Hawkins will fix their chargers, though yes buying a new one is probably cheaper, though it will not last as long as the old one. I have used those, they are fine with most batteries, though I also have 2 old battery chargers, youngest of which was made in the 1950's. Those will try any battery, no matter how flat, but the modern ones will try, then tell you to replace the failed battery.
The battery will normally generate a small amount of hydrogen and oxygen gas when it is approaching full charge, which is explosive, so a spark will detonate the battery, which on large ones can be very bad, as it will splash sulfuric acid all over. modern batteries there is not as much water, and that is normally held in the AGM or as a gel, so not as likely to go all over. The intelligent charger is needed because if you gas off the water, and the battery does not have a recombination method ( a catalytic converter built into the cell vent, to react the gases back to water, and drip them back into the cell) then a dumb charger will destroy the battery by removing all the water from it.

I bought this type of charger a few months back because I had drained my battery, I charged the battery it worked fine, but it kept on being drained, so I don't know if the was dead or the charger had something to do with it. Now the battery can't hold any charge at all.

@@nhlanhlamagagula3519 Battery has internal shorts, most likely due to flaked off cell material filling the sump of the battery. Try shaking it gently to redistribute the material, but it likely will fail soon again, as the powder tends to make multiple conductive paths. Had this occur with lots of gate batteries, they drop 2V or multiples when left alone after a 12 hour charge to 14V4, telling you that each 2V drop is a cell with internal shorts. you can also feel the warm cells when charging at 2A or so, they run a lot warmer than the others.

@SeanBZA thanks Sean. I'll try shaking it and see.

It does sound like that battery is cooked and needs to be replaced, any idea how long you have had the battery. If it is 4/5 years then replace it.

@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 I think even a Pole will have issues with that..... they can have names that look more like an eye test chart, along with the Hungarians and Czechs, though they also have an advantage of a bigger alphabet

Not idiot proof!!! Connect to the battery before plugging into the mains socket!!! RTFM!!!

Thanks for your input, a better explanation will help me understand your statement better.
