I always throw my LDS a few extra bucks for taking the extra time with a fill. It’s a small gesture but I hope it lets them know I understand what goes on to make sure I get a quality fill with quality gas.

Due to lack of a LDS in my area I bought my own compressor Then I went off the deep end and got a Containment fill station and 4 storage bottles, built a NITROX stick and now I don't have to worry about getting a short fill from a dive shop. all for the low low cost of what I would have spent probably on fills for the rest of my life.

Hot fills were a fact of life in my diving career. Boats without fill tanks, dive shops with lines of tanks to fill...

somehow I ended up with 2 al 80, 2 steel hp 80, 1 lp 95, and two steel 40's and o2 deco tank. It's expensive to get them visually inspected every year and don't get me started on hydro testing every 5 years.

A buddy of mine got his certification to do his own visual inspections, the course pays its self off pretty quick if you have a lot of cylinders. As far as hydrotests take them directly to the fire extinguisher inspections places, that is where your dive shop sends them anyway. it is usally 30%-50% cheaper.

Crack the valve for a second or two just before getting a fill. Will blow out any water etc that may have lodged in the throat of the valve since reg removed.
Eg, have seen cylinders from first dive hit with heavy salt spray when in the tank rack on the return boat trip. And/or when rinsed with a hose the spray hitting the tank valve. Result is a couple of drops of water ready to be blown into the cylinder when filled.

#askmark regarding the filling and the tank getting hot.. is it ok to use water to cool it while being filled? is there a recommended way to cool it? or just leave it heat up?

What's your opinion on Refilling tanks in Water to keep them cool and minimise pressure loss once the cylinders cool down?
I've heard a few people argue that doing that leads to condensation inside the cylinder and ultimately, corrosion. I don't see how keeping the cylinders in a water tank during refilling can introduce more water molecules inside the cylinders... Besides, even if there is an initial condensation, once the cylinder reaches steady state, it would make no difference right?

The water temperature makes negligible impact on fill temp as the air coming from the compressor is hot AF. Water jackets are meant for containing tank explosions. I recall someone made a video about better fills with water jacket and it made no noticeable difference

Hey I am really confused as a 15 year old dive RI am looking at getting twin or sidemount mostly sidemount cus I don't belive I can Cary a dobbel 12 or 10 on my back and sidemount looks attraktive I know most people use sidemount and they say it's good because it's easy to fix problems and good bouancu

Also don’t show up on a Sunday morning free air shop dive five minutes before departure with an empty tank. It’s poor form.

don't be a fool and suck your tank empty unless you want to pay for a visual inspection , before the dive shop refills your tank @ $20 per visual !
