Jon Brion Talks about Elliott Smith

  • “I said there’s a way we can do something & we should experiment,” Anderson told the PTA fansite, Cigarettes & Redvines. “So, we just basically shot tests for about three episodes. I paid for it myself & we just did it…. I rented it, got a few cameras & threw up a couple of lights. No big deal. I had Fiona sing. I had Jon sing. Elliott Smith came by. Bette Midler happened to be recording at the studio next door & was like ‘I want to sing!’ It was insane! Next thing I know, Bette Midler is doing ‘50's cover tunes.”
What happened to those other performances is still a mystery. Anderson does not appear to have submitted the Smith episode to any channel or production company for consideration. Watching the performance again (for my fourth time, actually), that was most likely the right choice. This wasn’t the beginning of something new. This was the end of something that I am sure was frustrating and painful for Brion. Maybe he didn’t know it was the end, but it was. Fortunately, and fittingly, it is a moment he chose to share with two artists who know how to coax beauty out of gloom.

What I love about Elliott is that just when you think you’ve heard his best material you discover a lesser known song that blows you away, see you later is one of those songs.

When he first wrote the song, someone in Heatmiser told Elliott that "See You Later" would buy him a house. It might have been either Neil Gust or Sam Coomes, I don't remember. One of my favorites though.

So true. First time I heard Stickman, I was blown away. How can a song that good just be floating around? Didn't even make New Moon. One of my all time favorite songs by anybody.

See You Later wasn't written later, in fact it was written before he started his solo career.

Jon Brion is such a lucky man to have known all these great people. So many talented people who are gone, he's done so much as well. That shit is crazy.

thats funny. I do wish his live acoustic sound was better, he always used one of those soundhole pickups, and his guitar wasn't set up specifically for these open tunings

Never thought I would get sober... But I have been since 2016 I [I'm on Subutux Maitencence ]... So when I was 29 which puts me in a really low risk... I got artificially inseminated and although 80% of the time the mother carries the gene for down syndrome he got it from his donor...
I named my son Elliott, of course.
[Our last name Schwab- ... Actually makes it sound so similar his name is Elliott schwab. My little man turns 2...on this Saturday!
He Likes most of the music I listen to especially in the rap like atmosphere but he enjoys Elliott Smith and another way.
[& if I ask Alexa to play Elliott Smith he gets so confused]
I didn't learn until a few years after being sober that I also use drugs because I have a very very disfunctional family and my mom has an PD so I didn't realize that Elliott Smith smith so much to me simply because we had a lot in common... I really loved naming him this nest and I can't wait to show him all the commemoration I have for the man named him after later on.
The fact that my son has down syndrome it only makes it more beautiful because it's pretty much impossible to have such a possibility like down syndrome and not be a empathetic kindred soul, as was Elliott "Stephen" Smith!
Happy birthday [Little baby] Elliott , and love u always big Elliott!
