I would be super excited about this one but without solo mode it's hard to justify. Hopefully they will bring out an expansion with solo after listening to your final thoughts. Thanks for the coverage.

Is solo mode that important for your purchase? I ask this from a pure marketability perspective.
If ever i want to play a game by myself I often just play it two or three-handed and get a lot of meta understanding out of that. I have tried lots of solo modes in the past and I have never enjoyed their labyrinthian 'IF statement' rulesets nor how they play differently to multiplayer rules. For me, i'd rather a production team spends more time on polish or individual player powers than spend important dev time on an automa? ymmv but I would like to hear the other perspective that feels so alien to myself. Thanks

This is straight in at my number 1 Essen pick of the year. Love the sound of the player power advancement, reminds me a little of the underrated Khora...

I was surprised to pull up the wrong game on BGG. There are two 2024 games called Beyond the Horizon. There have been name collisions before, of course, but haven't seen them happen in the same year!

      yeah a very unfortunately coincidence!

Yeah, that's unfortunate for everyone. I'm surprised that happened. I remember reading Jamey Stegmaier having a game in development with a title that conflicted with someone else's project with the same title. I don't remember how that resolved, but I think he ended up changing his title, but I thought it showed me claiming a game title is done far in advance.

BtS has great flavors but ultimately it felt that the best way to impact other players was on the very small, simplistic galaxy map. So it felt like a great crunchy single player game (the tech tree) combined with a mini simple war game. This looks like a much better multiplayer game than BtS.

While at first I was really hyped up about this game, having played Beyond the Sun a lot, the forced asymmetry I could really do without. Those didn't work in the original game and we'd always play without those. Also it really forces you to play in a certain way, again something that was amazing in Beyond the Sun without asymmetrical player powers - you could play your way. Overall the whole leaders and government type stuff reeks like Through the Ages and not in a good way.
It seems to me that Dennis saw a way to monetize his original, clever idea and now we'll soon have a pseudo-sequal of a board game that can't hold a candle to the original. I really do hope I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the other designers completely missed the point on what made the original game great. They simply added padding to every corner the game has, making it somewhat soulless.

I've backed Millennia on Kickstarter earlier this year and they look very similar in style so I'm going to see how that plays before I consider looking into BTH. I'd have been tempted otherwise.

The biggest problem I can see having with this is the fact that they unfortunately did away with the very easy to use cubes to represent population and/or unit strength, and now use those pillar-style pieces that you have to balance cardboard tokens on top of to represent the level of your pieces. I don't know if your version is final or not, but if not, they definitely need to make those pieces with an indention on the top to keep those tokens from wanting to fall off every time you move a piece. Terrible design.
Also, BTS did have variable player powers that unlocked as you upgraded your "company" in the advanced version, as well as variable board layouts for each company that made each feel unique, so that's not completely new to this iteration.
When they do ultimately make a solo version of this one, I hope it's better than the BTS one, because I personally hate that solo implementation. It was one of the reasons I bought the expansion and I was really disappointed that it was so bad. I want a solo version to give the same feelings as playing multiplayer, not be essentially a completely different game in the same system, which the BTS solo mode definitely felt like to me.

an indentation (or some other sytem) would have been nice. it could very much be a problem for gamers that don't have steady hands. i should have mentioned that in the video now that i think of it! :(

Yep, I saw a lot to like, but the little cardboard chit balanced on top of the pillar was an appalling change. I was hoping it wasn't final, but it's a little late in the game to change that now. I have to find a workaround if I get this because one of my gamer friends has cerebral palsy and this would not be playable for her as is.

I do like Beyond the Sun, but I appreciate the less attacky nature of this new version.
Also, I’m guessing they saved the solo mode and maybe that research variant for an expansion.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

in fact, i just saw a post on boardgamegeek today from one of the designers saying a solo mode is in the plans :)

@@rahdo Having a solo mode in the expansion creates a higher barrier to entry for solo-only gamers. But a solo mode takes time and resources. Maybe their data show that a solo mode and variants only make sense depending on the success of the base game.
I’m not a solo gamer myself, but I am more open to it these days. However, I’d want a solo mode that mimics the multiplayer game rather than creating almost a new variant. I’d probably strictly use a solo mode to help me learn the game so that I could teach the game to my game groups. Maybe I should wait for a sale and the expansion. If it were a kickstarter, I could wait for the reprint and big box :)
To be clear, I’m glad it’s not a kickstarter as I’ve gotten allergic to big boxes!

and yet I still enjoy the brinkmanship involved with players still able to march over to other player's found settlements and fortify them under their noses.

The symbology for active/inactive population isn't the worst, but it feels a lot easier to confuse than person/crate in BTS

Excited for this as i love BTS...oh how i wish the cards had nice thematic artwork...it would be one of my all time faves if cards weren't so dull. I was hopeful this would fix that...but nope! Still excited though. I can't find any pre order options for this...any ETA for Canada game stores?

I enjoyed BTS but this one looks much better. One BIG reason is they done away with the super small text on the tech cards. BTS was a nightmare to play from readability perspective. Finally we are getting icons, nice art aaaand I won’t miss the Galaxy board one bit. That are majority game felt underutilized or undercooked anyway
