    In this video:
    In the city of Athens, Georgia there exists a rather curious local landmark- a large white oak that is almost universally stated to own itself. Because of this, it is considered one of the more famous trees in the world. So how did this tree come to own itself and the land around it, and does the government agree with the general public’s sentiment that it legally does?

    I helped monitor that tree in the ‘90’s as I got my Hort BS. It’s slammed between apartments on top of the hill about a block from the dorms. Thank you for this! And it’s binary, dioecious? Both male and female.

    • @Sylvicolus
      @Sylvicolus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oaks are "monoecious" meaning "one home" - the flowers are unisexual with separate male and female flowers are on the same tree. So it could be considered "bisexual" in a botanical sense, though you may prefer to use that for flowers that contain both sexes.

    • @timothyneiswander3151
      @timothyneiswander3151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Sylvicolus You both missed the mark. If it was bisexual, then it would be attracted to other trees of either sex. If it had that type of orientation, it would be considered autosexual. All of which is complete poppycock. Since it has both sexes it would be considered non-binary. Which takes the "attraction" out and just states its orientation. Native Americans refer to this as nadleeh or two spirited.
      Botanically speaking the term is monoecious. All the rest is human rubbish being imposed on a tree.

    • @custos3249
      @custos3249 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothyneiswander3151 Gotta love ending on "human rubbish" after spouting off to that exact end several times prior. But yeah, monoecious is correct. Thought hermaphroditic for a moment then realized their flowers can't produce both gametes.

    • @Sylvicolus
      @Sylvicolus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@timothyneiswander3151 I agreed with you that the correct term is monoecious. An oak tree can cross-pollinate with either male or female flowers of other oak individuals (sort of seems "bisexual" in a way). "Autosexual" does not apply because oaks very rarely self-pollinate with themselves. I agree that trying to apply any animal orientation terms to plant pollination behavior doesn't work well.

It was from one of the crew who found himself on a small body of land and I think it said something like " I am the last one alive. I want my parents to know what happened to me" the bodys of the crew were found on the island and wolves had eaten at the bodys or killed them. Lake superior never gives up her dead.

      You thought trees were immortal?

    • @otakuman706
      @otakuman706 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Very much depends on the species of the tree, as well as the location in which it's growing and the nutrition and whatnot available to it (obviously.)
      Some can go on for thousands of years, in 'perfect' situations, while others only flourish until they begin to produce offspring or some other trigger. Many of those that I know of that 'go' until they can reproduce may not die but may stop growing (at least in any healthy, 'proper' way,) and some begin to produce less healthy fruit/seeds/whatever.
      Afaik some other triggers can be if they 'sense' other trees, but this gets into how tree 'communicate' and it can be a chemical 'signal' from a fungal network tied into the roots, or things like variations in sunlight from possibly competing trees etc. There are a surprisingly large number of ways various plants 'communicate' for many different reasons.
      Anyway, just a quick bit of info off the top of my head so there is definitely better info available. Generally to get detailed, useful 'lifespans' you need to be talking about a specific family or other grouping.
      Interesting topic, I think it could be a good video for the channel, deep enough it could be a huge topic, but I think they could find a good middle ground of informative, but not overly detailed/lengthy.

      Laurel oaks used to be planted as street trees in much of Florida. They tend to mature in 50 years or less, and are usually dead before age 100. A few towns in Florida have lost lots of these planted trees due to old age...

      Having seen them, and other trees, dying at a (comparatively) 'young' age and then seeing/hearing about massive, 'ancient' Redwoods and the like.

    I can understand wishing that trees owned themselves to protect themselves from the whims of humans. At one time I had a home that had two huge trees in the front yard, a fir and a blue spruce. They shaded the house from the afternoon sun in summer and sheltered us from the winter storm winds. In the spring we watched birds make nests, and then the arrival of the hatchlings. When we moved I so wanted the new owner to see the beauty and usefulness of the trees, but a few weeks after the sale I drove by and there were only two stumps left. I went to my new home and cried. How could another person hate and devalue the trees I loved and enjoyed so much? Although it would seem the Banner was just creating an urban legend, I suspect that the story started with someone who did love that tree.

    I checked the address and saw it on google maps and the tree across from the tree that owns its self on the other side of the road is clearly the older offspring. They are identical except the tree on the other side is bigger by x2. Problem is that tree does not own itself and can not move to that spot to do so if it acquired its siblings property by right of law. Its an interesting case however it will go no where in the end financially

    • @nicholaslewis8594

      The parent of the tree that owned itself was probably on Native American land before colonists came in.

      if indigenous native tribes of the original, absorbed,or adopted, tribes of said native peoples that were originally present could petition the State of Georgia/ The U.S. to annex said flora's parcel of occupancy in question to the Native American nation's tribunal they could have success in giving an entity of the land its sole bearing of one's self. Talk to a Native American tribal law major , this is my extent of law that I propose to acknowledge.

    If you are interested in looking at more curious trees that are tourist attractions, you might want to check out Greensburg, Indiana, USA, where there is a tree growing out of the roof of the county courthouse. No, it isn't planted in the ground and stretches up through the building, the entire tree is somehow above the clock in the clock tower.

      People have left estates to pets already. There are some cats with fkin millions thanks to some rich folks dying.
      Afaik its generally put into a trust and used to provide for said animal- paying for housing, food, etc, as well as anything specified in the related will.
      ... Because a cat totally needs millions of dollars more than homeless/orphans/etc. Smh...
