I appreciate BB's influence and Albert's swagger... but for this young man, Freddie was THE King!!!!!! Untouchable singer and guitar player in ANY genre.
andy.ronquillo1987 I saw BB, Albert and Freddie in a big auditorium in Denver in 1971. It was a 4-5 hour show with some serious head cutting. I was from Mississippi and hadn't been home for a long time. Hundreds of big legged black ladies, dressed to the 9s, were standing up, shaking it screaming, "BB, Freddie, I hear ya Daddy!" It made me real homesick. In 1972, I was partying with Freddie's band in Boulder motel, and the POleases came and arrested all of us. They let his hand go, but they kept me for 2 weeks, for possession of something you can buy all over town now. Just not suitcases full! Freddie was a kind, humble, giving man. Playing for the convicts was just the way he was. Oh, I was with a couple from Austin that day too.
im not bashing anything here. Huge fan of Freddie and all the legendary blues men but i dont understand ur emphasis on any genre cuz that just is not true.
This is the best example I've ever seen and heard such a good blues groove. And he shot it while visiting a JAIL. Anyone who can make a joint like that ROCK is one of the BEST.
Looks like 1970s Beta b/w video tape system, which had amazing sound capture on its tape. Much of the best 1970s live music footage you see was this stuff. This is truly one of the best videos on TH-cam. As a painter I’ve studied it to capture the different angles of Freddie’s face that I couldn’t get off of photos.
Yes Freddie Thank you for helping the prisoners to have a moment of Enjoyment Great for their Soul My Son gets out Today 6:30 pm So Excited So Worried he has been locked up for 1yr. Thank God it could have been longer I'll have to Show him this Rest in Peace Freddie 🖤💙
thanks so much for recording this !!!! ..saw it years ago..just did again..i had the pleasure of opening up for Freddie in 1974 in Kansas..A very power show and i admit i haven't seen any show as powerful since...R.I.P Freddie King..one of the greats
soooul REAL = Freddie playin' for his peeps in prison ! if you've ever done any kinda time, you gotta appreciate Freddie donating his time to give some good feelings to those doin' time = brings tears of JOY to my eyes to watch this...
what a great piece of history, I love to see the great blues artists with their acoustics! Somehow I can't see anybody these days doing this sort of thing. They're too busy counting their money.
Thanks so much for recording these precious moments. Of all the songs in the world to sing to inmates -- Do ya wanna go? and Let the good times roll. Every time I watch this it brings tears to my eyes. God bless you for recording, God bless Freddie for appearing as hope to these folks.
I was thinking the same thing. Not much good times happening behind bars. But I guess this would help take their minds off things for a minute. But I can't help but think some prisoners may not appreciate the irony. Still, a live Freddie king gig that comes to you - not bad!
What a fantastic, moving and magical piece of film. Great to hear Freddie playing an acoustic. This man had music in his soul, his performance is so intense, I'm hoping but I don't think we will ever see his kind again. Such a tragedy that he died so young.
Phenomenal. Of the three Kings, Freddie is still my favourite. He's mellifluous, such a rich voice, such great guitar. Thanks for shooting this back then, it's very much appreciated here and now.
Wow.. Video is awesome!! I was actually in that old jail in 1979.... seeing that elevator and the cells is kind of surreal!! Freddy was gone by then... man they were some good times
Leon Russell had the good sense to include two acoustic numbers, "Walkin' By Myself" and "Dust My Broom", on Freddie's album "Getting Ready". This is a GREAT video and thanks SO much for creating and posting it! I miss Freddie terribly to this very day.
This is great. i remember seeing him open up for Grand Funk. He was one of the cats my Dad introduced me to on the record player at home. Thanks for posting. Most Jazz cats get too uppity and don't get deep into the blues. This obviously doesn't apply to cats like George Benson and Lou Donaldson, to name few.
Wow, nothing like LITERALLY performing for the guys locked up. You see them behind their window in the door and the bars! And it was a fresh show, no mixing, just good raw music!
Thanks for posting that, that is one of the most awesome performances I have seen. I like how he always says he can't play an acoustic guitar... funny how that even though he supposedly can't play one, as soon as he touches it, blues just oozes out of it.... fantastic!
What a wonderful historical record. I was extremely moved to see the great Freddie King bringing his powerful music to the prison population in such an elegant and humble way. This great human being would be elevated to the spiritual world in less than 2 months after this recording, on 12/28/1976. Thank you very much for this wonderful historical record. Respectful greetings from Brazil.
Bad bad man ol Freddie King 👑, my very favorite king , bb was slick n all Albert was a powerhouse, but Freddie King was the total package....grove, tone, vibe, speed, power, voice, writing and soul
Not ashamed to reveal I'm getting sentimental as I enter my dotage -- I cried joyful and painful tears on this one. thank you Ric -- shared on my Facebook page Donald A Everett
What a great job, this is a real special video. Every time Freddie picked up a guitar, he put his heart and soul into preforming. This really shows the love he has for people and the Blues.
Freddie was the man. A true hard-hitting but humble soul His charisma come shining through when he is. Performing. Total magnanimously. Bringing the stone to a place that. Is not. Very. Stoned. All the time. But this was an excellent show of brotherhood. And. Reminds me that heart is sometimes where I am lacking. And. Is not my best. Self. We should always strive to. Be. More like Freddie. And lift each other up. A little goes a long way. Regardless of the.
... Mindblowing... Freddie the KING... RIP! Thanks for sharing this with us all, Mr. Sternberg. I had only read of this... now to actually have seen it... amazing.
Thank you so much for sharing this Ric. I will use this in my literature classes as a text to analyze dealing with the individual, the state, the value of music on community, and the perils of incarceration.
Nick B We never got anything but gospel concerts in Arkansas. But Johnny Cash donated a lot of money to build the chapel at Cummins and the Varner Unit. He was a "walk the walk" kinda Christian.
What an amazing video! Gives me the chills. This is what the blues are all about. Never heard FK play acoustic. Never heard him sound more funky. You can tell he really liked playing for the female inmates! Cool is the rule. Thanks for filming and posting this, Ric!
Benny (Freddie’s brother, the other guy playing guitar) is in Dothan, Al as we speak filming a movie! Came by and bought his book. Check it out it’s called Survivor: The Benny Turner Story
"I'm not too good with this kind of guitar here" ... and then proceeds to play the living **** out of it, in a cramped jailhouse hallway no less. First class all the way. Like the album said, Freddie King truly was a blues master.
Right on! What talent! Freddy is my favorate of the Kings and probably my favorate of the great Bues men. He was a real guitar slinger and should be looked upon as an example in Rock Roll for any young guy or gal looking to learn how to play the guitar.
I don't know, my Blues lovin' friend, but this is art ! So glad you were there to capture this on film. God bless you, and keep Freddies' memory alive, and well, in the hearts of those who loved him. I got splashed with a drop of Freddies' sweat, after flying through the follow spot, landed right on my cheek. I will NEVER forget it !! Thank you, thank you for this wonderful video !!!!!!!!
Isn't much footage that I've seen of Freddie which didn't bring me joy. No exception here. When I hear of people who actually met Freddie or someone like Big Joe Turner in person, I've got to stand back in awe. Thanks for posting this!
He says "I'm an electric guitar player but I'll try" ... so humble... AWESOME...
His brother and former bass player Benny Turner is exactly the same way. As real and genuine as they come!
I appreciate BB's influence and Albert's swagger... but for this young man, Freddie was THE King!!!!!! Untouchable singer and guitar player in ANY genre.

Everyone in the world should see this. This is joy in the face of life.
Best Ever in YT Eric!!!
So beautifully well put - "This is joy in the face of life."
Everybody's happy! Freddy's got that magic touch!
He sounds so good, it wasn't recorded in a studio, overdubbed or anyything. No selection of takes. Amazing really.
Exactly ❣️
Concrete walls and floors create a natural reverb similar to fired pottery Clay
He says- Not too good on that kinda guitar? My arse! Geeeeez! Beautiful wow...xx
This is one of those great clips we would never see if not for internet . Yes wish longer
This clip is so touching.
Tears in my eyes from the first notes.
Fantastic capture.

Easily the greatest live stuff ever. Thank you Freddie.
You won't see these mainstream artist today do anything like this. this just gave me an idea.
Reeeaaaallllyyyyy gooooooooooooood... A special voice... A very special soul... Mr. Freddie King is one of the best bluesman I ever heard...
soooul REAL = Freddie playin' for his peeps in prison ! if you've ever done any kinda time, you gotta appreciate Freddie donating his time to give some good feelings to those doin' time = brings tears of JOY to my eyes to watch this...
No matter where you are in life, music will always be magical. Let it move you because Freddie you always move me.
So much charisma.
freddie was a beast! electrified or not! love this guyy
What Freddie did is a noble thing.
The first time I see Freddie play acoustic. Somehow, he still amaze me.
Hail to the King Freddie!
Music is an amazing gift from God. Notice the smiles on the faces and how the mood changed when he started playing. Music transcends all barriers.
what a great piece of history, I love to see the great blues artists with their acoustics!

An audience that actually claps in sync and joins in. That's good shit!!!
Good God. That is a brilliant performance and film.
What a fantastic, moving and magical piece of film.
Great to hear Freddie playing an acoustic.
This man had music in his soul, his performance is so intense, I'm hoping but I don't think we will ever see his kind again.
Such a tragedy that he died so young.
He could keep that intensity and feel all day every day. He never just did the motions he always put his heart into it
This is one of the greatest things on the internet.
What a human being is Freddie.....UNBELIEVABLE :))))
Phenomenal. Of the three Kings, Freddie is still my favourite. He's mellifluous, such a rich voice, such great guitar. Thanks for shooting this back then, it's very much appreciated here and now.

Love Freddie, love this clip, thanks.
Freddie was some kinda man, the kind you wanna be friends with, the kind you admire in any situation playing guitar or talking about anything.
