Their first two albums in 2006 and 2007 were ENORMOUS in the U.K., not just in terms of success but cultural significance. The biggest explosion and impact since Oasis a decade before, and no one has come close since! Definitely react to those 👍
Every album is great in completely different ways. This album Alex wanted to make a very streamlined rock album with R&B production. So no other album sounds like this. My favorites are Humbug and Favourite Worst Nightmare. You can’t go wrong. Would love to see you listen to more.
If you want more experimental album of theirs try "Tranqulity base hotel & casino", their latest one. First two albums were more raw garage rock, Humbug is a bit stoner rock, similar to QOTSA (It was recorded with Josh), Suck it and see is really underrated and has some great ballads and nostalgic feel to it.
Definitly go back to their first album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" and go through their discography from there. Arctic Monkeys musical evolution is really something that should be experienced from the start!
The thing amazes me about arctic monkeys is how beautifully their songs are written. Even on their less catchy songs. Also, submarine is criminally underrated. Alex turner is a lyrical genius for real.
this album is so nostalgic to me. it came out my freshman year of high school and was so important to me for all of high school. when my senior year homecoming wouldn’t play any slow dance songs, me and my ex went out to the parking lot and slow-danced to no. 1 party anthem playing from my phone lol. anyways what a pleasant surprise i hope you want to dig even deeper into the band!!
The answer to everything is Alex Turner. Arctic monkeys have been my favourite band (and artist in general) for over two years and I just can't seem to get sick of them. I just can't stop listening to them I CANT STOP. For one week my favourite is Crying Lightning, the next it's American Sport, then it's Catapult with some cheeky Piledriver on the side. Throw in some Shadow Puppets and Submarine and I'm a happy gal. Guess I'm a simple woman.
Nah, their first album is the most rock to date. Sure, Favourite Worst Nightmare is very rock, but their first album was full on punk rock and I was very there for kt
The choir boy backing vocals come from Matt Helders and Nick O'Malley, the drummer and bassist respectively. They definitely add my favourite qualities to this album.
Interesting point about Arctic Monkeys being experimental - they actually are. But what they do is have a new theme, a new style, a new sub-genre for every album. SO every album is consistent, but the albums are all different. That said, there is a consistency there; it is clearly still the same band, and, if you listen to them in order, you can pick out things that they have grown bored off so are dropping, and things they are picking up or re-picking up and adding.
Whatever people say I am, that's what im not, their first album, absolutely defined a generation in the UK, released 17 years ago and not a single album has ever come close since, I didnt like their latest album, some people did but thats just me, their first album (Whatever people say I am, that's what im not) is one of those albums you must listen to before you die.
@@stephenoshaughnessy5717 FWN, for example, is considered by many to be even better that the debut. Humbug's another shout (maybe not better, but definitely close). I know it's a subjective matter, but give them another go. I'm almost certain you'll find they come closer than you thought.
@@Dani94Ultra I've listened to both and theyre both great albums, Humbug is my favourite of theirs its just that their debut album defined a generation in my eyes, as Oasis's "Definitely Maybe" had a decade earlier. Theyve made some great music since but something about the time and place it came out, how people were listening to them at the time with Walkman's and mp3 players just coming onto the scene, also I have to admit I maybe personally biased as I was just turning 17 at the time, in sixth form in school, first started going to see live bands, had my first real serious girlfriend at the time. I suppose when I say it defined a generation what I am saying is that it defined my generation and nothing really has come close for me but as you say it is subjective, maybe I should have specified I meant personally.
@@stephenoshaughnessy5717 That's fair. I guess what you were saying was that none of their other albums came close to defining a generation (unlike their debut), even though they're still great. I understand it now. I was 6 at the time and i'm portuguese so i didn't really live those years in the same way but from what i've heard and read, it must have been awesome... although i do still have my old and small mp3 player, hehe. Hope you treasure those memories.
All their albums are amazing, AM was the first one I listened too and it instantly made me low-key obssesd with there music. I recommend also listening too the album 'Humbug' ITS REALLY GOOD TRUST ME! ❤️
i gotta agree with you on this one. the lyrics and instrumentals in tranquility base hotel + casino are some of their best, most unique, and interesting. i feel like people don’t like it as much cause it’s not in their traditional rock sound, but once you get over the fact that it ain’t a rock album, then it becomes more enjoyable for how experimental and unique it is.
I loved this! AM is my favorite Arctic Monkeys album. Their albums are all so different that the “best” one is a matter of personal taste. A lot of fans, especially older ones, say their debut was the best, but it is my least favorite. I personally prefer their newer stuff because I love the smooth, vintage vibe. I would also suggest the Last Shadow Puppets’ album Everything You’ve Come To Expect. TLSP is the collaboration between Alex Turner and his friend and solo artist Miles Kane. It’s a really unique album with amazing lyricism, I’ve never heard anything like it.
I would love to erase Fireside from my brain so I can listen to it for the first time again. I love that song and feel like it's one of the most underrated on this album Personally I love this album even tho some fans treat it like trash, I mean yeah it was kinda commercial but they still released a good ass album, although TBHC is still my favorite
i think Humbug would make a good reaction, their first two are also amazing kinda garage rock albums, but you should also check out Alex's other band Last Shadow Puppets, i feel like you would really enjoy it
Alex turner to me is one of if not the best of our generation each album the way he changes his style as a musician and performer and kills it every single time for me he’s just one of those guys you can depend on to make a kick ass rock n roll song.
Great album, i recommend you first two albums, easy to listen and both great. It is amazing for me that Do I Wanna Know? is near TOP 100 most streamed songs on Spotify I think this band is getting the attention it truly deserves
Favorite Worst Nightmare is amazing and their newest album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is an experimental concept album and is also amazing. But honestly they do not have a bad album.
It’s cool that the albums title, AM, is a double entendre. It’s obviously the initials of the band, but it’s also representative of the theme of the album, early morning unrequited love.
I imagine you’d enjoy their latest album, Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino. It’s related to the AM album here. There’s a message and it knocks me out! Glad for the review Shelby! I listened all the way through too! Also The Last Shadow Puppets albums - True GEMS HIDDEN WITHIN 💎
I think it would be worth your time to take a listen to the discography by Radiohead. It’s so interesting to see how experimental the band gets and how they make arguably some of the best albums of all time.
If you want true rock you should try their first album, this is their most commercial but not their best. It's a bit like how you did the new abnormal for the strokes. Great albums but to understand the bands and their popularity you need to see their origins.
Mmm, also this album was the one that got the band some popularity in the US, and elsewhere. (Hence its big Spotify numbers) Bit of an outlier when compared to everything else as well. Glad you got something out of it Shelby!
I agree with this. I usually start with the “popular” one, but always want to go beyond/dig deeper into their music and see how groups evolved through time.
Humbug is another album you should check out from them! It's my favourite one from them, so I'm a bit biased. If you want lyrics to gawk, have a listen to it, I find the lyrics to be more interesting and fickle over AM for the most part. The instrumentals are more experimental and psychedelic, something akin to stoner rock with that "eerie cool vibe" you like. Also, the guy singing the vocals at the end of "Knee Socks" produced most of Humbug.
A review of all of their albums. Their first 3 albums are the best. Chronologically: "Whatever people say i am, thats what im not" (2006) "Favourite worst nightmare" (2007) "Humbug" (2009) Their 4th and 5th albums are arguably their worst work (which says a lot). Those would be "Suck it & see" (2011) and "AM" (2013). Their last 6th album is honestly a future masterpiece "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" (2018). 7th album is coming soon. Best to listen in chronological order to understand how the band grew and changed their sound. They also have amazing B-sides!
Maybe you can react "Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino" (2018). I see everyone recommend the first albums (which are fantastic), but I think their last album is very underrated. The album definitely needs more than one listen
Favorite Worst Nightmare in my opinion is by far their best album followed by Whatever people say i am, that's what I'm not. i would suggest following with one those two
Really would like to see you react to some of their older songs! But also to Alex's solo Mini Album (For the indie movie "Submarine") AND of course his second "band" A duo called TLSP (The last shadow puppets)
It’s been so long. 😭 I will say that you will definitely love Favourite worst nightmare album, one of the best, and had a big impact on the band. Thank you Shelby!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️
Whatever People Say I Am and Humbug and my favourites that I return to often. The other band that I wonder if you are thinking of is Alt-J perhaps? Also, I recommend Son Lux.
most recent TBH&C is a masterpiece - i really didnt get it for a couple listens and then blam it my second favourite album after AM.... Unnecessary to play the advertisement game yet still put out ridiculous music

Their first two albums in 2006 and 2007 were ENORMOUS in the U.K., not just in terms of success but cultural significance. The biggest explosion and impact since Oasis a decade before, and no one has come close since! Definitely react to those 👍
closest thing could be black country, new road, happening right now
What are you on? Radiohead were a much bigger explosion than Oasis.

i think AM is very underrated among the core fans because of the poppier sound it has, but it's a instant classic
I really think should listen to their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare!! It's probably their most rockish one to date
