    I recently had the need to fly from Dallas to Miami, and at the time, American Airlines was operating both the 777-200 and 777-300/ER on this route. Since I had already reviewed the -300/ER business class product several years ago, I figured that it would be smart to give the -200 a try.
    This is a full American Arlines 777-200 business class review, complete with commentary about how unexpectedly nice it was. I had no idea that the interiors of these 777-200s were so nice!
    Total flying time from Dallas to Miami was 2 hours and 59 minutes, and I enjoyed every minute of it in seat 4A. The aircraft registration was N758AN.

    The 777-300ER is considered the flagship for two reasons. It is it's largest aircraft and the only type in the fleet with international F class. There answered it for you. The J class seats are better on the 777-200 because the type went in for a reconfiguration after the 777-300ER was introduced so the product is older.

    Great video Scott! Totally agree about the 777-200's seat - it is definitely a cut above the -300's and is way more comfortable. PS: If you're quite fortunate you can fly MIA-LAX in Flagship First seats...AA is running a 77W on that route (at least in November!).

      I just did the LAX-MIA and MIA-LAX routes about a week ago as part of a work trip out to Puerto Rico. 777-300ER going out, 777-200 coming back, business class in both cases. The -200 is definitely the better seat. The only thing I can see making the -300ER the upgrade is the handful of Flagship First seats way up in the front. I'll probably be doing the same trip again in the next month or two and I'm hopeful I can get the upgrade to the Flagship First on one of those.

    We flew the 200, 300er, and 87, and I liked the 300 er for long haul when I need to sleep because if you’re a side sleeper, your legs usually hit the table on the 200 and 87. But besides that, they’re all really great aircraft a lot more spacious than the Polaris seats on United.

    Thank you for sharing this video, even though it's an older one, it remains valuable. I wanted to point out that the reason the 777-300ER (773) is considered the flagship aircraft for American Airlines is that it's the only one in their fleet equipped with an International First Class cabin (with 8 seats at the front). The 777-200ER (772) was initially planned to have the same Business Class seats as the 773, but due to licensing issues with Cathay Pacific (as the 773's Business Class seat was also used by them), American Airlines had to select a different seat. The original plan involved a ying-yang configuration, but those seats encountered many issues, particularly in terms of movement when the person behind you shifted-this could be quite bothersome, although the seats themselves were comfortable.
    In my opinion, the seats on the 773 are far superior. Your legs don’t have to go under the screen in a confined space, the seat is much wider, and it offers almost the same level of privacy, though they are a bit older. However, they are much more comfortable for sleeping.
    Regarding the "big seat belts," those are actually airbags. The issue stemmed from FAA certification, mainly due to timing. American Airlines had to quickly install new seats on the 772 after the licensing problems with the previous Safran Concept D seats (also found on the 787-8). They opted for the Collins Aerospace seats, but they weren’t yet certified for the 772. Somehow, the FAA’s solution was to require an airbag instead of the shoulder belt (go figure). These seats have become extremely popular nowadays, and they are indeed modern and very nice, although I find them a bit cramped, in my opinion.

      As an older person who can remember flying on 707's and DC8's, I personally would prefer an old style comfortable well padded First Class seat with good legroom and a more elaborate full hot meal service to pass the time on a 3 hour flight than one of these seats and a pre-packaged snack box. Realistically a full flat recline is not required for such a flight duration.

    I flew on an AA 777-300 back in 2013 from LHR-JFK (in Main Cabin Extra). I was connecting through LHR from Dubai on my way to Raleigh-Durham. AA had a non-stop from LHR-RDU at the time, but the connection time with my BA flight from DXB didn't work. I was a little disappointed I had to go through JFK but it was worth it to get the 777. The flight attendant said the plane had only been in service about a week and it even smelled like a new car. For my return flight I got the direct RDU-LHR flight on a 767 that was ready for the Smithsonian (quite a letdown after the brand new 777!).

    As a 35 year frontline airline employee I think I could solve some of your criticisms.
    1) Galley noise. Easy fix, remove the galleys and replace them with seats increasing the revenue for a while anyway. The lack of meal and drink service would help the bottom line as well.
    2) You are nibbling grapes and cheese hurtling thru space at 500mph like some kind of ancient god, in airconditioned and pressurized comfort. Try a wicker chair on a Ford Trimotor with none of those comforts and at a greater adjusted cost basis than the flight in question.
    3) No comment on the Loo Revue other that thank Heavens you wore shoes. If you had any idea how many go in barefoot... Gross. P/S the old Ford Tri didn't have one.
    Nice job, good work.

Maybe it's a directive from HQ, but no beverage prior to take off bothers me (not even water or oj) given that it can take up to 45 mins to board. The 77W flagship came in 01/2013 to coincide with the rebrand and new livery. As for the seats, AA licensed the CX Cirrus seat due to development delays on the in-house designed Zodiac “Concept D” seat. (These are the seats on MOST 788s and half the 772ER fleet). They list to say, I am booked again for the same route and September, but I remembered to book an odd numbered seat to guarantee front facing regardless of interior! And totally agree with your DFW assessment. The terminal is awesome! Whenever I fly out of C terminal, I go to D, to hang out and grab some food if I’m early enough. I will say that they are slowly making improvements to the other draconian terminals, but they’ll never be the same as D.

    The reason why the 773 is considered “flagship” it’s because of its flagship first cabin for long haul. The AA 773 has 4 cabins Flagship First, Flagship business, premium economy and main cabin.. Flagship first on the 773 is sold as a business class seat for domestic travel the only exception would be if the 773 is flown JFK-LAX then you’ll get first class treatment instead of business because it’s a highly premium route just like AA 321T that AA deploys JFK-LAX, JFK-SFO. Points of information:
    It's a Trent/Rolls Royce Engine in the 777-2, not GE.
    The Flagship aircraft of the AA fleet are named such due to having a true First Class cabin (as well as Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes). There's two aircraft in this category, B777-3 and A321-T.
    The uncomfortable firehouse seatbelt is due to a (safety) airbag within it. How necessary that is ? IDK.

    Good video Scott. Whilst I agree that the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seat is indeed an excellent seat, it is not installed on all of AA's 777-200 fleet. There are a number of AA's 777-200s which still have Safran's concept D seat (formally Zodiac) which have proven to be extremely unpopular with business travellers. If you book a flight on one of AA's 777-200s, there is no way of knowing which seat type you'll get until you step on board

    Nice video. Just two points:
    - watch the safety video/demo, it's there so that everyone (including you) knows what and what not to do during an emergency. And please don't tell me you fly all the time and know it off by heart. Every plane is different.
    - with those seatbelts, airlines generally have to chose between an airbag (hence the bulky seatbelt) or a shoulder belt to wear during takeoff and landing (which some find uncomfortable)

  • @jjchan3559

    It looks like the exact same seat on Air Canada. The tray table is not full retractable and your leg and feet are literally trapped in the tiny space between the tray table and the bed in the lie-flat position. Your feet and legs can't move at all in the lie-flat position if you're a back sleeper. It's even worse if you're a side sleeper because that would be impossible. A real test should require the tester to actually try to fall asleep in the seat. I really hope AA will reconsider before converting their cabins to this kind of seat.

    Nice video. Curious why you did not access the AA lounge with your business class ticket? My wife and I pay for access to the lounges through an awards card. The card has paid for itself with the added accumulation of points. We are flying OKC to Paris and Munich to OKC in December, first/business class, on points. I booked a long enough layover in DFW to have time in the Flagship lounge. The return is through Charlotte, which has a nice lounge. The lounge experience really does beat hanging at the gate. We flew into Charlotte and out of Charleston, on points, a few weeks ago. Stopped into the lounge after disembarking for a clean restroom and snack. Totally could have used one in CHS for the hours long delay. We are on a 787-9 and then 777-200. Excited for the experience. 7th international trip, first in BC.

      @athlon9394 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johniii8147 I would imagine that most people who travel business class have an Amex Platinum or Sapphire Reserve. That said, it's a disgrace that the airline itself doesn't pony-up a lounge after a customer spends so much on business class.

    • @johniii8147
      @johniii8147 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@athlon9394 No it's not a disgrace. It's how the the US domestic market has always worked. It's domestic F not international business class ticket. AA lounges don't admit from Amex cards or Priority Pass. You'd have to be a high level Citibank customer that includes lounges access. In the US, DL is Amex, AA Citibank, and UA Chase. Now if he were connecting onto a South American destination in MIA he would have gotten lounge access in DFW as well as MIA by either a paid J class international ticket or high enough elite status. He didn't have either.
