Early northern soul! I used to listen to my brothers cassettes back in the late 1960s, this was on his personal soul cassette! He used to frequent The Torch, The Catacombs, The Hacienda and Blackpool Mecca in the early days! Think Hoagy Lands has a Similar voice to sam cooke! Love it! Always have always will! KTF!
thanks retep13 excellent track remembered dancing to this jewel at the palais Nott'm late 70's a proper floor filler long live our kinda of music 💯🎵🎶👏⭐⭐⭐🕺💃🕺🎼🎹🪕🎻🎸🎷🎺✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻
Listening to this makes my blood rush and spine chill. Something that has not happened since I played Northern Soul as a DJ in the early 70's. Wonderful.
The last time I was in the Ambassadors Club in Bradford, circa 1972, the Police raided it at about 3 in the morning - never forget they were playing Jackie Day's 'Before it's too late' at that precise moment!
One of the first records I heard played on Radio Luxembourg via the late DJ BA, Barry Alldis, when he came back to 208 in the autumn of 1975 when the record was reissued via Jonathan King's UK Records (USA 14).
That cant be the Ronnie Macari - the ice cream heir to the Macari Fortune? You gave me my first ever Northern Soul single and introduced me to the sound Ronnie. Our Ladies High School and the youth club on Sunday with Radio Doom and Phil Young? Jezz, if it is you Ronnie God bless and best wishes to you and yours from me and mine ;-)
I used to go to the Union Jack club with a girl called Diane from Wyke. We both worked at Debenhams in Bradford. She was a bit older than me and had gone to the Torch and she talked of knowing you. I went to Wigan from 75 onwards - although it went down the pan in 78 so I stopped going. Diane still goes to soul nights. I don't anymore. That said, I am going to the Central on August Bank Holiday with Sue Bushby and Donna Dent. Donna went to the Union Jack as you probably know.
Northern Soul emerged from the '60s "Rare Soul" (or "Rhythm & Soul") scene after the Wheel closed in 1971, although the term didn't really begin to catch on until c.1972.
takes me back to the Birdcage in Ashton, near Manchester circa 71/2, and the girls who would sing.. 'me legs feel fine' LOL. I have it somewhere on vinyl..
We used to go to the 'String of Beads' allnighters, used to buy records like this in the market above Rowson Street. Before that we used to go to the 'Spinning Disc' in Leeds on Saturday nights - great DJ there called Rick Vaughn!
pure classic Twisted Wheel side : without this Blackpool Mecca and the Ritz wouldn't have happened . I often say to Colin Curtis that all the great stuff he played at Rafters and Berlin ;and even now , wouldn't have taken place without this classic Soul . This sound commands my respect and not that betrayal that took place at Wi-gun Casino by the pop brigade - shame on you
redcoach so I finally see someone who went to the birdcage post on here . Grew up in Marple - went to the birdcage every week . Happy days . Now living in Manchester , Missouri USA .
I’m still trying to get over the fact that someone else went to the birdcage in Ashton . That place got packed every week and I to can remember this getting played. Thanks for posting KTF
@@manchesterredboy Used to go Birdcage Helsecar Barnsley on a Fri night, listening to northern tunes that would be played the night after at the Cats or torch
Can I just ask Dr Watson (stupid name) what music he was into before he ventured onto the soul scene. Was he never into anything else before. If not - he's making it up. What venue or when we went should not matter - but it obviously does to him. I will not tell him when I started going else he,ll have a go at me. But I am probably older and wiser (when it comes to the scene) than him. Silly man.
You are not older and certainly not wiser, I can tell you that I know him personally…his knowledge is incredible and he’s actually a real good guy…. He doesn’t tolerate untruths or injustice…..he says it as it is.. I’ve known him from the cats and the Mecca days….
@herringthorpe No. I happen to know Pep and most of the other DJs of the time pretty well. I never saw a single DJ who dressed like the punters in all my time on the scene. Name one.
@herringthorpe Like I said, I knew most of the Northern DJs in the North and Midlands, some better than others. Despite your previous assumptions however, I rarely spoke to Ian Levine, except maybe to request a particular record. My interest was and remains the quality of Soul music played at a venue, not with the personalities involved.
More nonsense. There's a WORLD of time between "Let's All Chant" (1977), and the period when Wigan initially sold the NS scene down the river (1974) Nobody EVER claimed Disco tunes were anything but that, however the Wiganite fraternity still insisted the Casino was at "The Heart of Soul" when it was evidently filling up with kids who had been into the Bay City Rollers just a few weeks earlier - and basically still were! Unfortunately, they became the majority, as the older Soul fans moved on.
herringthorpe appears to be utterly, even morbidly, obsessed with his "gays" - He calls the Mecca (and by extension the Ritz etc.) "a gay pantomime", whereas at Wigan the guys were all dancing together, stripped to the waist and covered in tattoos with cheap bar towels tucked in their ludicrously baggy trousers! - Just how camp is that? haha! (Not to mention tacky and downright COMMON...)
60’s Manchester soul will never die so many soul clubs back then, brilliant
This is in my top 3 ..belters ..crackin choons ..proper dance choons ..ktf
