    I do enjoy your reviews. You keep me interested in gear even though I don't camp now. I did how ever set up my tent on my deck. It's been over 30 years since I've had it out of the bag. It's a classic, early winter gore Tex starship three person back pack tent. Don't lol make these anymore. Knowing what I know now I never would buy a tent like this. It is so sturdy without guide lines BUT it's so difficult to set up or take down. Full sleeves are so tight.

    Really good comparison. I've got the Lanshan 2 Pro and was really wanting the Durston, but I pitched the Lanshan 2 for a video recently and it reminded me of what a good tent it is. Then the import charges on the Durston make it a lot more expensive...

    Great review as usual, I just bought the x mid, went back and forth on the two tents but one came up on ebay yesterday so I couldn't resist... Also bought the BA rapide Sl off the back of your review and..... It is amazing. I went from a helium 3.8 so its light years ahead.. As you said quiet as well... Great comparison Tom. I've got the X Mid 2 (not the solid) which is my light summer tent, however one thing I have found is the inner at the top ends up wet due to how close it is to the outer. I guyed the peaks to help pull it a bit higher but think I'll have to try the two attachment points on each side to further pull them apart.

      I would agree that the Xmid is pressing the limit on what I can afford, even here in the US. I don’t need any extras or attachments, and I can more than likely get by with the Xmid 1. I owned the Lanshan 2Pro but unfortunately it got stolen out the back of my truck. Assessing various treks in the high Sierra, mainly along the JMT with my Lanshan, rainy nights and camping near lakes were problematic with condensation, most of my gear ended up getting pretty soaked. The double wall is very desirable. Even fellow hikers who had the ZPacks Duplex, had some condensation issues, but condensate is not as bad with Dyneema fabric as water rolls off. The Xmid 2 sells for $300 US, the Xmid 1 is going for $240, both free shipping, average US customer will pay about 6% sales tax. But I would agree, the X Mid 1 price is about where I’m comfortable at. It would be hard to justify paying much more.

    One thing worth noting is that, in ny understanding, the Lanshan 2 (not the pro version) IS a double walled tent.

    Interesting review, thanks! I like the double walled tent between the two choices. I'm wondering if a tarp overhead would work well and provide more protection from the elements and improve the performance of the smaller tent? When we were children, my mom used to take us camping. We didnt have a lot of money at that time, so no expensive gear, yet a lot of good food and fun. Sometimes it's best to go out in nature and not let funds steal one's joy on earth. 😊

    I love the lanshan 2 Pro, it's my go to summer tent, I always go out with my border collie and there is plenty of room for us both. Personally, I wouldn't use it in winter, as I use the abisko lite 2 for winter camps. Can't comment on the x mid as never used it but it looks really good.
    If I had to make a choice, I would go with the lanshan purely on a cost basis. Good comparative video. Maybe you could compare the lite 2 with the nallo 2, I would be interested in your thoughts on that.

    Good presentation Tom. I'll find out the prices in USA if I can. Lanshan $252 USD new, Amazon , etc. sellers $182 and up. Durston X MidPro 2 $679 to 689 USD in stock dealer direct. I tend to agree. The double wall and the extra space of the Durston pretty much clenches it for me. In heavy weather I have my Hellebergs. This would do good motorcycling for most of my use. Good backyard-type comparisons demonstrated. Hard to pick a winner between he two. In all candor...I'd relate both are somewhat lacking, disadvantaged, relatively poor tent selections regarding 3+seson, two-person, going mild to wild. Bluntness aside... It's about mindset, practice, expectation, and application in realistic, moderate and not extreme-type conditions ventures. If I had to select one of these and carefully considering how, where, why, cost, availability, etc... Lanshan 2 Pro would be my choice. A.) Price and availability B.) in a close to failure or full-on failure situation... having simplicity, symmetry, and single wall modifications receives meaningful nod. C.) Much easier personalized/customizing mods.

    The "guylines" on the lanshan walls are not anchor points at all. They are there solely to provide more internal space. There are a few videos on youtube showing the tent failing/ripping at these "pull out" points, because the user pulled them tight as if they were anchors.

    • @TOMHEANEY100

    Great comparison Tom. It is a difficult one. I don't have the Lanshan Two, but do have the Lanshan One (non pro version). Based on that, I agree and think that the X-Mid is the better tent, but does that scale accordingly with the price we here in the UK have to pay? 🤷
    I wonder what your thoughts would be if you compared the standard version of the Lanshan 2 to the X-Mid 2. As it's double walled and so gets around some of the condensation issues, would it make a closer comparison?

      I ordered a Lanshan 2 Pro and paid for the seam sealing service. Do not do this. They did a terrible job and it is not properly seam sealed at all. The silicone they used is strange, looks almost like bathroom silicone to me as opposed to the silicone you get when you use proper seam seal for sil nylon.
      I would strongly recommend that you seam seal it yourself.

    • @mikelovesbacon
      @mikelovesbacon 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not better. Silnylon sags and absorbs water. Polyester doesn't. So after it's rained you need to tighten up your Lanshan and it will be quite a bit heavier to pack away.

    I am still trying to decide between the X-Mid1 and the Lanshan2P. I used the Lanshan for two seasons straight in the High Sierra and it worked OK. Biggest complaints was the sagging from the sil-nylon and condensation on rainy/humid nights. It was an issue, but it was manageable, and in my opinion, not too terrible. Last summer I had some issues with altitude sickness and long story short I lost my Lanshan, it apparently got left behind, I went back for a long, fruitless search, but to no avail. So now I’m in the market for another tent I am leaning towards the Durston, but the Lanshan 2 Pro was a lot of tent for the money. I do wish 3F UL would make the switch to sil-poly, like Henry from TarpTents did.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey great to hear of your experience... Personally I am not convinced on the market trend of Sil Poly.... Your are right about the sagging of nylon but I feel this stretch allows the fabric to absorb force and is less likely to fail.. Its is accepted that silicone coatings make the fabric stronger so if its coated on both sides that can only be a good thing IMO regarding fabric strength. ... Just manage the cons like the sagging and seam sealing... BUT I am afraid I do like the double wall in the Durston and the offset design and slightly more premium feel.. So not sure where that leaves us ha ha... I hope that this helps and all the very best wishes.. Tom

      @@TOMHEANEY100 thanks Tom. I went ahead and pulled the trigger this morning on the Lanshan 1 Pro. I saw it on Ali 30%off (more like 15% off, as they are always below “regular” price) it was $140 out the door shipping everything included. As I discussed with my wife, I only go out 2 to 3 weeks a year. Usually just one long trip may be a long trip and one short trip at the most. I just don’t use it enough to justify paying nearly double that for the Durston. Now in a few years when I retire and I start doing more and longer trips, then I might upgrade my game a bit.

      Just a recap of my recent two week JMT hike with the Lanshan 1 Pro. The tent worked flawlessly, making seam seal, using clear silicone and mineral spirits (aka paint thinner) worked very well, no leaks with multiple nights of rain. I very much missed the extra room of the Lanshan 2 Pro, I forget I’m a bigger guy, 6’ 220lbs, so I’m leaning towards getting the 2 Pro with the T Doors. 3-F UL Gear makes a compelling case about why sil-nylon is the better fabric over the long run, why it uses it instead of sil poly even though sil poly is a cheaper and easier fabric to construct with. According to 3F UL on their site:
      “Nylon and Polyester
      Nylon fabric is one of the most common fabrics used in outdoor products, it is very hard-wearing and has a good resistance to tearing. It was used to make parachutes in World War II, which shows that it is very strong and lightweight.
      Polyester is a cheap material compared to nylon and we also make some polyester tents, mainly for car camping users who are more sensitive to price than to material performance.
      Strength
      Nylon is much stronger than polyester. In addition to the strength of the material itself, this comes from the fact that it has a certain amount of elasticity. When nylon is impacted or stretched, the fibres elongate, creating a cushion that keeps the material from breaking, as you might imagine if you couldn’t break a sponge with your fist. But this elasticity can also cause some problems, it can make non-freestanding tents more difficult to pitch and more difficult to produce.
      Polyester is a cheap material compared to nylon and we also make some polyester tents, mainly for car camping users who are more sensitive to price than to material performance.
      The strength of nylon fabrics can vary greatly from one post-treatment to another. If treated with PU, called PU Nylon, the strength of that nylon will be greatly reduced as the water resistance increases, which is why most manufacturers do not apply a thick PU layer, the thicker the PU layer the more fragile the strength will be and the thinner the PU layer the lower the life expectancy. As you can see, it’s a compromise either way.
      The thicker the silicone, the more water and tear resistant it will be, but it will become more slippery and difficult to work with on a normal sewing machine, which means higher costs. Also, nylon that has been treated with double-sided silicone, or SilNylon, cannot be factory taped as PU Nylon tents.”

    I’ve had a lanshan 2 and really couldn’t get on with it. For me the quality of the tent just seemed meh, and felt cheap. Yet to try my xmid out yet, bought it due to the good reviews so fingers crossed it works for me.

    There is another factor for the ‘average consumer’ to consider, and that’s lead time from order to arrival.
    All tents and shelters bring a compromise in some way or another, and those compromises will be infinitely variable from one user to another. There is of course just one exception… H. A… 😁*

    Durston is of way WAY higher production quality. So it will last longer. Also the Lanshan is made from sil nylon which sags. And for a trekking pole tent the structure is made from the tautnes of the fabric, and so sag will effect the structural integrity.

    • @davidcressey
      @davidcressey ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Fellmandave1 - Idid the skyetrail in the Xmid... its very flappy in the wind and the DCF makes a lot of noise. Additionally, the way the sides slope means that when it is windy the sides bend in really far leaving little foot/head room on the effected end. Conversely, the Lanshan has been bullet proof. Certainly less noisy and inspires more confidence in the wind.
      Finally, the DCF is not as strong as is advertised. You have to be really careful there are no rubbing points anywhere. My tent actually ripped at the base. I got no support from Dan Durston on this either so honestly, when you consider the cost of the tent overall i would not recommend it to anyone.

    Couldn't disagree with you more regarding the performance in the weather. I've got multiple versions of both tents (Lanshan 2 and 2 Pro and the X-Mid 2 and 2 Pro).
    From my use, the wind shedding is far better with the X-Mid. Also, the X-Mid does not sag when in heavy rain conditions - the sil-nylon stretches and sags quite a bit.
    Only place the Lanshan wins really is value.

      @@TOMHEANEY100I recently sold my Lamshan 2 Pro as having both the X-Mid 1 and 2; and after many uses, found the Durston tents vastly superior in weather resistance. I have all the extra guylines attached and use 16 custom tent pegs which creates a bomber tent in my opinion.
      I have double pole adapted custom Lightwave Sigma's and Double cross poled TN Southern Cross's tents if weather looks extremely challenging but more often than not X-Mid just deals with it. I do recall a couple of nights in the Lanshan 2 that really challenged the tent which kind of left me feeling quite unconfident hence sale. Great analysis of tents Tom... Love your video's and as an obsessive 15+ tent owner. I have 5 or 6 teepee style tents by Luxe, Golite, Mld etc and find these can be splendid at weather resistance too ... All the best..
