I really liked this, because of the comparative nature. Would love to see more videos like this! I would really like to recommend that that whistling/radar sound at the beginning of the review videos be removed--it's so annoying!!
If, like me you are looking at this years later. You can get wooden trains to replace the tokens from Mayfair. They are also included with the Steam Barrons expansion (which really isn't an expansion more of a new game using the same pieces).
Imagine Steam but where you can only take stock out at the start of the turn, so you have to plan farther ahead and can be blocked. Since you have to pay for your stocks and train level every turn you can get burned hard if your plan falls flat and you are left holding money. Breaking even is a good goal early, and harder than you think. Now add a smaller board with less room to maneuver and an extra fee for building over another track. Now add a dice table to restock cities. That's the basics
Played Age of Steam for the first time today. I loved it. My five friends were on the fence on it and had difficulty getting to focus to play it. They were also varying degrees of stoned, I was not. Anyway, Age of Steam requires you to think and because of that I bought it. I think after a couple play throughs a group can have a lot of fun with it once they start to see the metas of strategy but until then, yeah, there's a lot of analysis to do on the mechanics. For a guy like me, that means it's interesting, it's rich with depth, and I has a lot of lasting playability.
Thanks, I was looking for a comparison of these games, the only train game i have is iron dragon and its fantasy based, which some people dont care for. so thanks!
I believe their licence to use the name ran out. Railways of the World is basically the same game and the expansions for Railways of the World work with Railroad Tycoon. Railways of the world comes with an extra Mexico map which was not included in Railroad Tycoon and as far as I am aware this is not available seperately.
I just played "Age of Steam' for the 3rd time and just a few days ago. To me it does not seem that hard to play or learn. I think everything is hard to play when you first learn it. I played a 4 player game and it was fun. Even if we had a few Sharks playing the game kept it fun for me.
EDIT: Ok, it sounds like "octions". So he means "actions"? I didn't no that you can also pronounce it this way... However, I'm still wondering what he means with that...
good review you got it dead right because I play railroad tycoon 3 and sid myers railroads and I want that experience in a board game insted of being on the cpu
Age of Steam seems to be something for chess players... Chess is the most unforgiving game I know (except if you play against a dummkopf). But I don't know Age of Steam, so maybe I will change my mind in future... However, could anyone please explain me what Tom means with "options" in a game? How can a game has no options?
With all the content creators on TH-cam now… Can’t believe the video that compares to three games is 12 years old… But Tom did a good job.
How does this gem of a video only have 33 comments?
oh lord 240p. wish we could get these old videos remastered :)

Fantastic review Tom! We really got an insight into what you think makes a game fun and what doesn't.
wonder if the dicetower will look into the 18xx series

Ups, I spelled the word wrong, my mistake. What I meant was - "auctions".
You say steam board looks hideous but duel of age is one of your favorites?
Seems like Age of Steam is the Agricola to the other two games’ Caverna.

Brass Birmingham or Railways of the World? Anyone? I don't think I want two heavy train games...but I do want one : )
You're dead on, Tom! AoS is my favorite of the three and I am no fun to play with!
Oh snap! A much salter Tom when he was younger! You go Tom! Tell em how you feel ; )

No, i'm still lost. I think i'll by Ticket to Ride instead :))) It still has trains in it :)))
When I'm in the mood for a train game, I reach for RotW.

"Auctions"
thats why i have a copy of steam...
Steam: Rails to Riches app is on Greenlight. Vote to support at steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=796870875
Love your reviews Tom, but these train reviews own because of the wraywlwayws of the wrowrlwd
Lolol that board was ginormous
Did you mean "actions"?
I've only played Steam. I found it to be heavy and cut throat (not in a bad way). AoS must be really heavy.
This is unrealistically cool!

I love Railways of the World! Choo! Choo!
@ Templarkun:
No, I mean options.
Listen from 7:49 on...
@ agenteasy:
Thank you =D =D =D
So the debate was about immigration?
AOS Steam for me... I like to "think" when I play... LOL
чо то не совсем разборчиво ты горланишь
Yet: Age of steam for me. The original for me. Steam is just a weaker duplicate.
