The Iroquoian languages are a language family of indigenous peoples of North America. They are known for their general lack of labial consonants. The Iroquoian languages are polysynthetic and head-marking.
As of 2020, all surviving Iroquoian languages are severely or critically endangered, with only a few elderly speakers remaining. The two languages with the most speakers, Mohawk in New York and Cherokee, are spoken by less than 10% of the populations of their tribes.
The origin of the word Iroquois comes from the Algonquian-speaking tribes "Iroqu" which means "rattlesnake".
The Iroquoian languages include Mohawk (Kanien’kehá:ka),
Oneida (Onᐱyoteʔa∙ká), Onondaga (Onoñda’gega’), Cayuga (Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’), Seneca (Onödowa’ge:onö), Tuscarora (Skarù∙ręʔ) the languages spoken by the People of the Longhouse or Haudenosaunee, and the nations that comprise the Iroquois Confederacy or League of the Five [Six] Nations.
Huron-Wyandot (Waⁿdát), and a few lesser-known languages (e.g., Laurentian and Susquehannock). These languages form the northern branch of the Iroquoian family.
Cherokee (ᏣᎳᎩ Tsalagi) being the sole member of the southern branch. They were among the first nations encountered by European explorers and voyagers to North America, who left some early records of the languages.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
    Submit your recordings to otipeps24@gmail.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Fun fact: the name for Canada is said to come from an Iroquois word, "Kanata", meaning "village".

Blame anglos for the reduction of speakers of these languages. They always impose their language by force and cruelty to others (like in Philippines, Antilles and Africa) and blame others of that while posing scandalized self righteous virtuous fellows as the charlatans they are. French, Belgians and even Germans, Dutch and Italians aren't too different from them either, these last ones couldn't grasp as much land as England and France so their harm is lesser but still terrible by themselves.

@@ludwigramirez4711 Unfortunately there's a big problem with elders & parents refusing to pass the language down to the children. They speak among each other in Cherokee, but will not do the same with children. These children grow up with no knowledge of their indigenous language. These languages must be taught to the next generation to survive and indigenous peoples aren't doing that.

I first heard the Mohawk language in Assassin's Creed III. The main character is named Rahtonhaké:ton but renamed Connor.

Iroquoian languages were likely spoken over a much larger area of Northern Appalachia prior to European contact, and if the sheer distant between Northern and Southern Iroquoian is anything to go by, then these languages had a lot of time and geographic isolation to diverge from one another.

These languages should be made mandatory for study in all public schools in their respective regions, not just for indigenous students.

Two things can be true at the same time. China has engaged in cultural genocide and so has the US. This doesn't require a lot of effort or brainpower to realize.

I don't see why this is a "one or the other" kind of issue when the survival of both countries' indigenous minority groups is buckling under the weight of colonialism and imperialism from their respective oppressors.

Both. Both are bad. As well as any other nation that's suppressing minority languages or incentivices them going extinct, like France, Russia, Britain, Germany, etc.

@@anawkwardsweetpotato4728 it happens in different ways. In the US it's "we don't care what you are, speak English or die". In China it's due to standardization or attempts to create 56 standard languages for the ethnic groups which endangers non-standard varieties
