- This Emmy-award winning documentary chronicles the journey of a mustang named Charlie and the people whose lives he touches along the way. Produced and written by Jen Noble. Distributed nationally on PBS, a WTCI-TV Production, Chattanooga, TN.
As a kid I found a injured Appaloosa mustang in a rose field. Later on she became my childhood horse named Rosa. For the field and her chestnut color. She taught me a lot of things about myself, but the biggest thing she taught me was to never give up on anything. Rosa died about five month after I was 14. She was the best horse a kid like me could've asked for.
I absolutely Love to just go out into the desert and watching these beautiful, majestic creatures!
I have been here where these people are loving and gentleing these magnificent horses, and its a blessing to be apart of thier lives,and an honor to be accepted by them.
THESE PEOPLE ARE SOME OF THE FEW WHO UNDERSTOOD WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT and live accordingly respecting the essence of the Earth.Hats off to you, it would have been great to be one of you. American spirit is also made of this,pity that is mostly forgotten.

Now on my journey to find my Mustang a dream that started as a little girl that will in the very near future become a reality.

10:19! That buckskin! That's Mesteno! You can't mistake that mane and broken tail! he died in 2010. I am so thrilled to see he's been caught on film and not just on photos!
He was a very spectacular horse, I'm sorry he's no longer with us. Do you know if he was able to pass on his genes? I don't own horses so bear with me lol he looked different than the others, he looked like a mixed breed - I know his breed is mustang, but is there a way of figuring out what his history was? All horses are beautiful in my eyes but he was the epitome of a stunning stallion for me. I'm just wondering whether his looks are characteristic to any specific breed of horse. Hopefully this post makes enough sense.
There is a push to geld Mustangs, often without checking their DNA! There are Advocates who feel that more recent testing might show interesting and rare strains that might need protection. Others feel there are "too many " Mustangs to begin with and insist that the majority of the horses are simply escaped or loosed Ranch horses. Personally I feel the answer is a bit of both. Its arrogant to insist that all wild horses are Ranch stock. However there are groups who are especially interested in the Spanish Heritage horse. Some of these groups geld them while others feel the DNA of these horses should be protected and their lineage continued.
You are so right!! And to think she called him Piggy, what a disgrace! Apparently she doesn't know the Mustangs as well as she claims after following them for 4 years. I recognized him right away! It is so wonderful to see a video of him after seeing so many still photos of him! What a thrill!!

This was fantastic to watch, normally I watch a documentary once but this one I'm saving to watch again and again lol I was almost crying when I saw those girls showing their horses and trying not to cry and it made my day to see the one girl just hanging off her horse crying because a gentlemen bought her horse for her. How heart wrenching and heart warming, I loved this. I've always wanted a horse, life circumstances have yet to allow it but to see those girls train their horses with such a bond is very moving. This was a very inspiring documentary for me, I absolutely loved it. Thank you so much for uploading this!!

It’s been many years since then but our love and feelings are much deeper for the Horse!
These are the most healthy and strong of all Horses. You feel them you’re apart of the land more. I really can’t describe the magnificent sod this breed!

I am a Canadian horse addict lol been fascinated since I was born thanks to my Father r.i.p Gary Heino,and my mother’s mom ol Nanna r.i.p Bertha Matthews. They had a passion that was in stowed in me I had a very rough life growing up with being lost into the foster system after a divorce and many abused situations,animals and mainly horses have kept me grounded and been my source of relief from life’s nasty endeavours. I have learned sooooo much from and threw horses and I hope to one day help others with a coloured heartbreaking start in life threw horses and other animals that too have been put threw trauma and hard times bringing COMPASSION BACK and unity threw a family type ranch atmosphere where everyone contributes by taking care of each other threw every day chores and tasks but where the youth can always call home and be treated and greeted with ❤️ and arms wide open! It’s still just a fluffy cloud in my mind I’m trying to obtain land threw my family native band in b.c And get things rolling I am doing it alone no support and no guidance so if anyone who reads this has helpful tips ( constructive Criticism ) it’s appreciated Greatly, I have had a GOOD run of BAD luck I’m struggling to keep my five horses and myself a home and fed after loosing a lot threw separation and theft I keep my faith and chin up my horses and pride are wickedly strong and helpful healers

Reminds me of the movie, The Horse Whisperer. There is a homestead in North Carolina, not far from where I reside, that Rehabilitates humans that have suffered from Trauma, such as PTSD. This film is so beautifully done. Such a Divine Inspiration to see this again. Thank you 'Jen for sharing this documentary. I so love horses and all animals too. What a Blessing and a Miracle to see and to hear these success stories for human and animal. Wonderful! :)

I remember the time when I had to give up my girl she was so sweet and energetic I couldn't keep up my parent's said that if you can't give what is needed then you have to give to someone who can I my eyes felt like they were gonna let a new waterfall run. after that the day had come were I said goodbye to lady,broke my heart like shattered glass
I work at therapeutic riding center in North Carolina and I think it's great that their training these beautiful horses to be therapeutic riding horses because it takes a lot of work and dedication to teach any horse that a lot of the horses I lead around for the riders can sometimes be really reactive and I think it's great that they're taking troubled kids in to help so it's even better I really like that

These Wild horses don't seem to be 'WILD' but thet seem like people; kinf=d and gentle, affectionate with each other and producing new Colts from time ti time. I really enjoy watching Wild Mustangs now. I will be back to finish watching, Good night all 'Horse-Lovers, : )

well this is relatable for my grandmas horses so my grandma loved horses like me but she never actually got one, one day her neighbor got a horse she was a wild mustang and just got brought in they checked her if she was pregnant they messed up and made a mistake she was pregnant and got sold when she was supposed to go back to the wild, but she didnt, well my grandmas neighbor found out she was and she didnt want to keep her anymore so my grandma stepped in and took her now my grandma is living on 30 acres with her mare and her foal now her foal is grown up of course but now i got up there and get to ride them, ok beyee

The term "wild horse" is also used colloquially to refer to free-roaming herds of feral horsessuch as the mustang in the United States, thebrumby in Australia, and many others. These feral horses are untamed members of the domestic horse subspecies (Equus ferus caballus), and should not be confused with the two truly "wild" horse subspecies extant into modern times.
Horses that live in an untamed state but have ancestors that have been domesticated are not truly "wild" horses; they are feral horses. For example, when the Spanish reintroduced the horse to the Americas beginning in the late 15th century, some horses escaped and formed feral herds, the best-known being the mustang.

While I admire the intentions of these people, it makes me sad, as I have seen these horses in the wild country of Utah. Not sure about removing them to find them a good "home". They belong in open country running wild as a mustang.
If the mustangs go to good homes, better than being in the wild.....they dont have to walk for miles and miles for water, or scrounge for non-existent food in the winter, and they dont have to worry about becoming coyote dinner (or wolve, or mountain lion)....we have multiple mustangs, and a few have got out of their corrals....they dont run for freedom, the walk to the barn and get into their stall (their safe place)...

Charlie is alive and well and lives in a loving home in Alabama.
It's really more about making money more than the health and welfare of wild horse.
The older documentary on Australia's wild horses is far worse, it's too terrible.
Even though just about everything in the world comes down to the almighty dollar, I truly think there are a lot of good people that have dedicated their lives to help these horses. Money is the only reason I myself don't have one.It's yet another thing to add to my bucket list.

I wish I had seen this a few months ago. I live in NM as well, and I had a friend with a rescue needing to rehome her animals. :( Did you ever find one? There are some rescues locally, some can be found on Facebook and I know of a few rescues in surrounding states as well.

What makes you think they need you to love them ?? They had a family before they got hearded and taken from the free lands !! People suck !!
The mustangs are not native and are struggling in the wild. It isn't a down grade for one to become tamed. If you spoke to people from the areas where the mustangs live they'll inform of the real situation going on there. I don't mean ask someone online or look it up on online. I mean actually going there and speaking to people and observing the horses in the wild.
You obviously live in a city and never get exposed to the actual wild.
Ranchers need the land to feed cattle not enough room for both some get rounded up and put in holding pens some get sent to slaughter

If you want to save them leave them alone. The horses will survive without your intervention. After all it is the government that is killing them to save them? How does that work? It does not.

Everything that is free is taken away. These horses eat what cattle don't, that's how they have survived. Its a world wide scam regarding anything that roams free, an excuse is always found. Most of these beautiful creatures end up in soap factories and they know it.
People do you seriously think they can just let thousands of mustangs to breed every year? There would be 10 times the amount in a few years. There is not enough water and grassland for them all. For those who live out west know. Water is a scarce commodity. People let their emotions get mixed with reality. We have other means of transportation. In the 1800's they could have those kind of numbers. Now there would be horses walking around dying of thirst and hunger. Nice PETA.
He hasn't exactly "died and gone to heaven" unless heaven is losing the only home and freedom you've ever known and relegated to a corral and harness. It's better than the glue factory, but let's be honest. We owe wild animals far more than we ever give them, while we're patting ourselves on the back. It's the same old imperialist trope. smh
unfortunately resources like water get threatened when the mustangs are allowed to breed without restriction, and they would eventually die from lack of habitat so the mustang adoption began. The other alternative is to shoot them for horse meat as they do in Europe for both wild and domestic horses.
but horses do overgraze because they're not seasonal grazers- they're out there all year round, never allowing the grass to thrive again during it's season.

Yes and no, it's unfortunate that they can't remain wild and free. But it's also unfortunate when the habitat cannot support populations, when that happens animals starve and suffer, they are more susceptible to illnesses and diseases and parasites, competition for survival increases as it is no longer just between an animal and the environment but the animal and the environment AND other animals.You have to have a balance between a healthy environment and a healthy population. If one outweighs the other it can topple the whole system. These wild horses have no natural predators, the only thing apart from us keeping their populations healthy is the environment and when that cant support them it turns on them, it isn't pretty.
But I do agree, it is unfortunate that we can't leave them free. It's our own fault, our expansion and needs, our government, it's sad. Hopefully public interest will jump in and help maintain what wild populations exist now.

If you're going to look at this situation fairly, then you need to ask more questions about why "the habitat cannot support [the] population" instead of just accepting that as though the cattle on all those acres and acres of habitat didn't exist. When ranchers run out of water or grazing land for their ever expanding cash crop, they lease land from the same blm that manages these wild horses. So called public lands. Do you see a conflict of interest there? Meanwhile these ranchers who tend to be on the far right of the political spectrum and who tend to rail against the federal government, taxes and regulation, receive subsidies from that same government, so they can keep pumping out those porterhouses. But send more money to the public schools? That's what's called 'bleeding us dry'. We've romanticized ranchers and farmers to the point that it's sacrilege to question whether their unrestricted sovereignty is in the best interest of the rest of us here in the west and across the country. This documentary is just another propaganda piece for the idea that money for a few comes before the natural world and it's people.
I dont think people should be training wild mustanges. they are called wild mustanges because they are wild and they should be left in the wild peacefully not taken from their home land to be used for riding or anything else. same with any other animal.
They are controlling the population. They would take them to slaughter if not for this.
think about it if you were a horse and got captured forever and never had your freedom. sure I have horses but they are wild horses

The oldest horse fossils have been found in the Americas.
Horses today are all descended from ancient horses who crossed an ancient Asian/American land bridges during the Ice Ages.
So technically horses are not feral....but a species reintroduction.
Plus "papered" horses tend to be pretty dumb, slightly inbred, and plagued with hoof and leg problems.
Mustangs are natures horses. Yes, they take longer to "tame", but they are tougher and instinctually are more loyal.
Plus talking to farriers, they have harder hooves and less problems then "pure breds".
Plus, your not a horse person until you have been kicked and/or bucked off at least once.
Mustangs don't need humans. Humans need mustangs.
The day the last mustang is removed from the range......is the day humanity losses the wild west....forever.

I enjoyed this documentary and seeing how the work with the horses touched the lives of people who would not have ordinarily come in contact with such wonderful creatures and in turn realised what wonderful creatures they were; the only downside for me was the awful rhyme (doggerel) which was presented as 'poetry'.................... It's a pity that this was included as it detracted from the authenticity of the piece, for me.

The mustangs are not a native species. They are vermin species introduced by Europeans. What the bleeding hearts don't tell you is that horse have a close cropping way of grazing. Whereas the native buffalo's style of grazing suits the growth buds of prairie grass.
The bleeding hearts try to tell you that the desertification of the Prairie is caused by equine. Nothing could be further from the truth. Its actually caused by equine grazing. The situation on the western plains is exactly analogous to rabbits in Australia. In Australia they introduced a horrible disease. This disease killed the rabbits in abject discomfort and probably pain.
The answer is to gradually replace the horse with buffalo.
The disingenuous attitudes displayed by the bleeding hearts is astounding.
The horses would by a valuable source of protein for the dog food. To humanly slaughter them just, as you would domestic cattle would be quite ethical - if it wasn't for the rampant anthropomorphism involved.
There are enough domestic horses that are abused without adding to the problem.
I should have said that bovine grazing does everything other than destroy the prairie grasses.
