Buffy was back in Australia in 1974 or '75. I was on the tour with her and she was a joy to work with. Not a diva and always concerned that the crew were being looked after. Great memories, thanks Buffy.
Yes. What's really interesting this that here, at the very peak of her popularity we get to hear her actually talk about her creative process and her profound statements about it. Also her opinions about NOT controlling other people in performing another persons' song. That, once the music gets out, it belongs to everyone's mind. This is important footage because it captures the last bits of her actual innocence. Free from grossly personified ego. In later interviews she's sort of not brag, but sort of lecture the audience about the creative process and the approach to art. It is funny how the world is rolling. I admire Buffy since the very first time I have heard her and after 50 years I can hear some of her works for the first time. And time passes and Buffy gets better and better and shine brighter and brighter...
The sad thing is that she's a good musician. She could have likely had a successful career without misrepresenting herself. Now she'll be remembered for being a fraud instead of as the artist she is.
I was shocked too. (Mescalero Apache Rez here). But don't be so bitter. This was a very profound revelation about the creative process and the approaches to art, pedagoy, and even offering options about copyright.

Think about how she was raised in the 1940's. Just out of the depression era. Not only was it a rough world, it was very much still a MAN's world. I think she naiively thought she'd try using the mystique of a marginalized culture to create a stage presence. That naiitively even comes out here in this profound interview. Even back then in this interview, I dont' think she quite realized that she was slowly losing her soul in the process. Please see my recent film: Buffy Sainte-Marie: The lie that was never told. This American pretended to be Canadian because she thought (correctly I guess) that we would bemore easily fooled because we are more backward. She chose the Piapots of Saskatchewan off a map because it looked like absolutely nowhere -- why didn't she choose an American tribe like the Shawmuts or Wyandots?
This is actually one of the most honest and profound little statements about everything from the creative process, to the pedagogy of music, and even copyright. She's actually ahead of her time on that, saying that you can't stop someone from sinning another persons song. On my own channel (musician here) I got flagged for copyright for literally playing "Heart of Glass" on the banjo. No words, just me playing. And I got it trouble for that. So Buffy was defending ME even back then. Yes, she was a fake as you say. But trust me, in the entertainment industry, and we acting, it's ALL fake. She should just fess up about the lies and talk about how it destroyed her soul. To apololgize for what she did would be for her to bear her evil soul to everyone. Oh, God, if we could only go back to our innocence. That's was she is here in this video. Still innocent and naiive. This vidoe captures the last shreds of her remaining innocence. Come see my movie i made about her on my channel here.
I love this interview. Buffy is so beautiful (inside and out).
She is a fraud; she is no more native American than I am.
Notice she says, "My parents not my adoptive parents" Telling? When did she supposedly find out she was adopted (but it's a lie that she ever was)?
