It’s interesting to slowly see their relationship as friends break down over time. Eventually Wilbur doesn’t even wanna fight, yet Schlatt has gone insane, and no longer sees him as a friend, only as an obstacle. He kills Wilbur, and after falls even further into madness being the only one left.

He survived, but you can't call it living.

I really like the character development on Schlatt.
Personally, I would’ve never predicted that a stubbornly independent business man would slowly fall into the depths of schizophrenia, plagued by the false belief that his ally is predestined to destroy him and his company, assuming the role of the series’ villain. It really portrays the theme of how undetected mental illness can become the downfall of a person’s relationship, turning a once charismatic character into a cunning paranoiac hellbent on outliving their peers.
Really good writing, Carson.
