    I've had this experience when stopped at a red traffic light. When seeing the car next to me move, I thought that my vehicle was moving and jumped on the brakes. I'm sure a lot of people have had similar experiences.

    Why does it have to be against it? Why not be proving the ether.

      The idea of the ether is that it is a medium in a specific reference frame through which light travels, much like any other medium of other types of waves like sound, water ripples etc. Special relativity says that this is not so.
