I used to mow the lawn at the rooster tail restaurant some years ago. I remember the seawall being bent and cracked at the sight of the impact. It's amazing to think that J.W. hit the wall going 70mph. A crash at that speed in a car is guaranteed to be fatal.
The boat lost the skid fin. At those speeds the prop overpowers the rudder, and with the hull on the water not in the water, the skid fin actually provides some bite into the water and gives the boat a pivot point. If you notice the boat just starts to turn just as it hits the pier, that is when the boat slowed enough to allow the rudder to move the hull without the skid fin. Another 100 feet and he would have prolly missed the pier, but that wasn't the case here.
The boat lost the skip fin, not the rudder. If it lost the rudder, it would've been able to turn like it did and the boat would have hit the docks where the crews were.
I remember Valleyfield 2007(?) when Villwock hit the rocks right in front of our camper... it was scary! I think he lost his rudder if I'm not mistaken...

With such a nice sunny day, I'm surprised they didn't just start the race about a half-hour later so the track could dry.
