I spent 25 years in a bass boat dealership, running tournaments and all the daily “drama”. 42 years lifetime member of bass. With FF verily read the BASS mags and no TV. Utube is much more interesting. Past 34 years I hideout and fish small rivers, don’t see anybody, just talk to the smallmouth. Somedays we have a great conversation and days we verily talk. It’s been 67 years since grandpa was with me when I caught my first bass. Thanks Dave. 🎣

Good luck to Justin Hamner in 2025 ! Two good and contrasting interviews , from the dry humor of Justin Hamner to the in depth and serious side of bass fishing with Rob Newell ! Dave , you bring out the best in everyone and are the best host to bring that out ! I never knew Rob Newell that well before this podcast , just as a on the water commentator on FLW / MLF . He is so analytical about the industry and for someone like myself that has followed the sport for a long time , I admire his honesty and insight on the current state of the sport and history as well as the future of the sport . I’ll have to buy his book .

1:22:36 not a bad listen but I’m sure glad I don’t see life the way Rob does. Feels inherently negative. Change is always going to happen. And it will never be any good if you’re always nostalgic. I promise nothing with be as good ever.

Rob mentioned the religious southern thing imagine being from NY in 1991! Ray Scott called me a Yankee on stage once. As far as the respect thing I think the draw format bred respect. You might have to fish with the guy you just did wrong the next tournament and you might need that angler to do you right. The draw was supposed to be random but known jerks seemed to be paired at a high rate like there were two lists for pairings.

Rob Newell interview was awesome! When I grew up there was a major fishing Etiquette you would learn from your grandfather and it wasn’t broken! I’m talking about non tournament fishing and it carried on into the tournament angling . FFS has dominated the discussion so long that what Rob brought up about the modern angler sharing everything they are doing has not been talked about enough! I hate FFS , but the worst thing in tournament angling is the team aspect that the young anglers have brought from high school and college. I want to watch angler vs angler ! Dog eat Dog competitive fire ! But the groups teaming up now from college and especially the Johnson brothers ruins the nostalgia and competitiveness for the viewer ! FFS makes it worse because now you can see what you are telling your buddy . Banning FFS would be the first step , then no more sharing info ! The sport would recover quickly and so would the tackle industry! It’s ok to have bad boys ! But just individual bad boys !!!

A few weeks back, I saw one of the bad boys throwing a fish across the boat to the live well. The fish bounced off the door and down into the well. This guy has a really big You tube following. Being a bad boy and acting like that are two difference things. People follow that stuff and actually cheer for it. It is disheartening. This is not just limited to the fishing community.

Professional fishing, and alot of fishing in general is boring as hell to watch. It is on the downhill slide. Way too many tournaments and the fisheries are nor well taken care of, especially here in Florida where I live, I was out the other day and the spray boats are out 5 days a week. I have fished tournaments since 1988 including BASS and FLW and it is not fun anymore. I have lost alot of my interest in fishing in general which is a shame. It is a sport I used to love, but not anymore. You need loads of money to play professionely. It is a money pit and you can go bankrupt quickly.
