I just got home after a chemo session where they botched the first IV attempt and busted a vein. I laid down as the exhaustion kicked in, bracing myself for 3 weeks of feeling awful. Then I got the notification for this, and instantly felt a little better. I am now laying down, listening to an excellent Warhammer 40k Lore video. Thank you.
My dad just went through the same thing with chemo and he just finished, but one of his legs has some form of paralysis and got very swollen (heard it attacks the nervous system too). And the doctors here are pretty indifferent towards the situation. Keep fighting. Despite the incompetence of others.

The fact the hobby mirrors the Imperium endlessly amuses me. Scouring endless "tomes" or "data stacks" looking for some obscure lore or rule like a scribe in the administratum. In the 5th edition main book a little quote suggests the terminator armour was originally what dark age of tech humans used to work on plasma or warp cores. Wonder what there actual armour was like, if they even needed it.
It says the same about Terminator armour being adapted from armour used for warp core maintenance in the Rulebook from 1st edition Space Hulk or one of the two expansions. Can't remember exactly which book though.
@@arg31ify thats the best bit about the grimdark of the 41st millennium, the poor refueling serf has to do die, (I mean do his solem duty) because the commanders are wearing "Terminator armour" as personel armour. Not only because they have forgotten its original use, but the idea of wasting such a precious resource on a serf, (I mean denying a menial the honour of serving the Emperor, in the Holy and solem duty of refueling a starship) is a waste and blasphemy, agaist the Emperor and the Omnisiah. And even if the Imperium found some kind of actual Golden age of technology armour/weapons the puritan Inquisitors would probaly destroy it, or the mechanicum or custodes would hide it away, because actual dark age tech is DEVASTATINGLY dangerous. Thats why Imperial armour is probably based off of technician haz suits, and a lot of Space marine vehicles are probably based off of colony/farming STC template data, retro fitted with weapons by the Imperium. Because actual golden/dark age weapons tech would be to much in the hands of anyone, especially after the age of strife and the heresy.
@@shaggybaggums yeah but the shoulder pads definitely look like some tech priest thought about giving terminators 3+ invunrable saves, but it gave them slow and purposeful, or made there move 3 inches 😂 the plain unimbelished indomutus pattern is probably closest to the original haz suites, as the Imperium got better at retro manufacturing them, although I would guess the crux terminatus has a less powerful field than the original haz suits, and still takes longer to create the suits. I do like the look of the "Mk 1" though, very rogue trader 😉
The Saturnyne Void Armor doesn't heal the wearer, rather it's just a fancy way of saying it's self sealing. After all the armor is designed for hazardous environments.
You'd think so, but no. This isn't a layer of rubber sealing itself, like we had in M2. The tech is M30 and literally too advanced to be reproduced. Which is why Guardsmen in M40 use flak jackets.
Saturnines were the very first Terminator models GW ever released. I thinky they were quickly phased out because they kinda looked too goofy (I mean, they looked like power armored Humpty Dumpty)
This massive, unique terminator armor heavily reminds me of the Obliterators. They have the same sort of shoulders-over-small-head, overloaded with heavy weapons visage.

A repeat-fire combi-volkite rifle would be amazingly effective. An initial volkite shot embrittles the armour, followed up by a volley of bolter rounds shattering it and eviserating the target underneath
Hell yeah. Based on the scaling between the two, I'd say the volkite could be underneath the bolter, and it'd be fairly simple to set them to the same trigger. The first shot in any burst is always a volkite blast followed by bolter rounds.
@@tarektechmarine8209 bruh I have an overcharged plasma gun on all my combi-bolters. I have some sprues with melta gun combi-bolters. A melta gun is a fusion reactor that is unshielded towards one side. If that isn't too hot, the space magic laser isn't too hot.

Honestly, that's actually a really good comparison. We have similar "tech decay" in the realm of computers too. Thinking about operating systems that have been lost to time, like the various Symbian versions, Palm OS, the early 8 bit OS for the Spectrum, Amstrad and Commodore. Even NASA has similar issues with programmers being called out of retirement to help debug code on early satellite s.
Yeah but we could just go online or to a library and teach ourselves how to work a tape machine in afew hours. The imperiums problem is not only have they forgotten, its their ignorant fear of remembering. They kill, burn and supress anyone or anything that would remember or recreate because their afraid of what might happen.

All the records from the dark ages were destroyed, much like if an apoc happened and the internet disappeared and every hard drive broke after a few centuries. It's back to square one and functioning computers have become extremely rare after thousands of years of post apocalyptic "age of strife"
So every time they find a working computer with blueprints for space guns inside they duty fully copy it exactly. That way the mechanicum can produce the guns without even understanding how it works. And that's the case of most 40k tech. They produce them without knowing how they work, because they have the blueprint for it but not the theory leading to their working. And having the blueprint for extremely advanced tech is better for the Imperium than speculative science at this point, because that means starting from square one more or less. And so when they lose STCs they are lost. They can't rebuild the tech from scratch. It explains the whole mechanicum behaviour.

@Luetin09 there was an example of "lost technology" I can share with you right now: I worked for an automotive company that produces some dedicated thermal-Devices. Some of the shapes and especially ratios are still there, but people don't understand anymore why they where done that way. The original designers died long ago and there are no research papers readily available.
That Mk 1 Saturnine "Pattern" looks strikingly similar to the aliens at the beginning of the Fifth Element movie. Those rounded shoulder pauldrons is probably why it looks so similar.
I do hope you are backing up all your work with what has been going on in GW, which itself has fallen into state of decay and stagnation. Great video as always.
The most amusing fact about 40k is that this Imperium would make superb villain in any other storyline. Phobic of nearly everything, pseudo religious with an untamed Inquisition, technologically failing and not caring for the fate of Billions working for the Imperium. If there had been anything better you would most likely call for war on the Imperium of Men. And still this setting works because it has so many faults that everyone can see where to improve it to save humanity.
Honestly, the "Saturnine" suit looks A LOT like a terminator suit for Lion El Johnson's non Astartes that joined him on crusade (Luther would have a terminator suit, and when you see the non Astartes power armor they possessed, this Saturnine armor looks like the terminator version)
I always thought this was stupid in the specific case of the Baneblade. Ie Terminator armor the whole "AND this was just the MINING ARMOR" to give you an idea of the power scale works and is entertaining. But a scout tank is supposed to perform a specific role. A primaris repulsor is highly mobile, doesn't use tracks, is fairly light, can mount sufficient armament for probing attacks and can carry a contingent of foot scouts. It's superior in the role of armor scout in every way to the Baneblade. While I'm sure it's lighter armored and smaller then the implied monster tanks of the dark age, it is too big and unwieldy to effectively perform its given role, it's heavy and has treads. Like it's a dog shit scout vehicle IN 40k times so how in anyway would it be better in the dark age? As a hyperbole as "their light tank is our super heavy tank" just doesn't seem to work for me. Sorry boys that rant got away on me.

You are forgetting that the dusk raiders (death guard) used nearly exclusively cataphractii terminator armours, and the death guard still does (both for blightlords and deathshroud terminators). They are also very distinct rules wise, they get a 4+ invulnerable, and 4" movement and half advance rolls.

Vulkanine armour? Vulkanite? Ooh! Vulka-knight armour! Excellent video, if the Emperor wakes I want him to give Cawl explicit, public approval and support. This could lead to the reintegration of the Cawl Inferior, and either advancement or obliteration.
Loved this video (along with all the rest). One of the pieces I love most about 40k lore is the whole "forgotten tech" angle. I loved the mid-vid callout about real world examples, and think a video on the subject could be helpful for drawing parallels. Ironically, the Saturn 5 Rocketdyne F-1 Engine (Saturn-dyne?) would be an excellent example of this. We simply cannot make this engine any longer even though we possess explicitly detailed instructions on how to do so.
If I recall (this is way back in the early 90s), I remember when this old "saturnine" terminator armor first came out in a white dwarf, it was just called terminator armor. There was obviously no designation or any fancy titles for it. I distinctly remember reading about it as armor that was used in hazardous environment, it was a suit more designed for deep core drilling or radiation filled environments. It was never designed for warfare until they applied armor plating to it. Basically, it was a machine built and designed for construction work. It was the squats that helped designed it. The squats were the first to design "terminator armor". Bet you won't find that information anymore since GW decided to wipe the squats from the universe. Ah, I still remember hit and run Squat Trikes....I miss those lil'buggers.

I always thought that I read somewhere that Terminator Armour was adapted from suits used to mine asteroids and work on ships and was designed initially to be powerful enough to resist micro meteorite strikes. Is that just me?
"Mk1" probably refers to the fact that out if the 3 OG terminator suits, the "egg" Terminator armor is the only one that hasn't had any sort of revival or recreation. "Saturnine" is probably because it's mentioned once and not really described, and because there's so little information behind the "egg" terminator armor.

Probably the best content creator TH-cam has, period. The quality is astounding, detail is amazing, and even the more obscure topics from Warhammer lore which don't interest me, luetin makes captivating. The emperor salutes you sir.
This armor design forces you to look only in front of you, you can't look behind and only look on sides with a limited angle. You can charge forward, oblivious to anything but what is in front of you. I see it as an absolute win !
Venerable dreadnoughts marching with the Emperor have been mentioned few sentences later. They're borderline dead and not totaly Space marines anymore. :-)

Notice me, Loremaster senpai. "exo" = Executive Officer. Not exo-skeletal armor. I am new to Warhammer, but I have experience in many other places. I am really into conceptual design. So, "why are you so sure it's executive officer?" Because you would want your exo to be the one in the heaviest armor (bunker if we think modern times), to be the untouchable one who has the experience, and has proved it by climbing the ranks. Now, you can't always do this, but if you have time to prepare, you fortify defenses around your exo. they will be the one in communciation, and they will be the ones telling you how to survive once the shit hits the fan. It just seems redundant in a universe that has "exoskeletal armor" EVERYWHERE to notate anything with "exo"...and not be refering to the Executive Officer. In the military, the executive officer is just simply, "an officer with exectuvei power". This just means, "that's the guy we take orders from during this battle." This keeps troops organized, and it also makes sure that other officers and higher ranking officials can't use and abuse your platoon or squad. If you were appointed an exo, you have mission control, and any deviation from the mission plan has to go through the chain of command... To further illustrate, pretend you are in vietnam. Your platoon is pinned down, and you are a low rank, but still your unit's exo. You can litterally be a private and be an exo at the same time. IF, another platoon calls and gives you an order, but you have already been given mission orders, IF that platoon's command is not the same command that appointed you exo, you do not have to listen to them. In fact, listening to them could see you court marshaled. You are basically "first mate". While the captains around, you aint' shit, while YOUR captain is gone, unless they are dead, you're top dog and everyone has to take their orders from you. If they are dead, there is no clear rules for that. The military does this on purpose, "ambiguous strategy." Mission control will appoint your new CO. IF mission control does not for whatever reason appoint a new CO. Let's say, mission control got taken out...you are on your own, listen to another CO, don't...just don't go AWOL or charge your men into a meat grinder.... That's true for any scenario when mission control is MIA. Hope that all made sense, I wanted tos hare my heretical knowledge of military matters. "There goes Fred again...he noted this one with ast...must be an Astartes.." *_Really, Fred has military experience, and he's telling you 'this is the armor the Aquisition Support Team should be wearing.'_*
I always had my own head-canon that the Saturnine armor was just an exo suit used in maintaining reactors around Saturn’s space bases. Then at the end of the crusades, with the need of updated armor for space marines, the forces of Saturn reached into existing designs to create their patterns. I view it as the saturnine pattern just being more of a test platform that survives through basic systems of other more advanced suits.

In case anyone needs an example of humans not remembering past technological achievement, pyramids, antikythera mechanism, greek fire and it is recorded but most people don't know civil war subs and the fact that they were the first to sink a ship. Also more commonly known is microwaves are failed radar so some good modern obscure references fading out of history as well.
being an old fart I remember these when they were sold originally, and I still have 2 of them, I also have one each of the other two exo designs they did at the same time, but there is little to no mention of these. Why has this pattern been so well remembered and the others not. Strange but all is strange in the 41st Millennium
About the only real examples of true losstech are Damascus Steel and Greek Fire, both of which have been well surpassed by crucible steel (we still can't replicate the look but that's about it) and Napalm (we're pretty sure we found the real recipe but until someone explicitly finds it in a Byzantine manuscript we won't know for sure).
@@josephwang8589 there are blades in museums that are Damascus steel I've seen them. Sometimes pattern welded blades are incorrectly referred to as Damascus because they have a similar appearance but actual Damascus steel examples exist.
I like to imagine the eggy boyz as the pre-imperium, hazardous work suits with heavy weapons bolted on. Might get some of the monkey resin ones and some Dirty Down rust paint and run them as Relic Terminators in my DA Deathwing.
I love warhammer fluff, and Luetin does a great job of writing in the analytical/hyperbolic style I remember from codexes etc. Now I get my fluff without buying plastic crack! Thanks for keeping me on the wagon, Luetin!
I love this piece. The early miniature designs are fun. I know that you are only addressing the nomenclature and the in world cannon of the first mini and I wholeheartedly agree with your ending conclusions and thoughts. The early days of the Terminator models were a time of wild experimentation. I especially love the bit of lore you found that could possibly make this pattern of armor cannon. The only bit I disagree with is your statement that it was never called “Terminator” armor but rather just Exo-armor. ( huge nerd warning ) In December of 1988 White Dwarf #108 featured on page 28 a catalogue with this first pattern ( mini #410609 ) on it labeled “Terminator Marine”. So from the beginning this and the other two experimental patterns were always called Terminator Armor and is followed up in WD 109 and 110. I hope this was not over the top. Subscribing as I love the in-depth work you have done. Made me a fan.

If I remember correctly, Volkite weaponry was originally intended to be the _standard issue_ weapon of the bog-standard Imperial Trooper during the Great Crusade, but the manufactorums simply couldn't produce them fast enough and in enough numbers to arm _trillions_ of soldiers. In the _early_ stages of the Crusade, _everyone_ had a Volkite weapon issued to them; there weren't enough soldiers for supply to be an issue yet. Las-weapons took over fairly quickly because they are _far_ easier to mass produce while still being reasonably effective against _most_ hostile targets. Curiously, Volkite weapons actually have a Xenos analogue of sorts: Necron Gauss weapons. If you look at what Volkite weapons actually do, you may notice that they are basically primitive precursors to the same technology as Gauss Flayers; they do the same thing, essentially, with similar visuals, except that the Volkite weapons do it more slowly and with less power.
I remember when these were released just after first edition space hulk. They were described as prototype terminators and there was another bulkier multi part model also called prototype terminator armour. I used to have a squad of those.
I've taken to calling the Egg Terminator suits "Dominator-pattern" because of their (no doubt intentional) resemblance to the Dominators from Doctor Who.

I have played about 4 warhammer games in my lifetime. I have never touched the board games or read the books. I knew just the basics about lore of the universe. I normally agree with Luetin but regarding the Saturnine armor, he didn't do a very good job of looking into it. Saturnine Armor comes from the old Rogue Trader era. It was labeled as ''SP104 Mark 1'' S: Saturnine P: Pattern 104: Blueprint number (Pretty meaningless other than telling us this the 104th blueprint for this armor) Mark 1: First iteration (Not to be confused with 104, Mark 1 stands for first produced, not first drawn up) Which turns into, Saturnine Terminator Armor Mark 1. And to be fair, the original was also named ''Terminator Marine'' but you had to look at the back of the box to find out the details. Edit: Oh and just to prove how old that model is: They used to sell them for 1.25euros.... Imagine a model of that scale today, they'd be selling it for no less than 80$

And yet in the 41st millennium people just get sent into melt when the warp reactor needs refueling (as per lotions worst job video)

@@arg31ify thats the best bit about the grimdark of the 41st millennium, the poor refueling serf has to do die, (I mean do his solem duty) because the commanders are wearing "Terminator armour" as personel armour. Not only because they have forgotten its original use, but the idea of wasting such a precious resource on a serf, (I mean denying a menial the honour of serving the Emperor, in the Holy and solem duty of refueling a starship) is a waste and blasphemy, agaist the Emperor and the Omnisiah. And even if the Imperium found some kind of actual Golden age of technology armour/weapons the puritan Inquisitors would probaly destroy it, or the mechanicum or custodes would hide it away, because actual dark age tech is DEVASTATINGLY dangerous. Thats why Imperial armour is probably based off of technician haz suits, and a lot of Space marine vehicles are probably based off of colony/farming STC template data, retro fitted with weapons by the Imperium. Because actual golden/dark age weapons tech would be to much in the hands of anyone, especially after the age of strife and the heresy.

The Saturnyne Void Armor doesn't heal the wearer, rather it's just a fancy way of saying it's self sealing. After all the armor is designed for hazardous environments.

You'd think so, but no. This isn't a layer of rubber sealing itself, like we had in M2. The tech is M30 and literally too advanced to be reproduced. Which is why Guardsmen in M40 use flak jackets.

A repeat-fire combi-volkite rifle would be amazingly effective. An initial volkite shot embrittles the armour, followed up by a volley of bolter rounds shattering it and eviserating the target underneath
Hell yeah. Based on the scaling between the two, I'd say the volkite could be underneath the bolter, and it'd be fairly simple to set them to the same trigger. The first shot in any burst is always a volkite blast followed by bolter rounds.

Honestly, that's actually a really good comparison. We have similar "tech decay" in the realm of computers too. Thinking about operating systems that have been lost to time, like the various Symbian versions, Palm OS, the early 8 bit OS for the Spectrum, Amstrad and Commodore. Even NASA has similar issues with programmers being called out of retirement to help debug code on early satellite s.

They kill, burn and supress anyone or anything that would remember or recreate because their afraid of what might happen.

All the records from the dark ages were destroyed, much like if an apoc happened and the internet disappeared and every hard drive broke after a few centuries. It's back to square one and functioning computers have become extremely rare after thousands of years of post apocalyptic "age of strife"
So every time they find a working computer with blueprints for space guns inside they duty fully copy it exactly. That way the mechanicum can produce the guns without even understanding how it works.
And that's the case of most 40k tech. They produce them without knowing how they work, because they have the blueprint for it but not the theory leading to their working.
And having the blueprint for extremely advanced tech is better for the Imperium than speculative science at this point, because that means starting from square one more or less.
And so when they lose STCs they are lost. They can't rebuild the tech from scratch. It explains the whole mechanicum behaviour.
That's what most fans call "dogma" but it's actually taken from Louis Pauwels' book "Morning of the Magicians", did you read it ? Because GW did.

@Luetin09 there was an example of "lost technology" I can share with you right now: I worked for an automotive company that produces some dedicated thermal-Devices. Some of the shapes and especially ratios are still there, but people don't understand anymore why they where done that way. The original designers died long ago and there are no research papers readily available.
That Mk 1 Saturnine "Pattern" looks strikingly similar to the aliens at the beginning of the Fifth Element movie. Those rounded shoulder pauldrons is probably why it looks so similar.

The most amusing fact about 40k is that this Imperium would make superb villain in any other storyline. Phobic of nearly everything, pseudo religious with an untamed Inquisition, technologically failing and not caring for the fate of Billions working for the Imperium. And still this setting works because it has so many faults that everyone can see where to improve it to save humanity.
Honestly, the "Saturnine" suit looks A LOT like a terminator suit for Lion El Johnson's non Astartes that joined him on crusade (Luther would have a terminator suit, and when you see the non Astartes power armor they possessed, this Saturnine armor looks like the terminator version)
The official artwork I've seen of Luther has him in standard power armor, not Terminator armor.

I always thought this was stupid in the specific case of the Baneblade. Ie Terminator armor the whole "AND this was just the MINING ARMOR" to give you an idea of the power scale works and is entertaining.
But a scout tank is supposed to perform a specific role. A primaris repulsor is highly mobile, doesn't use tracks, is fairly light, can mount sufficient armament for probing attacks and can carry a contingent of foot scouts. It's superior in the role of armor scout in every way to the Baneblade. While I'm sure it's lighter armored and smaller then the implied monster tanks of the dark age, it is too big and unwieldy to effectively perform its given role, it's heavy and has treads. Like it's a dog shit scout vehicle IN 40k times so how in anyway would it be better in the dark age? As a hyperbole as "their light tank is our super heavy tank" just doesn't seem to work for me.

You are forgetting that the dusk raiders (death guard) used nearly exclusively cataphractii terminator armours, and the death guard still does (both for blightlords and deathshroud terminators). They are also very distinct rules wise, they get a 4+ invulnerable, and 4" movement and half advance rolls.

Loved this video (along with all the rest). One of the pieces I love most about 40k lore is the whole "forgotten tech" angle. I loved the mid-vid callout about real world examples, and think a video on the subject could be helpful for drawing parallels. Ironically, the Saturn 5 Rocketdyne F-1 Engine (Saturn-dyne?) would be an excellent example of this. We simply cannot make this engine any longer even though we possess explicitly detailed instructions on how to do so.
If I recall (this is way back in the early 90s), I remember when this old "saturnine" terminator armor first came out in a white dwarf, it was just called terminator armor. There was obviously no designation or any fancy titles for it. I distinctly remember reading about it as armor that was used in hazardous environment, it was a suit more designed for deep core drilling or radiation filled environments. It was never designed for warfare until they applied armor plating to it. Basically, it was a machine built and designed for construction work.
It was the squats that helped designed it. The squats were the first to design "terminator armor". Bet you won't find that information anymore since GW decided to wipe the squats from the universe.

"Saturnine" is probably because it's mentioned once and not really described, and because there's so little information behind the "egg" terminator armor.

This armor design forces you to look only in front of you, you can't look behind and only look on sides with a limited angle. You can charge forward, oblivious to anything but what is in front of you. I see it as an absolute win !

I am new to Warhammer, but I have experience in many other places. I am really into conceptual design.
So, "why are you so sure it's executive officer?"
Because you would want your exo to be the one in the heaviest armor (bunker if we think modern times), to be the untouchable one who has the experience, and has proved it by climbing the ranks. Now, you can't always do this, but if you have time to prepare, you fortify defenses around your exo. they will be the one in communciation, and they will be the ones telling you how to survive once the shit hits the fan.
It just seems redundant in a universe that has "exoskeletal armor" EVERYWHERE to notate anything with "exo"...and not be refering to the Executive Officer. In the military, the executive officer is just simply, "an officer with exectuvei power". This just means, "that's the guy we take orders from during this battle."
This keeps troops organized, and it also makes sure that other officers and higher ranking officials can't use and abuse your platoon or squad. If you were appointed an exo, you have mission control, and any deviation from the mission plan has to go through the chain of command...
To further illustrate, pretend you are in vietnam. Your platoon is pinned down, and you are a low rank, but still your unit's exo. You can litterally be a private and be an exo at the same time. IF, another platoon calls and gives you an order, but you have already been given mission orders, IF that platoon's command is not the same command that appointed you exo, you do not have to listen to them. In fact, listening to them could see you court marshaled. You are basically "first mate". While the captains around, you aint' shit, while YOUR captain is gone, unless they are dead, you're top dog and everyone has to take their orders from you.
If they are dead, there is no clear rules for that. The military does this on purpose, "ambiguous strategy." Mission control will appoint your new CO. IF mission control does not for whatever reason appoint a new CO. Let's say, mission control got taken out...you are on your own, listen to another CO, don't...just don't go AWOL or charge your men into a meat grinder.... That's true for any scenario when mission control is MIA.
Hope that all made sense, I wanted tos hare my heretical knowledge of military matters.

I always had my own head-canon that the Saturnine armor was just an exo suit used in maintaining reactors around Saturn’s space bases. Then at the end of the crusades, with the need of updated armor for space marines, the forces of Saturn reached into existing designs to create their patterns. I view it as the saturnine pattern just being more of a test platform that survives through basic systems of other more advanced suits.

About the only real examples of true losstech are Damascus Steel and Greek Fire, both of which have been well surpassed by crucible steel (we still can't replicate the look but that's about it) and Napalm (we're pretty sure we found the real recipe but until someone explicitly finds it in a Byzantine manuscript we won't know for sure).
Roman concrete as well, Modern concrete deteriorates at a much faster rate than that used in Roman construction.

@@josephwang8589 there are blades in museums that are Damascus steel I've seen them. Sometimes pattern welded blades are incorrectly referred to as Damascus because they have a similar appearance but actual Damascus steel examples exist.

I like to imagine the eggy boyz as the pre-imperium, hazardous work suits with heavy weapons bolted on. Might get some of the monkey resin ones and some Dirty Down rust paint and run them as Relic Terminators in my DA Deathwing.

I love this piece. The early miniature designs are fun. I know that you are only addressing the nomenclature and the in world cannon of the first mini and I wholeheartedly agree with your ending conclusions and thoughts. The early days of the Terminator models were a time of wild experimentation. I especially love the bit of lore you found that could possibly make this pattern of armor cannon. The only bit I disagree with is your statement that it was never called “Terminator” armor but rather just Exo-armor. ( huge nerd warning ) In December of 1988 White Dwarf #108 featured on page 28 a catalogue with this first pattern ( mini #410609 ) on it labeled “Terminator Marine”. So from the beginning this and the other two experimental patterns were always called Terminator Armor and is followed up in WD 109 and 110. I hope this was not over the top. Subscribing as I love the in-depth work you have done. Made me a fan.
Its all good, I always appreciate someone who has the wherewithal to find the actual references, its a fair point I think if I specifically stated it was never Terminator armour that might have been a misspeak on my part, because it very clearly was first showcased as such in the listings you noted. If I remember correctly, Volkite weaponry was originally intended to be the _standard issue_ weapon of the bog-standard Imperial Trooper during the Great Crusade, but the manufactorums simply couldn't produce them fast enough and in enough numbers to arm _trillions_ of soldiers. In the _early_ stages of the Crusade, _everyone_ had a Volkite weapon issued to them; there weren't enough soldiers for supply to be an issue yet. Las-weapons took over fairly quickly because they are _far_ easier to mass produce while still being reasonably effective against _most_ hostile targets.
Curiously, Volkite weapons actually have a Xenos analogue of sorts: Necron Gauss weapons. If you look at what Volkite weapons actually do, you may notice that they are basically primitive precursors to the same technology as Gauss Flayers; they do the same thing, essentially, with similar visuals, except that the Volkite weapons do it more slowly and with less power.

I remember when these were released just after first edition space hulk. They were described as prototype terminators and there was another bulkier multi part model also called prototype terminator armour. I used to have a squad of those.
I've taken to calling the Egg Terminator suits "Dominator-pattern" because of their (no doubt intentional) resemblance to the Dominators from Doctor Who.

I have played about 4 warhammer games in my lifetime. I have never touched the board games or read the books. I knew just the basics about lore of the universe. I normally agree with Luetin but regarding the Saturnine armor, he didn't do a very good job of looking into it.
Saturnine Armor comes from the old Rogue Trader era. It was labeled as ''SP104 Mark 1''
S: Saturnine
P: Pattern
104: Blueprint number (Pretty meaningless other than telling us this the 104th blueprint for this armor)
Mark 1: First iteration (Not to be confused with 104, Mark 1 stands for first produced, not first drawn up)
Which turns into, Saturnine Terminator Armor Mark 1.
And to be fair, the original was also named ''Terminator Marine'' but you had to look at the back of the box to find out the details.
