      Given that the ocean is a completely different shade of blue (more like cobalt rather than sky blue), it should be pretty obvious that it's not just reflecting the sky. Not to mention that whenever you see pictures/footage from divers inside the ocean, it's still blue. If it were a reflection, it'd be a) the same color as the sky and b) only blue when viewed from above the surface.

It's just... grey as it gets deeper because the molecules don't wiggle to reflect the blue either... they just sort of absorb all the light... :o)

    And here in England, the sea looks a dull grey. Maybe it's the silt and clay (which is the most likely option), or perhaps it's to reflect the miserable grey sky that likes to "brighten" each day with rain, rain and even more rain. But hey, at least it gives us brits something to complain about, not that we wouldn't be complaining anyhow. That's the stereotype anyway.

    I had a feeling it was something different than the sky itself because the ocean is still blue under grey skies.

  • @grebulocities8225
    @grebulocities8225 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You know what's also cool? If the oceans were made of heavy water, they'd be pretty much clear. Heavy water is clear but normal water is a very pale blue. Shallow bodies of water would just have the color of whatever's on the bottom or in the water column. Extremely deep water would appear dark gray, by absorbing/scattering light of all visible wavelengths virtually equally, minus the little bit that gets reflected back.
    Why? Molecules absorb light at whatever frequencies make their bonds resonate and vibrate, like masses on a spring. These vibrational modes mostly absorb at infrared wavelengths, but there are weaker secondary harmonic vibrations at higher energies (lower wavelengths) too, causing a bunch of weaker secondary absorption bands at lower wavelengths. For light water, some of these harmonics go out into the visible range, with some weak absorption bands at 660 nm (red) and 740 nm (deep red, almost IR). So a little bit of water is clear, but the red light gets filtered out enough that a few meters of pure water is noticeably blue.
    But when you put in deuterium in place of regular hydrogen, the masses on the H ends of the O-H bonds are double the normal mass. This shifts the absorption spectrum of the bond towards the IR, so that the bands corresponding to the weak red absorption of water get moved out into the near infrared region (800-1000 nm, IIRC), and there's practically no absorbance anywhere in the 390-750 nm visible range.

    You're reading my mind. Went whale watching with visiting family today and wondered this. Had done the same with previous visitors, but the water had been more gray the other times. This time, it was a bright, medium blue.

  • @drakefang8368
    @drakefang8368 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have observed this phenomenon in a swimming pool being filled with water. The pool's floor and walls were all white tiles. At first the water was clear up to 2-3 feet. As it approached the 5 feet mark it suddenly gave off a 'bluer' shade despite the pool having all white tiles. Could it be that the absorption and reflection rate is tied to the volume and/or density of the water? Like the clear glass of water in the video, despite it being able to absorb some blue light, it clearly isn't color blue.

    • @Clone42
      @Clone42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If the font of an academic book is Comic Sans, most will be immediately put off about its content. You haven't read a word, but it's already dubious. The medium is the message. Obviously, whoever put the book together doesn't know what the font intrinsically communicates. Doesn't know that Comic Sans is terrible for long reading sessions. The publisher has not bothered to open classics in the genre to compare the formatting. It automatically makes you question the content. One wonders if the publisher paid as little mind to fact-checking the content as they did to the layout. Presentation matters. It's like hating a song because the instruments are out of tune - who could argue with that?
      I lived in a co-op building before. We had to volunteer. A lot of it was gardening - trimming hedges and such things. I complained to a chill guy that it all felt pointless. "We're doing all this work, these damn plants will just grow back, and all this is about is aesthetics."
      "Aren't aesthetics really important? " He asked. "This place needs to look like somewhere people want to live."
      I felt dumb. Of course they matter. People don't go to Paris for the people.
      To clarify, I'm not complaining about the looks of the presenter, which are fine (though a septum piercing is a snot collector), I'm complaining about the delivery style: The mannerisms, speaking rhythm, and body language.

      Wow someone who watches a video for its content?!?! Thats insane!!

    • @alejandroojeda6604
      @alejandroojeda6604 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clone42 I believe everyone's opinion is valid. Therefore let me tell you. First, I think that the looks of the presenter are of her/his opinion. One can criticize contents and even behavior but not public image, you either like it or not.
      About the mannerisms, I believe this campaign against excessive acting has gone a bit far. We could argue it, but in the end it would probably get to opinion. The flickering you talked about didn't bother me at all. Of course, I've seen better presentations but it seems an exaggeration that you couldn't finish the video. Content is also important, aesthetics aren't everything. You could read a book from nietzsche even though it's clear it could have been written in a lesser complex and more attractive way. The type isn't the content.
      Finally, I think you could give some advice instead of... You know. One could say: I would like better the video if you were more natural. Furthermore, if I were you I wouldn't state my opinion as an absolute truth (you actually did that pretty well, from my point of view).
      Remember this is my opinion. I like the content, it's interesting and nicely explained. The outer layer is your thing.

    • @Clone42
      @Clone42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't address the "looks" of the presenter at all, so I don't know what you're harping on about. I said she could dress in a garbage bag for all I care. Her "looks" are a separate topic from her mannerisms.
      "The content is interesting", that is just an opinion. To someone well versed in the behavior of light spectrum as it travels through mediums it is not interesting. 'Nicely explained' is also your opinion. I find it hard to learn from someone bouncing on a trampoline waving their hands around for no reason.
      There may be 0.01% of people who love the sound of a de-tuned symphony, but symphonies always make sure they're in-tune. Is it an opinion that in-tune symphonies sound better than out of tune symphonies? Can that be a fact, or is it still just opinion? Even though there is mathematics to support the tuning, and why it sounds better when in-tune, it's still an opinion by your criteria, because one person in the audience might like de-tuned spectral music.
      If you really try hard enough everything can be an opinion, and nothing can be objectively true, so conversation is absolutely pointless because it will always end with "we'll agree to disagree.", at best. I guess we'll all just stop exchanging ideas and live out our lives silently in our "it's my opinion" bubbles.

    I know many US Navy guys who would argue that deep water is green. When you're in a storm, and your ship is deep in a trough, the water on either side of you is green. That's why the common insult to the US Coast Guard is the "Blue Water Navy", since they rarely go out to the deep, green water ocean.

    The lake/water outside my home varies in color. If you look straight down at it I looks like it's true color. It's clear to brown and even green depending on the season. In the winter it's more clear and in the summer it's brown or green due to mud or algae. However if your observing it from an angle it will reflect. The reflections depend on whatever it's reflecting obviously. Sometimes the surface appears to be blue on a sunny calm day. Other times it appears to be brown if it's windy. On some occasions it looks silvery on hazy days. On hot hazy days in august it can appear to be super silvery. Now being under clear water with no particles it can very for some of the same reasons. Ocean water tends to have less of these contaminating particulates and filters out other colors of the light spectrum besides blue.

    To quote the What-if (#141) "Normal light interacts with the atmosphere through Rayleigh scattering. You may have heard of Rayleigh scattering as the answer to "why is the sky blue." This is sort of true, but honestly, a better answer to this question might be "because air is blue." Sure, it appears blue for a bunch of physics reasons, but everything appears the color it is for a bunch of physics reasons."
    So actually it is better to say that both the ocean and the sky are blue, because both water and air may look transparant/colorless, but both are blue.

    Also, I read that heavy water (made with Deuterium I think) doesn't have this dip in it's absorption band. So that would mean that, in theory, if our oceans were made of heavy water, the ocean wouldn't be blue.

    Here's a question: Since the atmosphere isn't only oxygen when the other gases enter your lungs what happens ? Are those gases used?

    • @karmaarachnid8345
      @karmaarachnid8345 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Air is mostly inert gases like nitrogen which we eventually exhale without any reaction taking place even if they do dissolve into our blood through our lungs. Reactive gases in air other than oxygen, like carbon monoxide or ozone are generally poisonous. Of course, we can also inhale chemicals like nicotine or nitrous oxide which react in many different ways when they get inside us.

    so, would that mean the sky is more blue around large bodies of water? do to it refracting the blue light that is reflecting off the ocean?

  • @shez666
    @shez666 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought the green colour as shown in the photo there was mostly a result of yellow light being reflected from the sand combining with the blue of the sea to make it green

  • @marktc34
    @marktc34 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok... so.. here's a question. I grew up on the ocean... I would barely call it blue.. like.. nearly black.. now.. there seems to be a correlation between how far north or south you are from the equator vs the colour of the ocean. Tropical waters are almost always a lighter blue.. like.. you can almost tell the temperature of the water by its colour.. why is that?

    The ocean is blue because water absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. Like a filter, this leaves behind colors in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see. The ocean may also take on green, red, or other hues as light bounces off of floating sediments and particles in the water

  • @pesti_ja1
    @pesti_ja1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you look at the ocean near land it'll reflect the colour of that land - brown dry fields, green trees or even deep ocean looks grey under grey clouds.
    Not saying you're wrong, I'm sure you're right but the colours dominated by what it reflects if there is something to reflect...and there's always something.

    The way I understand it, the color an object looks is the color it reflects, so I don't know why all that talk about red light being absorbed while blue light wasn't was necessary. Water is blue if it reflects blue light. Glass doesn't absorb blue light either, but it isn't blue...
