- I test both of my Shimano Aldebaran BFS reels to see if running less magnets will improve the casting performance... So this test should apply to all FTB reels!

haven't hear anything in 2 years but he probably is just busy with his kid and with his country's new fishing regulating doesn't have time to go way far to fish. Hopefully he eventually comes back, his video's were always really good.

Thanks for the objective tests. I've been running the 6 magnets in my reels because I really like the braking profile as well. I feel that I get a much smoother braking action as well. I am fairly new at baitcasting, and have bad memories as a kid from too many bird's nests. I like a tame reel! I've thought about being a bit anal and running a test with 7 magnets. Right now, I am enjoying my Aldebaran and Calcutta with 6 magnets. I'm also using a Daiwa Alphas Air BFS that I just got. I'm liking that reel too. I continue to try to learn this method of casting. I've watched your basic video on casting, but more videos on casting techniques would great for us beginners.

YO-ZURI snap bean is my favorite lure of all time! I always catch fish 🎣 with it.
I feel that the 2 extra magnets are good for very light baits and also more manageable casting for newbie’s.
I've Watched your Reel tests with interest but knowing they're just a baseline of potential performance. Especially when dealing with BFS reels. Real world applied casting can be much different than winging things in a field. So much at play, some bfs reels cast more proficient with different length and actions of rods. Braid mono and flouro will also make a difference when paired with different braking systems and rod actions and lengths.
Not to down play your very careful and time consuming work. your tests do help to get an idea of a reels capabilities, i just always took it with a grain of salt.
But. this testing had a real world difference.
After watching this vid I added 2 magnets to my (Aldebaran) and removed 2 from my conquest. (I previously reasoned that less brakes was better for sub 1/8th and more braking for greater than 1/8th).
after the switch i was casting (Aldebaran) atomic tubes with accuracy way better than before. Also could cast 1/16th ounce mono spin jig with just a crappie magnet trailer which i was struggling to before. Pretty impressive.
When i cast my conquest for the first time with 6 brakes my 3.5" flipn tube sailed clear across the stream and into a tree...so yeah went further! lol

Since I constantly buy new reels every month, unfortunately I havent had time on the Phantom to judge, but there are quite a few youtube reviews out that say its solid
What reel would you recommend if I want to use fly fishing lures? I want something that I can use out the box and throw 1g lures, and what rod would you pair it with? thank you!

To be honest I filmed the original cut like 5 months ago with a side casting view, but I scrapped all of it to do the field test because I couldnt see where the 1/16th oz lures were landing. The joys of doing TH-cam

What do you mean by the minimum brake setting? Are you referring to the lowest brake setting that you were able to cast without without backlashing and without having to thumbing the spool (which obviously makes distance comparison impossible if thumbing the spool is required to control backlash)? Maybe you mentioned it, but what size and type of line were you using? Thanks for the vid

I don't really or never use the "N" magnetic at all the brake is fine the way they're (magnetic) in my opinion
What website do you order the shimano antares from? Please let me know
Got a feeling they used the 'N' for locating purposes, and chose the 'N' because maybe they used Neodymium magnets.
