cheers for this! Currently improving my note taking flow and Obsidian isn't as user friendly to get started with. Happy to see that there's a strong community behind it!
Thank you Curtis for making such a straightforward video on this topic. This is the only video out there, that explains all the steps clearly. Just to confirm, the first vault that you created in your documents folder was not in your iCloud right? As in, it was in a local documents folder on your mac, if I’m not wrong. Thanks
Very helpful! Thank you!

great video man!
Thanks

Oh, I have all kinds of problems with the sync. It works...most of the time which is, oddly, probably worse than not working at all.
Generate a note using the Periodic or Daily Note plug-in on your Mac then go over to your iPad (or iPhone) and hit the icon and see if it overwrites the existing note for you. I've been trying to figure this out forever - it happens, consistently, for some people, randomly for others and not at all for others still. Obsidian said it's a problem with iCloud, which I don't use.
I’ve never had that problem with sync. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen guess I’m lucky.
@@curtisgmchale It's driving me crazy trying to figure out. I would pay 3-5x as much for a sync that consistently worked because that's the only thing that's currently lacking from Obsidian.
Curious, Why use DEVONThink? Is it better than Obsidian for PDF's and such, or is it just how you organize things?
good question
So, I am a little confused about one thing. Let's say I'm using Obsidian on my iPhone and Macbook. I create vaults on both titled General. I then set up a remote vault to sync to, and I have both of them sync to this remote vault. Are the vaults on my macbook and iphone still stored locally, and then they just upload the newly added data into this remote vault, which my other device (iphone) uses to update the vault stored locally on it? I'm so confused by this whole program. lol
Yes they are stored locally and available offline.
I'm pretty sure I've installed and uninstalled obsidian at least 3 times by now as it's confusing. It looks too complex for whatever reason. The syncing is also confusing.
Fair enough. You can simply put your vault in an iCloud/Dropbox or other sync service folder and let that handle it. I’ve found them to not be fast enough so conflicts can happen, but they work if you take your time.
@@curtisgmchale I'll give iCloud a shot (Dropbox is not an option apparently). But I'll keep your comment in mind that it might cause some conflicts for not syncing fast enough. Thanks
I see Obsidian courses on a lot of TH-camrs videos. How long is your particular course in hours & minutes?
No idea and I’m not sure why the length of course would matter. If I did long intros with no information for each video then I could inflate the length and make it seem like it has more information than it does. I’d say, check out my Obsidian videos and see if you like them. They’re in a very similar style to my course.
@@curtisgmchale I’ve already checked out several of your videos and like them that’s why I’m considering your course over the others. I was just curious as to how long it runs because it’s 100 bucks , though to be fair all of these courses are about that price , I’m just trying to decide which one to get.
Says it’s 1 hour 41 minutes.
@@curtisgmchale Thank you
Ok I paid for the Sync service. How the hell do I connect to my nextcloud?
Sync is its own thing entirely and has nothing to do with NextCloud. You'd set up your own sync outside the Obsidian Sync service using nextcloud.
@@curtisgmchale Yep just figured that out. Everything works now. Wasted an entire day lol
Oy vey, lol, talk about unnecessary entropy, this is what Bruce Lee spoke about when he touted "Don't confuse the finger for the Moon".... all this ~using one app to facilitate another, accounts linked to accounts, trying to avoid purchases, Data encryption security / privacy, yada yada~...
...you (people in general) are confusing sync (finger) for convenience (moon), when all that is required to arrive at the same desired output, is a good old-fashioned wire ('input' pun intended)
Just plug in your phone for all of half a millisecond, copy your desktop Obsidian folder over to your phone in a blip, go about your day using mobile version anywhere, and just reverse this process when you want to pick up where you left off at home.
No need to have multiple apps, silly accounts, it's free and remove the discussion of Cyber security all together...what the hell is the problem, lol.
.... anything less than this understanding is to fall for the illusion that you need something that you in fact do not. Sophisticated procrastination is real, just use the damn dinosaur wire and move on...now what's for lunch? ;)
(and my vault is exactly 1,932,856 words as of this post, btw, in case anyone is going to try and say it's not practical, the folder transfers flawlessly every time, I thought when canvas came on scene it would slow it down, but nope, lol)
people sync multiple devices and sometimes use multiple devices at the same time. the solution you provide has an exponential problem of syncing manually all the devices among each other. you confuse doing one transfer manually (the finger) for syncing (the actual moon), and those are two different things.
@@fc978 yea "multiple devices" is an entirely different context altogether, for which my solution never claimed to be applicable.
@@justsayin2620 multiple devices -> that's what syncing is, Bruce Lee.
