The fact that both teams had 2 women on them as well kind of gave me that assumption. I work in the industry myself and it is a very prevailing theme...pandering...
@Colors x Shapes…take a chill pill, someone else’s opinion shouldn’t offend you. And it’s not that serious anyways, just something I wouldn’t be surprised about. From a realistic standpoint if you wanted to go that route, having 2 women and 2 men on a squad of 4 isn’t exactly ideal from a militaristic standpoint…I think reach did it better with Kat. I absolutely love your take on Tanaka and Vale's helmets, it is definitely some of these "weirdly satisfying things", and I probably spent way too much time pausing the video and comparing the originals from the redesigns. It's amazing how very different your takes are and yet how easy it is to fully recognize the original material into them, how "true" they remain to the original designs. Great work again, thanks for this!
I love how Locke's visor looks like a pair of shades you'd see super spy characters wearing. It's a nice touch that really shines in the redesign while only hinted at in the original.
The stupid looking curvature that went around bucks helmet ruined the rest of its look, you could honestly just give him his helm from ODST with other attachments. Halo 3 and reach had an honest adaptation of the helmet, shouldn't change what already works. The teams 343 outsourced for the armor certainly didn't understand this.
@@ssjay5870?? That doesn't apply to video game art direction very much... Especially in a franchise like Halo. You can make something new and refreshed while still staying completely faithful to the STYLE established on previous titles.

@@ssjay5870 I don't insult the design because it's not the same. I insult the design because I think it looks terrible. It's called feedback, and it's crucial to game development. Everyone knows it's "just a game". That's so far removed from the issue. Changing visuals is something that happened from Halo CE all the way to Halo Reach with no issues. You know why? Because they stuck to an established design philosophy. One that wasn't boring and was beloved by people who played it. Imagine a new star wars movie comes out, and suddenly all the lightsabers are katanas and the stormtroopers wore pointy hats and Darth Vader didn't wear a helmet. That would be fine with you because we should "let the devs have fun" right? Not only that, but they come out and say "that's how it always was." that's the equivalent, to a T, for what 343i did to Halo design. It's called consistency, and it's vital to the development of any IP. I don't think you know much about this. I'm all about creative liberty, but if you establish creative boundaries in the first 5 games in a series, those boundaries NEED to be respected.
Loveeee these redesigns, especially Vale's Would love to see Blue Team's redesigns (especially Linda), maybe some other Halo 4/5 ones, like Recruit / Scout
@@crimsonraiderxv3422 I know that 3/Reach have a "Scout" helmet, but the overall look and design is completely different, even if the name is the same As for Linda, really? She has Gen 3 armor on the Shadows of Reach cover, but that's a side view, and also basically an entirely different helmet :p
The Scout helmet in Halo 4 was fine. They did change it a bit, but it still looked like the scout helmet from Halo 3. As someone who wore it in all 3 games it's been in (reach doesn't count. It might be called Scout, but it's just a sniper helmet) I can vouch for the design on this one.
Honestly you deserve all the growth youve come across. your content is crisp, smooth, and filled with so much love and care for not only the origins of this franchise, but the newer age of this franchise as well. great stuff.
I love the simplification of the different helmets, and the addition of details which really capture how the characters are supposed to act. But one thing I really didn't like was the way that the protrusions on Vale's helmet were turned into little blocks. I always felt that the protrusions on her helmet were one of the most interesting parts of her armor, with the way that they carried the slope of her chin to a point. But the change seems to have lost the way that the protrusions carry the slope to a point. It's just something which bothered me.
To have more of an insight to what you mean, could you give an example that would make it differentiate from the "classic" look? I do like simplicity, not because I used to play during "the days" since I never did, so I don't have that bias. But I can agree that while I do like the 4 and 5 armors, they can be a bit loud in some places. It's the same reason why halo CEA and 4-5 looks wrong, there are to many things to look at, most of which look unnecessary. like the random hydraulic cylinders in the The Piller of Autumn, and the jagged lines thrown about in the forerunner structures. When I see something, I ask my self "what is its purpose and why is there?" and those things don't make any sense, and so, look gimmicky. The same goes for the armors, it makes it look like they have insect mandibles, why are the things that look sensitive exposed? A plate would solve that. I view things realistically, and people try to be cost efficient so why try to make things complex and hard to manufacture? Streamlined and simplified look realistic to me. The same goes for forerunner design, they were in war, why would they not try to make what they make time and cost efficient?
@@midgetman4206 Yeah, I agree with you there. I think Locke's helmet is the weakest of the redesign helmets, it looks far too simple and basic for my liking. Since removing the complexity of the details of the helmet, kind of removes some of its identity.
I honestly love your redesign vids, they really feel like a genuine effort to honor to the source material combined with the desire of creating something new, basically what Infinite proposes. Hats off to you, W.
I would love to see Blue Team redesigned, ESPECIALLY your take on the 343 Chief design! Edit: (Okay to specify, I mean the Halo 4/5 versions. I’m aware of the Shadows of Reach and Halo: Infinite ones, believe me. I’d just be interested to see how he would go about it within the Reclaimer Era.)
I think the bottom portion of the helmet just throws it off way too much, but then again the design at its core is very non-halo so its hard to reign in. It honestly needs a full blown redesign.
@@gregbagel791 the bottom part (the mouth) and the visor itself is in my opinion actually cool. It’s just everything else plus everything else corellated to that wich makes the helmet ugly. The round ugly head and those big ugly square ears is what I have the problem with, if that was changed then maybe a cool helmet could be made.
I absolutely love all your redesigns, I think Tanakas redesign was my favourite you captured the simplicity of the mjolnir armor and you were spot on in halo 5 everything was overwhelming, overcomplicated and too detailed and you gave everything a more military look , amazing work!
I think my main gripe with Osiris is that their armor is just so ridiculously over the top and dare I say it, too superhero like, blue team's armors looks and feels like actual armor while Osiris's looks more like supersuits than actual armor
8:46 probably my favorite redesign since it's still very recognizable as vale, i understand the appeal of uniform in spartan armor but i feel as though the helmet itself was an interesting and solid design, which is why i think i may like the original design more
Mm I agree, these redesigns seem like give and take tbh. Like Tanaka and Buck's have been given more personality but Vale and Locke seem to have had that personality taken away.
I hated the H5 ODST side flare pieces and how bulbous/round they made them. It just felt too large. I much prefer your angular redesign, and all the other Osiris redesigns to be honest (especially Vale's)!
Yeah Halo 4 and 5s ODST Helmet look too chunky and wide, The Halo 3 Odsts helmets were amazing, That's why preferred the Helljumper Spartan Helmet over the odst
Can we all please admire the fact the he even added the "eyeliner" to all the helmets? Such a small detail with a massive impact. Much love, man! Keep up the great work! 🖤
The Halo infinite banished weapons look to simplistic and Chunky to me, Everytime I Picture the Gameplay reveal I picture the Giant Rectangles with colors around them
These are amazing. To me they look like armor that can fit with the halo 3 art style. If I had to give a critique, I personally felt like the visor change on Locke's helmet was too much. Locke's original vision was more angular, giving him a menacing look and agressive feel. The change was cool but made the emotion of the helmet different in my opinion. I felt it was more relaxed giving it a more normal Spartan helmet look if that makes sense.
Amazing video, I’ve always felt Halo 4/5’s designs are overall busier than they should be for Halo. Here are my thoughts: Vale’s redesign is masterful and my favorite of the 4. Tanaka’s and Buck’s are both great and suit Halo’s true aesthetic very well. You did a great job with not distorting too much of Buck’s since ODST armor is pretty solid regardless. I find Locke’s visor and above to be good changes, but I find the mouth piece and cheek plates looking awkward after the protruding ear vents. His redesign isn’t bad, maybe an adjustment of the ear vents size would help. Overall a great video and it makes me look forward to their redesigns for when they eventually appear in Halo Infinite. (Perhaps in far-future content).
All these designs were awwwsome you actually gave the character some fucking waist armor and toned back the details but kept the designs pure I liked the detail of how you gave Buck the Infinite Assualt Rifle
makes me think of something metriodish, I really liked it as well, but it just feels too out of place in a halo game. In almost any other Sci-fi setting I would absolutely love it (especially like a dark samus take)
The black area you gave Tanaka's helmet almost makes it look like an alien-ish skull with a red glare. Really neat, and really well redeaigned overall. Fantastic work:)
Definitely Locke's, and then Vale's! If you have the time I would definitely like to see a redesign of Kelly and Fred's helmets Linda's was my favorite. Also no apology dude you have a life outside of youtube, and any real fan will understand that and will be patient I came to your channel late but I have not been disappointed by any of your vids since. But I will wait patiently in the corner for your Covenant weapon redesign and combining video, I'd be interested to see if you'd redesign the Beam Rifle or combine H2 and H4 variants. Keep up the great work!
I would have to say that the best redesign is Buck, followed closely by Locke. The boxy cheeks look much better and turn a decent helmet into an outstanding one. And the overhauled Hunter helmet is great. The sharper/simpler mouthpiece makes it much more aggressive, befitting its use by Locke and creating a nice contrast against Chief’s more tanky appearance.
These are always phenomenal dude, every time you talk about the in game design for something I start to wonder how it could really change and improve and every time you just make me smile with your artwork. One thing I think could look cool on Vale's helmet is adding 2 stripes down the forehead of the helmet and getting rid of the swords symbol to help add a little more cover on such a big open area, it would also fit the character because she is naturally faster than the others for some reason, and the helmet also gives me heavy pilot vibes.
Someone needs to hire you. I love the redesigns. The simplification of the details makes the armor look far more robust and makes the helmets look like they can actually function as practical protection instead of just looking cool.
I liked your Locke redesign more than the H5 look, but I also still feel like he doesn't look like a spartan.. Something about the mouth piece looking like Optimus Prime and the head piece being too round, I dunno. Still better than what 343 did, but doesn't feel like a spartan helmet. If anything, Bungie's Mark VB looks more like a helmet for Locke, as Noble-6 was Oni's "Grim Reaper".
The ODST soundtrack for Buck's helmet was a nice touch. Man, I keep forgetting just how _recognisable_ that rain storm sound is. If it's in a HALO vid, and you hear the rain, you know _exactly_ what song it is and what it's about.
With this much talent in redesigning the helmet design, I'm surprised you didn't get hired by 343 Inc. They could really use your talents to port your redesigned helmets for Halo Infinite.
The styles you made were really refreshing and definitely fulfilled the idea of something simple and calming for the eyes. My favourite among these helmets is the helmet of Vale. It went from an interesting helmet with too many unnecessary details, down to something simple, bulky and easy to look at. The top half filled the empty space it had, which was a nice touch. I’d love to see more styles! Great job!
I feel like he should’ve kept that protruding cheek design that Locke initially had. It meshed well with his thinner visor and gave his helmet a more menacing appearance. Not to say that his redesign is bad. I just simply have a different opinion.
@@bestbrainbigman Mm yeah, like, the Tanaka and Vale redesigns worked pretty well (Though with Vale being fairly flexible throughout the campaign the blockiness kind of...takes that away a bit?) and you literally can't go wrong with the ODST helmet... I feel like the Locke redesign missed the mark a bit with the intention of the design, like, he's an ONI agent, they're generally supposed to have some sort of edge or menace to them and the redesign kind of...made it look too friendly? Like I wouldn't say it's bad because yes it's in keeping with Infinite's design language, but it loses a lot of it's personality. The flat mouthpiece does not help with this as it makes it look like something is supposed to be there but isn't.

With each video degrading into "Blocks are good and simple is good so it's the only way" when that isn't like...*always* the case. Certainly I can see the argument for Halo 4 and 5 armours and weapons being simplified but these videos have been simplifying them into the generic.
You knocked it out of the park with these. Tanaka and Vale's helmets in particular look fantastic, and like designs I'd enjoy actually using. Can't wait to see the Blue Team redesign!
I’d like to see a covenant vehicles redesign. I think in 5 the smooth look of the phantom was really cool. However the wraith is way too orange. I’d like to see one design of the wraith for the swords and one for the storm covenant to show their differences in culture.

I agree....I always assumed it was a studio or microsoft "creative decision" that came from a higher up (producer or such who has no business giving creative input but seemingly always has the power to do so) and if I had to guess why....well....diversity. The fact that both teams had 2 women on them as well kind of gave me that assumption.
I work in the industry myself and it is a very prevailing theme...pandering...
Thanks to Rookie dying and Dutch turning into a traitor, Buck felt like he didn't deserve the responsibility of leading others.
That way you include women but don’t make it seemed unrealistic and forced like the new Star Wars movies for example…but honestly I could give a crap less, I wasn’t really a big fan of halo 5 in general.
But it is also tradition that times *must* and always do change, my friend.
@@ssjay5870?? That doesn't apply to video game art direction very much... Especially in a franchise like Halo. You can make something new and refreshed while still staying completely faithful to the STYLE established on previous titles.
@@TBoneHEMA or you could test the waters. Alot of people hate the new halos just not to realize its just a freaking game. So we should lets the devs have fun with what they want to do. Instead we insult them because its not the same. After a while its gonna get boring anyway.

Out of everything you said, only recruit doesn't already have a new redesign or a classic design.

Yeah gotta love to see how he redesigns the chief, damn he's gonna make him look so classic

All he needs is the horns and two eyes instead of a visor and you get a pretty good prime.
Your take on Vale's helmet is awesome 👏
I love the simplification of the different helmets, and the addition of details which really capture how the characters are supposed to act. But one thing I really didn't like was the way that the protrusions on Vale's helmet were turned into little blocks. I always felt that the protrusions on her helmet were one of the most interesting parts of her armor, with the way that they carried the slope of her chin to a point. But the change seems to have lost the way that the protrusions carry the slope to a point. It's just something which bothered me.
I still love those old Fireteam team design
You're making them seem like their armors could fit in a gen 3 mjinor armor.

I think the bottom portion of the helmet just throws it off way too much, but then again the design at its core is very non-halo so its hard to reign in. It honestly needs a full blown redesign.
@@gregbagel791 yes true
@@gregbagel791 the bottom part (the mouth) and the visor itself is in my opinion actually cool. It’s just everything else plus everything else corellated to that wich makes the helmet ugly. I absolutely love all your redesigns, I think Tanakas redesign was my favourite you captured the simplicity of the mjolnir armor and you were spot on in halo 5 everything was overwhelming, overcomplicated and too detailed and you gave everything a more military look , amazing work!
The classic ODST helmet never gets old.
Too bad they killed it in Halo 5
I think my main gripe with Osiris is that their armor is just so ridiculously over the top and dare I say it, too superhero like, blue team's armors looks and feels like actual armor while Osiris's looks more like supersuits than actual armor

I really love your ODST design and I can't wait to see what you will do with the Blue Team! 😄
I love tanaka's redesign
Amazing video, I’ve always felt Halo 4/5’s designs are overall busier than they should be for Halo. Here are my thoughts:
Vale’s redesign is masterful and my favorite of the 4.
I’m weirdly fond of Vale’s original helm. Looks insectoid, reminds me of a bee or something.
makes me think of something metriodish, I really liked it as well, but it just feels too out of place in a halo game. In almost any other Sci-fi setting I would absolutely love it (especially like a dark samus take)
Reminds me of the Halo 5 Elite zealot helmet
That Buck helmet redesign is amazing! Good shit sir!
This video actually made me sad because I know they will never make the copperhead vales helmet as good as he did
The black area you gave Tanaka's helmet almost makes it look like an alien-ish skull with a red glare. Really neat, and really well redeaigned overall.

Keep up the great work!
All of them where great, though if I had to choose I'd go for Buck's new helmet.
A marines redesign would be cool

Thank you!
Your redesigns are awesome and all that I can say is these redesigns would make Halo 5 more interesting in terms of characters. I respect your work.

Great job!
To me, Tanaka, vale and buck redesign look great but Locke looks better and worse to me
the mouth texture looks flat and like something is missing right?
