Some knives become part of you after using them for a while. It makes it hard to buy anything else. You get use to feeling them in your pocket. The longer you carry one the more comfortable they become. The green one isn’t going to like to being left behind. I do like the look of your new one; the engraving is very nice. I don’t think you need to worry much that it doesn’t come apart. It is a good idea to buy extra ones. It seems doing that; somehow prevents losing the one you bought first from ever getting lost. About the same time you bought your Spyderco; I bought an A.G. Russell K-93 and still carry it. However: have 3 more as spares. I once left my knife stuck in a stump Grouse Hunting in a deep and steep mountain valley in West Virginia. I drove back 102 miles and spent about half a day to find it a week later. I spent more money to find it than if I would have bought another one. It was the point that matter to me. I was a happy camper seeing it stuck in that stump where I ate my lunch a week before. My Bird dog Sam was happy too; so we celebrated by eating lunch on that stump again.🙂🍻
That's a good story. I can relate because it sounds just like what I would do. Cheaper to replace yet it's the principle. I hate losing things. Seeing your knife still sticking up from that stump was really satisfying I'm sure. Stay sharp.
I've been carrying a Delica 4 and I like it but the dragonfly might go on my Christmas list (for myself). One thing I've found out, as I get older and hopefully wiser my knives are getting smaller.
This was one of your first videos that caught my eye. I waited a long time and just got one of these a couple days ago when a discount coupon showed up. I think it's a beautiful knife. Thanks for your content.
Why not a guilty pleasure like that one? The etching on the handle is really beautyfull. Congratulations on jumping the gun on this one. It's a wonderfull piece of pocket jewelry that is as effective as a tool. Thank you for showing Tobias.
Nice scales. I too tend to edc small knives. The QSP Penguin or the Rat 2. They are identical in length. 3 finger grip, 4 if I choke up on the blade. All the best.
I'm not a Spyderco fan due to cost and looks ( plasticky :) but I have not handled any ) , but that new Dragonfly is very nice, Tobias! I understand the guilty pleasures part. So far I have not found any knife line I'd go bonkers for, but who knows! Kitty's showing her claws, huh? That intro woke me up a bit, hehe.
That is one fine coin. I used to be exclusively a modern folder guy, but I have seen the light. Still like the modern folders I own, but since I have limited funds, only buying traditional folders. Wonderful video.
I get that you love Spyderco Knives and the etching on the Dragonfly Tattoo is especially good but unfortunately they don’t do it for me. We all love different style knives and that’s what makes our own individual collections so special. Great show and tell brother 👍.
Yep. I know where you’re coming from. I have no use for Benchmade and or the Standard Trapper knife. I can appreciate their popularity but they just aren’t for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for dropping by. Really enjoy your channel as well.
I really like my Dragonfly. It’s just FRN, but it’s some fancy semi-stainless blade. Cost over a $100 too! My early ladybug is pinned too. It has a rivet like a Higonokami. I’m not sure the very earliest Spydercos had jimping. I took my clip off anyway. I only buy Japanese Spydercos, as I collect Japanese knives.
I’m not sure why so many people have an issue with FRN. It’s tough, it’s resilient, it has a small amount of flex to it. It’s damn near unbreakable. The main drawback to FRN is instead of burning like G10 or Micarta it will melt. So it’s probably not a good idea to store it in your camp fire.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias the ‘problem’ with FRN is that it looks cheap. On casual inspection, it looks no more ‘precious’ than a “Dolica” gas station knife. My favourite Spyderco is an FRN Dragonfly, my favourite little European lock knife is an FRN MKM Isonzo. I’ve had G10 versions of both and got rid of them. However, once you get north of £100, I start to find myself finding FRN less attractive!!
@@slick_slicers , yep, at least on first pass it looks cheap. I think you can see the difference on a side to side comparison with a Frost knife. I like the molded handles on the Spyderco Knives over the Byrd line. But in the end, I think Spyderco should do some toughness tests of their FRN compared to Micarta, G10, and Delrin to show the advantages (if any) of why they have settled on FRN. I like it but I have to agree with you. It has a reputation of looking “cheap”; especially when molded in black!
5th attempt to make the video…man you’re in the wrong business, you should be making movies!!😂 Thank you so much Tobias for your video with super close ups and also the side line info you provided on screen. I’m really delighted to have found your channel, and came across it as I had just placed order for the Dragonfly Tattoo. ( hopefully will arrive in good condition). I love old style pocket knives (coz I’m getting old) but also new makes designed on the old style or with that little bit of difference and finesse. Thanks again, Keith.
Don’t get hooked on them coins!!!!!!! I just got another coin in and I was going to make a video on how nice they are!!!!!!!! Now I’m going to ask for challenge coins for Christmas and birthdays I’m hooked already thanks bud be well
I'll have to crack out my various Challenge coins some day. I don't have many, but I do like to get them. I'd love me a Rough Ryder Challenge Coin -- if it had the right design on it (The Rider on the horse surrounded by the Horseshoe would be aces!
I have yet to get a Dragonfly but they look great. I own the Byrd version but have been really considering the salt water Dragonfly just haven’t got there yet. I enjoy my Delica but every time I carry it I wish it had a forward finger choil. Thanks as always Tobias, amazing collection! 👍
For a dragonfly fan such as yourself, I think this makes a wonderful addition to the collection. Very nice looking knife. I recently bought a para 3 lightweight as well as a delica 4, because I got really good prices on both. So I broke my little tradition of only buying spydercos when I take trips to colorado. Taught myself to use that compression lock with my left hand, and that para 3 is really hogging my pocket the last couple weeks. The delica is great too, I just haven't had as much carry time with it yet. Yeah, it doesn't have that nice choil, but it does feel pretty nice in hand and it slices like crazy. Great video, buddy.
Once I flipped the pocket clip to left hand carry the compression lock was super east to use left handed. I still prefer the old fashioned the thumb opening best. And I'm pretty dang dood with the middle finger Spydie flick but for some reason it is the Dragonfly that find finds the pocket!
I have the Para 3 which, for me, fills the niche for a larger knife. I also have the Meadowlark 2. I think the Native 5 is pretty close to the Meadowlark. All seem to be perfectly suitable knives. For some reason I just find the Dragonfly capable of doing everything I need from a single blade knife.
Great Video! Spyderco is one of my favorite knife companies, hence my username. I have at least 80 Spyderco's. I found your channel when I started getting interested in GEC's & Traditional knives. Spyderco knives marked "Seki City" are manufactured by G. Sakai. The G stands for Gerber, in honor of Gerber Legendary Blades. Spyderco's marked with "Japan" are produced by Moki. Speaking of Moki, they manufactured the Caly 3 & Caly 3.5 for Spyderco. Those knives share a lot of characteristics with the Dragonfly, albeit much larger. Unfortunately, the Caly 3 is discontinued & the Caly 3.5 is quite expensive. I own a green G10 Caly 3 Spring Run with HAP40 blade steel. Again, I enjoy your videos immensely.
Thanks for the Spydie info. The more I hear and read about the company, the more I like. And the more I use the Dragonfly, the more I want to use and carry it. The thing is built to last and it ready to take on many challenges the few would expect it to handle.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias Spyderco has an awesome history. Like inventing the pocket clip & the round opening hole. Spyderco used to refer to the Dragonfly as a "little big knife". Basically reiterating what you said. A small knife that can handle big tasks. The only Dragonfly I own is the G10 variant with VG-10 steel. I never got around to purchasing any of the others. One of my friends has the black FRN version, & that's a better bargain. If you're considering one of the Dragonfly Salt series, go with the SpyderEdge (serrated), because H1 steels edge retention isn't very good, although it's an amazing corrosion resistance is 2nd to none. H1 also scratches very easily. I learned quite a bit about your review today. I've never handled a Stainless Steel handle variant of the Dragonfly. I didn't know they didn't have jimping, or the Tattoo variant was deeply engraved. I know you like the stoneworx series by Rough Rider, but did you know that Santa Fe Stoneworks has customized various Spyderco models in the past? Including the Dragonfly? As you could imagine, they're quite spendy.
You’re lucky not to be interested in the periphery stuff like coins. It allows you to save your money for knives. I was watching another channel and, as you said, the reviewer found the knife a bit small to his liking. It’s not a knife for a person with bear paws for hands. That’s for sure!
I just can't get myself to like the typical Spydercos, I have a Byrd slip joint and a Positron flipper. I never use the Byrd as I find in my hand all the action is put into the tip because of the grip angle and is not how I use a knife most of the time, I prefer to use the belly just back from the tip, I also never use or like a finger choil, it always seems to me if a knife needs a finger choil the grip was not designed correctly. I do like the Positron though because it is a fairly normal knife, with the bonus of being able to move the clip for a lefty carry, something that is probably the best feature about most spydy's. I tried a Para2 and a Delica, gave away the Para and sold the Delica at a loss, because I really didn't like them. All of the above might be because I'm a grumpy old git but I ain't gonna change now, it's too late.
My wife loves her Dragonfly Tattoo. So I bought her wearable Dragon Fly Art Kimono Blouse and Tank Top. I'll stick to my Military, fits my hand better.

I usually dislike metal handled knives, but in this case the engraving tattoo redeems it for me. Great video, as usual.

agree with your praise of the Dragonfly - I love my Salt version and am drawn to its light-weight, small, utility!
It's always cool to get paperwork with a knife. Outstanding video . Thanks Tobias.

I just got my first Dragonfly, a Knifejoy exclusive. The fit is different but really good.
Nice. It’s a good knife
I find it amazing how expensive some knives are. It pays to wait though :) Very cool knife buddy!
Nice video as always, I honestly have never seen the appeal in spyderco knives, but to each his own.
I wasn’t a fan before I became a fan. LOL! I can understand your point of view.

The Native 5 and the little Native both have the forward finger coil .

Yep. I'm sure more than one person will say it looks "girlie.' I don't care. I guess when the time comes, I'll make sure my grand-daughter gets it!
I’ve had that little tattoo in my fifth pocket for quite a few years .

Nice knife, but this video was more rambling than anything
I've been known to do that.
