    Dunno if you'd entertain a live record, but Portishead live at Roseland is incredible. The live renditions really elevate their music, especially w the addition of a string section. Beth Gibbons also gotta be one of the most badass vocalists

      PJ harvey definitely deserves attention! But I think the best introduction to her work will be the album “To Bring You My Love”. Although each of her albums sounds so different from the last. personally my favorites are "White chalk" and "Stories from the city"

      I think in order to understand PJ Harvey, you must listen to her albums chronologically. She's similar to Radiohead in that regard. It's so satisfying to see her evolution.

    Thank you SO much for reacting to this one! One of my favourite albums of all time. Very happy that you vibed with it too. It sets a very specific mood that only a handful of albums I've heard even approach. For other albums that have a similar kind of claustophobic and oppressive atmosphere I can recommend Swans' The Great Annihilator and The Microphones' Mount Eerie. Both are amazing, btw
    And as for more Portishead, I recommend their self-titled and then Roseland NYC Live. Specifically in this order! The self-titled is like Dummy's angrier and a bit less likeable brother but is still worth your time. And their live album is legendary and is generally considered to improve upon many of s/t's tracks. I wonder if you'll agree

    In a similar vein to Portishead, I would recommend listening to Broadcast. More of a 60's psych vibe but still has that haunting female voice over awesome and complex and often creepy electronics. You are good to start with Tender Buttons, HaHa Sound or Noise Made by People as all are good starting points.

    • @carlcarlson1883
      @carlcarlson1883 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I second this recommendation! Tender Buttons is probably their most straight forward, appealing album, but my pick would be HaHa sound.

    • @MrKrayer
      @MrKrayer หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@carlcarlson1883 agreed on HaHa Sound probably being the best starting point on the band. It was mine back in the day hearing it off of Pandora station seeded with Stereolab. Really love those first 3 equally. The Spell Blanket demos comp that just dropped is spectacular but definately NOT a starting point.

    So cool to see you review this one, takes me back to when this came out. I remember listening to this for the first time, it felt completely insane - I had absolutely no idea where any song was going, the structures are so unpredictable and wild. And the album is just so DARK! It's one of my favorite albums of all time, and I discover something new every time I listen. I hope you get a lot of good listens out of this, it's definitely worth a bunch of repeat listens. Magic Doors is my personal favorite, that sax solo seriously feels like the entire world is ripping apart, it's just a wonderfully chaotic listen. Keep up the great reviews!

    Third is my personal favorite of their albums. Dummy is the iconic one for Portishead for sure but to my ear sounds a bit time capsule-ish to the 90’s with the DJ scratches and some of the synth patches. They dug deep into the well for Third though…lots of old-school analog synths mixed with great live instrumentation…and it sounds timeless and fantastic for their efforts.

    Third was one of those albums that is unique and just sets a mood. Love this album. If you want a challenge, try the band Can - Ege Bayasi, Tago Mango, or Future Days. All very unique in their own ways, and very experimental in their sound, but the beat is kept smooth and at times funky by their excellent drummer Jaki Liebzeit (RIP).

    I always complaint because all reactors only go for their first album but they never get up to Third, which for me is their best because it sounds so dirty and dark. Glad you enjoyed this! Rather than go to their second album, I recommend the "Roseland NYC Live" album that they released around the same time.
    They played with a full string orchestra. It is one of the best concert albums that I know.
    And it has all of the highlights of the second album (better played too), plus some unique takes on some of the better "Dummy" tracks.

    Threads is most likely nspired by the British movie from 1984 Threads. That ending, like the movie is absolutely terrifying. An alarm before the apocalypse. At this I gotta recommend you the s/t (1979) by This Heat, different genres but same unsettling vibes, maybe some influence too; also, since Steve Albini (producer of In Utero and many important Alt rock albums) passed away a week ago you should react to Atomizer by his influential band Big Black. All pretty disturbing and noisy albums
