  • German Dynasties - The Hohenzollern - No other dynasty is more closely linked to the fate of Germany than the Hohenzollerns. Princes, kings and emperors emerged from this family. One hundred years ago, in November 1918, their reign came to an end. How do the descendants deal with the legacy of their forefathers? What paths have they taken? The family itself provides the answers. In the film, Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia and Karl Friedrich Prince of Hohenzollern provide an exclusive personal insight into the family.
German Dynasties - The Hohenzollern (2012)
    Genre: Documentary, History
    Country: Germany
    Language: English
Release date: April 23, 2012 (Germany)
    Storyline:
The film team accompanied the family for a year - including to the big family reunion to mark the 950th anniversary of the house. Centuries ago, the dynasty split into two lines that still exist today: The Swabian princely house and the Prussian royal dynasty, which provided the German monarchs until 1918.
    Role models and legacy
Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia finds it difficult to think of historical role models from his family - such as Kaiser Wilhelm II. Only his grandfather, Prince Louis Ferdinand, was a role model for the young Prussian leader. After the early death of his father, the grandfather took care of his grandson and appointed him as his successor as head of the House of Hohenzollern. His sons had disqualified themselves through improper marriages. To this day, the legacy of the ancestors is still being disputed. It is about office, honor and the last cultural asset still owned by the family - Hohenzollern Castle in Swabia.
    Princely kinship
The Prince of Prussia finds support from his princely relatives in the Swabian town of Sigmaringen. Although there have been no dynastic relationships between the two lines since the 15th century, they have always appeared together as a family. The former rulers of the Principality of Sigmaringen still have a large fortune today. For centuries, it has been customary to make the first-born son the sole heir in order to keep the estate of castles, forestry and industry in family hands.
Dramatic past and noble families today
The documentary presents the heads of both lines in public and private moments. The portraits of Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia and Karl Friedrich Prince of Hohenzollern are juxtaposed with the eventful, often dramatic past of the dynasty - in opulent images of original locations, rare archive treasures and exclusive film material from family property that shows the noble families in private. In addition to the two heads of the family, Princess Sophie of Prussia, Princess Katharina von Hohenzollern and other family members also provide insights into their lives and family history.

I had the distinct pleasure of knowing the great grandson of the Kaiser. His name was Berengar. He was quite a man, very honorable, loving, and quite the gentleman. His mother was a Countessa. She was a granddaughter of the Kaiser. She was quite an outstanding individual. Unfortunately, both are deceased now.

If one is an American citizen, one
is not allowed to have a foreign title.
I am not sure of the rules if one has dual
citizenship. *I for one, do not think that*
      *dual citizenship should be allowed.*
One can not have equal loyalty to two
countries. (As the British Royal Family
      found out during WW1)

they had ever gone abroad, I suppose that

@@here_we_go_again2571 Queen Victoria of course was from the House of Guelph (Welf) - a very prominent medieval dynasty that actually had its origins in Italy though of Frankish origin. The Welfs moved to Germany specifically to the lake of Constance area and then to Bavaria. Henry the Lion was a prominent Welf - the dynasty established itself in Brunswick and there were several cadet lines including the house of Hanover from which the British royals of that family came. The contacts and intermarriage with English royals actually started in the High Middle Ages where one Welf was actually brought up in England and married a daughter of the English king. Another line married into the Romanov dynasty in Russia and produced a short reigning Czar.

And being Dutch I have nothing against Germany reconnecting with their past. Their royal family wasn’t any worse then any other royal family. Having said that I think the current German republic works rather well. But so many years after the war Germany could be a bit more self confident. They’ve proved themselves. No need to go to extremes like ‘wir schaffen Dass’. I have confidence in the German people, so they should stop acting like an American colony. Stand up for your own interests! It is even a European interest!

Not without checks and balances. And the understanding that to governed rest with the people and it is only through their consent do you sit on the People's Throne. The people can remove you at their will. You can't declare war. You are not above or immune to the law. The legislative body (ies) can overturn your veto. You must obey Supreme Court rulings. And you can't vote once you become Sovereign.

      leaders' plan was to seize
      land in the east before
      Russia fully industrialized.
      That is Germany wanted:
      eastern Poland, Ukraine,
Belarus as well as the 4
      Baltic states (if they
could do it) " *Lebensraum* "
did not begin with the Nazis.
      The battle plans also were
      not updated to include
      alternative choices such
      as NOT going through
      Belgium (neutral) to get
      into France. Britain would
not have been so quick to
      get involved if Germany
      had entered France through
      the southeast.

From what I've read this branch of the Hohenzollern's were from Nuremburg where they were burgmeisters and ended up in Brandenburg and Berlin because they helped the emperor Sigismund of the Luxembourg dynasty -giving him both financial and military aid and he rewarded them with that area which had formerly belonged to other dynasties like the Askanians and Wittelsbachs. So they were rather bourgeois to begin with and ended up as the epitome of monarchic autocracy!

This is only partly correct. The Duke of Prussia (east-prussia as the remnant of the monastic state of the teutonic order) was a vasal of the polish King. The Prince- Elector of Branden burg was a vasal of the Holy Roman Emperor in Vienna. Do your homework better.

Wrong 😂 They were given the land to rule and were never common. They were basically friends/nobles working for a monarch and were given the crown in response to help during war. Meaning, they held sway politically.
