Bruce's first high school band, The Castiles (1965-68) had a drummer named Bart Haynes. He went to Vietnam and was killed. If memory serves me correctly, he was the first to be killed in Vietnam from his Bruce's hometown of Freehold. He was 19.
Another Jersey shore musician who Bruce admired was Walter Cichon from the band The Mofits. He went to Vietnam and was listed as MIA. He was 22. Bruce later wrote the moving song, The Wall, in his memory.
Bruce along with a couple of friends were drafted and went to take their physicals. Bruce failed due to a motorbike accident a couple of years earlier where a car T-bone him and damaged his leg. He has often said that he wondered who went in his place, as someone did.
Bruce worked a lot with the VVA organisation and held a couple of charity shows in the early 80's to raise funds as they were struggling. He got the message out there and helped save the organsiátion.
The Iraq War started just as Bruce began the Australian leg of The Rising tour in 2003. He opened every show with Born In The USA and War. Two very powerful songs.
The song is mostly known as Edwin Star's song. He joined Bruce a couple of times in 1988 on Bruce's Tunnel Of Love tour to duet on it.

And his song The Wall is just a perfect quiet, respectful and angry song about that

I like that you didn't interrupt the song. I hadn't heard it in years.
