Aalto is a typical finnish name. My grandparents neigbourgh was also there, fighting as many other finns, in the thällmann brigade as a finnish Company.
My grandfather was there. I'm Spanish. He was sargent in the republicane army. When I was a child he told me historys abaut de war and this batle. His best friend fallend there. He told me abaut de horror and de death. And he ever said 'Never, never, never more'
It was very moving. My father, Bill Susman, a Lincoln vet, died in 2003 - but not before helping to found the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. This song should be on the archives!
In 1990 I was at the corner of 23rd and 8th in Manhattan. A man was selling books on the street, which was not unusual, but they were all the same book, which was. It was called From Mississippi to Madrid. I asked if he was in the Battalion, and he said he was--the book was his autobiography. I bought one and he signed it. It was a good book. No passaran!
Those last two words were written in the Blood of Heroes. Even some of us young Sodbusters and Sojourners remember the price brave men and women paid, when they stood in the face of oppression.

respect to all of those who fell in the spanish civil war fighting against facism, wish the war was taught about more considering how significant it really was
At the very least, kept Spain out of WWII. Perhaps if the Spanish Civil War had ended in 37 or 38, the Nationalists would have been able to fight on behalf of their benefactor, and seize Gibraltar. Would have lost access to the Mediterranean at a critical time, especially with the Suez Canal an axis objective in 40-42.
I love this song but I particularly love this version. Absolutely awesome video as well. Great effort. I love Dave's songs and had the pleasure of playing a support slot at a gig of his here in Scotland about 14 years ago. Absolutely brilliant and I saw him the night before in Glasgow which was a completely different set list from the night before, each befitting to the venue and it's audience. This guy has some arsenal of songs. Keep them coming David. Great upload. Thanks 🇦🇴 ☠️
Merci mille fois, Thousands of thanks for sharing such a thrillig and marvellous song about people I admire so much. I spent real tears à listening to that song.
Hallo, es wirklich schade das dieser Teil der Geschichte heute vollkommen ausgeblendet wird, ist doch so aktuell. Mein Großvater war selber ein Spanienkämpfer. Vielleicht war das der einzige Krieg der gerecht war.?
For the record: the last Veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade has not died. The good news is that five survive to this day (Feb. 17, 2012). Furthermore, their spirit lives in all of those who continue their legacy of activism. From Georgia Wever of Activists Forever! Friends & Family of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
I’m a twenty-three year old anarchist, learning from Orwell’s account of the war. I just met two young communists, and all I can say is that we will never stop fighting.
I try to properly credit all of the public domain clips I use - but it seems like a loose loose - everyone hates it when I put them on at a reasonable pace to be read - and then if I dont do it at all that is it's own set of mistakes. any who - i put them in text and video - put a clip to Woody Guthrie in the description
o7 Glory to the fallen o7 My great great grandfather was a Founding member of the FOTLU a precursor to the AFL. And my great grandfather was in the George Washington Batallion. He sadly was never a Lincoln as he was discharged before the two Batallions merged. Thank you for the memorial.
Read MEN IN BATTLE, Alvah Bessie's 1939 memoir of his service in Spain. ... Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn covered the story as reporters, and then Hemingway wrote FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS about it. ... George Orwell's HOMAGE TO CATALONIA is about his experience as a volunteer in Spain, and he tells about the internal conflicts within Spanish Republic. ... Spain was betrayed by Franco, and used by Hitler, Mussolini, and finally Stalin. ... A sad tale. Seems Rovics did not know about D.E.D. Berg, apparently the actual last veteran of the Lincoln Battalion, who just died at the age of 100.
In the movie "Hans Beimler" (a german fighter), a black people jump during a attack in a trench and ask " were is the Lincoln Batalion", the german Fighter says: I dont't know, this is the Thälmann Batalion !" The black american fighter answer: " Thälmann Lincoln, it's the same! And united they start the attack against the spanish, italian and german fascists This is the spirit of the "International Brigades"!
There was an ugly side to this. The idealistic [many communist] young men who signed up came face-to -face with the brutality and self-serving attitude of the Party leaders who supervised them.
"The finest Communists I have known..." Now why do the bloodiest of tyrants always have the best music and posters? Hey Comrade Stalin, here comes history's dustbin!
@@kescowethtys Franco was not anywhere near the same league as Stalin, Hitler, Mao or Mao, so art on his side was not nearly as good as the art supporting International Communism which was supporting the Republican side.
My uncle, William Aalto, was in the Lincoln Brigade. Thanks for honoring the spirit with which they fought!
Aalto is a typical finnish name. My grandparents neigbourgh was also there, fighting as many other finns, in the thällmann brigade as a finnish Company.
Holy shit dude, your uncle was a bad ass.
He was a hero with finnish heritage!
Proportionately Scotland sent more volunteers than any other nation. We had a small population but many went, from the area i still live in yoday.
Never forget these men this Memorial Day.
They lost who gives a fuck
@Altoids Maximus the kings and the capitalists never left, there is still a long way to go.
Looks like the women have already been forgotten.. come on folks, do their memories justice too!
And it has happened... Feb 28, Del Berg died at 100 years. The tallest tree in the forest has fallen.
Rest in power!
They all stand tall still... we may not see them, but they are here with us. Always in our hearts!
Is still alive Geoffrey Servante Morrison, a british fighter of the XV Lincoln Batallion. He will be 100 aged in few weeks.

"Orwell's" (agent Blaire's) objectives, activities, and accounts in/of Spain are extremely suspect, to put it mildly.
