    Hey, good video, we have always used paper tape, I'm a professional plasterer painter. Here's our taping method. Butts, Factory Edges, Corners! It makes the taping job really neat. We also use a mud box, it applies the mud to the tape for us! We also manually apply at times!

    Great instructional video as always. Started to watch your instructional videos as I plan on starting my house renovations this July, by gutting my kitchen, Your explanation on how to hold the knife made lots of sense.

    Thanks Dominic for producing this. I'm a office worker with few skills with my hands. I would recommend your videos as you actually explain all the details well enough to give people a fighting chance their own.
    I watched a few other vids on this topic, armed myself with tools and tape and completed the 1st layer on the recesses of the center walls of a few rooms and a nasty big ass butt joint. Recesses will need a scrape and light sand, however the butt joint is a total mess. Anyways,,, feeling more confident with the second layer now after watching this a few times. But first i'm off to do some sanding.(Forever)

    Dominick you are awesome! I love your comedy mixed in with your work. You have me learning things and laughing my butt off, not to be confused with the butt joint! I think you should give seminars onstage, this world needs to laugh more, not to mention learning simultaneously! I look forward to watching more of your videos, keep them coming. God Bless!

    On butt joints, I have used a razor knife to remove enough of the paper on the Sheetrock so the tape lays flat eliminating the need to make such a wide amount of Spackle. Just my two cents. ;-)

      No a good idea. The paper is what adds the strength to Sheetrock.

    Wetting the tape also helps for it to stick in the mud too.

    You ALWAYS have to do the butt joint first and you over lap it with the horizontal tape on top , you didnt do thisin this video and it will cause a crack where it's split!! Your 2nd coat goes on with a wider blade then the 6" one you used to tape with and you should use Topping Mud for 2nd coat Not Joint compound !! Just say-in !!

  • @slycat8892

    Ok. Your style works but one complaint. I have always and also taught my apprentices to always start in the middle of the joint wiping it down. Go from middle to end then from middle again to other end. That way you dont have to worry about wrinkles or holding the tape down with your fingers..

    Thanks for this video. Always have a tough time making these joints look right on the ceiling. Bedroom light fixture has a butt joint running away from it towards the outer-wall. Every time I read in bed, I've got this 6 foot long, 4 inch wide, cake frosting looking, shiny high spot staring me in the face. Distracts me from reading and drives me nuts. My wife thinks I'm crazy since she can't really see it, but it's definitely there (maybe I am insane). Anyway, hoping the tape in this video and level 5 finish method will improve the look. If you have any tips for properly taping/finishing a ceiling, it might make an interesting video for the people who follow you. Just my two cents. Thanks again.

      Hey, that shinny spot on your ceiling comes from not being sanded properly when someone mudded your ceiling.

    I just bought 6 and 10 inch knifes (good makes) the 10 inch isn't dead straight, is this expected or is this defect? Thanks

    • @Askmediy
      @Askmediy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pete Holder Sorry for the delay. I was at the Straight Flex plant. Yes any knife should be 100% straight.

    • @michaelmunoz679
      @michaelmunoz679 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no 6" or 10" knife is perfectly straight anywhere. some drywallers use it either way. I use it differently depending if im taping or floating. some guys swear by a certain side. all pros use a light at a corner of the drywall to see the shadows of imperfections. A dark room with one light will shine where you need more mud or less. the light has to be close to the wall and at a corner.

    Nice job Dom. I couldn't find Butt Tape anywhere but Amazon and that was $30 a roll. I needed it now anyway. I'm guessin they stopped selling it at the Depot because of the price and the R rated language in the title. Good idea though.
