I know 2017 was a bad year for Djoker and lost in AO early on but I have this feeling that if he met Federer in AO that year, Fed would have beaten him as well. He was playing amazingly well in 2017 with that backhand and forehand working like a charm.
Never seen his backhand this crisp, clean and powerful. Looked like a lower trajectory on it aswell all tournament. He's 35 for gods sake how does he keep adapting like this. GOAT
I believe Federer always had this backhand in him. You can see some of the 2006 performances when his backhand was on fire he would regularly be able to pull off shots like this. However over the years his footwork declined, and with the small racquet head he was using his backhand just slowly went away. However now that he changed his racquet, the bigger face is able to compensate better for his declined footwork, Hence his backhand is now back. Of course along with heaps of practice too with new coaches :)

Earlier he used to be aggressive with Novak and Rafa but he was a bit late on striking the ball giving his opponents half a second more to react which is a lot in tennis. This time he took those reacting seconds away from Rafa, which defied Rafa to play his best. Even Rafa agreed to it. Did you see him hit backhands and returns like these before? No. He came forward and anticipated well this time. Earlier he would slice the balls more.

He is taking the ball a bit earlier. I love his cross court BH pummeling the ball. Something he hasn't been doing regularly. Maybe he saw how Stan is bullying opponents by going wide with his BH. Stan also takes the ball early from time to time.
Kiyoshi Fujioka that, among so many other things, is what proves to me that he's the best ever. The ability to adapt at such a relatively old age is unbel18vable.

People speculate that Federer is not as good as he used to be because of his age, but the truth is that he has greatly improved from his former self, (especially the backhand and service selection) that's why he is still a top worldclass tennis player at the age of 35.
If Federer can keep playing like this, I don't think Djoko will have a chance, barring clay courts. Federer's 2017 AO has taken aggressive tennis to another level. Defensing won't work as it is just a matter of time that Federer will hit a winner whether with his forehand or backhand. Kind of like Wawrinka's style, but with better volley, trick shots, etc. Djoko is even more conservative than Nadal, but more aggressive than Murray.

For the past few years with his declining footwork his transition from defense to offense have badly faltered, hence players especially the big hitters have been able to bully him around. But with this new found tennis it will cover that weakness to a good extent, but of course the downfall is that it's high risk tennis and requires very high concentration to pull off regularly.
What impressed me was F's pretty much perfect blend of patience and aggressiveness. In numerous cases he got back to neutral and went back to playing down the middle, or Nadal covered an attack and he just went back to playing down the middle, only to seize the next opportunity, sometimes even on the next ball, to put it away.
Miguel Barahona His confidence and backhand alone won't do that much in winning him his 2nd Roland Garros. He's just too old and doesn't have the speed and endurance he once had back in his heydays. True, dreaming don't cost you anything, only disappointments... But yeah, I still think his best chances are in Wimbledon and US Open (I wasn't expecting much in this year's AO)

I think single handed backhand is going to be the future in 10-15 years. Single handed has more power and manoeuvre than the double handed. The only problem is control. As the game evolves, players will be able to maintain more control with the single handed, even when the bounce is high. Also, most of the upcoming youngsters are above 6 feet, and it's not going to change. I am not certain about this, but more of a prophesy. :)

Huge difference to beat Nadal was to take Nadal's high bounce shots to his backhand a lot earlier, gave him the right angle to hit the shots better with better angle. Good coaching
actually huge difference was organisers giving this cheat an extra day's rest over his opponent after a gruelling 2 weeks of play. As we see in the 5th it made all the difference. #THIEFERER

But one has to win. And after so many times of watching my idol federer getting dominated by nadal at any grandslam. I personally found the most impressive thing about the final with Federer is how he could change the tempo of his game just like that.It was almost as if he was a different player. He was taking the ball insanely early backhand and forehand against Nadal. Wow what authority and precision. Never seen his one hand backhand decimate his opponents with such authority. In the end that proved to be the difference.
Gotta say, putting aside that some of those points were Federers NEO Forehands, that was one magnificent collection and the goose bumps I'm getting right now.
His backhand has improved because he is stepping in and taking it early, almost like a half volley, and staying down through the shot. This neutralizes his opponents' deep shot and takes away their time. Watch how he falls back on the forehand when he's pressured, which is why it can get erratic at times. He's also improved the down-the-line backhand, which is important to change the pattern of the rallies. This gets him some free points. With this said, we'll see how he does at Indian Wells where the sand in the courts slows the ball down quite a bit.
2017 Roger is the glimpse of the Roger in 2006-2007. After 10 years the king rose and ruled the world again, so much for the "weak era" tards, he dominated whole tennis like 10 years before. Remember guys, it was not his era that made him the unstoppable force, it was his game. The game which was capable of defeating even the top player at 38 years of age.... it was the injury that forced him to retire, not his downfall, if he was fit I am sure he could win more slams.... the only one capable of defeating this guy is Novak Djokovic and Nadal on clay.

In the early years Roger played a slice block backhand. It was good back then because he would hit the damn baseline almost every time. This new backhand is interesting because of the topspin he generates when firing it cross court.
Yes Roger is incredibly gifted. He is not only taking the shots earlier but hitting through with his backhand and flatter this time. He is definitely timing his shots better and spraying his shots on both backhand and forehands. It would be interesting to see his new backhand against Djokovic. With his new array ...I think Roland Garros would be much easier.
Federer really puts a lot of spin on his backhand now. Look at the lift through his swing. His change to a larger faced racquet helps him make solid contact while swinging like this.

Huge difference to beat Nadal was to take Nadal's high bounce shots to his backhand a lot earlier, gave him the right angle to hit the shots better with better angle. Good coaching

This always happens in Australian open, one of the player gets an extra day rest, and roger has played other finals too in which his opponent got one more day of rest than him, u simply can't digest his victory, because he played beautifully, right, u butthurt. Agreed. Nadal's biggest weapon against Fed was that high bounce to Fed's weaker backhand. Fed took that away from him. I also note that this match was extremely close and Fed was still very fortunate to come out with a win.

older racket he had help developed his all around game and made Federer what he is today. this new bugger racket help adjust that game into today style. So my opinion is that it was always better that he played each era of tennis with each own equipment.

Right now, there is no weakness in him. HE CAN BEAT ANYONE.-
I think his backhand in this tourney was better than at anytime.

Federer backhand is up there with the best now, was a weakness before, his aggression from both wings coupled with his volley and incredible serve make him look scary good especially at his age. Well deserved two open championships so far in 2017.
What a match. No one has believed but one man has believed that it is possible and that was federer. What a struggle. Nadal has been at his best after so many injuries. Superb comeback of nadal. But one has to win. And after so many times of watching my idol federer getting dominated by nadal at any grandslam. Finally federer finds a way to get his no 18th title..That is the motivation i will always carry in my memory. cheers.. The dark knight rises.. Who knows no #19 ;)

Federer backhand is awesome, Federer playing draft in australian open is so hard 3rd round played against bardyich, 4th round played against nishokeri, semi final played against wawerinka and final against Nadal all player are top ten player in atp ranking and Federer comback after 6 months but all these top ten players are totally disaster in front of Federer. woww. I personally found the most impressive thing about the final with Federer is how he could change the tempo of his game just like that.It was almost as if he was a different player. He was taking the ball insanely early backhand and forehand against Nadal. I know he always stay on the baseline to take the ball early maintain as the aggressor but man that finals match he was on another level. So damn sharp :O

It's about time he fixed it really, his backhand the last 5 or 6 years has been so short, they almost looked like mishits.
Wow what authority and precision. Never seen his one hand backhand decimate his opponents with such authority. In the end that proved to be the difference.
Gotta say, putting aside that some of those points were Federers NEO Forehands, that was one magnificent collection and the goose bumps I'm getting right now.

He gets better, better and better...
His backhand has improved because he is stepping in and taking it early, almost like a half volley, and staying down through the shot. This neutralizes his opponents' deep shot and takes away their time. Watch how he falls back on the forehand when he's pressured, which is why it can get erratic at times. He's also improved the down-the-line backhand, which is important to change the pattern of the rallies. This gets him some free points. With this said, we'll see how he does at Indian Wells where the sand in the courts slows the ball down quite a bit.

2017 Roger is the glimpse of the Roger in 2006-2007. After 10 years the king rose and ruled the world again, so much for the "weak era" tards, he dominated whole tennis like 10 years before.
Remember guys, it was not his era that made him the unstoppable force, it was his game. The game which was capable of defeating even the top player at 38 years of age.... it was the injury that forced him to retire, not his downfall, if he was fit I am sure he could win more slams.... the only one capable of defeating this guy is Novak Djokovic and Nadal on clay.
Who else is watching this before Wimbledon? :) Halfway into the tennis season and 7:16 onwards is still the best five and a half minutes of the year. Backhand winners + THE Point (12:26) - simply the GOAT.
If he'd of had this backhand shot making for the last 5+ years he'd have more than 20 Open titles. Haven't seen this backhand since the early years!
In the early years Roger played a slice block backhand. It was good back then because he would hit the damn baseline almost every time. This new backhand is interesting because of the topspin he generates when firing it cross court.

Yes Roger is incredibly gifted. He is not only taking the shots earlier but hitting through with his backhand and flatter this time. He is definitely timing his shots better and spraying his shots on both backhand and forehands. It would be interesting to see his new backhand against Djokovic. With his new array ...I think Roland Garros would be much easier.
Federer really puts a lot of spin on his backhand now. Look at the lift through his swing. His change to a larger faced racquet helps him make solid contact while swinging like this.
Federer's backhand is more compact now. I think he can dream on more achiviements with this new improved shot.
