    I found the tone of this movie quite soothing to be honest. I felt really calm watching it. And Brad Pitt did such a good job. • @berrylewislitseyakalewston3168
      @berrylewislitseyakalewston3168 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @ Carl. This film did not "explore" these themes, it merely mentioned them. Watch the film again if you need to but the dialogue didn't go deep into any of the themes you mentioned. One of its biggest problems.

    Its a sci-fi art film. People who go in with expectations of a interstellar adventure are gonna be let down
    Edit: its not a full art film, more of a character study but 2 scenes in particular stand out that make it new wave-esque.
    1) opening montage when his wife comes in. Directors subverts expectation to rack focus to the wife because as the V.O states, he isnt focused on her/background. Only the foreground/mission
    2) moon fight where sound is used to subvert hollywood norm of high tension music, quick cuts and over the top action. Instead Pitt remains calm and collected and the empty vacuum of space (no sound) adds it own level of tension.

      I liked Ad Astra because it tried to create a normal situation (like finding your long lost isolated father), but it is set in the space world. It shows that no matter what great innovations we make (such as going to other galaxies, the ability to time travel, colonizing planets, etc.) our human problems won't disappear automatically. And this is a story of a man finding his father. It's just set in space.
      Completely different from what Interstellar was trying to do. Interstellar was a movie about saving the damn world and the great possibilities of science.
      I like both, but Interstellar is the type of movie that you have already thought about when you're high.

      Also, Ad Astra wasn't immune to familiar tropes and story beats. Of course, his heart rate's gonna go up when they made contact with his dad. Of course the Martian lady was only going to take him to the rocket, and after that he's on his own. Of course the old Colonel Prius was too unwell to go with him as initially planned. What I got out of it is that, in the pursuit of our careers or “purpose in life”, no matter how successful we are, no matter what achievements you get, no matter what you discover....we are here to live life and love. You can miss moments with your family or significant other if you’re too much of a workaholic or obsessed with something. There’s a million other themes and lessons I took away from this film. So much to dissect. Also the cinematography was incredible.

    • @elintilia2790

      I think this also really depends on the movie theater experience. I watched it the first time in a really full showing and people were making noise all around me, which made it hard to focus and I missed a lot of details that way. The second time, I went to a morning showing on my day off and found myself in an almost empty theater. It was quiet and I had a completely different movie viewing experience because of that. This is when I started loving the movie. Slow-burn movies/shows are meant to be watched in peace and quiet, in my opinion. They rely on a lot of subtle details, so you'll need to be able to pay attention. Full noisy theaters are not ideal for that. Brad Pitt's whole performance was very quiet and subdued; he relied a lot on micro expressions to get things across, which worked wonderfully in my opinion, but you need to be in an environment where you can pick up on that. So honestly, I would give the movie a second chance when it comes out digitally. Pick a time when you're not tired and don't have responsibilities and put it on. If you still don't care for it then, it's simply not for you. But imo I find that a lot of people like slow-burn movies fine when they actually get the time and quiet to enjoy them.

That being said, those other movies I just used as an example, did that for me. Ad Astra did not. There just wan't enough substance and cohesive action/storytelling to invest me. I kind of felt like they didn't do the science-fiction part right. Like the moon sequence was very illogical. Like why ride around in open top exposed golf carts when you can get attacked? Why not in armored vehicles? If the director thought it wouldn't look cool, i would beg to differ. Armored vehicles and drones flying overhead would be awesome and that stuff exists today so it wouldn't be too far out for the setting. It was also inconsistent. Like they went through the trouble of not having gravity on their ships but on the moon base, everyone was walking around like Earth Gravity instead of bouncing around. I've read interviews with the director and it doesn't sound like he cared too much about accuracy where as a director like Christopher Nolan cared a lot more about it. To the pointing of bringing in actual physicists to find out how things like black holes work etc.

      This is exactly how I feel. I think the movie was great, although you cant come in expecting action or some crazy plot. I think Interstellar was a great movie, one of the best movies of all time. However this movie moved me. I am in college for Aerospace Engineering so I of course am a little picky about the science, but it didn't bring me out of the story.
      I have a very theoretical, yet analytical view about movies, and admittedly, life. Obviously practicality is necessary in such a human based film, but this movie takes space to a different level, one that we haven't seen much of. I wonder about space a lot, about our place in the universe, and where we will go in the future. This movie gives me some more of what I was hoping. It evokes a feeling in me that I get with a lot of other movies like interstellar, but this one brings it closer to home.
      It makes me fond of what got me into space to begin with. What is out there? How will humans advance? What is humanities destiny in space and how does it show us the universe?

    I'm such a big movie fan that I avoid watching trailers, & anything else having to do with a film so I can be completely surprised & form my own opinion. I literally knew nothing about Ad Astra except for my friend telling that the film starred Brad Pitt in space & that the films pacing will probably be a slow burn. I was sold at Brad Pitt in space, & slow burn movies never bothered me. So with that being said, I was expecting a beautifully filmed & thought provoking work of art starring one of my favorite actors. I agree with you on this film being visually excellent, but in my opinion that's where this film stops being impressive. I understood every metaphor the instant they were presented, & it had such slow pace that I nodded off a few times. I was completely bored except for a few moments during the film, & all I kept hoping for was that the end would reveal some kind of amazing revelation that would make it all worth it, it didn't. The End was just as boring as the rest of the film, it was not deep or thought provoking, & I felt completely let down.

      STALeader2002 Agree. The thing that really stood out to me was the scene in which he and his father finally meet face to face and how their reactions were so true to how some relationships between father and son actually are. Most people probably wanted there to be a big over-the-top reunion and reconciliation. And there wasn’t which was fantastic to me. So true to how a damaged parent-child relationship works. Not to mention the great understated acting which is so rare in cinema these days. It seems like most actors/actresses want to stand out and have their “Oscar moment.” It takes a mature actor to keep their performance restrained which makes the dramatic moments that much more dramatic. Such a great movie on so many levels. Also the cinematography is gorgeous.

It's especially strange to hear from a movie critic, since the job involves analyzing a film, gathering your thoughts, and then presenting them to your audience, much like a thesis.

      @@tommy3989 Well .. I guess nutrients would run out, but air could be recycled indefinitely. With matter-anti-matter you have effectively infinite energy - you could pull oxygen out of carbon dioxide, maybe even nutrients out of your pee and poop. So ... it's a bit sci-fi, but, basically everything comes down to energy, and that isn't a problem.

    Am I the only person who thinks Ad Astra is pretty much Heart of Darkness (aka Apocalypse Now) in space.
    Enjoyed it and thought it was good but the whole journey into the unknown to find a father figure gone off the reservation with a backdrop of an untrustworthy corporation seemed too familiar and once I saw the parallel I could never unsee it.

    I liked the aspect of how Pitt's Character mastered keeping it together through events that would reduce anyone else to a broken mess. As the film goes on, you find yourself almost looking forward to the moment that he finally cracks. It's a perverse form of entertainment to see just what it takes to make him fall apart. In the end, the happy ending is that he doesn't break so much as bend.

    It's funny you said you really connected with the character... For me it was the opposite. I understood perfectly in an intellectual way what he was going throught, but because of the cold and distant nature of the character himself, I couldn't FEEL it with him. I didn't feel emotionnally invested. That's why, even if I recognised the quality of the movie and of the acting itself, I'm not in a position to say that I LIKED the movie...
    Maybe it's also my own personnal history that made me not care so much... I don't know...

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah you pretty much nailed it...how can we go on a journey with a character that is so Monotone dull and boring, and like you said "distant"...if I'm ever as boring talking to myself as Brad pitts character is then I'll consider there no hope left and hope someone just shoots me in the head and ends it there.

    Any movie that involves “riding the shockwave home” is dead to me

    • @Deus1929
      @Deus1929 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah but in terms of space travel it's not even that far fetched. They were looking at using small nukes detonated behind space ships as a form of propulsion at one point.

    • @PJMontoya
      @PJMontoya 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Deus Yeah...I wonder why they stoped looking at the method...Do you think that a spacecraft would have to be specially designed to ride a nuclear blast or just any ship in space would handle the force to shove a ship 2.4 billion miles before he ran out of food or died of radiation poisoning?

    • @Deus1929
      @Deus1929 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@PJMontoya well yeah. The ship originally had provisions for 4 crew to go there and back. So that's 4 times more than he needs and if her rations that could last a long time. As to radiation, ships are designed to be heavily radiation resistant as in space there is no atmosphere to absorb the vast amounts of radiation put out by the sun. So in conclusion this could be vaguely possible. I'm not saying it is definitely but just that it's not as absurd as it may initially appear.

    • @PJMontoya
      @PJMontoya 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Deus Oh yeah, that’s right. He climbed up the tailpipe, through an unlocked hatch and killed the crew by accident. The crew abandoned their posts during liftoff to try to fight him using lethal weapons that damaged stuff. Smart and realistic, like having a Glock on the ISS and shooting holes in the walls. None of that makes it nuke blast proof. The Enola Gay was damaged from the bomb it dropped on Japan. Spaceships are fragile and thin skinned since they don’t have to support their own weight in space. To ask us to believe it would survive undamaged and ride a blast strong enough to throw it back to earth (even with the ion or whatever engine) is way too much for me.

    • @Deus1929
      @Deus1929 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PJMontoya Im not defending the part where he kills the crew i was just pointing out that he has more than enough food, as for spaceships being fragile... You are so wrong its not even funny. Spaceships (rockets) have to be extremely strong as they must go through the extreme forces of launch and acceleration. Given this acceleration can often exceed several G they actually have to support way more than their own weight. As to a nuclear blast: Most of the damage done in a nuclear explosion is due to the air burst effect of a nuke detonating in atmosphere and since there is no atmosphere in space there is no air burst effect.

    It's actually been a fairly good year for fans of hard sci fi. In addition to Ad Astra, the Swedish language film Aniara and (to a somewhat lesser extent) A24's High Life are great fodder for the human condition in space. A I Rising was a bit schlocky at times, but a pretty cool watch also. The visuals and sound tracks in all of these have made for great big screen viewing.
