  • Air Koryo is perhaps simultaneously very well-known and very misunderstood in the western world. However, the airline has a surprising history which stretches beyond the regular flights to and from Beijing, even reaching as far as Europe's iron curtain!

    Correction: Bulgaria was never an SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic), rather an independent country in the USSR's sphere of influence. Not sure why I decided during my voice-over that it was all part of the Soviet Union but... there ya go. Apologies to any Bulgarians!

    Went on Air Koryo from Beijing to Pyongyang in 2018. I don't know the aircraft type but seemed in good condition for an old aircraft. I did avoid their famous "hamburger" meals, but others said they were OK. I don't think they deserve the bad reputation. Trains were good as well -- not that I remember that much since I spent the journey in the restaurant car drinking NK beer with a British fellow from Rothschilds !! Many roads are dual carriageway but a bumpy ride for long journeys so trains or air travel would be preferable. The DPRK is a most fascinating place, unlike anywhere else I've seen.

    Is it right to prevent a country such as North Korea replacing its old airliners? Old airliners tend to be less safe and have higher emissions. Many other products and services can be embargoed without endangering people's lives and polluting the skies.

    • @DPRKExplained
      @DPRKExplained  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Personally, I agree with you, many of the harsher sanctions are hitting people on a personal level which is wrong on a more moralistic level. The airliners, I'm less concerned about, simply because of the money that's being invested in maintaining the fleet, although certainly modern airliners have more redundancy for safety, which would be objectively better

    • @edricklawrenceong7776
      @edricklawrenceong7776 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Airliners can be easily repurposed as military transports, AWACS, and even be modified into missile and torpedoes platforms, as evidenced by the P-8 Poseidon and Hawker-Siddley Nimrod. It wouldn't be surprising if a country as militant and paranoid as the DPRK would do just that.

    • @etangdescygnes
      @etangdescygnes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@edricklawrenceong7776 Repurposing civil airliners for military roles is a highly complex subject. It is really only possible to discuss the repurposing of a specific airliner type for a specific role, in a specific context. The context is the hazards, risks, and environment in which the aircraft will be expected to perform, the standards the aircraft must meet, and the money available to undertake the necessary modifications. If, for example, one examines the use of a civil airliner to transport soldiers, then one needs to consider the length and nature of runways the aircraft must use, the steepness of take-off and approach and manoeuvres to avoid SAMs, the need for antimissile measures such as flares and jamming, the extremes of temperature, dust, sand, mud, ice, and snow, and the maintenance requirements. How many maintenance hours are required per flying hour, where can maintenance be done, and what tools and spare parts are needed? The aircraft may also be required to meet unusual specs, such as having backward-facing, impact-cushioning seats with military-style seatbelts, and to use a fuel that has better evaporation and viscosity characteristics versus temperature and pressure, than Jet-A. The backward-facing seats, for example, affect the floor structure. Big problems are introduced when you want to modify a civil airliner for parachuting, to carry missiles, torpedoes, bombs and the like. You need to consider the performance and durability of the aircraft at the requisite altitude and airspeed to perform that job, (flight loads imposed during nap-of-the-earth flying differ greatly from those at high altitude), defensive fire, and the aerodynamic and structural loads imposed on the airframe by stores. Aero-elasticity and flutter can be a problem when an aircraft must carry stores for which it has not been designed, and indeed the aircraft's pitching, yawing, and rolling moments versus angular displacement can change greatly. Conversion of a civil airliner for a military role may seem to be an easy and cheap off-the-shelf solution, but isn't! It is almost always better, quicker, and cheaper to design and build a bespoke aircraft for a specific military role, than to battle for years, in vain, to convert a civil aircraft into the right aircraft, and end up with an aircraft that the military air crews do not like and which does not meet the original requirements. Anyone who has studied the Nimrod MRA4 and related Nimrod programmes will know how unbelievably expensive and delayed these projects were, largely due to the difficulty of fitting the required antennae, power sources, electronics, computing power, defensive measures etc. into the airframe. What is more, the Nimrod had an appalling liability: a fuel pipe ran very close to the jet ducts of the inboard engines, and this is believed to have caused the destruction of two such aircraft, with the loss of all aboard. For obvious reasons it is usually much easier to convert a military aircraft for civil uses. In short, I would not be concerned about supplying North Korea with a few good and efficient civil airliners. Apart from anything else, North Korea would then require spare complex and expensive spare parts to keep these aircraft in the air, which is a good thing!

      It’s USA that controls the world and just like with NK the same thing goes for Iran, they need to get new airplanes to! USA decided that NK and Iran is bad but Saudi Arabian is good 🤯. I rest my case! When China gets their new planes flying both Iran and NK will be able to upgrade and Boeing and Airbus loses two possible customers for nothing.

    As questions:
    1. the video graphics colour the entire Korean peninsula as one. Does that reflect a stance regarding the legitimacy of the ROK ?
    2 the video describes Air Koryo international flights. Is information available regarding intra DPRK flights ?
    3. the uniforms and livery for air cabin employees of many airlines are noteworthy. Is information available about the fashion of Air Koryo cabin crew members ?

    • @DPRKExplained
      @DPRKExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi.
      1. No. Both Koreas do not recognise eachother, claiming ownership of the whole peninsula, and so in videos where the division is not the topic under discussion, I tend to use the peninsula as a whole. In this video specifically, Air Koryo, being the flag carrier of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, would design it's maps this way, and so I've followed suit.
      2. Intra-Korean flights vary with very few actually scheduled but with many more routes running. Could be a future topic?
      3. Potentially? Although only anecdotal information.

    When I flew from Pyongyang I was allowed to walk around on the tarmac and take pictures of the planes parked. The flight to Beijing was like any other flight in any other plan, the quality rating for this airline is pure political, I would rather go with them before I fly Ryanair , the only problem was the form they ask you to fill out, the space for your name is about 7 mm long and not really made for names spelled out with western alphabets. 😂

    • @Ben-xe8ps
      @Ben-xe8ps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would agree about the rating for this airline. This airline gets rated badly because it is the airline of North Korea NOT because it is a bad airline.
