When Lake said "I'm tellimg Mrs. J" and Lucas replied "Really? Think she'll believe you?" in 2:14 is probably the reason Lake pretended to be his brother because he knew no one will believe him.
I interpret it as Lake only taking Lucas's place because he had no other choice. Think about it, if Lucas the 'good' kid died, everyone would blame Lake for doing something since everyone knew Lake already hated his twin brother, not knowing Lucas was much, much worse. It feels somewhat poetic that the brother Lucas bullied to become more liked is the one who took his coveted position.
Somehow I feel like the ending was Lucas's final, unintentional joke. He said "You wish you were me." Lake never want to, but now he have to... For god knows how long it will be, until he either break the news or someone finds out. If this were to be real, yes I know it's dumb to feel sympathy to a fictional characters, but still--I hope they understand, more so as they have no right to judge him even more to live as his other half, who HATED him.

Lucas probably wished he was the 'me' he was referring to in that statement, which would add to Lake's point. Both twins were pretending to be that non-existent "Lucas."
Lake taking on Lucas' life has so much more power to it if you think about it because it's unlikely that anyone would believe him with what happened. Lucas ruined his reputation so thoroughly that everyone would assume it was in some way Lake's fault. In the end, it would be much easier to be Lucas and have the good reputation Lake was always meant to have. It's like a clean slate, a way to finally emerge from the stigma that Lucas fabricated for him.
It is still very sad. They are both kids. They don't know what they are doing. I blame the parents and teacher for not stepping in. As adults they should have seen this getting out of hand.

@@JuMiKu Well, the sad things is that children won't always listen to their parents, and that siblings won't suddenly stop their innapropriate behaviour just because their parents said to do so. Sometimes, it can even take more than just the parents. As for the teacher, she more than likely noticed it but was ignorant about it (Some teachers are like that, I've met some)
Although not my favorite, I found the story... oddly satisfying and new. Most stories of siblings follow a plot where sibling A and B start out rocky, but make up once they put aside their differences. "Twins" has a raw realism that explores how damaged and/or toxic a sibling relationship can become. It's even brave enough to explore a scenario where the relationship (for lack of better words) "dies", as though telling its audience such a thing can happen.
The ending is so crushing. Besides the fact no one would believe him but there is the underlying feeling that he knows everyone would prefer that outcome. Imagine having to live your life hearing everything everyone thought about you as you pretend to be the person who made them preserve you that way.
The fact that Lake had to disguise himself as Lucas really says what the world thought of him, and what he thought of himself. He thought Lake wouldn't be as missed as Lucas, despite saying earlier that if people knew the real Lucas, they would like Lake more.
The world can be horrible because of favouritism embedded into our society. The favouritism in our society is the reason why people can have low self-esteem, envy, greed etc. This short film is a great example of favouritism within our society, just with a darker twist.
Luca's whole life was dependent on a lie at Lake's expense....And it's not like anyone besides Lake knew about the real Lucas anyway. "Very bad" Lake is gone. "Good 'ol" Lucas simply needs a new pair of glasses, and one less bad apple to be late for class. The evil(er?) twin is gone, regardless of who everybody thinks that was....And figuring the Lake and Lucas their family and community know never even really existed, let's hope this Lucas turns out better than the first one was going to...
Lake didn't have a choice, dude. If he told the truth that Lucas was they one who came into the junk yard, no one would believe him. Its easier if everyone thought Lake was the one who disappeared

The saddest part about this ending is that he couldn't tell them the truth even if he wanted to. Because everyone thinks he's a troublemaker, they probably will think he killed his brother out of jealousy. Even his parents probably wouldn't believe him. Look at Lake's missing child picture. It's cropped, Lucas is looking perfect (from how much i can see) and Lake is angry/ doesn't even wanna be there. That's the only picture his parents found/have of him. It shows how much he was ignored considering no one even had a decent pic of him

I like how in the end, while Lake looks like Lucas, his hair is slightly messier, alluding to his original hair. His demeanor is also more calm, indicating how he is still adjusting to being Lucas.
A chilling story. In honesty, I do wonder if his parents will even care that 'Lake' is missing so long as they stil have what they *think* is their Golden Child. In time, they will forget him as a bad and diappointing memory.
I'm getting chills, that missing poster and how he sneakily closes his backpack with his car toy inside. This is beautifully animated, and the story is truly chilling.
I realized my mistake the glasses twin did die but at the end the non glasses turns into the glasses twin since they’re twins because of the toy car thats why the short film is called “twins”.
This is oddly confusing. To sum it up, the twin with the glasses got hit by the car and the twin without the glasses dressed up pretending to be the twin with the glasses. Since people thought the twin with glasses was still alive, the missing poster shows the twin without glasses who’s gone “missing” because he’s actually pretending to be the twin with glasses who has actually died.
What I saw, was lake carrying luke (if that’s his name I forgot) and then, I thought Lake died because of the car in Luke’s backpack, I’ll look at the backpacks and see. Edit: I JUST REALIZED THE HAIR AND IVE WATCHED THIS FILM 5 TIMES-

That ending tho And how flawless that could be. It’s easy to say him and “lake” got into a fight and the other ran away. It’s easy to say that he’s a bit different and has lower grades/stars after his brother’s disappearance because of the stress and change. They lived together and probably even had the same room, so he would know enough about his mannerisms to copy them enough to hide. The only problem might be going to the eye doctor for new glasses if he didn’t need them but his brother did.

If you pay closer attention, you can see that lake (as Lucas) was putting up a missing sign of himself showing that nobody really did care about him because if they did care, they would’ve put up the sign when they realized he was gone 3:51
I don't even think Lake was psychotic, he was pushed around so many times by his brother, and was treated terribly being in a toxic relationship. Lake didn't even intend for Lucas' death, he just wanted his car back that Lucas wouldn't give back. Although, it is pretty dark that he took over his brother's life, and faking his death. And even then, no one would believe him even if he came out with the truth and said he got hit by a car, everyone would just think he murdered Lucas intentionally. So in Lake's mind, the best possible option that he saw for himself was to just take over his brother's life.
HOLY I WAS NOT EXPECTING A DARK ANIMATED FILM. Animation films I have seen are symbolic, have a good ending, or has an overarching message. This is so unique!
The real kicker is knowing that no one will recognize that they're interacting with the wrong twin. He did such devious things to his brother in order to be "liked". Yet, in the end, no one knew him well enough to see the difference. No one will realize that an imposter took his place, because that's how surface level his "popularity" was. They weren't his friends.

Honestly, this chilled me and gave me “there’s a man in the woods” vibes. The fact that Lucas purposely tried to make it out for him to be the hero and only said sorry in his time of need is just insane. Also, I find it odd no one has found Lucas’s body yet, like, did the car come back? Did lake bury him? What happened?
Didn’t see many people point it out, but I like how color is used in specific parts of the short, specifically in the junkyard scene and onwards. To understand you need to know that Lucas wears a blue shirt and lake wears a red one. While Lucas lures lake into the junkyard with his toy car, he’s in “control” so the area/surroundings are blue-ish. Contrarily, at 2:54 once lake takes control, the scenery turns red.
Yeah it really makes it feel like Lake is out of place in the junkyard, until he take control of the situation, where the scene turns red, which depicts a sense of urgency, but also that Lake has the upper hand.
I'm glad that the bird with the dead mouse was added in that scene before the brother died. It kind of prepares the audience for the death that's about to happen, and kinds of symbolize how the protagonist would carry the identity of a dead child.
I agree also because in certain native American beliefs, looking into an owls eyes can bring bad luck (especially death). I mean I don't know if that was also the symbolic meaning of the owl but that was my personal perception
What I really like about this film is the foreshadowing. When Lake appears late to class, he kicks Lucas in the ankle. And the next scene shows Lake running a rock over with his toy car while looking at Lucas, foreshadowing the car running the boy over while Lake isn't paying attention. It was in front of our faces all this time and I was nOT expecting that ending, it was so dark and unique and I love it!
2:53 when he says “ shut up! You wish you were me!”, you can sense something in his tone of voice. You can see the real Lucas. He’s telling himself that because he thinks if people become friends with lake they’ll stop liking him. He’s a kid, he needs validation and craves attention. He’s scared of isolation. In that moment we can see Lucas briefly break out of the perfect persona he’s created for himself and see how vulnerable and fragile he really is. He’s not a snob, he’s scared of what people will think if he’s not perfect.
Yes, and it may be because Lucas was in an more open range but when he said “Shut up” it did not echo unlike when Lake did indicating that Lake is easily known as the “bad kid”

That's cruel. Sure, he's a sociopath but he's still a kid. He was begging his brother for help and the boy did nothing. I acknowledge that Lucas would not have done anything either and that the car came speeding out of nowhere and Lake was just as suprised by what happened. It was a tragic accident. For me, the last scene was poignant because I can imagine Lake being haunted by his brother last words- begging him for help. I think it doesn't matter who survived because, in a way, no one made it out unscathed. And it seems to me like both twins died on that road.

Had he not done any of these steps (destroying his brother's reputation, stealing his car, running to the junkyard, trying to break the car) he would have not been killed. Has anyone noticed that Lake doesn't appear in the reflection of the car window (2:46)? In my opinion, that also symbolizes that Lake doesn't even exist, he's invisible to others, while Lucas is always the twin who has all the attention turned to him. If Lake was the one who died, probably no one would have cared about his disappearance.

I love their character designs. Usually, the bad guys in stories would be dressed similar as Lake, and the "nerds" (glasses stereotype) would be more preppy, clean, and in a lot of cases, always the victim of some bully of sorts. It's really nice and refreshing change.
True but as of now there's starting to be more and more of this reversed archetype. As people with glasses that dresses overly nice is also often to be shown to have a smug dark side, or is supposed to be the annoying villain, like berdly.

If he wasn't he would never have said that or even considered his brother's feelings considering his unknown literal hatred for him. The real David Pumpkernickel's body was found decomposing in a river bank, apparently the man replaced him for six days before the grieving family got the news. He was subsequently arrested, but wasn't jailed, as his behavior did not constitute a crime at the time. It's unclear as to how similar the two men looked, but the fact nobody figured it out until the body was found is pretty trippy, right?
While the boys are exploring the old car field, an owl makes recurring appearances. Owls are viewed as omens of death, so that's a nice foreshadowing :) Edit: yes, there are many different animals that are seen as omens of death, owls are just one of them and just so happen to be used in this animation lol
I love the framing foreshadowing when Lake and Lucas are fighting on the train tracks, where Lake is “in” the “toy” car for a moment before he pushes Lucas onto the tracks. I also love the intricate camera movements and the amazing lighting as well as palette that really brongs the mood together, the sound design is great too. They both sound so “innocent” in a way that diverts expectation, especially since they are clearly very young looking. I love the palette work and the backgrounds, the animation is really smooth and I cant imagine how long this took. The writing is great, very creative and I love the amount of work put into this. Lake is pretty mischievous (carving into the table and kicking Lucas) but Lucas is very selfish, and both are pretty normal for a kid.
What's more scary is that he's wearing the same clothes Lucas died in, He literally took off the clothes of his brothers mangled broken lifeless body and started wearing it
This is *beautiful*. For the people saying Lake is a psychopath- no, he is not. That is a disorder and he shows none of the symptoms. In fact, he did not mean for his brother to get hurt. He didn't know the car was there. And after all, if that had been Lake with a hurt ankle, would Lucas have helped him up? If anything, Lucas could be the one diagnosed as a psychopath. He manipulates and has no remorse for what he is doing for his brother. This short is just amazing. It deserves to be seen. People do not understand how toxic sibling relationships, no matter if there's am age difference or they're twins, can be.
I agree though that idea neglects to mention the fact that Lake might have straight up killed Lucas. The car that runs him over looks identical to Lake’s toy car. It could be a metaphor. In that case I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that both of them were psychopaths

Honestly when the boys entered the broken car field, I thought LAKE would be the one to get hurt and make Lucas feel bad about everything he's done to him. But OH MY GOD, I was NOT expecting Lucas to die and be replaced by his brother. This took a dark twist and I loved it.
While Lake was holding the pipe I thought for a moment he was going to intentionally kill Lucas, or at least hit him maybe not trying to kill him but end up doing it. I was like, "man, Lucas, really not reading the room when the kid with no reputation and nothing to lose is holding a weapon and you're all alone."
Fun fact: If I’m correct, the car that hits Lucas is the same exact car Lake has as a toy, I feel like that was foreshadowing or something. Though that would be interesting to share.
I feel bad for both brothers in this film because Lucas lost his life and Lake is left with the guilt of not saving his brother for the rest of his life ( I'm pretty sure if he knew the car was coming he would have helped him up). Besides the ending, I still really enjoyed this animation I loved the style and in my opinion the voice acting was really good!
At the end, I literally got a chill down my spine. Seriously. I wasn't scared until that end. Especially the "missing" child poster. Geez. That was great! Seriously done a better job than most professional companies can do! Great storytelling in only 3 minutes! Better than a full length film could do, that's for sure
I think the saddest part is that Lake knew that if Lucas went missing, he’d probably be suspected first and tormented for the rest of his life. If Lake went missing, no one would care. Lake loses both ways and that’s just depressing.
Yeah i saw it as he took his brothers identity because he would be blamed maliciously for the death instead of it being an accident, so if he covers up the death as a missing and taking his brothers identity they would believe actually believe in him and what he says.
Lake didn't intend for him to die! You can tell by how surprised he was when the car came. I think he was so scared that he might get in trouble because everyone would've thought he killed him by their relationship, so he pretended to be his brother in the end sense he's the special treated one!
When Lake (at the end when he was impersonating Lucas) said that Lake (of course he was acting that Lake was gone) was late, you could even hear him speaking in a sorrow voice and that he wasn’t joking about it like how Lucas would usually do.

Well executed, chilling and an over-all excellent analysis of both twin and sibling mentality. It is hard to stand up to the perceived "golden child", especially when they are your sibling. Lucas is a product of excessive praise and, as a result became a bully. Lake was forced to sit in his brother's shadow due to being framed as the "problem child". You can tell from the teacher's dismissal over Lake being late and the smug face Lucas makes at saying his brother is running late that this is a common occurrence. Lucas possibly sabotages his brother when they wake up and it likely rouses no suspicion because they live close enough to walk to school. Little behaviors like this, if left unchecked, can gradually grow until you get a situation like we see in the first half; where Lake is tormented constantly because Lucas abuses the fact that everyone sees him as the better child. This is particularly bad in cases with twins because not only are people more likely to compare you both, but you effectively have a living mirror you are expected to be a perfect replica of.
I have an identical twin brother and can honestly say that we have never been held to the standard of the other twin. In both our home and public lives we have always been judged on our own merits. Not saying this is normal for all twins, mind you. Just sharing my own experience.
In the Credits, You can actually see that Lake put up the missing poster of himself. You can see that because the arm that’s shown putting up the poster has a mark on it, the mark is the exact one on Lake’s clothes and the mark is also in the exact location shown. This might mean that nobody actually cares about lake enough to put up the missing poster of him, so he does it himself.
It's even sadder, because he is the only one to care enough about himself to at least print these posters. Not his teacher, not his parents, nobody but Lake himself... He is the only one who is missing ,,the real Lake" and that's so depressing...
I completely expected this to be a heartfelt, typical, yet still cute “love your family, you never know how much they mean to you until you lose them”. But this was SO much better and unexpected
0:32 , watch Lake's action with the car. 0:37 , the sketch with the scissors 3:13 , it shows the car entering the screen as soon as he turned around. Meaning he never intentionally meaned to kill Lucas. 3:23 , him dragging the body through the reflection of the glasses. Lake's car was supposed to be a symbol of the car running over Lucas.
Wrong again the red is actually Lucas and the other with glasses is lake and they switch places cause lake manipulated Lucas cause he hear him say they won’t believe you and he said they would not be your friends if they knew who you really were
Sibling competition and toxic relationships are a real thing and I'm glad this animation didn't sugar coating it like most stories in which people ideally feel about how siblings are. And worst, most of these people believing in idealistic siblings' love are parents who will ignore signs of toxic sibling relationships their children are living in. They were just like.... "Oh a siblings fight is typical, they love each other anyway. They are "SIBLINGS"" Well, there're cases of siblings murdering each other all around the world. Notice it where it starts and try fixing it before things get worse.

I think it's silly how at the beginning of the film, Lake kicks Lucas' ankle but it doesn't do much harm and nearing the end, Lake steps on Lucas' ankle which immobilizes him, causing his death. I think it symbolizes how Lucas pushed Lake to his limit and made his anger grow stronger like how his kick grew stronger.
All the moments that have a hidden meaning in it, summed up by observant people in the comments section below, and some of my own thoughts as well: .At the scene just after Lake kicked Lucas in the ankle, Lake was running his toy car over a pebble, foreshadowing Lucas's death where he was hit in the ankle and unable to move, and killed by the car looking real similar to Lake's one .The background, the sky, when the twins entered the restricted area was mainly a bluish shade, matching Lucas's clothesd and symbolizing his dominance. When Lake pushed Lucas, the scene and everything turned red, which was the colour of Lake's shirt .At the last scene (credits) it was Lake (disguised as Lucas) himself putting up the missing poster, you can tell from their bruise. This makes the story even darker and sadder as it meant that no one even cared about Lake not his parents teachers or classmates, and Lake himself had to put up a missing poster, as the only person who cared about Lake was Lake himself. .Owls, an omen of death, we're frequently seen around the restricted area, and one was in the background when Lucas got killed. .When in the scene, Lake was confronting Lucas, in the car mirror you can only see Lucas's reflection. Meaning that people treated Lake as invisible and non-existent, and how he felt and everything doesn't matter. He might as well as not exist at all to them. .When Lucas was telling Mrs J Lake was late, he spoke in a very arrogant tone and making the others laugh. When the more kind-hearted Lake, disguised as Lucas, framed his own self, he spoke in a less-arrogant tone and the laughters weren't so taunting as well .In the scene where Lake was vandalising his table with his scissors he was drawing a decapitated Lucas .Lake was kind after all and he did not know that a car was about to hit Lucas. You can see Lucas pleading and his horrified face as he knew he was about to die. Lake didn't know that and just thought he was asking for help and pull him up normally, and he eventually turned around to help Lucas (right before the car ran over Lucas). So he was kind-hearted and did not meant to kill Lucas intentionally after all .Oh yah also at the end credits scene the picture of Lake wasn't even a decent one, but one portraying Lake as a mean bully and Lucas aside as a nice guy. Lake was so discriminated against that no one even bothers to take a decent photo of him That's all for now, sorry if I didn't add timestamps.
I love how even the adults who are assumed to be wiser than the kids don't award the kids with good character/heart but the bullies who are smart enough to be subtle about their harassment
To those who don’t understand the ending, Lucas got ran over by a car and died, lake didn’t see the the car coming. Lake dressed in Lucas’ clothes and disguised himself as him.
3:31 The visual mastermind behind the ending scene is just extraordinary. I like to think that the shot of the classroom after Lucas’s death is from everyone else’s perspective. Lake is late again and “Lucas” is making fun of him again, it’s a nice normal, sunny clear day in the classroom. But as the camera shifts over to Lake, the blue lighting starts to shift over to a dark and spooky red. The classrooms perspective is switched to Lake’s. The red slowly takes over the screen as it is revealed that it’s actually Lake. The red reveals the insanity of Lake. It’s revealed how much he was tormented by his brother to the point he would be doing this.
I agree with you, but even then there should be some sort of instinctive desire to help someone in mortal danger and this is really sad how it turned out.
The symbolism of the bag at the end. Lake zipped up the bag with the toy car in it. I interpreted it as symbolism of him keeping the whole accident a secret, zipping his lips, and keeping it to himself.
I actually really liked that little twist, even after all of that bullying he still wanted to help his brother but then karma decided it was enough lol
Reminds me of a case where a little girl went missing. Turns out she went to a forest with her younger brother, they found a $20 bill, fought over it, and she fell onto a sharp part of a log or something and died. He didn't mean to kill her and panicked, hiding her body and telling no one for years. Really awful stuff, really goes to show how life can change in an instant

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE VOICE ACTING? It is totally on point, everything about perfectly captures the scene and the vibe intended, you feel absorbed within the world of the story and the emotions FEEL REAL. These actors truly make these characters feel like actual children speaking which makes the reveal at the end even more eerie. Props to you guys, you did excellent! We also can’t forget the amazing camera work, animation, composing and the writing aswell! Good job and thank you, everyone who worked on this project. ALSO IM SO INVESTED IN THIS STORY, IM STILL YEARNING FOR MORE!!! It’s a shame it couldn’t be a series or something, but on the other hand a short film fits the format of the story perfectly and the story telling’s pacing is impeccable!

Actually no, it sounds very amateur, its not bad, not at all, but it has room for improvement. The voices dont fit the characters a 100%, they obviously sound like older women doing young boys voices, and the acting needs a bit more expression, but its not bad, really.
Here’s something that’s really bugging me, if Lake is able to take Lucas’s so effortlessly and there’s a missing posture of him, that means even their parents can’t tell them apart!

3:12 I like the little detail that Lake was looking at the car and not Lucas, meaning Lake was shocked not because he saw Lucas getting run over, it's actually because of the car moving close to Lake.
Well, one important thing that everyone seems to miss is how the adults dealt with them, they just instinctively punished Lake without bothering to talk to him about his behavior or address his brothers smug attitude towards him or the constant tattling. That's lazy behavior, when some people become adults they just need to weasel themselves into a position of authority so that they never have to grow up, and throw their weight around just for kicks. Another thing is that Lucas thrived on his power over his brother to the point that it became an addiction, he constantly tormented him when they were alone, but he couldn't take even a minor sleight, and then his over confidence got the best of him and was proven misplaced. My brother did the same thing to me growing up, he was entitled to dish it out, but could never take it in, but I'm satisfied with getting my licks in so I'm not really motivated to get even.

@@twentyonetortas5921 Well not everyone, I got bullied both at school and at home, but my divorced dad that I barely got to see was probably the only person who kept me from ending it all, they got better but that doesn't excuse them from making my life a living hell. I did stuff to them every now and then, I think I felt bad for some of it but looking back on the entitlement issues on how they got to treat me I only feel regret for feeling bad.

The ending chilled my to the bone. I thought Lake got hit by the car, until I saw the car in his backpack. Lucas got hit by the car. In the "missing" poster, Lucas was pinching Lake's cheek. Gosh.

The animation was well made! I don't completley blame Lake for his brothers death. Lake did not know his brother was abt to get hit, you can even see a hint of surprise at the car scene 3:10
I had always had a similar idea about twins like this where one (the loved one/favorite) dies and the other (the more trouble making or ignored) lives but takes their siblings place to either save their peers/parents from grief and/or to give themselves their siblings life. However, I never would have been able to execute it so well. I love the way it was portrayed here with minimal background context. All we needed to see was their behavior in school and the way each was treated. The posters at the end also gave huge chills because the real one missing is the "perfect" one while the one marked gone is sitting right there yet no one can tell. It also shows how superficial everyone was with both of them and how the twin who survived was willing to change his behavior to obtain his brother's life. The fact that a flyer was even put out though shows that both twins were loved but it is quite clear which was the favorite. This whole story is heartbreaking but a very good tale with a moral one can learn. One possible moral being don't be so critical of a person and compare them to someone else. Each individual is shaped in their own way. Another moral is also don't push somebody to the point they are willing to take somebody else's life (in this case impersonation). Also don't push your own insecurities onto others. Its clear both twins had their own issues. The "perfect" one wanted to be distinguished from his brother and wanted to be noticed in a positive light so he was willing to push his brother under the bus. This later became the end of him.
If you haven't heard of/played Martha is Dead, I highly recommend checking it out. It starts with the favorite twin dying and least favored is mistaken for her and just goes along with it.
To be honest, I feel like the teacher’s more of a villain. The teacher obviously saw how Lake was excluded and mocked by the other kids, and did nothing about it. For example, in the scene where Lake was pushed to the floor, she still marked Lake off even though he didn’t do anything wrong and other kids were laughing at him. She shouldn’t have let preferences get over her, and I hope she regrets it after Lake’s “disappearance”. The timestamp is a little bit after 0:50 but before 0:51
TBH, as a teacher, that really bugged me. It is not one TENTH as easy in real life as people think it is to deeply understand the social life of the classroom, but you generally DO get at least an idea of what the dynamics are. That teacher needed to get her head out of her ass and flip the script. Most teachers I know roll their eyes at serial tattle-tales, FWIW.
It's possible the purple in her dress represents how she has contributed, knowingly or not, to each boy's social image. She sees Lucas as the more well-behaved one so she trusts his word whenever he says Lake did something wrong. She sees Lake as a troublemaker so when Lucas calls him out she always punishes him, in front of everyone.
This animation was so good. "You wish you were me!" the amazing foreshadowing due to the car as well. I was surprised when i finally figured out Lake turned into Lucas. It looks like Lake got hit but it was really Lucas.

I interpret it as Lake only taking Lucas's place because he had no other choice. Think about it, if Lucas the 'good' kid died, everyone would blame Lake for doing something since everyone knew Lake already hated his twin brother, not knowing Lucas was much, much worse.
It feels somewhat poetic that the brother Lucas bullied to become more liked is the one who took his coveted position.

Lake taking on Lucas' life has so much more power to it if you think about it because it's unlikely that anyone would believe him with what happened. Lucas ruined his reputation so thoroughly that everyone would assume it was in some way Lake's fault. In the end, it would be much easier to be Lucas and have the good reputation Lake was always meant to have. It's like a clean slate, a way to finally emerge from the stigma that Lucas fabricated for him.
It is still very sad. They are both kids. They don't know what they are doing. I blame the parents and teacher for not stepping in. As adults they should have seen this getting out of hand.

Although not my favorite, I found the story... oddly satisfying and new. Most stories of siblings follow a plot where sibling A and B start out rocky, but make up once they put aside their differences. "Twins" has a raw realism that explores how damaged and/or toxic a sibling relationship can become. It's even brave enough to explore a scenario where the relationship (for lack of better words) "dies", as though telling its audience such a thing can happen.

The ending is so crushing. Besides the fact no one would believe him but there is the underlying feeling that he knows everyone would prefer that outcome. Imagine having to live your life hearing everything everyone thought about you as you pretend to be the person who made them preserve you that way.

The fact that Lake had to disguise himself as Lucas really says what the world thought of him, and what he thought of himself. He thought Lake wouldn't be as missed as Lucas, despite saying earlier that if people knew the real Lucas, they would like Lake more.
The world can be horrible because of favouritism embedded into our society. The favouritism in our society is the reason why people can have low self-esteem, envy, greed etc. This short film is a great example of favouritism within our society, just with a darker twist.

He's now burdened to live someone else's life forever.

Look at Lake's missing child picture. It's cropped, Lucas is looking perfect (from how much i can see) and Lake is angry/ doesn't even wanna be there. That's the only picture his parents found/have of him. It shows how much he was ignored considering no one even had a decent pic of him

I realized my mistake the glasses twin did die but at the end the non glasses turns into the glasses twin since they’re twins because of the toy car thats why the short film is called “twins”.
This is oddly confusing. To sum it up, the twin with the glasses got hit by the car and the twin without the glasses dressed up pretending to be the twin with the glasses. Since people thought the twin with glasses was still alive, the missing poster shows the twin without glasses who’s gone “missing” because he’s actually pretending to be the twin with glasses who has actually died.
What I saw, was lake carrying luke (if that’s his name I forgot) and then, I thought Lake died because of the car in Luke’s backpack, I’ll look at the backpacks and see.

And how flawless that could be. It’s easy to say him and “lake” got into a fight and the other ran away. It’s easy to say that he’s a bit different and has lower grades/stars after his brother’s disappearance because of the stress and change. They lived together and probably even had the same room, so he would know enough about his mannerisms to copy them enough to hide. The only problem might be going to the eye doctor for new glasses if he didn’t need them but his brother did.
Another thing since they are young they have parents how would he hide the truth from them?

I don't even think Lake was psychotic, he was pushed around so many times by his brother, and was treated terribly being in a toxic relationship.
Lake didn't even intend for Lucas' death, he just wanted his car back that Lucas wouldn't give back.
Although, it is pretty dark that he took over his brother's life, and faking his death.
And even then, no one would believe him even if he came out with the truth and said he got hit by a car, everyone would just think he murdered Lucas intentionally.
So in Lake's mind, the best possible option that he saw for himself was to just take over his brother's life.

Didn’t see many people point it out, but I like how color is used in specific parts of the short, specifically in the junkyard scene and onwards. To understand you need to know that Lucas wears a blue shirt and lake wears a red one. While Lucas lures lake into the junkyard with his toy car, he’s in “control” so the area/surroundings are blue-ish. Contrarily, at 2:54 once lake takes control, the scenery turns red.

I'm glad that the bird with the dead mouse was added in that scene before the brother died. It kind of prepares the audience for the death that's about to happen, and kinds of symbolize how the protagonist would carry the identity of a dead child.
I agree also because in certain native American beliefs, looking into an owls eyes can bring bad luck (especially death). I mean I don't know if that was also the symbolic meaning of the owl but that was my personal perception

What I really like about this film is the foreshadowing. When Lake appears late to class, he kicks Lucas in the ankle. And the next scene shows Lake running a rock over with his toy car while looking at Lucas, foreshadowing the car running the boy over while Lake isn't paying attention. It was in front of our faces all this time and I was nOT expecting that ending, it was so dark and unique and I love it!
And also when Lake was drawing on his desk it showed Lucas dead

In that moment we can see Lucas briefly break out of the perfect persona he’s created for himself and see how vulnerable and fragile he really is. That's cruel. Sure, he's a sociopath but he's still a kid. He was begging his brother for help and the boy did nothing. I acknowledge that Lucas would not have done anything either and that the car came speeding out of nowhere and Lake was just as suprised by what happened. It was a tragic accident. For me, the last scene was poignant because I can imagine Lake being haunted by his brother last words- begging him for help.
I think it doesn't matter who survived because, in a way, no one made it out unscathed. And it seems to me like both twins died on that road.

I love their character designs. Usually, the bad guys in stories would be dressed similar as Lake, and the "nerds" (glasses stereotype) would be more preppy, clean, and in a lot of cases, always the victim of some bully of sorts. It's really nice and refreshing change.
True but as of now there's starting to be more and more of this reversed archetype. As people with glasses that dresses overly nice is also often to be shown to have a smug dark side, or is supposed to be the annoying villain, like berdly.

I love the framing foreshadowing when Lake and Lucas are fighting on the train tracks, where Lake is “in” the “toy” car for a moment before he pushes Lucas onto the tracks. I also love the intricate camera movements and the amazing lighting as well as palette that really brongs the mood together, the sound design is great too. They both sound so “innocent” in a way that diverts expectation, especially since they are clearly very young looking. I love the palette work and the backgrounds, the animation is really smooth and I cant imagine how long this took. The writing is great, very creative and I love the amount of work put into this. Lake is pretty mischievous (carving into the table and kicking Lucas) but Lucas is very selfish, and both are pretty normal for a kid.

This is *beautiful*. For the people saying Lake is a psychopath- no, he is not. That is a disorder and he shows none of the symptoms. In fact, he did not mean for his brother to get hurt. He didn't know the car was there. And after all, if that had been Lake with a hurt ankle, would Lucas have helped him up? If anything, Lucas could be the one diagnosed as a psychopath. He manipulates and has no remorse for what he is doing for his brother.

Honestly when the boys entered the broken car field, I thought LAKE would be the one to get hurt and make Lucas feel bad about everything he's done to him. But OH MY GOD, I was NOT expecting Lucas to die and be replaced by his brother. This took a dark twist and I loved it.
While Lake was holding the pipe I thought for a moment he was going to intentionally kill Lucas, or at least hit him maybe not trying to kill him but end up doing it. - The owl eating a critter represents Lucas carrying Lake's demise.
- The car represented Lake's point of view of trying to hurt Lucas. Which foreshadows later in the film.
- The tint of red in the roadkill scene shown Lake's true colors of who he really is.

Well executed, chilling and an over-all excellent analysis of both twin and sibling mentality. It is hard to stand up to the perceived "golden child", especially when they are your sibling. Lucas is a product of excessive praise and, as a result became a bully. Lake was forced to sit in his brother's shadow due to being framed as the "problem child". You can tell from the teacher's dismissal over Lake being late and the smug face Lucas makes at saying his brother is running late that this is a common occurrence. Lucas possibly sabotages his brother when they wake up and it likely rouses no suspicion because they live close enough to walk to school.
Little behaviors like this, if left unchecked, can gradually grow until you get a situation like we see in the first half; where Lake is tormented constantly because Lucas abuses the fact that everyone sees him as the better child. This is particularly bad in cases with twins because not only are people more likely to compare you both, but you effectively have a living mirror you are expected to be a perfect replica of.
Like John from the most recent 911 episode: he saved his bus driver from a heart attack and later started killing others for the attention.
I have an identical twin brother and can honestly say that we have never been held to the standard of the other twin. In both our home and public lives we have always been judged on our own merits.
Not saying this is normal for all twins, mind you. Just sharing my own experience.

You can see that because the arm that’s shown putting up the poster has a mark on it, the mark is the exact one on Lake’s clothes and the mark is also in the exact location shown. This might mean that nobody actually cares about lake enough to put up the missing poster of him, so he does it himself.

I think it's silly how at the beginning of the film, Lake kicks Lucas' ankle but it doesn't do much harm and nearing the end, Lake steps on Lucas' ankle which immobilizes him, causing his death. I think it symbolizes how Lucas pushed Lake to his limit and made his anger grow stronger like how his kick grew stronger.

All the moments that have a hidden meaning in it, summed up by observant people in the comments section below, and some of my own thoughts as well:
.At the scene just after Lake kicked Lucas in the ankle, Lake was running his toy car over a pebble, foreshadowing Lucas's death where he was hit in the ankle and unable to move, and killed by the car looking real similar to Lake's one
.The background, the sky, when the twins entered the restricted area was mainly a bluish shade, matching Lucas's clothesd and symbolizing his dominance. When Lake pushed Lucas, the scene and everything turned red, which was the colour of Lake's shirt
.At the last scene (credits) it was Lake (disguised as Lucas) himself putting up the missing poster, you can tell from their bruise. .When Lucas was telling Mrs J Lake was late, he spoke in a very arrogant tone and making the others laugh. When the more kind-hearted Lake, disguised as Lucas, framed his own self, he spoke in a less-arrogant tone and the laughters weren't so taunting as well

.Lake was kind after all and he did not know that a car was about to hit Lucas. You can see Lucas pleading and his horrified face as he knew he was about to die. Lake didn't know that and just thought he was asking for help and pull him up normally, and he eventually turned around to help Lucas (right before the car ran over Lucas). So he was kind-hearted and did not meant to kill Lucas intentionally after all
.Oh yah also at the end credits scene the picture of Lake wasn't even a decent one, but one portraying Lake as a mean bully and Lucas aside as a nice guy. Lake was so discriminated against that no one even bothers to take a decent photo of him

The visual mastermind behind the ending scene is just extraordinary. I like to think that the shot of the classroom after Lucas’s death is from everyone else’s perspective. Lake is late again and “Lucas” is making fun of him again, it’s a nice normal, sunny clear day in the classroom. But as the camera shifts over to Lake, the blue lighting starts to shift over to a dark and spooky red. The classrooms perspective is switched to Lake’s. The red slowly takes over the screen as it is revealed that it’s actually Lake. The red reveals the insanity of Lake. It’s revealed how much he was tormented by his brother to the point he would be doing this.

The symbolism of the bag at the end. Lake zipped up the bag with the toy car in it. I interpreted it as symbolism of him keeping the whole accident a secret, zipping his lips, and keeping it to himself.

Turns out she went to a forest with her younger brother, they found a $20 bill, fought over it, and she fell onto a sharp part of a log or something and died. He didn't mean to kill her and panicked, hiding her body and telling no one for years. Really awful stuff, really goes to show how life can change in an instant

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE VOICE ACTING? It is totally on point, everything about perfectly captures the scene and the vibe intended, you feel absorbed within the world of the story and the emotions FEEL REAL. These actors truly make these characters feel like actual children speaking which makes the reveal at the end even more eerie. Props to you guys, you did excellent! We also can’t forget the amazing camera work, animation, composing and the writing aswell! Good job and thank you, everyone who worked on this project.

Actually no, it sounds very amateur, its not bad, not at all, but it has room for improvement.
The voices dont fit the characters a 100%, they obviously sound like older women doing young boys voices, and the acting needs a bit more expression, but its not bad, really.

Well, one important thing that everyone seems to miss is how the adults dealt with them, they just instinctively punished Lake without bothering to talk to him about his behavior or address his brothers smug attitude towards him or the constant tattling. That's lazy behavior, when some people become adults they just need to weasel themselves into a position of authority so that they never have to grow up, and throw their weight around just for kicks. Another thing is that Lucas thrived on his power over his brother to the point that it became an addiction, he constantly tormented him when they were alone, but he couldn't take even a minor sleight, and then his over confidence got the best of him and was proven misplaced. My brother did the same thing to me growing up, he was entitled to dish it out, but could never take it in, but I'm satisfied with getting my licks in so I'm not really motivated to get even.

@@twentyonetortas5921 Well not everyone, I got bullied both at school and at home, but my divorced dad that I barely got to see was probably the only person who kept me from ending it all, they got better but that doesn't excuse them from making my life a living hell. I did stuff to them every now and then, I think I felt bad for some of it but looking back on the entitlement issues on how they got to treat me I only feel regret for feeling bad.

The animation was well made! I don't completley blame Lake for his brothers death. Lake did not know his brother was abt to get hit, you can even see a hint of surprise at the car scene 3:10
I had always had a similar idea about twins like this where one (the loved one/favorite) dies and the other (the more trouble making or ignored) lives but takes their siblings place to either save their peers/parents from grief and/or to give themselves their siblings life. However, I never would have been able to execute it so well. I love the way it was portrayed here with minimal background context. All we needed to see was their behavior in school and the way each was treated. The posters at the end also gave huge chills because the real one missing is the "perfect" one while the one marked gone is sitting right there yet no one can tell. It also shows how superficial everyone was with both of them and how the twin who survived was willing to change his behavior to obtain his brother's life. The fact that a flyer was even put out though shows that both twins were loved but it is quite clear which was the favorite. This whole story is heartbreaking but a very good tale with a moral one can learn. One possible moral being don't be so critical of a person and compare them to someone else. Each individual is shaped in their own way. Another moral is also don't push somebody to the point they are willing to take somebody else's life (in this case impersonation). Also don't push your own insecurities onto others. Its clear both twins had their own issues. The "perfect" one wanted to be distinguished from his brother and wanted to be noticed in a positive light so he was willing to push his brother under the bus. This later became the end of him.

If you haven't heard of/played Martha is Dead, I highly recommend checking it out. It starts with the favorite twin dying and least favored is mistaken for her and just goes along with it.
To be honest, I feel like the teacher’s more of a villain. The teacher obviously saw how Lake was excluded and mocked by the other kids, and did nothing about it. For example, in the scene where Lake was pushed to the floor, she still marked Lake off even though he didn’t do anything wrong and other kids were laughing at him. She shouldn’t have let preferences get over her, and I hope she regrets it after Lake’s “disappearance”. The timestamp is a little bit after 0:50 but before 0:51

TBH, as a teacher, that really bugged me. It is not one TENTH as easy in real life as people think it is to deeply understand the social life of the classroom, but you generally DO get at least an idea of what the dynamics are. That teacher needed to get her head out of her ass and flip the script. Most teachers I know roll their eyes at serial tattle-tales, FWIW.

It's possible the purple in her dress represents how she has contributed, knowingly or not, to each boy's social image. She sees Lucas as the more well-behaved one so she trusts his word whenever he says Lake did something wrong. She sees Lake as a troublemaker so when Lucas calls him out she always punishes him, in front of everyone.
This animation was so good. "You wish you were me!" the amazing foreshadowing due to the car as well. I was surprised when i finally figured out Lake turned into Lucas. It looks like Lake got hit but it was really Lucas.
The other foreshadowing is the fact that in one of the car window's reflection you can only see Lucas
