The "soft freedom" concept is very interesting. Here in Brazil there are laws that just don't stick. Sometimes that's for worse, but having a culture stronger than the state is something the anglosphere and western Europe seem to have lost and that's even worse.

@@asamanthinketh5847 In theory you must report everything to the government, get permission to do anything, and must pay taxes on everything you do.
In practice in most of the third world no one enforces this, and in the odd chance you meet someone from the government with a stick up their ass, you just slip them a $20, and send them on their way.

    • @Marco-ge5kl

@@asamanthinketh5847 It's pretty much what Andrew said: freedom that's not explicit by law. It probably manifests differently from country to country. For example, traffic laws say you must wear a helmet and have mirrors, lights and reflectors on a bicycle for it to be street legal, but nobody cares. The addage "Don't start shit, don't take shit" is also a good example. That video of a lady who called the cops on a dude for using a charcoal grill where he wasn't supposed to is a great counterexample, you don't involve the cops frivolously, bonus points if they tell you off when you do.

A problem with Canada is that the place is over run with bureaucratic Karen types who think the world should be run using checklists. The nice thing about south Korea is that there is/was a lot of stuff done under the table (not necessarily corruption but people can do things without fear of being arrested for minor infractions).

    • @veritasmenscounselling

This was actually a brilliant video. I grew up in Norway and hated it there, due to the nanny state and egalitarian culture. Moved to the US, and it was great for a while, but gradually became more socialist. Moved to the UK, then Mexico, then Colombia. The things that attracted me to each place gradually disappeared, not only due to more government control, but also due to too many other foreigners moving there and pushing up price levels. In Bulgaria, where I am now, I am not yet seeing any of this, apart from certain "expat hotspots" like Plovdiv. But I am prepared to move anywhere, in order to continue preserving my freedom.

I will go by myself if I have too (I'm Aussie so have to wait till borders open anyways), but it seems that no matter how much they complain about where Australia is going, they will find an excuse as to why it would be somehow worse overseas. Worse is when they also do what you said, they see one scarebait newspeice on some country overseas and act like that country is in total chaos, yet when the exact same things happen here it's brushed off as the fault of individuals and doesn't reflect on Australia. It's such a dumb mindset.

@@jbennison5672 Evan called it. Yep, if you're living in another country and paying taxes, you're still required to file taxes and pay US tax based on your income level regardless of where it came from. Additionally, you have to ensure you have the proper forms and etc and there can be some big headaches or the US will attempt to double tax you rather then give credit for the tax you paid in your current country.... it's the delta. So if you pay UAE 0%, but you're in a 34% bracket, you owe 34% to US. That's why it's such a big deal especially for business owners

Baby boomer, grew up in mid-west, joined military, moved to CA & haved loved the last 40 years of it. But now? These past 7-8 years? Not any more. I'm done looking over my shoulder whenever I get in my car. 3x my husband and I were arrested/car impounded/ jailed overnight & released the next day without ANY charges.
No expired tags, license, proof of insurance; no illegal contraband; no speeding; no running stop signs/red traffic lights; no illegal turns; no back talk; not even failing to wear seat belts; just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
In our last arrest we got a lawyer & sued for deprivation of rights /due process violation, etc,.
Six years later we're now in settlement with LA sherriff's dept. I am a disabled veteran with service-connected ptsd & I gotta get outta here ya'll.
P.S. When single never taken to jail for a minor traffic stop - got issued a ticket & allowed to go on my way and if I felt I didn't deserve it I would go to court and fight it - 50/50 success btw. Since I married (raised daughter to adulthood as a single mother) I can't count how many times I've been pulled over with my AA spouse and almost never cited. Ain't that something?

You don't even need to leave the US, to find a place where you'll be treated better. California for example is for all intents and purposes hell on Earth. Simply moving to a better state will net you a much higher quality of life.
Most of the people who are going to tell you that it doesn't matter where you live, you can always make the best of it, are people who have never left their parents home. They lack the capacity to move, and instead of fixing that they'd rather critique those with said capacity. If someone ever spends time hating on you, if anything pity them. That's time and energy they could spend on fixing their own lives, but instead they choose to waste it.

I kept hearing “advice” about Mexico having draconian pandemic mandates on par or more significant than the US or Canada. Guess what I found? “You do you.” The very social aspect of Mexican culture conflicted mightily with the idea of forcibly isolating yourself from your neighbors and community. One of the guys we were working with said to me “no matter what’s going on, there’s always time for football.” Geez, I found that refreshing.

I know at least 1 person that did that temporarily till he actually moved from one state to the other and the IRS cam after him in a big way. Tons of people are doing it that live in high tax states.
