my niece or my nephew.

If a dog is a resource guarder, will they always be a resource guarder? I mean even with training, if you give them something new that they love, do you need to continue to train it out? My puppy, 6 months, guards his food, even when he doesn’t want to eat it. Unless I hand feed him, usually on a spoon, raw food, he can get bored or full and not want the rest, then he can guard it.
    Thoughts?

I have a 4 month old Boston terrier pit mix that has started showing scary signs of aggression. I thought it was resource guarding, but now I’m not so sure. He seems to attack for no reason, and leaves us with bruises and puncture wounds. Tonight he latched into my finger and tried to shake my hand like a toy. How do you suggest to handle actual aggression?

  • @Sharpeoutdoors
    @Sharpeoutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dogs are pack predators and constantly battle for dominance.
Now I’m not sure what kind of dogs 🐩 you deal with but I deal with packs of catahoula leopard hounds that catch 300 pound hogs.
They always challenge my commands and are aggressive towards me in there 1st year .... but as they get older I can have one of my children take food out of there mouth and they won’t show any signs of aggression.
When a dog gets aggressive with me I grab it by the side of the collar so I have control and hold him/her in place firmly until it calms or gets the message.
You are in charge of your dog and the dog will challenge you over and over again. Take charge.

My dog will do this if it’s something he can’t have. He also has an aggressive biting tantrum if we try to get him to sit (or any command he doesn’t want to do in that moment) for treats/toys. It’s getting frustrating bc all we’re doing now is outside/park time and then we come home and he’s biting and angry. I want to spend time with him but playtime usually ends with me covered in bites and him in the crate. We keep a leash on him so we can keep him off us when he starts biting and then he really goes berserk and it escalates. I’m so tired 😩

Sometimes they just have energy they need to get out. Throwing a ball with them in the backyard or taking for a walk. My kids, my daughter especially, has created a terrible pattern of getting mad at the dog for taking her toys and now the puppy is agressive and bit me today. So irritated. So not only do you have do we have to be educated, but also we have to educate our kids.

My dog is a year and 4 months. We got him about 4 months ago. He has had a number of episodes of intense resource guarding where he lunges and bites, but it is not with things that he has all the time. He does not resource guard his meal time food, toys, space, ect. He only does it when he gets something he has taken from the trash or the counters. It is always food or food trash. Would this exercise work for him even though he does not react negatively to me touching his bones or treats? My dad thinks he is too old to train. Is that true? We do not have the money to go to a trainer. Our dog was given to us because the previous owners couldn't have him in their apartment. Any help you could give would be amazing! My dad is ready to give him to the pound if I don't get this under control.

Do you have tips if my dog resource guards me ( maybe my treat pouch and/or toys on my person) on walks when dogs run up to me (and often jump up on me) in off leash areas?

I would love some advice on this also - resource guarding me when out and about with other dogs and they come up to me. I too also have my treat pouch on for training my 10mth BC.

What if he is aggressive towards me and my sister and no matter what we’ve tried for 3 weeks he won’t stop attacking us when we fall asleep or when we are awake not always he’s good at training and listens to sit and give paw and wait but when we are asleep he won’t stop he made my nose bleed and bites extremely hard

What if my 3mo Samoyed puppy loses his mind and becomes aggressive towards me when I’m leaving his pen and when we’re on walks (when a car drives by, shortly after he 💩, and when he realizes we’re on the last stretch home… well, and the exact halfway point). He even gets aggressive after like 2 min of playing. My wrists and ankles are so bruised and scratched I’m afraid someone will think I’m being mistreated 😬
Outside of that he’s an absolute love bug. Like he can’t possibly get close enough to me lol

My puppy is 2 months old. He likes to nip my feet, toes, socks, jeans,.. everytime I try to stop him by picking him up (redirecting with toys doesn’t work all the time so I have to pick him up bcs it hurts.)
He gets so mad when I do that!! He growls, bites to hurt me. Does he guard my feet? I cannot be a toy 🥺😬

@@milenapniewska6158 he's 4.5 months, we've had him 1.5 months, he still gets super angry if we try to correct his behaviour by either telling him no, holding him back (from jumping on people) or if we ignore him. 🤷‍♀ the frequency is maybe reducing slowly, but the power behind the bites gets stronger as he gets older!

I cannot tell if my puppy is resource guarding me or when he’s in his bed it started out as when we were napping in my bed when my kids would come in he would growl and bark now he sleeps on his bed in the crate and he has been fine except for today he did it again when they come in… I also noticed when my kids are on me he will put his paw on me. So it might be me. He’s been good with them other than this. Please help me!!!

Hi @jessicajarsak7812 remote consults and working with your local vet if needed for testes etc can be a great option.

Hi Kate, for aggression issues, Susan recommends consulting with a qualified behaviourist. A qualified behavioural professional will be able to help with a protocol designed specifically for you and your dog and will be with you every step of the way for support. Ask for references and then work through your challenge with this qualified professional. Having said that, Susan's training is absolutely doable to deal with day-to-day training as it's more about understanding your dog and building a relationship with them through game based reinforcement. One does not exclude the other.

My 3 months husky is attacking and biting me and the bites are harming my skin! What’s the problem and what should i do? I tried all type of ways like directing the puppy to chew on one of the toys or distracting it other ways. The attack won’t just stop.☹️

    • @DogsThat

Hi @KelleyJo Lancaster, many behaviorists are able to do distance consults and work in conjunction with your local Vet, so it might not be a barrier in your research. It's wonderful you want to help your dog.

I've got a young puppy (12 weeks old), very eager to go outside. We practice some IYC, some duration in sit, some hot zones. But staying calm near the doors is rather impossible for now ;) Crazy little sheltie. This video made me think: would dropping some treats on the floor help? To change her state of mind before she gets too excited? And then ask to sit when I put the leed on?
Or maybe you could elaborate some time on teaching manners while going out together?
