I can tell you his story. He was something back in the '70s. Not a monster guitar player but he recorded a pretty decent prog rock album called "Il buon vecchio charlie". After that he became a radio/tv presenter, promoting rock and metal music throughout the 80s and 90s. He started losing his "technique" and slowly became a trash character. His shows suddenly became absurd with people throwing stuff at him, especially...chickens! He really LOVES guitar and heavy metal. He LIVES for that. Always has. However, something happened: rumors say that he attempted suicide. Nobody knows the reasons...nor if it's true. But since then he's had problems walking and having a normal life. Presumably he lost his money too so he recorded an album to raise something but...again he got sick (presumably heart disease) with no money at all. Maybe he was depressed. I mean..SERIOUSLY DEPRESSED with no one there to help him, just his wife. Plus he got arthritis which made him STOP playing decently. Once again: he never was great but he was REALLY passionate. He is a very unfortunate man. But he has a musical culture that is almost infinite...I'm serious about this. He knows anything about music history. He is just alone, with his wife, fighting his demons and his disease. Respect.
I hope Richard finally found peace. I went thru his past and watched several videos. The man must had been devastated. Today I played Adagio in re not aware of his recent passing. Though I never had heard of him before I watched this video, all the more I feel shocked now. RIP Mr. Benson.
He died a happy man, surrounded by family and friends and the respect that all italians have for him, for his musical culture, his playing and his idiotic moments too, living his bizarre character. He will be truly missed
@@antoniomaffei7887 That's good to know. I made a research and bottom line he was a man of honest opinions, his knowledge of musical background was astounding, so was his determination to continue in what he lived for.

Today 10/05/2022 Richard Benson passed away. In Italy he left us unforgettable moments and it is definitely a serious loss for the Italian metal music. We will miss him.
Richard was an incredibly passionate guitarist. Just remember Stevie, even though you are a fairly competent guitarist, there is always someone who looks at you the same way. I know this is to get views and is supposed to be in fun but just food for thought.
@@SteveBelong72 this video was made like 3 years before he passed. Somebody probably sent him a few videos of him playing bad due to his arthritis, and didn’t know. I understand what you’re saying, though.
@@JakeKoenig You can be part of music industry even as a critic or radio speaker. You don't necessarily have to be a singer or musician. Also, he was the lead guitarist of an Italian prog band named "Buon Vecchio Charlie" who published a more than solid album in the 1970s. Unfortunately, Italian TV turned him into a clown by putting him in stupid shows after he couldn't play anymore.
Richard Benson, in Italy, is a living legend. He has defeated death 13 times, he's immortal, he faced the Dogsitter Christ, he dominated the Dog Woman, he encountered Goblins, Cobolds and Dwarfs with a pure heart, with no fear. Not to mention his knowing about mystic plants, like the Sacred Figue. He masters the dark power of the Hellish Stick, you should not talk about him like he's a common man. Pay your respect to Richard Henry Philip John Benson. You have to be frightened. YOU HAVE TO BE FRIGHTENEEEEEEEED!
Richard Benson is a big thing in Italy. FYI, what most people don't know is that there's a reason why he sucks now. He used to be a great player in the 70s but was later diagnosed with Arthritis. That's when his guitar playing worsened. And since music was the only thing that mattered in his life he tried to kill himself on 2 occasions. It's pretty tragic. Please, don't goof on him too much. He doesn't deserve it. He's just a victim of unfortunate circumstances. He keeps on making music because this is all that he's ever known. I commend that. Please, upvote this comment so that Steve reads it. Oh yeah, and God bless.
I looked up some stuff about him and I went from goofing on him to actually thinking his story is quite tragic indeed. I played guitar for over 20 years, it's part of my life. I'd probably go insane too if my ability to do what I love slowly faded away and that there's nothing you can do about it.
@AntonioKowatsch Thanks for this info. Even before I read your comment, I thought the host of this channel was being a total jerk. Seems like a very insecure individual. It was weird, like watching a juvenile 10 yr old boy laughing at a disabled person. Very ironic that that's more or less what it turned out to be. Thanks for calling out this pretty ugly behavior.
@@JakeGiguere So Steve has time to edit a 12 minute video, write mocking guitar tunes and then publish to 1.1M subs.....but not even 10 mins to do some basic Google research? The fact he 'didn't know' is beside the point. It's fairly obvious this Richard Benson character has issues. No I guess I don't have a sense of humour when it comes to mocking people with physical and/or mental disability. My only point is that some people might think about that. This guy was once a great guitarist. You didn’t show those videos. You also didn’t mention how his playing has become terrible due to chronic arthritis and how he isn’t even able to walk because of it. You didn’t mention his suicide attempts due to the never ending pain he feels from his arthritis. You say you have no friends and were bullied growing up. Don’t become the bullies that tormented you. Do the right thing and create another video explaining WHY he isn’t a great guitarist anymore and you should apologize. This guy was ridiculed on national TV with talk show hosts mocking him until he broke down knowing he couldn’t walk away because of his illness. They tricked him into appearing on their show and made fun of him and he couldn’t even walk away.
Actually in italy he's a kind of an old trash/clown legend, expecially through the underground of rome's people. As far as I know he didin't use to be such a terrible guitarist when he was young, but I know he suffered from mental issues which led him to try suicide also due to his arthrosis(what a bad thing if you play guitar). Maybe you'd like to know some facts about his live shows: usually there are barriers between the crowd and the stage because people (in rome expecially) are used to throw anything like vegetables and stuff to him (there's an epic video about someone throwing a chicken to him while "playing" and there are always verbal fights between him and the crowd. And in the last song he's just saying "dwarfs, dwarfs, dwarfs, dwarfs, dwarfs, dwarfs, dwarfs"..... Sorry for my bad english, everyone know italians are bad to it(also it's 6 in the morning and i'm drunk writing that was hard) hope you find this interesting
Until 2000 Richard was a monster with the guitar ... (search his instructional videos during his younger days and he is really good )... then in 2000 he fell ill with arthritis in both his arms and because of that he tried to commit suicide throwing himself into the Tiber river in Rome, but instead of falling into the water he fell on a concrete pillar, and since then he is crippled and barely able to walk . Things worsen after the incident. The left side of his brain was damaged due to the fall and so he could not coordinate his picking with fretted notes. But despite all odds, he continued playing the guitar cos as he had said he was born to play the guitar and that quote alone should be an inspiration to every guitarist including you Steve...........
And now people literally go to his shows just to throw shit at him. It's really sad when hes trying to play and has to stop to wipe eggs off of his fret board
Ok, real talk. I love your videos dude, but I wish you did some research in him before making this video. His story is pretty sad. He was a pretty good guitarist back in his day, and it all pretty much came to a crashing end when he got crippling arthritis in both of his hands and refuses to give up. The fact people go to his shows solely to mock and throw shit at him is just sad. I honestly feel terrible for him. He has bigger balls than any of us for putting up with the shit people give him
Thrasher987 arthritis makes your hands function differently from what they used to. Richard actually used to be a really solid player. Check out his old videos.

Full true story of Richard, you people need context: He played the guitar in some little known prog rock band. They were not that good, neither ridiculously bad. Later on he got into metal. But he didn't become famous as a musician, he did as a TV host. And this is the part of his life that makes sense: he brought to Rai (the italian more conservative version of the BBC) some decent debate about rock and metal music. In a couple decades, he was hosting pathetic one man talk shows only aired in Rome, in which he insulted musicians and told stories about his (literally) unbelievable life. That's when he became a legend, mostly because of youtube. His concerts in the late 2000s were absurd freak shows, with people throwing stuff at him and insulting him to enjoy his reaction. To the italian metalhead, he's mostly a symbol. He taught us not to take heavy metal, your reputation and life in general too seriously.
I suppose you just cut right out the part he suffered from debilitating arthritis in his hands that led him to get physically unable to play well, so he tried to commit suicide and got crippled when he hit concrete from a bridge, and can barely walk unassisted now eh?
Stevie, Richard Benson in the 70's militated in a band called "Buon Vecchio Charlie" where he released only one album and is very nice. He has participated in several musical broadcasts. In 1999 he published his solo album "Madre Tortura". The latter has good things interesting and others a little less. Unfortunately at that time he was about to have a problem of arthritis and is thought to have attempted suicide (this was said by a close friend of his who was always close to him) causing them serious damage. Richard admitted instead that someone wanted to kill him. From then on he became a freak where he was insulted by his concerts or threw him food. P.S online, he shoots his other material before the accident and they are very nice songs :)
You Know It well for people that had watched him before know that if he knew about him being sick and everything he wouldn’t have done the video. Steve just genuinely sounds like a good guy even offering to take the video down.

I dunno man, this was funny just watching it not knowing anything about Benson, but after reading about the guy... it just doesn't feel right, y'know? I mean the dude has had some serious mental health and physical health problems and yeah, he made the choice to become some sort of public clown in Italy, but still it sorts of feels wrong laughing at him knowing what he's been through. It's obvious he loves music and really really wants to play the guitar and rock out but his body and mind won't let him make something awesome. There's something to be respected in that he just gets up out there and keeps trying even when people are throwing crap at him. That's just my opinion, though. Take it for what it's worth.
Yeah after reading the stories its not as fun. But at least it then generates awarenes of the guy. Some say take the vid down. I say, post in the description, that it was made in ignorance along with the real story of Richard Benson.
We in free western nations try to consider people to be equal. If that is the true goal, then Benson is fair game for satire, comedy, and criticism. Regardless of his situation. He is a public figure, and has put himself out there for the open market over the years. It's "compassionate" people like you who consider Benson to be *un-equal* You may believe you are doing good by trying to 'protect' Benson... but there is a problem: By doing so, you are inadvertently positioning yourself on a hierarchy, HIGHER than Benson, and tacitly decreeing yourself as his protector. You = stronger, more able, higher status, protector. Benson = weaker, below you, needing your protection, victim. Unequal. In the west, we call your types of protest & protection "virtue signalling" - and it has become an annoying meme the last few years. People imagining themselves in society as the protectors who possess superior morality, who are going to 'save' all those lower helpless peoples than them. It's insulting to Benson. The whole virtue signalling industry is insulting to the very people they claim to protect. You're not on a pedestal as Batman, protecting poor weak Benson. You are a mere man equal to him. Nobody is questioning his humanity here. The topic is his playing - at all stages of his life. Healthy or not, wealthy or not. Hell, Jason Becker is entombed by ALS, confined to a wheelchair and can only move his eyes - yet he still composes masterpieces today that reign alongside the talents of any physically "able-bodied" guitarist out there. Music can be interpreted via it's expression and on a scale of meritocracy. Both Benson and Becker are therefore fair game to be either revered or criticised. Go tell Jason Becker you are a compassionate person who will be there to protect him from satire... and he'll tell you thanks but no thanks. (or possibly F. off)
My grandfather's from Italy and that's how I heard about Richard Benson. It's not his fault he sucks ass. Hey Stevie T, I am a huuuge fan of yours and admire your guitar playing (I love shred-guitar too). Your videos make me laugh whole heartedly thanks to your hilarious facial expressions and in-video editing. However, I think this video about Richard Benson is disrespectful in the sense that tonnes of your fans are made to ridicule a fellow music-lover who's crippled by health issues, issues which we the healthy ones have the fortune of not having to experience the hardship. Let's be generous and not ridicule him any further. I initially laughed at him after watching this video, but after deeper research and realizing what actually happened to Benson, I regretted laughing. Perhaps take this video down?
Thumbs, Agreed. Stevie makees me laugh with most videos but this is too much. Richard can barely walk, has had long lasting arthritis progressively in his life and is now having heart complications and surgeries. Fuck this video.
This is an example of a poorly informed youtube video. Richard is affected from arthrosis since the 80s. When he realized that he couldn't play as fast as he can anymore, he tried to kill himself jumpin off a bridge in Rome in 2000 but he survived. Since then he is out of mind and I think we can't judge him musically because of these reasons. During these years he worked as a musical TV conductor and he fastly became an italian trash icon. Richard was one of the most influence italian prog guitarist in the 70s and his technique was so good back then. I like your videos Stevie, you're funny in this one too but it seems that you're pretty not informed about the context where this man come from.
I just heard Buon Vecchio Charlie from 1972. He was pretty bad back then too. His attack was way too aggressive and playing was sloppy. I feel bad for the guy but he was never good

Steve, I watched your video about depression and it was a little more serious. Now that you probably know the real story behind Richard Benson it might be a good idea to make a follow up video maybe apologizing for all those that knock this guy. He was a beast of a player before the arthritis onset. Imagine if your hands all the sudden started to give out and you could no longer sweep pick or one of your fingers lost their mobility. As guitar players losing any function level in our hands would be devastating.
@Wise Guy as someone who was diagnosed with arthritis in his late teens, I know all too well how awful it is. But I also know that the bills have to be paid no matter how bad it hurts, maybe that's your answer. Also, kids aren't anymore gullible now than when you were one, we aren't born with a life's experience...

His life is actually really tragic, back in the 70s he was a good guitar player anf had a love for guitar all his life, but got chronic arthritis leaving him unabled to walk and pain and inflation in his joints (and fingers), leaving him in a constant pain, and all he wants to do is play guitar because that's his passion. The worst thing is that he embraces the fact that he's bad, he knows but for some reason he did a bunch of concerts where people would find the most absurd things to throw at him, they even had netts to stop them from hurting anyone with big items. So to watch this video is kinda painful when you realise that we're mocking a physically and mentally ill person. Just wanted to defend this pore dude, it's OK tho I'm not mad against Steve, just think he should do a nother video that's all
You know? Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys was mentally troubled since 1967 but still the guy was able to make amazing music... By the same era Syd Barrett developed a schizophrenia but that didn't stop him to write the songs from 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', which is one of the best albums ever... What I'm meaning is that illness or disability doesn't necessary stop talented artists to do art (music in this case). What's happening here is that Richard Benson is a ridiculous character, doesn't have any music talent but still the guy keeps trying... It's sad that he's nuts, I know people with mental problems, I have emotional problems myself (anxiety and depression), it's not a pleasant thing, but that doesn't mean that we have to clap anybody just because of mental issues. It's the same on the contrary... Picasso was a son of a bitch but nobody is allowed to say that Picasso isn't one of the most important painters ever because he beated and mistreated women
@@JulioLeonFandinho You are right: he's a shit guitarist with arthritis and "mental" problems; he must have some problems or he would't put that shit on TH-cam.

I've seen people that say Richard used to be better than Steve and chit... Dude wtf ive looked for early videos and even in 2000 he gets trown shit at him because he just plays fast and missing notes and suck in general, and if u can't play guitar anymore as good it's not an excuse to start sucking even more and wacking the guitar and stuff, the only excuse would be if he's trolling and laughing with guitar players in general like a satir but i don't think so
jeroen0011 here’s one but his arthritis was already starting by this vid but shows what he once was kinda. The 9min mark he has a nice little shred as well as the start. Again not his best playing but you can tell what he once was. Or you could listen to his band from the 70s that is decent. Severe arthritis and severe mental illness grabbed ahold of him
Honestly, this video seems terrible to me, I saw it the first time it made me laugh and I made fun of Benson, I saw it the second time and I laughed again, I saw it the third time knowing the "complete" story and I was not amused at all, this man was during 1980 and 1990 he was the best guitarist in Italy, even in his instructional video he is seen showing a song of his called 'adagio in re' which costs him nothing and improvises a very nice solo, (in the same course he He sees how the man knows music theory), but in a recent show he tried to play that song but it turned into hell and he couldn't play it, what happened? Richard had caught osteoarthritis in 2000 and he stopped being able to play well (you don't know how HORRIBLE osteoarthritis is until you have it, it's practically impossible to play the guitar) the guy did what he likes until the end, the arthritis killed his talent, so it's not his fault that he can't play well anymore, in his day he was pretty good. Richard is a guitar hero
I watched Richard Benson's history yesterday and I admit it almost brought me to tears. He was actually very good until he developed arthritis in his hands which took his ability to play guitar. The passion always stayed and he still loved playing, even if it just became noise. The amount of times he's been ridiculed at shows and TV shows by people that just want to get a rise out of him, had stuff thrown at him when he's been playing and struggling to walk on stage because of his condition, it really makes me lose faith in humanity. As of now Benson is hospitalised and I wish him the best. No one should have to endure so much torture for doing something they love, especially if they can't do it anymore.
Most musicians who can't play anymore don't keep posting videos and playing live shows when they sound like trash. Or they slow the hell down and stop trying to shred way beyond their ability. He deserves whatever criticism he gets.
I am happy to discover that a little Benson fanbase is growing even outside of Italy. Anyway, yeah, Richard has never been a great musician (not even in his prime time, i reckon), and eventually decided to become a sort of parody of himself. But it's a good lad, and he has contributed to some nice projects, including a discrete album with the minor prog band "buon vecchio charlie" in the seventies, some notable collaborations in the golden era of italian radio ('per voi giovani', with Renzo Arbore iirc), and even a cameo in Carlo Verdone's pleasant movie about Jimi Hendrix (you'll have to google the title tho, i'm lazy). So ok, let's have fun with mr Benson, but pay respect to his unquiet and unfortunate soul, who was nonetheless capable of doing stuff many of us only dream to accomplish in one lifetime: becoming a legend. Grande Richard!
There's a video on TH-cam telling the true (and really sad) story of this man. He's a very sick man that once was a real guitar player, his illness is tragic and the people makes fun of him. Please, try to know the real Richard Benson. I think Stevie T didn't yet.

His whole career was based on him being abused on stage and yelling into microphones.

If that's Italian metal music, then your country should stop trying to play it. Stick to opera.
@@JakeKoenig You can be part of music industry even as a critic or radio speaker. You don't necessarily have to be a singer or musician.

Anyway, clearly this channel isn't for me so I'll just fuck off now and save someone the trouble of telling me so.

I did know everything already, apart from the brain damage "detail"... makes it all the more awful for poor Richard... :(
Did you leave this exact comment on another vid (besides the ending(

Full true story of Richard, you people need context:
He played the guitar in some little known prog rock band.

(or possibly F. off)

Agree.

If he used to be good, why is he posting videos now? It is free speech to comment about his newer videos, good or bad.
You can't get info of Benson only by TH-cam/wikipedia, you must tell to his italian fans the history
Richard is the shadow of his ambitions and rage toward destiny. U can see in some of his videos some glimpse of sadness, its so sad to watch.

Karma's a bitch dude...and who are you anyway?
@Wise Guy as someone who was diagnosed with arthritis in his late teens, I know all too well how awful it is. But I also know that the bills have to be paid no matter how bad it hurts, maybe that's your answer. Also, kids aren't anymore gullible now than when you were one, we aren't born with a life's experience...
@Wise Guy th-cam.com/video/FXRPPUI9Jbo/w-d-xo.html Have a look at this, not defending the guy's other shenanigans(But he was semi decent at one point). It would mess me up, if illness came and took what little ability I have accumulated in my short guitar journey so far. That is my two cents, my opinion... I wont be replying after this. Have an awesome day or night where ever you may find yourself sir.

IL GIORNO DEL NATALE DEL MALEEEEEH È ARRIVATOOOOOOH!!!!! I cannot believe it actually happened, Stevie talking about Richard Benson!!!!
Just wanted to defend this pore dude, it's OK tho I'm not mad against Steve, just think he should do a nother video that's all
I totally agree with you. Also on a side note I love your profile picture. Brand new is my favorite band

Mental illness is different for everyone. Perhaps he just doesn't feel that way about his playing.

I've seen people that say Richard used to be better than Steve and chit... Dude wtf ive looked for early videos and even in 2000 he gets trown shit at him because he just plays fast and missing notes and suck in general, and if u can't play guitar anymore as good it's not an excuse to start sucking even more and wacking the guitar and stuff, the only excuse would be if he's trolling and laughing with guitar players in general like a satir but i don't think so
He's a shit guitarist making shit videos; his friends should tell him to stop making a fool of himself.
jeroen0011 here’s one but his arthritis was already starting by this vid but shows what he once was kinda.
The 9min mark he has a nice little shred as well as the start.
Again not his best playing but you can tell what he once was.
Or you could listen to his band from the 70s that is decent.
Severe arthritis and severe mental illness grabbed ahold of him
@ stimb, than he should have done more research on the person he's making fun of. This time Stevie deserves all the hate he's getting.
Not only is this video terrible, Stevie T is as a whole. I have to whole heartedly agree that he is a professional cyberbully.

@FR I mean I'm talentless and I don't have social problems or drink
Now, it doesn't matter anymore, yesterday Richard Benson passed away.
No, he wasn't good.
Most musicians who can't play anymore don't keep posting videos and playing live shows when they sound like trash. Or they slow the hell down and stop trying to shred way beyond their ability. He deserves whatever criticism he gets.

I thought he was a comedian but then the "live" performance...
I just realized I’ve been following you for at least 5 years

Honestly, the story of Richard Benson is kinda sad. Yes, he is terrible at guitar and music, however, he was actually famous in Italy, especially on TV for a while. For his live shows, people would literally pay money to throw things at him during his live shows where I believe his wife was there to clean him, as you saw. His whole career was based on him being abused on stage and yelling into microphones.
