  • My name is Tony Jeffries, Olympic Bronze medallist now co-owner of Box 'N Burn, 2 boxing fitness gyms in Los Angeles, as well as the Box 'N Burn Academy...this I sour education program where we teach trainers how to teach boxers (Link below) In this video, I am going to breakdown the jab.
The jab is the most important punch in boxing because it is a great tool to set up your other punches. You can set the other punches up by finding your range. You can set up punch when boxing with the jab. When I am punching my opponent he may use his hands to protect his face and that will give me the opportunity to land a punch on other parts of his body with the other arm.
The jab is also very good because it frustrates your opponent. With a solid jab, you can mess with your opponent's mind and hence frustrate them while they keep defending themselves. I remember, specifically when I was fighting a Croatian boxer in the EU semifinals, and I lost to him. The main reason I lost to him was that he set me up using his solid jab. I was focused on defending myself because I didn't want to be hit by his jab, and that messed with my mind. I always knew within the first few seconds of s fight if it was going to be an easy match or a tough one by whether I could land a jab or not.
The step jab is another type whereby you are on your toes as you jab. This jab keeps you alert and ready to punch and also to defend yourself.
With a solid jab, you have a higher chance of winning. Find what works for you, learn, and practice that jab because it is the best punch in boxing. It's the first punch you will learn, so you have to make sure you do it best.

Tony Jeffries from Sunderland in North East England. From the age of 10, Tony boxed at the highest level amateur and professional for 17 years, representing his country of England, around the world in 55 of my 106 fights. He is very honored and proud to have been team captain for England on many occasions and even for Great Britain a couple of times.
The highlight of Tony's career came in 2008 when he joined the very exclusive “Olympian” club. After beating the Belarusian, Dutch, Hungarian champions and the USA team captain Christopher Downs in his backyard in the World Championships, Tony qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games. I came home with a bronze medal after years of training solid. It was the happiest time of my life!
Tony turned pro after the Games having ten pro fights with nine wins, 5 KO's one draw and 0 loses
For the last three professional fights-from the end of 2010 and all of 2011-He trained in Los Angeles with world-renowned boxing trainer Tommy Brookes-for me, the best in the world!
At the end of 2011, Tony had surgery on both of his hands because of a hole and a tear in my knuckles. He tried all sorts of treatment to fix them, but the hands never fully recovered, and he had to retire from competing.
He was devastated that he couldn’t box competitively anymore, but the end of Tony's fighting career was the start of a new chapter in the then 27 year old's life. Now living in LA since January 2012; with the wife they both fell in love with this city straight away, so we decided to apply their green cards and move here.
They loving life in Santa Monica, Tony has set up two dream gyms -Box ’N Burn in Santa Monica and Brentwood-with the top trainer and businessman Kevan Watson. They’ve trained everyone from kids and total beginners to celebrities like Skylar Grey; also worked with the likes of UFC superstar Conor McGregor and legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.
Tony is a fully qualified advanced personal trainer and being in gyms all his life like Kevan and they made sure Box ’N Burn has all the best things from all those other gyms with none of the bad things.
Tony host's the Box ’N Life podcast, with Glenn “Six Figure” Holmes, trainer to the stars. They discuss anything and everything about boxing and life and have a good laugh doing it. They’ve also had great guests, including self-made billionaire Dan Pena, WBC cruiserweight champ and “Creed” star Tony Bellew and top Hollywood film producer Jason Clark.

Thanks for that video mate ! Come from a bodybuilding background and decided to completely switch to box. Began couple of days ago and taking it seriously. I throw more of power jabs and feels more natural for me. I think i will continue to practice to jab like that and get more speed

Hi Tony. Thank you for this video and others like it. Your channel looks awesome and will definitely be of great help to me.
I am white collar boxer. In my mid 30's. I've been training boxing on on off (due to injuries) for the past 2 years.
So far, I've trained in 3 different gyms. Tonight, one of the coaches that oversees my group pulled me aside after looking how I shadowbox during my warm-up.
He claimed that I'm throwing punches all wrong and started correcting me.
When I jab, I always rotate my hip at least a little to get more power into it - he claimed I shouldn't be doing that and insisted I throw my jabs from the shoulder, without moving my hips.
When I throw the lead hook, I put my rear foot's heel down and slightly twist my front foot to get as much rotation in my hips and thus more power into the hook - he told me to not twist my front foot at all. He said that "nobody uses that technique any more, just look at the top pro boxers".
I'm really confused. I've been taught these techniques at the 2 previous gyms I attended by all of the coaches there.
Without using my hips, my jab has little no power as I'm lacking upper body strength.
Tonight's session was really frustrating for me as jabbing from my hip has become muscle memory and now my coach insists I unlearn it.
I can see you're using your hips when you're jabbing.
Could my current coach be wrong?

dude don't wanna be disrespectful but if I were you I would literally ask the coach when was the last time he ever had a pro fight ? I understand people can have different styles when it comes to the jab but as tony said all depends if you need speed or power at the moment. Boxing is about using your hips. Without hips their is no boxing. I think he's teaching wing chun mate 😂😂😂 you are better off without him. A good coach will never ask you to change such habits unless the fundamentals are wrong and the hook is just ridiculous how are you supposed to even generate power without turning your lead foot. Look at all the top MMA fighter who are boxers and other boxers I don't even know wtf is he talking about 😂😂😂😂
PS- Boxing is all about shifting weights that's how you generate power, that's the beauty of the art if you don't twist your foot how are you gonna shift weight and generate power ? I think there's something wrong with your coach's head mate. One of the greatest left hooker of all time Roy Jones Jr watch how he throws his left hooks. Even same goes for Tony

Last week while doing Boxing training with my Wife I looked at her and said "Ok, let's take it to the next level"! She looked at me like "Oh Mother"! I played Bas Rutten boxing CD where you do what he calls out, we did 3 rounds shadow boxing, 3 minutes, 1 minute rest, she did well but was exhausted. I told her "Not so easy is it babe"?

I'm not sure if you ever read Jack Dempsey's championship fighting .He calls that drop stepping to add power into shot's, definitely a cool book and really insightful into oldschool boxing technique.

Another great video. Your story about how unpleasant it is to face a ramrod jab reminds me of Larry Holmes. I do not think that anyone enjoyed fighting Holmes.

Mr. Jeffries from what position is it more appropriate to throw the jab? Off the center line, on the center line or both? Especially when you are using lateral head movement side to side before and after your throwing your punches? Thank you

Think more from the weight transfer from the step off of the front foot than the back foot.
