Many Yoruba descendants are also in the United States of America especially in the Southern states of the Gulf Coast like Louisiana and Alabama. My family is from there and we traced our Yoruba ancestors being from Benin, Togo and Nigeria. They came up from Mobile which was a major importation port for the enslaved. Many notable Black Americans celebrities/entertainers are also of Yoruba descent. QuestLove of the Roots, Nasir Jones popularly known as the rapper NAS are also descendants.

Point of correction Mr. narrator, they didn't steal what belongs to us or adopted it but it belongs to them as much as it does to us...Here is why:
These Brazillians are descendants of enslaved Yorubas that were stolen from Oyo and Yorubaland in the late 18th & early 19th centuries and when they got to the New world, they refused to abandon their Yoruba religion and traditrion as well as dialect.
They hid the culture under Catholism called Candombrie or Santanerie and practiced their Yoruba culture in secret, until after the end of slave trade and slavery, they came out in open and started worshipping and practicing their faith, just as they would have done here, if there had bot been slavery.
In Cuba and Haiti, this religion is even stronger. Please try ansd educate your viewre and ot act as if this is something abstract from them. They are us and we are them.

point of correction to the voice over. Brazilians did not "adopt' yoruba culture. Go back to history most yoruba were taken as slaves to Brazil. they took their culture with them, preserved it through the ages unadultrated. ours here in Nigeria was stripped away by colonialism. we are the same people not base on adoption. part of them came home to form Brazilian community in Lagos, the reason why our connection is not strong is they speak Portuguese as second language while we speak English

completelly respect your opinion, but we are not promoting tourism with Yoruba culture specially because many of us descend from yoruba people.
I recommend you some researches about "how does a escola de samba works and what's the purpose" and also "Traditional Yoruba Cult in Brazil" and also "afrobrazilian religions", "candomblé" and specially: "What is the connection between Samba, Orisha. "what's the connection between diaspora and favela" "how the escola de samba PREPARES itself during the year"
and you'll probably understand it better.
relax, we are not promoting tourism with yoruba culture in carnival. we are showing our love to esu, egbe, ifa, aje, iyami osoronga, sango, ogun, osala, and many more Orishas and brazilian forces. this our healing. this is our strength and making people publically see it its probably one of the most important things we could do after the colonization, its our scream.
making carnival happens means that the greatest event that people wait all year to come its made by AFROBRAZILIAN PEOPLE.
This has a positive social impact and it's very important for us. Because the SYSTEM (media in general) always aproppriate our culture and tell its theirs. With music, fashion, tv, surgeries and bla blah bla.
in Carnival the ones who want, can see that white people didnt make or started nothing. they stole they trafficked they destroyed us and our lands. my family and yours. my ancestors and yours.
SAMBA, CARNAVAL, ESCOLA DE SAMBA...that is sacred for us. pls, do some researches. it will worth it.

Through the Atlantic slave trade, the majority of Yorubas that were sold into slavery in the beginning are in the USA. Brazil's Salvador has a thriving Yoruba presence. In fact, there are more Yorubas in Brazil than there are in Nigeria today. So much so, The Ooni of Ife declared Quilombola a Yoruba territory.
Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad, Jamaica, Ghana, Serria Leone , Togo & Benin/ ancient Dahomey,, are also countries with descendants of Yorubas. & there are more The culture has survived in many of these places.
